Newt Gingrich has all but erased Mitt Romney’s 23-percentage-point lead of a week ago among Republican voters nationally, and the two candidates are now essentially tied
And thanks to the Supreme Court time for the “Chubb Group” of the Gingrich Campaign to continue the underwriting:
Gingrich pal and wealthy businessman Sheldon Adelson will offer up another $5 million in funding for Gingrich’s super PAC, Winning Our Future.
And to think of all the episodes of NOVA that could make.
I still think in the long run, Romney will be “settled” for, not because he is loved but because he’ll do…but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t love to see this:
Veteran GOP Operative Steve Schmidt: Look, I think, not only are we not moving towards a coalescing of support by the Republican establishment for Newt Gingrich, we’re probably moving toward the declaration of war on Newt Gingrich by the Republican establishment. And if Newt Gingrich is able to win the Florida primary, you will see a panic and a meltdown of the Republican establishment that is beyond my ability to articulate in the English language.
To the Octagon.

A must see event. Where can I buy tickets?
Although I personally don’t believe y’all speak English. American yes. English no.
I can see Quiet Rooms Against Newt.
Newt tore the door off a frickin’ tank.
Not to argue but Willard did that, not Newtie.
Good morning, pups. Today it’s Brooks, Cohen, Nocera and Bruni. In “Free-Market Socialism” Bobo gurgles that in his State of the Union address, he’s hoping President Obama promotes policies that will help more people realize the American dream. I guess Bobo, given the title of this thing, is a fan of The Doughy Pantload. Mr. Cohen addresses “The Sarkozy Effect” and says the French president’s political courage is undeniable: A lot of people who can’t stand him now sense they may need him. Mr. Nocera continues his crusade. In “Living in Fear of the N.C.A.A.” he says in the saga of Ryan Boatright, Part II, there is more evidence of how the N.C.A.A. wrecks careers, ignores due process and punishes the innocent. Mr. Bruni, in “The Gusts of Gingrich,” says the candidate hasn’t grown careful, and it doesn’t seem to be hurting him.
Here they are.
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got apple walnut muffins. I managed to completely avoid yesterday’s debate, but from the clips that I’ve seen the claws were out. I think they’re going to have installment 47,208 on Thursday, which might be fun since I believe it’s sponsored by the Hispanic Leadership Network and the Florida Republican Party. Even though the Hispanic Leadership Network is right wing it may be fun to watch Mittens and Newt and the rest of the clowns dance around the immigration issue. Have a great day.
Actually, I credit the low taste of voters very much. Newt has made headway with his canting about food stamps.
Thanks, Marion. ‘Free-Market’ usually refers to deregulating industry so it can steal, kinda the opposite of Socialism. So Bobo is gurgling oxymoranic nonsense as per the usual.
Good morning all.
My Q is: Where the f have the R stalwarts been that they let their prez stable get so thin that it can be challenged. They’ve been at the building of the stable for decades, from grass routes up. Why is there no depth at the top.
How about Holy fucking shit?
They’ve also spent decades creating an unhinged, boorish base composed of a coalition of Conspiracy libertarians, social conservatives and racists. One thing all three groups have in common is an overabundance of hatred for others not them and a well cultivated belief that “liberals are destroying America”. They’ve unleashed the monster and now they can’t control it.
Never saw that coming. Not.
It would be nice to think that there are increasingly few people who can stomach right wing ideology in defiance of facts. I would think that, but then I see the rallies and hear people with dark complexions mocked and jeered, and don’t make that leap.
I see it, but I still don’t believe it. The “Family” GOPers so hate Mitt (Religion? Too far to the LEFT?) that they’re willing to ignore all Newt’s “family values” transgressions? Amazing.
Perhaps his statement about ignoring the law and stopping abortions is making a difference.
Boxturtle (At least if Newt is the nominee, my vote is easy. Distasteful, but easy)
I grant you that. Holding such a disparate group of low hanging fruit together is more likely to produce compost than fruit salad.
Still, it is another problem to have only one person that the establishment can agree on. There are dozens of megadonors, who are willing to put up as much as it takes to get their guys elected. And the office is POTUS, for crying out loud, not dog catcher. You’d have thought that the megadonors would have scores of people willing to go for the most powerful position in the world, willing to do their masters’ business, and highly competently trained.
It’s funny that the Republican establishment created their unhinged base and then pushed for the Citizens United decision and now both are being used against their anointed candidate. The irony fairly drips.
LOVE that line!
The only bad sex is librul sex.
I don’t believe for a moment that there is a shortage of potentials.
But maybe they all became hedge fund managers instead.
It’s the market solution, dontcha know. They make a lot more money in the short and long run as vultures and hedgies. And don’t have to worry about public scrutiny.
In that light, one has to wonder why Romney is bothering.
Not bad for 7am. Not usually that alert at this hour.
The insistence on absolute ideological purity is a huge part of the problem. No chance of reason or nuance any more.
Dunno about that. He was always expected to do well in SC. In fact, if he couldn’t win there, you could make the case he couldn’t win anywhere.
Perhaps the media, seeing all the airtime they’d planned to spend flogging the election turning boring, is generating this surge for Newt. Or maybe the Not-Mitt folks have finally decided to be heard.
In any case, it’s going to be superpac vs. superpac!
Boxturtle (What sore of costume does a superpac wear while fighting? Tights? A zoot suit?)
Don’t forget the country club wing of the party.
Boxturtle (Though I suppose you covered them with “boorish”)
Instead of law school they got MBA’s – and retired before they were old enough to run for any offices.
I have to admit I’m enjoying the irony too. I’d but Karl Rove a drink just to bring the subject up and see if his head explodes.
Boxturtle (I’d probably wear my Browns Grocery bag while with him, so’s not to be recognized)
You’re right of course. They sort of are the Republican establishment though. :)
Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it! :-)
Boxturtle (*rim shot*)
Splits along ideological purity lines?
First they have to find a librul willing to lower him/her self.
Definitely more money to be made being megarich and sucking off the govt teat than it is to be a pol sucking off the megarich teat sucking off the govt teat.
Somewhere in there is a purity ball.
It’s like a beehive without the worker bees.
Isn’t Snooki a democrat? If not, I’m sure at least one Kardashian is.
Boxturtle (If that’s not low enough, I’m afraid they’re stuck. The Spice Girls are all already married)
Colony Collapse Disorder. AKA Disaster Capitalism.
Cannot watch the stuff, have missed seeing the decline of civilization.
They’re like a pet owner who has a rat and a cobra and has to feed them at the same time.
To be noticed when the drones and the Queen do not get any more feeding and tending. Oooops. (Thank you, Rick Perry, for the end quote.)
I can’t either. But they seem to be SOOO newsworthy that I can’t watch a newscast without a reference to one or the other.
Boxturtle (I’m not sure we could knock them off the newscasts with anything less than The Second Coming)
Wow. Just turned on WJ for the first time in months. Callers haven’t a clue. One who was just on air thought Iran was blocking sea (didn’t even know the name of the Straits of Hormuz) to prevent Saudis from getting their oil out.
Usually I’m embarrassed to admit I’m a white guy. Except when I also admit that I get food stamps, for which I’m pleased because I can generate more contribution to improve the economy by spending my dollar on something other than food.
Then I think of the slimy newt who lies about that. Or is too stupid to know about that. Probably a hybrid of both. What a fuckin’ incredible loser. Makes my food stamps seem like a bastion of intelligence on top of being a boon to economic stimulation.
(Spoiler alert) The climactic fight in the Octagon is between brothers. Comes right down to it, Willard and Newton are the two sides of the same wooden nickel.
Current caller on WJ luvs her some Newt bc he is a bully. Of course, she phrased it: stands up for himself.
Then the caller should run for the gooper preznitential nomination.
He would certainly give Newt a run for the money in a debate, for talking the most nonsense.
I had to turn it off. The display of gross stupidity was overwhelming after 2 calls.
Meltdown of Republican establishment is first step toward meltdown of the PTB (no hope right now among Democrats).
I wonder how many abortions Newt has payed for in order to cover his many marital transgressions.
He drew the short straw.
If there’s a brokered convention, and both Romney and Gingrich lose out, this leaves the door wide open for a new kind of reality show. “Desperate Republicans”, starring Newt, Romney, et. al., anybody?
The main stream media is nuts. It isn’t entertaining, rather downright boring. The talking heads were spinning the same nonsense about Hillary and Obama.
It does appear as if no one of any substance and/or “quality” (for lack of a better term) wishes to run for POTUS anymore.
I do believe that the ability to be incredibly rapacious in ripping off the system for one’s own privately personal gain & profit has trumped the urge to be, as they say, the “most powerful leader in the world.”
Who gives a shit about that? Being POTUS is merely to be a puppet figurehead anymore. POTUS’s, despite W to the contrary, “decide” very little. They dance to their 1% Masters’ tunes.
For someone like Barack, who wasn’t all that wealthy, it’s certainly a way to get a platinum handshake and assured wealth after it’s all over.
I can see why Newt wants the “job,” bc he, too, needs the money to maintain his lavish lifestyle complete with 2, and soon to be 3, alimony payments.
I guess the enduring question is why some mega-wealthy creation like Mittens is so “interested” in this particular “job.” It’s not like he needs it.
Is it time to re-register so we can vote in the R primaries for Newt?
Who cares that Newt’s a laffer?
The election is all scripted.
Obama, Newt, and Mittens will all govern according to their masters’ interests, i.e., the 1%.
