About Firedoglake
Hi SD.
Gooood Morning SoDrag and thanks for the post and host.
Good morning everyone.
SD, did I ever tell you, this Diner is Greaaaaaaaat! And so are the patrons.
morning, and thanks, SD. We have massive lack of water management throughout the West, where aquifers are drained to water crops that dryland won’t support, like corn. So how are we going to criticize Thailand?
Oh, Yay. Another day.
Good Morning, Southern Dragons and Other Happy Campers
Yes, Mr. Canyon, the patrons are pretty nice folks. Smart too.
We’re exceptional and they’re not.
Hate to hear that. I hope it doesn’t affect the wells in your area.
A year after President Obama admonished then Egyptian President Mubarak for using force against protesters in Egypt, Occupy protesters continue to experience police brutality and unlawful arrest, with President Obama’s apparent blessing.
Regarding Non Consent, Marxian Economics,Worker owned co-ops, and Peaceful Protest this article is a good one:
http://www.alternet.org/story/153929/how_swedes_and_norwegians_broke_the_power_of_the_%E2%80%981_percent%E2%80%99?akid=8187.20699.NZf-k4&rd=1&t=5
And now the Repubs are insisting on running the Keystone sludge right over and eventually into the best one in the West, the Ogallalah (sp.) aquifer.
Mornin’, pups
This week it was announced that the wells that supply a small town on Lake Travis have gone dry. The Lower Colorado River Authority has started to truck in water. It is, I fear, only the beginning.
Good morning demi, I hope your stress level has dropped considerably from the other day. I could not help thinking about the stress you were going through. I have to talk my daughter down more times than I can count, and this one is the birth mother that is causing the problems for the twin boys.
democracynow is going to have a segment later on Spanish judge Garcon’s trial. I’m really curious what the politics are around that.
Morning, SD.
It was 67 here yesterday in upstate SC. We have had several days in a row of strange temps for the end of January.
The Groundhog may just say we got 3 more months of winter this year.
That is really a bizarre case.
It sure is. That’s why I’m so curious about it.
Hey, you. I thought it was interesting that of all the gin joints, er no, wait, of all the different rooms in this huge FDL Lake House, that DW Bartoo picked The Diner as the place to announce the posting of his diary yesterday.
That says a lot about the patrons here.
And, there were some incredibly thoughtful comments generated.
Just a short drive-by this morning, I have to sub today.
Have a great day everyone and I enjoyed the early conversation.
SD! Pups! g’morning.
eCAHN, i saw one of your comments yesterday about red velvet cake. I agree, nasty stuff! I tried it once, yechhh. Just an excuse for people to drink bottles of red food coloring. Yep, the recipe calls for a whole bottle of red food coloring. yechhh.
Oh No! About 4 years ago we had drought almost that bad. It did ruin a lot of wells in our area but not to the point of sending in the water trucks.
That is terribly sad.
That reminds me. The Assange hearing is supposed to be televised. It may have already started and ended due to the time difference.
For those who asked, in my area we have no watering restrictions, as in 1943 the Red River was dammed to make Lake Texoma, which is a very reliable water source. This year the worst drought on record made it recede dramatically, but recent rains replenished it, and we are out of the drought stage now. Similar water projects were prevalent after the war and occupied returning soldiers – but all such wise management practices faded out as the Reagan revolution turned our government into a slush fund for corporate welfare promotion.
Much better, thanks. Like a kite that’s flown too high, sometimes, I need my friends to Reel Me In.
Things are nice and relaxed here. We’re all settled in and it’s really wonderful to have a house full again.
Many hands make light work.
I know you will teach them well.
Enjoy their energy. :)
So glad to hear that. Yes, our government is no longer what it should be.
Heh.
Red velvet was all the rage on foodnetwork when I watched it so much last year. It’s the first time I’ve tasted the real thing. Predict it will disappear like every fad.
Good, you all have adjustments to make, but the shared experience sounds to me irreplaceable. A good choice.
A lot of great comments, I haven’t looked this morning. One comment stands out, though. IMO perfectly illustrates the mindset of the tired old Democratic Party apparatchik.
Norway also elected a hereditary Monarchy. Yes, that’s an oxymoron.
They are very different from most of us.
First encountered red velvet cake when it was in a cookbook that was sold as a fundraiser, back in the 60′s. It was something I ran into again many times, as a special dessert. It was delicious the few times I tried it, must be over fifteen years ago.
And, that’s fine too. To disappear.
Perhaps this crowd would prefer Black Velvet anyway.
Thought of you the other day. We have an aloe vera plant that we moved to the back yard when it got too large for the side yard. It’s developed/grown an enormous stalk of blossoms – easily 5 feet tall – and the bees are going berserkowitz on it. :)
I have a recipe for the ‘original’ red velvet cake (made from scratch). It was called Coronation Cake and was in celebration of someone’s coronation — Queen Elizabeth maybe. It does NOT have a bottle of red food coloring in it, and it is actually pretty tasty. It’s a chocolate cake tinted red, with cream cheese frosting.
Good morning, dinerzens! I agree, we have a very good crowd here.
Good morning. Russia certainly has a major stake in the ME, it’s on their doorstep. I think there are some nuts in power in our country that think that we can simply push Russia around, and, anyway, we need a big war to show our strength. Additionally, if we don’t support the israeli government in its land grab and ethnic cleansing, apartheid ways, the world will blow up. I think that if we do support them, the world will blow up.
Ruth, we all were asking about Cleocatra yesterday. How is she doing?
That’s such a clever way to get people to go and read those comments….
Youz a cute scoundrel.
So! Whats your point?
Yes.
Agreed. Didn’t catch the meaning of the post at all.
thanks, everyone, for your kindness. As I had mentioned in recent days, Cleocatra kept falling. She had begun to wobble when she walked at all, and was not eating, much too thin. The decision stared me in the face, and yesterday I said goodbye.
A final picture, Friday, when she kept lying on my arrowheads as if she were hatching them, not much left of her, at 17.

The post was fine.
Good morning, all you morning pupses and thank you SD.
PP, that is a great article, thanks.
demi, good observation about DW’s choice of venue for his announcement.
I’m not of a fan of sweets. As I typed last night, if I’m going to eat something like that, I prefer a bit of a zing. The cake that my neighbor made for my birthday was chocolate (orange frosting since my bday is near end of October), with some espresso powder added. Now that was delicious.
Yeah bees!
Amendment to #33 – I guess it actually does have a bottle of red food coloring, if a bottle is one of those little ones. It calls for 2 oz. of red food coloring or 1 oz. and a couple of tablespoons of coffee. But it has a lot of cocoa in it.
I haven’t made it in years. But I remember it being pretty tasty back in the day.
Keep Calm and Carry On :)
I wasn’t speaking of the author, I was referring to the one comment.
Oh, sorry.
Greece will default in March, if they don’t lose their temper and tell the Germans to get bent before then.
Even if they do get the next drop of aid, that only puts the problem off until July or so.
But the markets have already figured that. Only the firms with overvalued debt on their books will take a hit. Which are mainly banks holding lots of government debt that have been pressured to pretend all is well. Like the French banks.
Boxturtle (We had to reboot the Soviet economy, we may have to reboot Eurpoe as well)
In so many ways it makes sense. I’ve thought for a while – years – that’s it’s such a waste for every single member of a family to have their own house, and the attending work, bills, etc. Financially it’s a help, I enjoy my son’s company during the day, and we all work together well and leave each other along well too!
DW’s diary inspired a lovely conversation yesterday, while we were chopping tomatoes, onions and bell peppers to make tuna melts for lunch.
Now, how fabulous is that?
Recipes vary. The one my niece made was a disgusting color and low on flavor.
{{{Ruth}}}
We’re way to the left of this person.
Oh, Ruth!
Surrounding you with hugs and much thoughts. I’m so sorry. She was beautiful and I am sure an Angel for you.
She was a very lucky girl, to have found you.
((Ruth))
Twooph!
Agreed, it always seemed that having huge roomy houses with one little old person in them, having to hire help, next to tiny houses packed with kids, was socially dysfunctional, and dominant everywhere I’ve ever lived. A bit of good sense makes all the difference.
I’m sorry, Ruth. But probably the best decision was to let her go at that point. I always figure that much as we love them, they are “dumb” animals in the sense that they cannot understand why they’re feeling badly or having pain. At that point we have to decide whether they have any good quality of life remaining, and act on their behalf regardless of our own feelings.
It certainly isn’t an easy thing to do.
Noam Chomsky speaks about the Occupy Movement and other topics in a phone confrerence from yesterday. Among his comments:
I’m so sorry, Ruth.
(((Ruth)))
(((Cleocatra)))
Thanks everyone, your good wishes have been helpful, and we all know this happens eventually. I gave us a day just sharing sunshine and warm visiting, after talking to the vet, and took her in yesterday.
I can’t believe it didn’t get front paged.
Good morning all.
Okay, I went to get a photo for you and realized I lied. It’s not an aloe vera but more like this.
Now that is another truth that can’t be said enough! Twooph!
Lot of truth there.
Good article. It’s not a coincidence that the Scandinavian countries rank near the top in most quality of life measures.
That’s a really cool looking plant. And blooms only once/century.
I have a HS classmate, lives in Los Alamos, who raises cactii from seeds. He sends around pics of them in bloom. I’ve never seen him send anything like that.
Ruth@40: So sorry. It’s the toughest part of being a pet owner and there’s no escaping it. In many ways, we’re more merciful to our pets than to our families.
Boxturtle (I have a cat with cancer now, just waiting until quality of life requires the vet trip)
Morning SD & Pups of Fire:
Morning after the night before…
(((Ruth and Cleo))) You have my sympathies and good thoughts coming your way. I am sorry Ruth I understand.
From an article on the same page as the “illicit mingling” one (sometimes following SD’s links leads to interesting other stuff):
But it seems it is produced DURING exercise, or as a result of it. Not sure how that is “without exercise.”
The style here at the Lake is more about News Items and Stories, it seems to me. It’s an editorial decision, I imagine.
But, the readers who want that kind of discussion can find the diary if that’s what they are looking for.
Don’t you think?
If you want to live the American dream, move to Denmark.
Yes, but they made it happen. I think we have to change our mindset and start living it now.
I have a lot of cacti and succulents. The one in the back yard is a relative of one that I had planted when we moved in 8 years ago. I had a lot of landscaping to do, but didn’t want to spend a lot of moolah. I was driving down the hill one day and pulled over when I saw a few plants in the middle of the road. Must have fallen off of some gardner’s truck. I snagged them and stuck them in the ground and they have gone crazy. I keep cutting off the parts that are getting too big and planting them somewhere else.
Have I said recently how much I enjoy Free!
Last time I looked last night there were 39 comments, there are 58 now.

The point is how national character and geographic location influences history. Consider that all the successful social democracies are also monarchies.
With Americans, that’s the hard part. Just look at the results in FL yesterday.
Sounds like some bullshit to me…
Yes but I think what the diary was about could cause others to rethink electoral politics. It would help with the change that everybody is always asking for. Maybe people would change and not vote R or D. I don’t know I thought the piece was front page material but that’s just me.
Rmoney didn’t mean the Paine quotes. He just thought he would baffle people with something.
Yes, but I wanted to see it again and really had to dig to find it. I thought it deserved a wider audience when I read it last night. Wider than it would get at MyFDL. Those of us who know DW would look for it. But it’s already gone from the MyFDL sidebar.
Nice.
I’ll see if I can find my friend’s email, send him the link and let you know if he has any interesting info about it.
Crossed the Andes in Peru at 16,000 feet. It’s like the moon, but stuff does grow up there.
Did you read in that article that the Swedes took a different route than the Norweigens?
Anyway, that national character is clearly what is missing in the US. Our character is to support Corporatism over all else.
Popeye –
How’s your wife’s car? It seems it’s always something, doesn’t it?
My mister is usually working from home, but he’s on a jury right now and so goes out every morning. Yesterday, he kissed me good bye and then returned about 5 minutes later with the sad news that he couldn’t start his car and so took my van. It’s probably just the starter. Another hundred bucks. And, me stuck in the house all day until he can fix the car.
And, no, walking to the store is out of the question. It’s about 4 miles to the nearest one and as much as the walk Down the hill is okay, the walk back up the hill is intolerable. :)
It is actually a pretty interesting read.
Newly Discovered Hormone May Help You Stay Fit Without Exercise
I believe their news outlets are limited to the same of NC, SC, and Georgia. It is no surprise to me. Those older folks in Fl still haven’t realized that the old conservative party has been hijacked.
Ha. I left it open in a different window.
And, I’m not saying that the subject didn’t deserve to be front paged. My comment was pointed to the editorial style at the Lake, and not criticizing either. Just pointing out how it is.
(((Ruth)))
So sorry to hear about Cleo. My deepest condolences.
(((Cleo)))
SD,
Garcon has made enemies on all sides of the political spectrum by prosecuting cases no matter who is in power. Mostly his enemies are right wing which still dominates Spanish judges, but also did a case under a socialist type (didn’t get details, something about Basques). So he’s a very inconvenient person to have around, as he threatens all PTB. Gotta marginalize him.
I have put off taking it in for some repairs because they were expensive repairs. I have spent over a $1000 in the last month replacing tires, lights behind the dash, and a headlight kit. She got hit in a parking lot and her headlight was damaged. The car will last to well over 250K miles it’s a Toyota Corolla 1998. It only has 130K on it. If only American made cars lasted as long as Toyota’s.
I read somewhere recently that Spain is going to “re-open” the war criminal charges against the US. I haven’t read that link yet, but wish to say more power to them.
That’s the way I read it. I wish I had paid more attention to the internal workings of Spain when I was there and Franco was still in power. Guess I was too busy havin’ a good time.
Thanks. I’d like that.
Thanks again, all of you are great companions. Sorry, SD, didn’t mean to run off with the Diner.
Have to do things now. I have narcissus in bloom, of all things, a few outside things are calling.
Sent it off. My friend is a character, so know predictions about whether he’ll respond.
Healing thoughts going your way.
Or Hondas. I’m still waiting for an affordable electric car. Or, something like this.
A character? No surprise. Takes one to know one.
We’ve got lots of characters here. Hmmmm.
Gotta take Mom to the doctor today, but I will call you tomorrow.
Agreed.
Also an item at the end about how Baby Doc is allowed to get away with murder. No prosecutions for any of those truly despicable sorts. Great examples of moral hazard bc it sets the example that the worse you are, the more you are allowed to get away with it.
No apologies necessary. I think everybody knows that with me the four-leggeds and their staff come first.
Yabba Dabba Do wow that is something. I think I will stick with a Toyota. LOL
Yup, you are correct. And it sometimes seems to depend on whether it’s a slower news day whether they front-page diaries or go mostly with DDay and Jon Walker and Kevin’s Occupy posts.
They were supposed to put those affordable electric cars on the lots this year. I haven’t been to look because I couldn’t buy one anyway, but they were touted to be here and ready for middle class budgets.
It might be fun to roll down the hill in, as long as the brakes worked, but I can’t imagine how I’d get it back up the hill. :o More exercise than I’m looking for.
I think you are correct that that is another consideration.
LOLOL!! Yup we sure do. And I love every one of them. They’re like family…sometimes they try your patience or get on your last nerve, but they’re still family.
You got that right. I would have a stroke pushing that up a hill. I get all the exercise I need swimming.
Not holding my breath on that.
Which brings up another issue of Doing Things differently. Does every single person in the household need their own car? Can we afford that luxery? It’s part of the future that we need to change.
And, yes, we are doing some car pooling here, now.
Can you even imagine how boring it would be to hang out with a Normal? No, I’ll take my funky friends any day, anywhere.
Back in the day when gas was 25 cents a gallon having a car for mom, dad and son/daughter wasn’t that big of a deal, even with the 8 cylinder gas hogs. Today it’s a different story entirely.
Yeah. I agree. Anything I can do to give less of my retirement funds that are to come to big oil the better. I am really working on a different lifestyle, not just because I’m unemployed. There are some things that I have to have and that is computer service and phone service. Other than that, the corporatists can kiss my arse.
I’ve really thought about this and decided that it was much more stress on my family to try to follow the American consumption/economic direction.
Normal? I think the word you’re looking for is “average.” *g*
The word I was squeezing my brain for was Eccentric.
You know the type. Political activists, Cat and Dog rescuers, Bee Lovers, Dumpster Divers, Goat Lovers, Artists and Musicians….
shall I continue, or can I have a little help with this list?
I am off to swim (in a pool). I hope everyone has a wonderful day. In response to doing things differently it is nice not having credit card bills, car payments etc and only my mortgage payment. Not buying things you don’t need it is really a great feeling. Maybe I am different but freeing your mind to concentrate on other things is eye opening. /rant off
(climbs down off soap box, sorry)
Most certainly another mind set that needs to change.
Those wheels remind me of a lawn roller. A big, round tank that you filled with water and rolled over soil before putting out seed or sod. With a handle.
When I was young, my dad was using one in our backyard, which was a long hill. He had been working back and forth across the fall line, and went for a drink of water or something so I tried to use it. Somehow…it got pointed more downhill and started going faster and faster. I was afraid to let go and soon it was dragging me along, lol.
That’s a great and funny image.
Oh, you.
A belated, good morning, everyone.
(In my best Bogie voice, demi) Well, sweetheart, the Lake has seen the beginnings of many beautiful friendships …
BTW, muh ears have been burnin’.
Y’all been takin’ ’bout me recent “foray” onto MyFDL?
ALL of your comments, my friends, to my wee diary of yesterday, are very much appreciated …
DW
Car pooling used to be the rule, rather than the exception. I remember my dad carpooling to work when we had only one car.

I had to read it twice and probably will read it again. One of the most down to earth diaries I have read in a while. Thanks again DW for your effort on it. :)
All I had to say was gin joint….
I loves me some schmaht cookies, D Dub.
LOL!
Yessiree. And, when people packed a sack lunch to take.
I was making my honey’s lunch the first morning the kids were here and asked GF if she wanted me to make a sandwich and she said oh no, my grandfather makes lunch for all of us. She works in her parent’s print shop that her grandfather and grandmother started. How, nice is that?
Oh, and talking about changing our life styles and water conservation…the showers have started here. The two new house members always shower together. (Any eye brows going up and down?)
I thought of you yesterday when I was composing my comment for DW’s diary.
Short-term goats, Medium-term goats, and Long-term goats.
(Sometimes I crack the shit out of myself.)
Yup, we were talking about you! Happy you are here! And your diary was excellent. Much food for thought.
Ah, to be young again.
All I seem to be doing this morning is typing big LOLs at your comments. You DO crack me up!
Eccentric. Hmmmm. It would have to be wierd in my case because I don’t have enough money to be eccentric.
Having them here is a great reminder. :)
Ah, to be skinny enough to want to even contemplate something like that!
Close enough, I think.

Sir,
Your recent foray exceeded imagination for many. I wish to thank you for the wisdom and common sense you brought to topic.
Also, I would like to know if you have had any other forays into the books of children lately?
Nah, not here. But the novelty of that usually wears off after awhile, in my experience. On the other hand, I have a shower that would accommodate about four people, and there’s just me! I’m not sure why the bathroom was designed that way.
Ruth, you and your Cleocatra have been much on my mind.
You both remain in my thoughts … and remind me that Feurae, who is twelve, and going blind, which he deals with remarkably well, loves his water-bowl rituals … which he daily insists that we share … indicated, some minutes ago, that he would like me to give him some “nip” …
Off to the catnip bowl: The usual suspects line up like this: Feurae, first, then Thelonious, and then … Romeo, my daughter’s wee Yorkie-Poo, who always licks the bowl clean … he thinks he’s a cat … and the nip seems to have a calming effect.
With luck, I shall return …sometime … soon.
DW
Don’t start! As I am trying to get rid of clothes, I asked her what size she wears. Gah! You don’t want to know. I am going to give her my favorite Little Black Dress. It will never fit me again, so I might as well. Ya know?
Is it wheel chair accessible? Wondering if that’s what they were thinking.
Oh, ya, I know *wry smile*
Feurae is going blind? What’s that all about?
Good Morning, All…Ruth, I am so sorry. It’s so hard, yet you know it was time. My thoughts are with you and Cleo, and I know you were a good parent and have happy memories…My best for the coming days.:(
No, quite the opposite. The shower is at one end of a longish narrow bathroom, and the outward facing side is frosted glass, with a narrow door. The floor of the shower is two steps down. The vanity counter runs along part of one side, so the actual door into the shower is only about 24″ wide.
Some other villas in the complex have “garden” tubs, so perhaps this was supposed to and the original owners rearranged the layout or something.
Hmmm, the old the Bigger The Better philosophy? And, you’re not even in Texas.
Good morning, freedom and revolution (and evolution) lovers. Just got here, SD, re your comment last night about the (unnamed by you) Dem Establishment commenter to DW’s diary, DW has now posted an individualized response to him that is definitely good for a belly laugh. Imagine, naming oneself after a cigarette!! LOL
I’d much rather have a luxurious shower than a garden tub.
In Sweden, my parents’ house had a bathtub that was long and deep and narrow. Strange looking, like a horse trough! Seriously, though, I’m 5’6″ and I could slide down completely under water before my feet would touch the other end.
Good Morning Pups,
It’s almost coffee break time before I can catch up on the comments.
Be careful…we can’t help it that we are big and beautiful…and funny.
I have drawn plans for constructing a Japanese style tub. They are smaller diameter and deeper. In historic images you can see that the actual bathing is done from a bucket of hot water while sitting on a low stool. Once clean, then in for a good soak.
I just love that image….
In case you missed my earlier comment, go back and check DW’s response to that commenter that irked you lol.
(((RevBev)))) that wins comment of the day! Here, have a sticky bun :)
I would never use the tub, so I’m happy not to have one. It would just get dusty. LOL.
I like the shower. But it’s a huge chore to scrub it down, so it doesn’t get done as often as it probably should. At a guess, it’s about 4′x4′ and is entirely tiled, including the ceiling.
You mean you don’t actually fill the tub?
Wow, you betcha…Thanks for the comment and esp the bun…:)
Helps one stay big….
I went to a Japanese bath house at Japan Center in San Francisco, and there were no tubs, just faucets coming out of a long wall at intervals, and the Japanese ladies sat on stools and scrubbed, and then there were regular-height showers in rooms for after the scrub. It was quite an experience.
So sorry for your loss, Ruth. Cherish those good memories through the tears. We all know the pain you’re feeling. (((Ruth)))
Unh hunh. And we all need to stay BIG!! LOL.
I know. We have one of those garden tub things, and have used it exactly twice in almost three years. Dust magnet, agreed.
I hate cleaning the shower, too. The only way to do it is while you are in it. I’m surprised I have any skin left. Or haven’t blinded myself.
That didn’t sound right! I mean, by using cleaning products… I should probably just delete this, lol!
LOLOL!
Sounds like those group showers after gym class…did I hate that? Almost made my shy sister go all the way nuts…Don’t know what they do
now.
I knew exactly what you meant. Tee hee. Fortunately mostly I don’t have to scrub down the entire shower, because water never hits a lot of it. So I can scrub the walls from about 5 ft down, and the floor, and the step of course which gets mildewy.
I really slept in this am..weather here is beautiful, cool, not
at all cold. Rained during the night…really calm…Ommmmm, as
our friend says….
…obviously, a lot of the rooms here are bathrooms!
I’ve got to go get a shower. Please behave, pupses.
Safe travels, safe home, and especially…safe showers.
ohmmmm
Yes, the tub has is filled with water. One sits on the low stool on the bathroom floor and washes (floor drain is necessary) before entering the hot tub.
The tub is not made to be a small pool to invite 10 of your friends. Less water to heat but more than enough to thoroughly soak sore muscles.
*g*
Oh, I see. That really does make sense now. I like, too, a bath that lets you soak all the way up to your ears. The one you describe is a much better use of water (and less use of water).
I clean mine with diluted vinegar in a little spray bottle. Rinse with water. It is never “gleaming spotless” but never near atrocious.
The mischievous imp in me says that someone should link DW’s diary into all the latest TBogg posts. I can’t do it because I’m banned there (badge of honor!!!), but it would probably make explode some heads that need exploding lol. Those are some of the most hidebound Obamabots I’ve ever seen. (eye roll)
Gloomy here, but still relatively warm (40º) after climbing to 55º yesterday. Really unusually mild winter so far. I thought about getting the bicycle out yesterday.
Really agree. Some of us, like me, are so ignorant we don’t even know how to be aware of interesting diaries that have been written.
realitychecker @148 & 154
I believe civil discussions between people who disagree on political and/ or philosophical matters is a bedrock progressive priciple.
Laughning at and mocking those you disagree with is not.
Vinegar is such a good, natural and nontoxic cleaning liquid. I use it on the floors. We have just wood and ceramic tile, very easy to keep clean. I just use vinegar diluted with water.
The shower, though, is another kind of adversary entirely. Mostly glass, and I go after it with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser made for bathrooms. And a squeegie.
Truly gotta go! bye, y’all.
The two vets (a second “opinion”, being sought) who have examined Feurae say that it appears to be hereditary. Feurae has always had eyes that are very differnt from any cat that I have known, they are more luminous and deeper, seeming to have layers beyond the gold-green … Feurae is totally blind, now, on the left side, the eye presented some cataract-like “spots”, which then disappeared … the optic nerve seems to have simply withered or ceased to function.
Yesterday was warm, here, SD, about sixty degrees, so the cats and the dog all spent time outside, in the fenced-in back yard.
Feurae is a beautiful animal, his is big and moves like a tiger, he is still wicked fast and quite able to catch birds and chipmunks. He loves to run and has a favorite tree, an arborvitae, which he approaches in a high-speed run from some forty to sixty feet away, he races up the stem (which is free of limbs for some distance) some fifteen feet or so, he then surveys the yard for a few minutes before descending, backwards, as cats do.
Feurae is very healthy and strong, so it is hard to realize and accept that he daily is experiencing loss of visual acuity. However, as I say, he exhibits no clear distress and maintains both his position in the hierarchy (top cat), without resorting to violence, and his wonderful, calm equanimity … he is a true prince among cats.
DW
I don’t mind a little gentle laughter and mockery if it’s not nasty. Going into someone else’s “house” and calling them nasty names and (in effect) shitting on their floor is unacceptable. It surely does nothing to sway people to one’s point of view, nor does it promote civil and reasonable discourse.
And with that little rant, I’m out for awhile. My weekly volunteer gig awaits.
Good morning, DW. You haven’t lost your touch. Still a thought-stirrer. Kinda like a Julia Child for the mind lol.
Me, too, I gave away my little black dress ages ago. Now wrestling with the question of when to give away my big black girdle. And to whom.
Thanks. Makes me sad.
DW, Just read your FDL piece. It is so thoughtful and realistic. Thank you for giving the thought and time to share it. I guess we all have deep yearnings for the future to look better with peace and concern for one another. I really appreciate your clear-eyed view. Congratulations and thank you.
Nobody is more devoted to the principles of free and open debate than I am. Along with getting heard comes the possibility of being derided. Perhaps you should take derision as an educational opportunity?
msmolly @ 178
When have I ever done that?
I wouldn’t describe it as irked. It just shows me that despite all that has occurred over the last 30 years there are those who chose to not see what has happened to the Democratic Party. Not that he’s alone in his views, the Party itself is representative of them. Changing the Party from the inside would require a change of mindset within the entire Party. Not. Gonna. Happen. A party message of “We suck less” is apparently acceptable.
I would agree with that, as long as the “house” in question does not belong to one whose entire identity is tied up with scatological verbal bullying. In which case, fuck him if he resents getting his own medicine thrown back at him. Hypothetically speaking, of course . . .
She’s not talking about you. She’s talking about the people who come here and do what she describes.
LOL. Relax, you’re not the only one who attracts criticism around here. I strongly suspect that comment was for my benefit. :-(

Mollygirl –
You are one rawking mama. Have a great day.
I have the van for the next hour, so I’m going to run to the market to get carrots and an onion or two as I am making a roast for tonight.
Eat well, share warm thoughts and get a little sunshie vitamin D.
Take care, all.
I, for one, am not getting too serious, as I’m still cracking myself up.
That is the single most important thing. ;-)
SouthernDragon @184
Good. Thank you for the clarification.
I have read and participated on this news/coffee forum under its various incarnations probably as long as anyone. Over time it is has moved to the left. Many folks of a more moderate political temperment have moved on. I have stayed. With that comes being on the losing end of most discussions. I understand and accept that.
I do appreciate and respect your work in keeping this forum open. As such, I have tried to conduct myself in manner that honors that.
GM diner-zens. Not even time for a cuppa today, but I did want to send hugs to (((Ruth))) and say that (((Cleo))) looks so beautiful in her last photo. It is so hard to say goodbye to our loved ones.
Little Momma had surgery yesterday, so I am off to the hospital shortly and then to Santa Fe for legislative committee hearings. The House Memorial opposing Citizens United passed yesterday, and the Senate will vote next. Gov. Who Emulates Jan Brewer cannot veto memorials, and they will then go directly to the voters. There are some other issues pending today, so long day before I get back to my kittehs again.
Blue skies above.
Hah! That is … well, words cannot convey the depth of what … I … um … what?
That’s key.
I don’t have any idea of what that key … is … for.
(However, as long as I know “what” a “key” IS … then I’m okay … right, rc?)
Thanks, rc, that is, most certainly, beyond a reasonable doubt, momentous recognizant non compostus dementuous …
;~DW
Just to chime in, I’d like to thank every one for your support for Ruth and each other here. It is, after all, what it’s all about.
My condolences. Yet, you were both so lucky to have shared so many years together.
Thank you for the links postage, SD!
Sorry my friend I don’t visit that thread. Too over te top for me. I prefer the Diner, Caturday, PUAC. Like I have said electoral politics are dead to me. DW diary is so on the mark and I bet he spent most of the Holidays writing it. I think that is why he was absent. Speculation of course but that is my assessment.
Yes I agree and second that assessment. :)
I did not mean to limit my suggestion to an action by you, popy. I would hope that anyone would do it.
Please continue to participate, and please don’t take things too seriously. Disagreement is just a signal that somebody needs to think some more about something.
You talkin’ to me lol?
{{{ Ruth}}}}
Without the animals that pass through our lives I think the death of our closest family and friends in life would be unbearable.
It’s still hard. Peace to you.
Very Sweeeeeet.
Enjoy the day and best wishes for Little Momma.
Another thing that I like is Blue Skies.
Thank you.
Actually, popyeye, I confess that I tossed that diary together yesterday morning. I realized that yesterday’s diary and the next one, which is acomin’, were necessary to set the stage, or form the ground-work, the foundation, for what I was actually working on during my recent “hiatus” …not, incidentally, that I suggest that what goes on “here”, is an “argument”, as it is much more a learning-dialogue …
I’m a hopin’ that I might hold the interest of a few of you, as I’m going to be discusiing (or cussing, as the case may be) “fundamental principle” as it applies to civil society and economic systems. Consider, that the essential principles and values of a society determine the nature and “direction” of the political economy which a society embraces, and, conversely the “values” of an full-blown economic “system” may “become” the “values” of a society, rendering it either more, or less, civil and sutainable.
‘Twas SD’s suggestion that we all become more conversant with and about what Marx (and his two co-authors) had to say about capitalism, and the role which, historically capitalism was expected to play, regarding, equality, brotherhood, and freedom, which sent me back to scribbling in my notebooks (I always have a bunch, ongoing), with a renewed and invigorated perspective … as those values and principles are central to what Marx had to say and what he still, very powerfully and correctly, has to say and share with us, today.
DW
I’m still a tiny bit jealous of your knowing our Ruth in person.
Glad to see you, Spudster.
(You’re one of the characters here now. Like it or not. :)
I really like what you just said.
And, on edit, what you said the other morning at PUAC, about reliability.
I am sorry, oldgold, you haven’t as far as I know. Others have, and seem to think its OK.
I didn’t mean you. So sorry to be unclear. I was simply expanding on your comment. I don’t always agree with your views but you are ALWAYS civil. I enjoy and learn from differing views. In fact, I think there is a bit too much echo chamber going on sometimes at FDL.
I too have enjoyed reading your comments, even when (which is Not all the time) we disagree.
Hang in. Hang on.
I admire people who hold their beliefs.
You were honest yesterday on DW’s diary, and I don’t know why some people have to make a Federal Deal about what someone said, and go on and on about it.
But, on the other hand, there’s a lot that I don’t know why. :)
And here we are over 200 comments again!! This place RAWKS!!
It do, indeed.
SD, if you are out computer shopping would you please pick up some printer paper?
First Amendment stomped on again

If I don’t like the person who occupies a home (virtual or physical), for whatever reason, I do not visit that person in their home. I do not go to his or her home uninvited and insult or disparage, no matter how much I might like to. It’s like crashing a party and insulting the host and peeing in the punch bowl on the way out the door.
And that is my last comment on the subject.
You can only do that so many times, before someone or something grabs your leg and breaks it.
Thank you. I have never seen a comment from you that would put you in the category msmolly refers to. To the best of my knowledge you’ve been a civil commenter in the time you and I have been here, which is considerable.
I realize that you and I will rarely agree in our political analysis and I don’t have a problem with that.
We picked up a whole box of printer paper just the other day.
I think we can spare a ream or two for you. :)
It’s the Office Depot brand, so I hope that’s okay.
Poifect, thanks! That’s what I use, too.
You saved me a trip out in a downpour :)
I guess that’s what happens when you speculate eh? I am in awe that you wrote that just yesterday. My hat is off to you and I look forward to more diaries from you. I learn so much here and I appreciate everyone’s effort. I guess I have a lot to learn especially in the area of economics. :)
Don’t get wet unless you have to.
I’m happy to help.
Heh, going after lunch to pick up a new Lenovo tower. Don’t think I’m gonna find any printer paper at Best Buy, though.
As I previously indicated to you, I don’t seek that person out, but when he appears on the front page here, then he’s in MY place, and it’s fair to engage him on his own terms. And “his terms” is abusive and scatological, that’s his stock-in-trade. You MUST know that, so it’s more than a bit ironic to me that you choose to be his champion as to civility. I am quite certain that you are unaware of my personal history on that site, and you seem to be similarly unaware of the treatment accorded to any who disagree with that host. Anyway, he has banned me, so that is the ultimate concession of being a pathetic whiny loser in the blogosphere, IMO. I do not treat anyone else the way I treated him, and you must know that.
I agree with you, msmolly.
I should like to imagine that EVERYONE, here, and that includes those who are on the “masthead”, especially, by way of example, would behave in accordance with a clear understanding of civil and thoughtful discourse and with basic respect for each other AND for each other’s perspectives and opinions.
And that … is my last comment on this “subjest”, as well.
DW
The problem is that the meeting will long be over by the time Fox or ABC can get back in. I trust Mr Fox will sue the crap out of them, individually.
Using your comment as a springboard to say that since David Harvey’s Reading Capital, Vol 2, has been up on YouTube (last Friday morning) there’ve been over 2100 views. No way to tell how many people have watched the poorer quality vid at his website. I’d have to say that’s pretty impressive.
Does Marx have all the answers? Absolutely not, but he’s got capitalism nailed, no doubt about that.
You’ve already been told, it’s the staff at FDL and not the Writer of the post who does the banning.
Cease this train of thought, for you own good.
They are so full of it. I visualize them being rolled from the feet upwards like big, fat tubes of crap toothpaste.
How much ya wanna bet that if the film crew had been hired by either of the Kochroach brothers there would have been no incident?
Pretty safe bet. I know those whiny shits cut mics and that kind of stuff, but isn’t this going a little far, even for them?
Fitey cents. It’s all I got. :O
But, in other ways, I’m rich as a queen.
demi, I don’t take kindly to any veiled threats sent my way for my “own good,” and I also don’t think any commenter here has authority to tell other commenters what they can and cannot say. Also, it is not in my nature to roll over and pee on myself just because somebody decides to reach out, unprovoked, and criticize me for my style. Since you and msmolly could not resist bringing this unpleasantness here to the Diner, let me just settle the matter by reproducing a few lines of the matter that we are referring to, and everybody can make their own judgments. And that will be my last comment on the matter. realitychecker January 21st, 2012 at 10:00 am

You don’t got it, moron. Hitler’s supporters were just as blind to his negative aspects as you are blind to Obama’s. OR, maybe you just like the taste and smell of shit too much to consider any other diet. Because shit is what you are eating when you continue to support Obama. Assassination. Indefinite detention. Criminal Justice department. War criminal status under treaties we signed. Silence re Occupy persecutions. None of that ever bothers you enough to get mentioned. So, it is fair to conclude that you just like the taste and smell of the shit. Just like the Germans in the 1930s did. Got it now?

I have removed realitychecker’s response and any other comments he makes from this point on will be deleted. Quite frankly I don’t have time for his kind of bitter mewling and I’m sure people are as tired of his bullshit as I am.
If he doesn’t like it, too fucking bad. It’s my blog and he can die in a fire for all I care.
ON EDIT: CIVILITY is also in the eye of the beholder, I guess.
Ok, mugs washed, everything dried. We need something upbeat to listen to, right now …The Game of Love
OMG.
I think I better put my roast up now.
See you lovelies later.
Thanks, sweets.
I’m gonna turn it up to 11 and start chopping carrots.
Everything’s Gonna Be Okay.
The back and forth over civility/banning has gone on long enough. Everybody take a deep breath and cease and desist.
Done and done, SD. No disrespect to you intended.
None taken. You’re cool.
If you are interested in an offensive comment, here is one.
Romney has a Van Gogh’s ear for politics.
Yeah, that one’s everywhere ya look this morning.
Back to work.

OmAli if your lurking thanks for the coffee. I received it today and can’t wait to try it. You shouldn’t have but I thank you from the bottom of my heart. It was a lovely gesture. (((OmAli)))
PS. I had gotten one of those it’s my blog…I think that is outrageous. This stuff is set up to be a community, so I really did not appreciate that sort of “ownership”…Cannot imagine SD doing a “get off my lawn”….;)
It seems the Diner is in a bit of disruption today. Yes Bev I agree with you we are a community and should be getting each others back. The time is coming when all we have is each other. :)
God Bless you, sister.
My balls aren’t that big, or spine strong enough.
I salute you.
I mean, as long as we’re lifting up the truth about how we see things, and all.
Sometimes, demi, we gotta hep each other lift that heavy truth-stuff, just to set each other free, gotta be careful, though, with all that pissin’ off that SD warns us about, first thang, every week-day morning … sometimes it goes ever which way … and, sometimes, there is a prodigious amount of it, enuf to raise the “see?”-level, around the world, I reckon.
;~DW
I can’t say here what I really think about this particular issue.
But, of course we have to help each other.
I guess there are different ways of helping others see things the way they should. Lotsa different styles of that for sure.
I have sad.
;)) Oooops, did I say something outrageous? O dear. I didn’t mean to
offend anyone. Thanks, dear.
A handy map to use in order to make sense of what you’re reading regarding Tibet and a quick primer on the rampant ecological destruction underway at the “Third Pole” (third largest source of glacial fresh water after the North and South Poles).
I hold it as important that we should be able to share what we really think about things, demi, always, within the silken bounds of thoughtful courtesy and genuine politeness, which we both seek to encourage.
In the vein, it seems that, too often, the “see?” is a stormy insistance that others accept “veiwpoints”, not on the basis of shared reasoning, but on the premise that volume, or perceived “power” trumps both reasonable pursuasion and ammenable exchange.
Guess it’s something else we all have to work on together. Heavy lifting.
DW
I know it’s late – it’s taken forever to read thru the comments!
The only thing I’m going to comment on is Ruth and Cleocatra.
I feel really bad for you, Ruth; you’ve been telling us bout Cleocatra for so long. I know how hard it is to reach the decision you did. Thank you for letting us know; we’ve been worrying.
(((Ruth and Cleocatra)))
Awesome visual! I’m using it.
Hi popeye, out running errands and checking in by phone :). You are so welcome, it was fun planning a surprise. We have enjoyed the music so much and just wanted to do something you would like, in return. See you later, ohmmm.
Glad you like it, you prompted it, lol!
I hope, too, he sues the crap out of them.
It was a surprise. :) Thank you again I will enjoy it.
You are so welcome.
I need to get a new grinder. One of the blades broke on my old one and even though the remaining one still spins….just doesn’t do the trick. I bought a French Press and want to grind not quite so fine so I don’t clog up the little strainer. Dang, I was out on errands this aft and didn’t even think of it. Oh, well, tomorrow is another day….
I have an older Zassenhaus hand grinder. Looks pretty much like this:
http://www.sweetmarias.com/sweetmarias/grinders/manual-grinders/zassenhaus-box-mill.html
That is really pretty. The modern, plastic ones have no aesthetic appeal and they pierce the eardrums.
on edit: I used to have one of those brass turkish ones, but it kept spitting out metal shavings, it was lethal.
Hand grinder will work when there’s no power and it ain’t safe to drive to the store for batteries.
God forbid you should be without your coffee. Now that would qualify for unsafe conditions :)
Brass too soft for grinding apparently. No, I don’t want any brass shavings in me coffee.
Working on tomorrow’s Diner already? Do you ever take a break?
Heh, while all da neighbors be whinin’ about no power and nothin’ works I’m just truckin’ along. Small grill made outta stacked bricks next to the porch under the eave for hot water and cookin’.
Unless it is storming and blowing, that is a good plan. Kind of fun, like a camping trip :)
Did you see any of these decals when you were traveling in Europe…
Asterix and Obelix
Apparently, not, LOL.
I’ll just grind some coffee, while I wait….la de de da….with my teeth…..
Not yet. Sittin’ here listening to the radio
Blam, lost power for about a second and shut everything down. Then M$ wanted to install updates when I booted up.
No, didn’t see any stickers like that when I was in Europe. I don’t think they had stickers like that when I was there.
Won’t start on the Diner until after I finish feedin’ the tigers. Cleaned the boxes while waiting on Windoze to update. Now goin’ to feed da tigers, sit on my ass for about an hour or so then do the Diner.
Glad you hadn’t been conked on the head by a meteor. I’m going to start dinner and have a glass of wine. Have a good evening, scritches to the little ones.
In the 70s they were a real craze. More like window clings, though, and as big as entire car windows.
Have a good break between chores :)
Hey, Where did you go? HOpe all is well…B
:)ng here. Why not?
Heh
What can I say?
It’s just true. Inspite. And, within Context. :)
Did you get to the store today?
Yes. And, the roast was a huge success.
That’s what I like to hear.
I’m off to me tree.
Be good to yourself.
Namaste
I bet some of your roomates would enjoy a small bowl of roastuff. Okay, in the morning. :)
Thanks, SD.
