…leaked letters by an archbishop who was transferred after he blew the whistle on what he saw as a web of corruption and cronyism, to a leaked poison pen memo which puts a number of cardinals in a bad light, to new suspicions about its bank, Vatican spokesmen have had their work cut out responding.
And why not get in hysterics over the provision of prophylactics when you have scenarios right out of the Borgia playbook?
Last week, an Italian newspaper that has published some of the leaks ran a bizarre internal Vatican memo that involved one cardinal complaining about another cardinal who spoke about a possible assassination attempt against the pope within 12 months and openly speculated on who the next pope should be.
I’m no theologian but the prohibition on that one is right in the Ten Commandments…as opposed to birth control which was at best is found in the unsourced appendices.
And, then there’s this.
No wonder they need to lash out against the one group that have nothing to do with their self-inflicted wounds — Women.
Of course, on the political side, only intellects of the highest quality have joined the fight against the Obama Administration’s determination to allow people the control their lives in some small degree…only real titans of thought:
Rep. Steve King (R-IA) likened birth control to abortion Friday on MSNBC and said he isn’t convinced contraception helps prevent pregnancies.

Thanks for the Monty Python Clip, it saved me from hurling.
“Rep. Steve King (R-IA) likened birth control to abortion Friday on MSNBC and said he isn’t convinced contraception helps prevent pregnancies.”
Do you suppose he really believes that?
King is just another everyday adherent to the P.T. Barnum school of ideology from the right. He will throw out anything that will bring in the rubes they depend on never to question, never to consider, unable to think anything through.
“Your Holiness, I have come on the most urgent of business. It is said the monsignors are revolting.”
“You said it, they stink on ice.”
Rep. King could have been a Bishop.
OK, I have this figured out;
you see, if god wants you to get pregnant you get pregnant, if god doesn’t want you to get pregnant you don’t, so how could something that is not god prevent something that god wants?
see, this is simple logical deduction he is using
Betcha he doesn’t use birth control either. Disassociation.
I notice that no MSM outlet has yet picked up on KIng’s quote. It’s not even front paged at MSNBC.
I suspect that quote will get buried.
Boxturtle (The phrase “flailing about” comes to mind)
Anything said in defense of the unborn is either forgiven or worshiped.
Boxturtle (Hmm, I may have discovered the tag line for the next Horror movie!)
‘Fraid so. (The post-born are a lazy, shiftless drain on society and moral responsibility requires exposure on an ice floe.)
I think God will smite you for that. If He manages to parse what you said.
Boxturtle (“Logic is a wreath of pretty flowers that smell BAD” – Mr. Spock)
The worst part imo is that saying such a colossaly, ridiculously stupid thing won’t get him blacklisted from further media appearances.
Don’t you see, this adds ‘color’; A.K.A. fiction, attracts more viewers than news.
Good morning, pups. Today we’ve got Brooks, Cohen, Nocera and Bruni. Bobo is playing sociologist again. In “The Materialist Fallacy” he babbles that the weakening of our social fabric can’t be reduced to economics. Mr. Cohen addresses “The Dilemmas of Jewish Power” and says Peter Beinart’s book, “The Crisis of Zionism,” rejects the manipulation of Jewish victimhood in the name of Israel’s domination of the Palestinians. Mr. Nocera is back on the N.C.A.A. again. In “The Hockey Exemption” he says if only the N.C.A.A. would let all college athletes have the benefit of an agent. It seems to work for hockey players. In “The Do-Over Derby” Mr. Bruni says Santorum and his rivals deny authorship of their own histories.
Here they are.
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got a variety of bagels with cream cheese. I’m feeling a bit fuzzy-headed this morning because I was up later than usual watching the Westminster Kennel Club show so I’m off to get more tea. Maybe if I’m a bit more alert I’ll be able to wrap my mind around what an idiot Steve King is, but I doubt it… Have a great day.
Thanks, Marion. So reassuring that Bobo still believes in the holy dinner table, re-establishing his severe dementia, I mean wingnuttery.
I wasn’t aware his wingnuttery was in question. Did he do something sane that I missed?
Boxturtle (The Dilemma of Jewish power: Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely)
Is that what they are calling incoherently grasping for something to be outraged about these days?
He had the day off yesterday.
Austerity applied to journalism, I suspect.
Not so sure Rep. King is saying what you all think he’s saying.
I think he’s just saying the issue needs more study.
Rebuttal?
The thought of studying the effectiveness of contraception sponsored by King is inviting a moral hazard as well as a further threat to the increasing moron content of society.
Austerity applied to rationality maybe….
Good morning all,
Dirty deeds indeed ! Assassination? Who would have thunk ?
He was ruled competent to be a witness in the sex abuse scandal trial the day before his death. Nothing to see here .
but then again he must also be a “very serious person” for why else would both NPR and PBS give him a platform on a weekly basis?
Here’s a rebuttal: Saying what he said is like saying “I’m not sure night time is dark” or ” I’m not certain that war kills people”. It’s stupid on it’s face and condom use been proven safe and effective over and over, showing that the pregnancy rate is 15% for unprotected sex while it’s less than 2% when a condom is used. More study? Almost three hundred years isn’t enough for you?
This is understood in any matter related to the right, in my experience.
That is from George Monbiot in the Guardian: The right’s stupidity spreads, enabled by a too-polite left
It’s great.
If the standard of showing both sides is applied, then Bobo is the other side when rational discourse is featured.
Human tendency is to judge others by ourselves. This does lead to imbalance, as the moral and decent will not naturally see others as simply deficient.
And we know what the record for abstinence is.
Good article. Highly recommended.
An eternal supply for convents and monasteries.
This PT Barnum?
Phineas Taylor Barnum (July 5, 1810 – April 7, 1891) was an American showman, businessman, scam artist and entertainer, remembered for promoting celebrated hoaxes…..
Oh Ruth, you are so unfair. What did Barnum do to deserve your comparison?
Hey, Ruth.
I love your comment. You deserve something chocolatey for that.
True, P.T. had an active mind, I apologize.
I accept. Happen to have some available, duly chomped.
Flowers to you.
Oh, baby, you knooooow what I like.
And he did some good things. Wikipedia on him is fascinating, you prompted me to look him up.
Yes, misdirection. Why, oh why, do FDL bloggers feel the need to misrepresent what Republicans say? Insecurity? Pathology? I don’t know, but it happens a lot.
As usual, when the video is missing, suspicion rears it’s oft rewarded head.
In this case the contraception pill discussed is the morning after type, not regular BC pills.
The embarrassing part of the tape is the insistence by Mr Bashir that drug testing for unemployment checks is the same as providing drugs unwillingly. The quote is accurate, the context isn’t.

Rep King is the poster boy for the need for birth control.
“…isn’t convinced contraception helps prevent pregnancies.”
*headdesk*headdesk*headdesk*
Geez, Steve, get a dictionary and look up ‘contraception.’
They should spend more time discussing their pedophile problems and how they plan to fix that mess!
“People in glass houses should not be throwing stones” especially as hypocritical as this group.
My 25 year old daughter takes “the pill” not for sexual reasons, but because she has problems with her periods and at other times problems with basic cycle.
This discussion needs to stop curtailing rights of women’s freedom. We are going back to an age when women had no right to vote or own land or a business, 19th century issues.
It is time to move on, especially when most of the chatter are coming from men!
Good point–thanks for correcting. But all that really means is that Rep King thinks the morning after pill doesn’t prevent pregnencies. So even if his statement is taken out of context, it is still monumentally stupid.
