It isn’t just contraceptives the Republicans want to take away:
A little-noted provision in the House Republicans’ controversial energy and transportation bill would strip several thousand workers within the rail-industry of their federal minimum-wage and overtime protections, potentially making low-wage jobs pay even less…
And then they can pay hundreds every year for contraceptives or there will be more mouths to feed — because abortion isn’t an option. Or perhaps the Republicans will just make sex among the poor — married or not — illegal?
But Mitt Romney’s taxes could be even lower, so obviously it will all end up being fair and balanced.

About Firedoglake
The GOP is waging open warfare on the poor. Democrats are more sneaky and duplicitous in their warfare. Don’t know which is worse.
Can’t wait for Obama’s budget; we’ve already been told we won’t like it.
It’s the sight of unpoor and not starving workers that makes them crazy. The right wing still thinks you have a Cadillac in your welfare garage.
The San Francisco Chronicle says the House Republican HR7 is “over-the-top combative” and “practically dripping with hostility”. Sounds like a good description of the bill’s authors, too.
The Base takes their description very seriously.
Obama governing from the right has forced Republicans even further to the right. By not holding criminals of the past administration accountable he has legitimized whatever it is the Republicans want to do.
They need to make it all burn to the ground.
In your guts, folks. In your guts.
It’s about the miseries, if they can’t spread them around, life is worthless.
They need to hate, they need to hurt people who aren’t like them.
If you haven’t seen Elliott’s Franken Noodle post, go visit. Pastaferianism spreads!
There is a misconception here, the Republicans don’t really want to take away contraception; in fact they would gladly pay for it or even make it compulsory.
They pretend to be against it to get a certain segment of the 99% vote so that they can do away with taxes, the safety net, and freedom for the 99%.
These people have authoritarian dreams.
Good morning, pups. Prof. Krugman is flying solo today. He addresses “Severe Conservative Syndrome” and says Mitt Romney’s words are a clue to what went wrong for Republicans.
Here he is.
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and the biscuits are out of the oven. It’s 24° here this morning, so I’m off to get the porch kittehs their breakfast and make sure that the bird feeders have enough sunflower seeds and peanuts. Have a great day.
Sounds like an apt description of the teabag party. They are also not surprisingly the worst drivers in the world. Not because they are incapable of doing it but because they feel like theirs is the most important vehicle on the road. Those people will wreck into you just to prove they can. When I see those bumper stickers, I get well away these days.
Thanks, Marion, it’s that demon seed they planted, thinking it would attack the enemy libruls!
Naw, this isn’t hate. This is neglect. They genuinely don’t care what happens to anyone not like them, but they’re not intentionally being cruel. The idea is to get more money into the hands of their moneymen, the fact that non-GOPers get screwed doesn’t even register.
Boxturtle (Hate is currently reserved for Marriage Equality and contraception)
I thought I was just being grumpy when I noticed that. It sure does seem that a tea party sticker is an indicator of a rude driver.
Boxturtle (Do F150′s come with tea party stickers from the factory anymore?)
You missed scenes from the CPAC Palindrone, about how their gods and guns and constitution are being stolen by the (my words) Terrorist in chief. And the crowd goes wild! Maybe fear more than just hate.
I would add to Mr. Krugman’s excellent piece that the Republican Party would by now be defunct, re-organized and renamed if the god damned Democrats had only acted like Democrats beginning in 2008.
Definitely. Every time I see one, I see the hand gestures, doing stupid shit like stopping on the freeway because they think somebody was following too close, etc. I avoid them as much as possible.
The Republicans are just doing openly what Democrats want to do behind closed doors. Obama has been encouraging the Greeks to take the deals – as in cut wages, fire people, etc. Obama and the Democrats have received far too few questions about their support euro-austerity.
Before teabaggage, I got behind some one on the freeway in Dallas throwing cans through the sun roof at the driver in front of him. Immediately got onto the access road.
Ya know, that’s a point. Fear seems to be a major motivator for the tea party and indeed for the rightmost GOPers in general.
FWIW, CPAC is right about the terrorist in chief stealing the constitution.
Boxturtle (Though in fairness, Bush started that thieving)
x2. We must never forget this.
Boxturtle (At least the GOPers are being honest as to what they’d do)
I’ll bet that car these days has the stupid snake and cannonballs sticker on it…
I have a real problem with people accusing others of being guilty of what they themselves do routinely. The only reason what Obama’s doing is pissing CPAC off is because of the D beside his name. If it was an R and everything else remained the same, CPAC would love him and Daily Kos would excoriate him with every post.
My favorite fortune cookie fortune:
Thanks, made my morning. Gotta pick up the roses for Mrs. Pillow on the way home!
I have a hard time figuring out which comes first: the fear or the anger. Chicken or egg.
The fear. These people are abject cowards. Gotta go to work.
Cramer on Morning Joke: MOTU won’t hire because of Obamacare.
Hypocracy, thy name is GOP.
Kos was co-opted by ObamaLLP almost from the minute Obama was elected. It’ll take Markos 5 years to eat all the crow that’s coming to him when his eyes finally open.
Boxturtle (Anymore, he’s as quick to ban a poster as Erik the Red)
Spreading the wealth is just beyond the election! Like the last time. Oh, ooops.
E.J. Dionne stuck Cramer with, well, then maybe single payer is the answer.
Richard Haas says the bond vigilantes will appear in 2013.
And Tom Brokaw is a fucking idiot.
MOTU won’t hire because of lack of demand. And even if they did hire, it would be overseas as their total labor cost would be less. I’m sure Obamacare is a factor in the latter, but it’s really the minimum wage differences that matter most.
Boxturtle (Some people get paid less per day than the minimum wage per hour)
The Yurpeen socializt.
Richard Haas is an asshole.
I had a really bad feeling about Barry’s so-called compromise solution.
And I feel worse about it every day.
This sums up my feelings.
This is completely wrong. Democrats are the fear-mongers of the world…
Global warming, Alar, poverty, famine, genetically modified crops, the President threatening SS recipients, lead paint, inequality, gun control, and everything that threatens the fantasy of a perfect life situation.
The reality of life here is that wages have to decrease, contributions to entitlements will have to increase, and expectations of Govt largesse diminished. Like in Greece. Or else we become Greece. Take your pick.
Thanks for the laugh.
Greece’s problem – amongst others – is that they gave up their own currency, which the US hasn’t. Greece could solve their own problems by getting off the euro instead of becoming a client state of Merkel’s fourth reich.
You’re for lead paint. LOLOL
Jeff Flake. Talk about someone who’s aptly named.
Romney wants to be Zeus and t Greece the wheels of America.
spot on comment.
Obama has destroyed whatever right left balance that was left after GW Bush and our Media agreed to go right as fast as possible.
The difference is the Democrats expose the problems it is rational to fear, as the GOP sells other fears – mostly pretend including fear of the “other”, to hide those problems.
As to entitlements, in the US with a dedicated tax they are not “entitlements” – they are the benefits contracted for. The EU is a good example of the danger of paying from general funds for these types of benefits – at the first sign of a downturn, the money for the military and the rich is protected and the government has only these “entitlements” to cut. Never a discussion of increasing the tax on the rich.
The US rich want the US to convert to a EU system because that protects the rich better (as in dropping world wide taxation of corporate income being pushed in favor of EU’s method of the rich telling the gov how much of their profits were made in that country and is therefore available for taxation – a proposal of Simpson the Obama likes).
I used to “do” taxes – with analysis of various rich so as to find a match to my corporations needs – and I know how much income is hidden. Tax Lawyers in NYC, London, Germany, etc make 4 and 5 million a year for a reason. Guys like myself that wanted to do only the straight and narrow were lucky to have a year in 6 figures.

Make no mistake about it, the
inability to finance space exploration
http://news.yahoo.com/big-nasa-budget-cuts-slash-mars-missions-experts-020004601.html
is due to corruption and the concomitant
inefficiencies in most key sectors.
It’s also due to incarcerating instead of
educating and firing on all cylinders.
It’s also due to an economy knee-capped
in favor of capital formation benchmarked
to an I.V. tap of near free reserves for
TBTF banks, precisely the folks who
delivered the worst societal financial experience
imaginable.
This runs parallel to the effect from the
controlling health insurance cartel:
the uninsured have been on their way into
the county hospitals all along, their care
“cost-shifted” into your premiums.
Arriving late, their prognoses are
dramatically more terrible than should
otherwise be the case.
The cartel member doesn’t care. The
cost is shifted. They’re only responsible
for the risk-free coverage.
So one ends up with an intensely
ineffective, inefficient system utterly
compassion-devoid.
It was the opposite that lifted the U.S.
out of the 1929 depression, forgetting
that the health care sector should be
effective instead of corrupted in the first
place and all along.
Mr. Obama replaced that with not
the “public option” at all.
His plan by law guarantees a very large
profit margin for the carriers and has
the taxpayer subsidize caring for
risky customers through “high risk exchanges.”
That runs parallel, again, to the taxpayer
(not aware generally) paying for banks’
“haircuts” (under different names for the
process–generally, another day, another way.)
That’s entirely in addition to Mr. Bernanke’s
using the earning power of a world’s savings
and benchmarking capital formation in the
U.S. to near-free reserves I.V. tap-fed
the TBTF banks.

Yeah, that Upton Sinclair book was certainly the beginning of the end. We should have never feared having rat feces in our meat back in the day. You’re always spot on with everything.
the republicans are looking for their new flag burning, gays in the military, gays marrying crisses to divert the attention from the real issues like jobs, economy, inequality and the fraud thats going on at wallstreet.I hope more people see through their tactics and hold them to the real issues
