This year Deval Patrick (MA – Patriots) and Andrew Cuomo (NY – Giants) have done the usual thing; a bet of regional foods. If the Patriots win, NY will send 46 (since it’s Superbowl 46) cases of New York-made yogurt, 46 dozen bagels from Manhattan’s Ess-a-Bagel and 46 cheesecakes from Junior’s in Brooklyn to a Massachusetts food bank.
If the Giants win, MA will send 46 pies from The Pie Ladies in Centerville, 46 cases of chips made in Needham Heights and clam chowder from Boston-based Legal Seafoods. All of that is just fine – why turn down an opportunity to showcase regional delicacies? Who doesn’t love cheesecake or pies? But wait, they’re playing in Indiana, so where’s the mention of Hoosier Pie? (mmm, pies…mmm cheesecake…mmm snap out of Homer Simpson mode!)
Then there’s a lot of on-line advice about hosting Superbowl parties and making food for them. Some say to go for the usual – pizza, wings, chili and tailgating type foods like bratwursts and burgers and such. Those are all perfectly fine – they match the event and are pretty darn comfortable. Some say go for the regional theme. Some say go for your local regional food preferences.
Well, howzabout we repurpose any kind of food favorites? Let me give a few examples.
Deviled eggs. People usually make them one specific way, with some ratio of dill pickle relish for instance, maybe some paprika sprinkled on top, maybe not. But how about making them curried? The first time I did that I was sure that only I would like them that way – but nope! They were gone in a flash, just like deviled eggs usually disappear. In fact my sister-out-law Jennifer only likes them that way now.
Reubens. One of the finer sandwiches known to human kind if you ask me. Well, turn the fun parts of it into a dip, and serve with crackers or cut up rye bread. That’s just two “re-purposers” and I’m sure there’s more.
Then there’s disguises. A few years ago Mr. B and I went to a “pizza party” Superbowl party and I was griping “boring – I don’t want to make or buy pizza.” But Mr. B said “Let’s make a calzone and pay attention to making it look like a football.” We did that and it was a hit! There’s more than that “disguise” right?
I guess my point is, there’s those two techniques: re-purpose, disguise and then others that I haven’t even thought of that one can do to any kind of food, drink to make any event, not just this Superbowl, fun and interesting. Considering there’s meats, main dishes, side dishes, salads, dips, appetizers and desserts of all kinds that one can really get creative.
I say let our imaginations as well as our fondnesses for some regular comfort food just step forth in the comments and set a Splendid Table. With all the creativity here at the Lake, with pure imagination with no ingredient constraints, along with what some may need to consider for dietary constrictions, or budgetary constriction too for that matter, I’m completely convinced that we’ll end up with a fabulous spread.
So much that anyone who sees it would want to, well, Pull Up A Chair.

About Firedoglake
Good morning, Kelly. Can I have the food without the football game?
Thanks Kelly, I’ll have 46 curried deviled eggs, and the locally brewed beer. Actually, the TX influence requires that a dish of seven layered dip also appear.
Wow! Kelly, msmolly, and Ruth.
What a kickoff to a Saturday morning conversation!
Why, yes we can!
To tell the truth, we have the Netflix queue fired up for delivery today, and they’ll be sending The Sound of Music. We’ve watched that the last 5 Superbowl Sundays!
7 layer dip – Mmmmm…
Back in a few – I have GOT to get some coffee.
Too late to edit.
I should have added a “good morning everyone” to the first greeting.
mMmm Food!
G;morning Kelly and friends
How about boneless chicken wings? or is that not afar enough change?
we’re looking forward to test tasting a hot sauce that is 1/2 Frank’s and 1/2 Tabasco’s new buffalo wing sauce – supposed to be extra good.
Well, Good Saturday Morning, Kelly and Pups
I’m going to be making a seven layer bean dip and a friend is bringing deviled eggs.
In the past, we’ve watched the superbowl portion of Billy Murray’s Where The Buffalo Roam, but I haven’t seen that in a while, so we’ve pulled that out of the shelves and will watch that. If you haven’t seen it, it’s pretty crazy.
Sounds like a good plan.
I’m going to be watching what Occupy the Superbowl does.
It will be interesting what the police forces (deliberate plural) do to stop any protest from getting a lot of publicity or attention. I am sure they have made contingency plans.
OMG- Don’t look outside if yer in Colorado! Looks like the snow stopped but there’s about 19, 20 inches of the stuff.
Their experience is with NASCAR, correct? Multisyllabic speech alone should totally throw them off.
My kids and grandkids all live in Indy. Put aside all of the negatives, and I agree with many of them, the city is going all-out and a lot of the residents are very proud of what my daughter called “our beautiful city.”
Apparently Monument Circle and Capitol Ave have been a mob scene since yesterday.
Is anyone serving chips and dip?
Good Morning All.
I’m not a Bread and Circus Fan, but love the food. I’ve got some homemade pimento cheese that I am going to slather on cresent roll dough and shove into the oven.
ha ha – the funniest part of that book anyway (I can’t remember if it’s in the movie) is Hunter Thompson takin’ a wizz and talking football with Nixon.
I need dip suggestions
I thought I’d do tortilla chips with my 7 layer bean dip.
Do you eat pork products? If so, that rotel tomato with chillies, sausage, and velvetta cheese dip is AWESOME!
What kind of chips/crackers – and are you dipping veggies too?
It is in the movie and it is funny.
Another funny scene is where Thompson tells the Buffalo, What kind of girls are you gonna get? You’ve got shitty dope. Or something like that.
Nothing beats fresh guacamole, of course, but have you tried getting tortillas and baking them, with a little EVOO for my taste?
I do do pork – I will check that out, thanks
only if I have to ;)
actually yes
You can use tortilla chips and veggies with it.
Kelly! Ya know, I think I’m skipping the superbowl this year, (along with Randall Terry’s despicable displays). I expect that once again I’ll be the only person who has no idea what happened in the big game. Lately that seems to have become my superbowl tradition.
Good morning!
never thought about baking my own.
What?!? No nachos? Communist!
mmmm, communist nachos – each chip according to its cheese
Sorry to inject a bit of politics but this is funny. Why is it that only Republicans are worried about voter fraud? Could it be because they’re largely responsible for all of it?
Guess he shoulda gone out with an FBI agent like Coultergeist.
Or it’s only as strong as it’s weakest chili…
Good morning all. What a rare and true treat to have Kelly at PUAC. Thanks Kelly.
As I mentioned yesterday at the Diner, we are dealing with our baby’s 21st Birthday today and as a result have not even discussed what we will do for the game. Off to catch up on the comments.
Don’t cringe until you’ve tried it department:
Sh*t on Bread
1 lb. hamburger
1 lb. pork sausage
1 lb. Velveeta cheese
1 tsp. garlic salt
1 tsp. oregano
Party Bread
Brown hamburger and sausage, add cheese and spices. Spread on party bread (freeze if you’re making them ahead). Bake at 375º until bubbly.
You can call them something else for polite company (IS there polite company at a Superbowl party?), and the ingredients are pretty plebian, but they sure do disappear off the plate at a party.
how hard is the seven layer dip?
Along with that goes our weasel governor, lying about his intentions WRT right-to-work, and then shoving it through our Republican legislature and sneaking off to sign it in secret.
I think there will be demonstrations at the Super Bowl about THAT, too.
I’ve had a variation of that and it’s GOOD!
Oh yeah. I might tune in for that if they manage to disrupt the game.
I’ll drink to that. And the game. And the snacks. Yes, I always miss how it ends.
You’re not the only, M. “We are better than you and we are gonna whup you in front of everybody to prove it” doesn’t do anything for my tender ego. Maybe someday marketers will discover a way to sell stuff in a more loving community spirit.
Grilled cheese sandwiches, but the cheese MUST be Gruyere and the bread MUST be sourdough. Heaven!
Anti-SB entertainment: probably “All About Eve” and “In & Out.”
About your dip thing – have you ever heard of this Peruvian one called aji (AHhee)? It’s REALLY good and very lite.
Very flexible and forgiving. This approach ain’t bad…
Cheers, Im with you….Occupy Austin evicted last night…in case that’s new news.
As have I but I think the recipe must have died with my mom.
I’m just not altogether awake and firing on all cylinders – so howdy to all that have joined so far.
oo!
and I love sourdough bread -
I could never develop a taste for sourdough. Maybe because you so rarely see it in Cajun cuisine.
Belch still spring cleaning or did that storm break him of it? ;)
I’m having serious server problems. Can’t get the refresher to work properly. I finally got back in, so I’ll just say Hi to Margaret and take off.
Elliott – the 7 layer is easy peasy. If you like to chop onions, grate cheese, smoosh avocados…etc.
(I’ll be back if the refresh works…)
Oh, and Damn You, Canfield! [/Jon Stewart voice] for that lovely pic of deviled eggs .. now my brain is in total *must. have. deviled. egg* mode ..
Sharky – that makes me think of Croque Monsieurs the commy sandwich of France.
Also in D.C., tho no violence.
ROTFLMAO! Yeah, I scrolled past it really fast!
He has snow to shovel now, so he’s all happy
Hi demi! Have a wonderful day.
So is Spuds, just at FDL, can’t get comments at all.
LMAO! Sounds like a wonderful guy as I’ve said many times.
Stay warm….;)
Had the same problem. Switched browsers.
Good morning firedogs, and thanks for the host Kelly.
I just woke up and came downstairs, 7.5 hours after going to bed, to find that the washing machine that my wife turned on before we went upstairs last night was still pouring out water for the rinse cycle.
I’m terrified by the waste of water, and even more terrified to see my next water bill :-[
Had big storms last night, got down to the 40′s. I would like a touch of winter, actually. First time this week I’ve had the heater lit.
Adult grilled cheese chez msmolly:
Sourdough bread, buttered on the outside
Sliced Brie
Fresh basil, cut into strips (chiffonade)
Sliced fresh tomato
Grill in a panini maker or griddle.
Really? Which were you using out of curiosity? Firefox wants me to update my browser but every time I do, a whole list of plug ins stop working.
Yikes! But water bills absorb a lot of waste, maybe if you just limit your use to basics for this remainder of the month?
i’ve been immersed in the news of that for the last hour. it sucks big time that they got one hour’s notice of eviction on a rainy night.
i made a dip yesterday – pumpkin black bean hummus. using lightly blanched veggies.
someone will have to intrude their news of the game into whatever else i’m paying attention to.
You can bet we’ll be limiting for the rest of the month. At least we don’t have to water! Did you get as much rain as we did last night?
Now I gotta get the butt in gear. People coming for dinner, need to clean a bit after the contractor finished tearing my half bath apart, errands, set the table, etc.
Have a great Saturday! I may peek in later.
Actually I think it was here, a long time ago, somebody recommended the gruyere/sourdough thing .. and it was summer, so fresh tomato too (really orgasmic, the flavor combo between the gruyere and nice fresh sweet tomato) .. the bread doesn’t matter as much, just a preference .. I also do it with multi-whole-grain-healthy crapola, if I’m in a virtuous mood ..
Yikes! I stopped going out or going to bed while the washing machine is on. One day it leaked while running and since the drum never filled, it never stopped flowing!
My wife was hoping we could all go down there tomorrow. Now I’m not sure where we’d go. We’re keeping an eye on developments to see where everyone lands, and what happens over the next 24 hours.
Have a great day molly!
I use Firefox 10.0 and have had no trouble this morning with refresh.
ooh BABY
Gosh. That sucks. I’m trying to find the positive here, and you just pointed it out :) At least I don’t have a mess to clean up.
Explorer would not load the full Firedoglake. Only this post without comments. Switched over to Firefox and all is well. Would NOT let it update when opened.
Nice to see you, Peggy. We miss you on the morning threads!
there’s a ga planned at city hall at 7 pm tonight. even though that’s supposed to now be a prohibited activity at city hall.
Big storm, lotsa rain. I have out buckets to catch it for watering too. In your case, I’d also consider saving bath water to flush with for a bit.
Thanks for the browser info. Yeah I don’t use explorer at all and I give Mozilla a few days or a week to let them de-bug new releases before I let it update.
Oh and the only bummer about gruyere cheese is that it costs as much as my GD house :(
And I miss the morning threads. I can only hit attaturk for a few minutes in the early morning now.
Good mornin’ Pups!
Where I am always glad to visit with you.
I LOVE be-deviled eggs!!!!!!!!
:)

**snort**
Thank you. I didn’t see that coming. Got a good belly laugh out of it!
That would be for Goulash de Rojo.
haha!
Season to taste of course.
Morning. Google will not show comments here this am. Re boot, notta. Switched to the Chrome and is now working. WTFIUWT.
Explorer is suffering identical problems. One browser doing it is m’eh but two doing the same thing sounds suspicious.
You got here! Glad something finally worked.
Ah! A new name can make all the difference.
Also google is not loading a full page, just one topic. I case anyone was interested. Running two computers here and same deal on both.
demi also has not gotten back on, and was trying to. Something is messed up.
How odd – it’s like some rolling internet hiccup; Chrome was all fine this morning, then nothing, and now it’s all fine again.
Bizarre!
Elliot are you behind the curtain this morning? Any idea whats up with the page load problems?
(tap, tap, tap, is this thing on?)
I’ve had zero problems with the latest firefox.
Wonder if it’s gonna hit firefox? So far, so good.
Edit: And maybe it’s just google based browsers…
I haven’t had any problems myself but reporting it to the serverlords
That narrows it down to Google is FUBAR.
The servergods obviously want snacks. And a shingle.
Indeed it does. I just opened Chrome on my TV to cross reference and it’s having problems with FDL. Comments won’t load and front page won’t load past the first 2 posts.
Too late for me to provide the sh*t for the shingle.
Ruth Calvo @104
After yesterday’s lecture, I decided on a no fat/no sugar dish!
Isn’t google starting some new “privacy” policy or something?
TMI
You finished it all? Marine’s breakfast, as I understand it.
Or there’s a flurry of football betting.
Morning Pups,
Just came in from the great outdoors with an appetite. Coffee first, though.
You. Are. Naughty.
And you can send me the cake, now before it’s too late!
:-}
Hey everybody – just got word of some possible server / load issues? If you can shoot me some more details if you’ve got them at brian@firedoglake.com I’ll take a look. I’m not having any issues here on a Mac and using Chrome… seems to be mostly folks with Internet Explorer? Let me know, sorry for any inconvenience this morning!
Sorry!
Good morning everyone. so it’s browser trouble for several pups. I thought maybe my computer was going flaky or dying. The desktop in the family room has internet explorer; I’m now on the laptop, and google chrome seems to be working ok.
Morning, all.
buzz!
Also did my business. LOL
Lots of salt?
The big server foulup would make interesting cartoon material, anyway, maybe all of us tapping on our screen with the rest all doing the same, not connecting from our parallel universes.
Now gotta get some stuff done, thanks for good company!
Later Ruth. I too have to get up and moving about. Thanks for the PUAC Kelly and I hope everybody has a terrific Saturday. I’ll be off and on for a little while though.
I am out also. Thanks Kelly. Have a wonderful week end, pups.
Kelly, thanks for hosting. It seems like early April outside today, with frost on all the meadows and woods. Sun is bursting, temps near 40F and no wind (yet). I’ve made a few notes here for updating my grocery list, thanks peeps.
Just got two nice, caught a few minutes ago, lake michigan whitefish and will be grilling those whole and stuffed with something later today. Back outside to clean them. The kitten is curious and following. Be good puppers, too nice to be inside.
Adios to the bustling firepups!
Man, I ain’t going nowhere. Was just out on the porch where Belch is shoveling the snow off the sidewalks and it is DEEP!
Leslie’s lawn flamingo? Totally buried.
Lawn flamingos! How fabulous!
Nice post Kelly, thank you.
Ados sadatos
Anybody ever heard of Shrimp Remoulade? DIVINE!! And,always served with chilled egg quarters on a bed of lettuce leaves.
Well, the sauce makes the best ever deviled eggs…and if you have some extra shrimp, chop em up really fine and put in with the egg yolk mixture.
Remoulade suace is mayonnaise based and in Big Easy parlance, considered “white sauce” ,as opposed to “red sauce”, which is usually catsup and horseradish.
These sauces are standard dressings for boiled shrimp and oysters(usually raw).
You have to watch out for the bird flu, however. It can be deadly.

LMAO!
heh…
