- “China’s export-dependent economy grew at its slowest pace in more than two years in the final quarter of 2011, Reuters reported. Officials from the world’s second-largest economy announced today that gross domestic product grew 8.9 percent, after measures were taken to tame inflation and create a buffer from the global debt crisis. This is the slowest rate of expansion since the second quarter of 2009.”
- “A group of hedge funds is threatening to block a last-ditch attempt to save Greece from defaulting on its huge debt pile, unless they are guaranteed a significant payout. There will be a final attempt today – when a group representing Greece’s private sector bondholders meets senior ministers in Athens – to negotiate a writedown of the value of the country’s debt ahead of a crucial bond repayment deadline next month.”
- “Thousands of Greek workers took part in rallies in central Athens today and marched on parliament in protest against austerity measures as European Union and International Monetary Fund (IMF) officials arrived in the city to inspect Greece’s battered finances. Around 10,000 protesters participated in the demonstrations, according to the Associated Press, disrupting public transport and other services. No ferries left from its main ports, and journalist unions began a 48-hour strike.”
- “Gurkhas today claimed they were being unfairly targeted for cuts after the [UK] Ministry of Defence announced around one in 10 posts in the brigade will be axed. Up to 2,900 members of the Army, 1,000 members of the Royal Air Force and 300 members of the Royal Navy, including military top brass, will be made redundant in the latest round of Government cuts. The MoD confirmed 400 Gurkhas with more than six years’ service in the 3,500-strong brigade will lose their jobs.”
- “The European court of human rights has blocked the deportation to Jordan of Abu Qatada – who has been called Osama bin Laden’s right-hand man in Europe – because he risks facing a trial based on torture-tainted evidence. The Strasbourg judges upheld the British government’s strategy of attempting to deport international terror suspects to countries which have given diplomatic assurances that they will not face torture or inhuman or degrading treatment.”
- “The Chinese authorities have indicted a veteran dissident on subversion charges for writing a poem urging people to gather to defend their freedoms, his lawyer said yesterday. The dissident, Zhu Yufu, is the latest activist facing such charges in a continuing clampdown. The 60-year-old, from Hangzhou, was arrested last April for “inciting subversion of state power”, a charge often used against critics of the ruling Communist Party.”
- “The European Union’s executive body says it will take legal action against the Hungarian government for failing to make disputed reform laws comply with EU legislation. The European Commission said on Tuesday that the new laws undermine the independence of the national central bank and judiciary and does not respect data privacy principles. It said it had found enough evidence to start legal proceedings, which may end up in a court case later this year.”
- “Guatemala may be facing a violent escalation of the drug-war ravaging the country. New president Otto Perez Molina has promised to deal with the cartels with an “iron fist.” But will it work? If Perez Molina, a conservative retired army general, is true to his word, Guatemala could end up repeating the experience of its larger neighbor Mexico, where nearly 50,000 have died since President Francisco Calderon took a strategic decision to meet the narco-traffickers’ fire with fire in 2006.”
- “The European Commission should consider passing legislation to prevent finance generated within its member states being used to support illegal Israeli settlements in occupied territory, the bloc’s top diplomats in Jerusalem and Ramallah have advised.”

About Firedoglake
SD, thank you for the post and host today.
Good morning everyone.
Good morning, AC2, pupses and SD.
I really need that coffee today! I was thinking the Diner was locked and SD had the only key.
Actually, I was sitting there hitting the refresh key on Attaturk’s post thinking, SD must have overslept, LOL!
The hedge funds have made the calculation that they’ll do better cashing in their CDO/CDS holdings than they will from dealing with Greece. Don’t blame them, they’re probably right.
If they cash in their “insurance”, that’s going to cause everybody to cash in their insurance. Meaning banks that are currently solvent or able to pretend they’re solvent will suddenly require government bailout.
I think France might simply buy that debt from the holders. That would be the cheapest option to protect their banks. Germany will threaten the funds with horrible consequences, but won’t do anything that might look like german money going to PIIGS.
Boxturtle (I’d have already cashed in my CDO’s and left the game)
Good morning AC2, all Dinerzens and SoDrag. Thanks for the post and host SoDrag.
Have been hopping busy the last couple of weeks and unable to spend time at the Diner. Miss being here with y’all. As busy as we’ve been it may get worse. Of course that cloud does have a silver lining. Job security.
Occupy Diner!!!!!!!!
Boxturtle (Out of tea, hiking to cafe, brb)
Good morning all.
“Dinerzens” I like that.
Looks like some of the patrons are beginning to arrive.
OmAli, you are not alone on thinking the diner was late opening. SD put up the post, I commented and then…nothing for awhile. Good to see everyone today!
Good morning, glad you could at least poke your head in for a minute. Are you guys hiring, or trying to do everything with the existing work force?
Just hike your little self over here, we have a great assortment of teas :)
You probably heard me knocking on the door and (muttering) under my breath, loudly.
On edit: yes! Dinerzens is great, oldnslow.
Looking, somewhat desperately, for experienced people. So is every other machine shop in Texas. At least shops that do drilling work.
Good morning, everyone. Thought I’d get here in time to plug in the coffee pot and flip on the lights, but I see that AppleCanyon2 beat me.
Brrr…20º here this morning, feels like 8º (according to Weather.com).
Another platter of tasty reading up top, SoDragon! Thanks. And anyone who missed Bill Moyers should hop on over to Moyers & Company and watch his latest. And then pass it along to the naysayers who want to make excuses for income inequality. (SIGH. Another book to add to my reading pile!)
Good morning. You and Cahnstance staying warm?
Molly, do you have that PBS app for your iPad?
These reactions just go to show what SouthernDragon has built with his start-up diner. Good conversation, good topics, and a great start to our day after meeting up with friends.
Yes. Only 2 days of real cold. Now up to around 30.
Mornin’, pups
Decided to give meself a few extra minutes sleep. Just to help fight off the cold.
Does is seem that this upturn in work will be sustained for a while? Maybe some areas of manufacturing are on the upswing?
Shivvvveeerrr !
Smartwool socks, for sure.
Are you feeling much better?
U.S. mayors are watching carefully to see how this is done.
Good morning, eCAHN. Did ya get your password problem fixed yesterday?
(ssshhhh. don’t want to jinx it)
Just got a call for subbing. I am going to miss the conversation going on.
Have a great day everyone.
The truth comes in strange forms.
http://www.gocomics.com/nonsequitur
No problem, I was knocking on the (wooden) Diner door for a while, you’re covered :)
Nice to have the work, but we’ll miss you.
Take care and have a good day, AC2.
A little, not much.
Fourteen people were arrested yesterday at the Supreme Court for protesting the resumption of the use of the death penalty in the United States.
No, I don’t. I didn’t know there was such a thing. I just went to billmoyers.com on my laptop last night. That’s how I watch what little “TV” I care about…on my laptop, sitting in my leather chair.
I used to take the iPad to my volunteer Docent shift on Wednesdays and watch Rachel Maddow, but since I got my paying gig I’ve been working while I wait for the occasional person looking for a tour.
Yes. Thanks to all the suggestions posted here, I was able to figure out the right direction. Then my more computer neighbor came by to help me execute it. Turns out the free download wasn’t allowed (not official Windows version, LOL). So I had to pay $20 to download the official one.
A character in one of my favorite Terry Pratchett books, Going Postal, put sulfur in his socks to ward off colds.
Advertise in Dayton, Oh. We’ve got a ton of unemployed CNC operators, Landis operators, pattern makers, etc. If they thought there was work, they’d move.
Boxturtle (mostly ex-autoworkers)
Actually I heard that factory orders and employment numbers are on the up-tick. We are seeing an aggressive increase in both quantities and orders. And of course, they want it all last week.
Reminds me of the origin of the term “going postal.” I lived in Royal Oak, Michigan when the postal worker shot up the post office there. Is the book about that incident, or something else?
Machinists with down hole experience are writing their own ticket in Houston right now. Most shops there are paying signing bonuses and moving expenses.
We’ll get better results if we ignore the moral aspect and just focus on how much more it costs and how little we get for our money.
Boxturtle (Be sure to explain why we can’t just shoot ‘em)
It was a great show and well worth the watch. I know you have a lot of books to read but Bill Moyers Journal is really good. :)
Morning all.
Oh gosh no. Fantasy/satire and just plain fun.
Perhaps so. The rest areas I drive by before dawn are FULL of semi’s, as are the full service truck stops. And many of the exit ramps as well. This was not true over the summer.
Boxturtle (they’re shipping SOMETHING and it can’t all be drones)
Greece had 10,000 protesters we need to step up ours. As long as the police can goon it up it will be hard to make change.
WOW. Go over to Wikipedia. It’s really happening!!
One of the lines that I love is when Moist von Lipwig was about to be hanged, “I commend my soul to any god that can find it”.
Whoa. Striking graphic. And contact info.
Good job.
I have Bill Moyers’s latest book in the stack, but I was actually referring to Winner-Take-All Politics. Moyers interviewed the authors, but woven in were scenes from a hearing in DC and at the end, stuff about Occupy.
They said it was going to. Google is doing something as well but not shutting down their site.
Yes I saw that and it was great. I just wondered if you had his book. *g*
This issued yesterday.
The problem is, this is an issue that can’t be faced factually. Emotional and political concerns get in the way.
Yeah, it’s in my pile. But I keep taking detours. Right now, I’m reading Stephen King’s latest (11/22/63) and it is really good. Sometimes I need a break from current events. And the little work gig is taking time from my day.
The banksters are starting to worry that they won’t get ANY of their money with all of these protests. They’ve rented the technocrats, but the technocrats are rapidly losing control, if indeed they ever really had it.
Still, it is mildly embarassing that a country as small as Greece can consistantly out protest America. We maxed out a few decades ago when they interrupted the end of an overtime football game with a broadcast of Heidi.
Boxturtle (Let’s just say THAT won’t EVER happen again)
On the stark Google home page, they’ve blacked out Google and added
The best thing is the zip code link to representatives.
I watch the trains. Same thing though. Traffic is way up.
With a big black “patch” over it. I personally think the Wiki shutdown is more effective. Actually, I wish they’d shut down Facebook. That would get some attention, too!!
Agreed. Facebook is like breathing to a lot of people.
I’m willing to accept the right decision for the wrong reasons. If I can stop executions by focusing on the tax dollars spent and the resources wasted that could otherwise be chasing illegal immigrants, I’ll do it.
Boxturtle (If it costs me a few years in Purgatory, at least I’ll be among friends)
Yes. Follow the link:
Google. End Piracy, Not Liberty
Occupy Purgatory!
They’re actually discussing the death penalty in FL based on its costs.
Neither of my senators are currently answering their phones. My rep’s phone is giving me fast busy. Perhaps we’re having an effect.
Boxturtle (How does one communicate with a congresscritter who’s only issues are taxes and abortion?)
Very kewl.
And it goes to the petition page! Very clever.
Kewl, as far as Google is concerned I don’t use it. I use Ixquick cause they don’t record my IP address. Trying to fly as low as i can under the radar.
There’s your chance. NEVER let the GOPers forget how much more it costs for a quick, easy death than it does to feed ‘em bologna on a calorie restricted diet through a slot in a door.
We could try a campaign like “if Gov. Scott were to commute all of death row, the state would save $X million in taxes. And they’d still be locked up”.
Boxturtle (Once you’re got a GOPer looking at money, the only thing that will distract him is abortion)
Lively discussion on democracynow betw state super of ed vs. local educator on suspension of Latino studies program in Tucson.
I signed it and posted it on my FB. So are lots of people, and many are using “Stop SOPA” as their photo today.
I know it’s frustrating to hear why people won’t stand up. I guess people aren’t hurting enough yet.
I think there are ways to block that. The stuff I google can’t be terribly interesting. I should keep track and post a list. Prolly good for a LOL.
I wish I had the slightest bit of hope that all the signatures in the country would make any difference. What the 1% want, the 1% will have.
The pessimistic me thinks petitions are just the more sophisticated version of dipping a baby’s fingers in honey, then handing him a feather.
It’s not easy. Occupy Delaware had an meeting scheduled with U.S. Senator Chris Coons yesterday, but he called to cancel.
The folks at the Capitol left their calling cards yesterday. The stuck Occupy Congress stickers on the closed doors of people in Congress. Darrell Issa got one.
Google is built in to Firefox’s toolbar. If you enter a search term, at the top of the results page the “Google” logo in the upper left also has a black patch over it.
Thanks for the tip about lxquick. I’ll give it a try.
Twitpic has a stop censorship banner over its logo too.
I still use Yahoo! I get better search results than from Google.
I am sure there is but me being an IP idiot makes it hard. I try to use freeware as much as I can. So far no problems.
Yeah, I do despair of the results of petitions. But this shut-down of websites may get some attention.
It’s a little slower but it’s just as effective.
Good Morning.
We had thunder and lightening last night. The animals were sorely afraid. I guess that means we will have winter percipitation in about 11 days.
Whoa, shit, lookit the Great Orange Satan
http://www.dailykos.com/
Oh, I am sure you already know, but in case you haven’t heard we here in SC are having our phones ring approx every 45 minutes. I’m not joking now. Serious. The robocalls and polling calls for Goopers has been like an attack on the household.
Same here, late afternoon and early evening. “Winter event” predicted for next week.
Angus, my old Airedale, used to be so afraid during thunderstorms. He would head for the interior bathroom and lie, panting and drooling, in the corner until the storm was past….
Candidates can always point to an incumbent’s ignoring the petitions of his/her constituents in campaigns.
Looks like people are serious about this huh?
Awwww, that’s so sad. It’s taken Skoshi 9 years but she no longer hides under the fur-niture during storms.
That sounds like me LOL. I hate storms.
The first big boom of thunder I had a cat on my chest, a Yorkie in my lap, and a black lab on my feet!
And you all jumped in unison.
Heck, some areas were under a tornado watch! In Ohio! In JANUARY!!!
Boxturtle (It’s sure lucky that Al Gore is still fat, or I’d be worrying about warming)
doesn’t there come a time when ‘growing’ stops?
if their economy is still growing at all it’s doing fine as far as I am concerned
SD,
I’m slow this morning. Is that Kos blackout in protest or something else I haven’t caught on to?
A good site to find good freeware is download.com FWIW
Yep! LOL!
I’m glad she has lost some of her fear.
Can’t visualize her…what does she look like?
msmolly should send you a burp cloth :) Probably works well for drooling, too.
Set your phone to call forward to the local GOP HQ. Ignore it for the rest of the day.
Boxturtle (your friends will call back)
Ouch!
TWOOPH!
In shipping, they would have shipped out our spring and summer goods before our Christmas Holiday seasons. We in turn sent them scrap metal, fan motors, and chicken feets.
We had tornadoes south of St. Louis the other night. It was 67 degrees.
Now THAT sends a very clear message!! Bravo to them!
LOL
Sure. Made with your choice of trims and colors, even.
Well I’m off to swim (in a pool). Have a great day everyone. By the way the Blue Dragon coffee from YSD is delish. If you love coffee you need to get some. L8trs.
All about SOPA. See the large print in red off to the left at the top?
Have an excellent swim!
Gotcha!
Raw Story is closed for the day as well.
Have fun, popeye. See you later.
It’s really funny here. I’ll be at the table when a big boomer lets go and all of us jump in unison. Hilarious.
Rawstory gone dark.
yo!
not too active since obama betrayed his country and party, am looking for a new hero and won’t be energized till obama is out of office
ditto for Smirking Chimp
Owe ya a drink.
Good rundown of SOPA here: http://theoatmeal.com/sopa
Wondered where you had been. Glad to see you here. Can I pour you a coffee?
I know it. It is amazing how those animals can make one large leap in their intended directions. Too bad I can’t prepare myself prior to the tackle.
Whoop! Perris is on the TWOOPH train!
I’ve decided that I will demand a paper ballot with space to write in a candidate. I see us going nowhere with the right to vote on black box machines or establishment candidates.
Skoshi
Looking for heroes is an exercise in futility. Be one.
HOW BEAUTIFUL! Just look at those ears with whiskers on them and those thumbs. Just an awesome specimen of the cat world.
Thanks I hope to. It’s hard to get energized to go out when it’s 18 degrees outside. :)
Bye Om have a great day hope to see ya later.
Brrrr! Yeah, but it will make you feel good the rest of the day because you did go out.
Okay, I’m off to read my favorite sites that are still open today.
Hugs all around!
I’m with PP. Such a perfect mask, and it looks like she has bangs.
She is so intent upon you. Looks like she is gathering herself to jump up into your arms. She is a beauty. Thanks for giving us a photo.
((PP))
Me, too. Take care!
Good morning, all,
“inciting subversion of state power”, isn’t that what is going to be used now in the US to shut down protest. In addition to ndaa we have this new law stripping us of citizenship without a hearing. What that amounts to is that none of us are citizens, we are only allowed to live in this country as long as someone rich or powerful doesn’t desire our removal. I know that I’m am often redundant, but weren’t or freedoms what “they” hated us for?
Beyond that, we don’t need to look for heroes. We need to work for good laws. We were once a nation of laws, not men and women.
Now that we no longer have freedumbs, have they stopped hating us?
Very well put.
Off to swim in the great capitalist cesspool.

Well said.
Late with this. Glennzilla’s on a roll!
Chris Dodd’s Paid SOPA Crusade
Just in case anyone thought he was one of the good guys.
Edit: Chris Dodd, I mean, not Greenwald.
Oh yeah, the kitteh with opposable thumbs.
Heading out, too. Thanks, SD.
Stay warm and don’t get disappeared.
Safe travels and safe home, pupses mine
ohmmmm
Glenzilla doesn’t have kind words for Pat Leahy of Vermont.
Right Wing Mexican President Calderon stole the election with the help of the USA. So they could continue a bloody drug war.
Guatemala has a right winger too now. Imagine that. And more bloody killing for drugs and money.
Meanwhile The Lefty (snark) Obama makes every effort to prevent the legalization of Marijuana.
All the evil fockers are in on it.
OT, as I understood it, OBL had to be on kidney dialysis. That is a very hard thing to do in a hospital and takes a lot of time. If he was in Tora Bora, he could have done maybe one dialysis (this, of course, is stretching it), after that being on the run would have made it impossible to repeat. This is a procedure that must be done every 2-3 days max. Once the “chase” was on for him, there was never any mention of the kidney problems again. Can anyone explain this to me?
eCAHn and Om, I think that our govt is doing its very best to make sure that we are hated around the world. I think that the feeling is that the armed aggressions will make everyone fear us and it won’t matter if they hate us. The empire will continue on the fear and hate path.
It’s doing a pretty good job of that here at home, too.
Or Howard Dean…
I approve of today’s mini-masthead. There’s sprightly traffic at #wikipediablackout of folks who have communicated with their US Congress folk re SOPA/PIPA (more from emptywheel in “Save the Internet!“). Don’t forget the elimination of EEA while you’re at it!
Video: “Anonymous – EEA, SOPA & NDAA“
That wasn’t up when I got here this morning.
It looks like it changed in time for opening of business, DC time. Some folks are doing the #SOPAStrike (very sprightly traffic) from 8 AM – 8 PM in their time zone.
Now I have that repeating, endlessly, through.my.head.
I’ll try to find something equally annoying to leave for you before washing up time…… :)
I’m surprised that we’re not all black today. I *almost* didn’t bother to check.
Good morning, Pups. Can I get a cuppa that Blue Dragon I keep hearing about? BearCountry, I don’t know what you’re fretting about, my friend. There’s always a silver lining. In this case, the silver lining is that the Muslim terrorists have no reason to hate us anymore. (They will be replaced immediately by the 1% and the Dem politicians lol.)
SD, what a pleasure to chat with you yesterday! It’s cool to talk to an actual person instead of fonts.
heh heh heh
Likewise. Too bad we didn’t have more time.
One cup of Blue Dragon sliding down the counter to you. Morning, rc!
Time is always in short supply for me, sadly. Been really bizzy lately. I forgot my manners yesterday and didn’t ask if you are recovering from the ick.
Hey darlin’, sending you much love. I never thought I’d actually get any of the good stuff coming in so late and all lol.
So, what happened with Riley’s lump? I assume all is okay since you haven’t mentioned it again?
I wish. It remains unchanged, but now I’ve discovered he also has a cyst on the inside edge of his left eyelid. So, I’m keeping an eye on both of them.
Poor Riley. Scritches for him. Doggies can be very resilient–all those years evolving in the wild and all.
I’m not going to panic yet. But I hate to have anything about his health be less than perfect, he’s led a charmed life so far, and that’s the only dog I’ve ever had that I can say that about. Thanks for asking, ysd.
I haven’t forgotten that Dodd helped the bankstas ring-fence a whole class of people for asset-stripping inclusive of that JIT change in the bankrupcy law in 2005. What a piece of work.
Sorry RC I can’t keep up with everything that is going on here at the diner. My brain I think is in the last stage of remembering things. Sorry about your dog. I understand and I hope he recovers fully. He is in my thoughts. (((Riley))) Please forgive my forgetfulness. :)
Just time for a lick and a promise for the dishes, then out the door again.
Just for you Fionnghuala
Makes at least as much sense as the Walrus, lol!
Another fantastic guitar player. What makes this so amazing is that he plays on an acoustic guitar. Check him out.
Good afternoon all.
Popping in late just to see what’s going on.
I think the blackouts are a great idea…weird, maybe, but it seems to be making the point. Also the censoring, like DKos and TBogg.
Apparently it has already changed the minds/positions of two senators..Rubio and…and…OMG! I don’t believe it! MY benighted idjit senator CORNYN!
Spose that means I should send a thank-you email? It’s so rare that he actually gets something right.
Gotta go off and do an errand, then work on the project for my mom. She’s a worrier.
BBL
Having a coffee (at an undisclosed location) and checking in by phone. Rubio and Cornyn are such slimy creatures. I don’t trust either of them any farther than I could throw, er, squirt him.
No need to feel guilty, my friend, especially with all you’ve got going on. I don’t know that either of these cysts will really turn out to be any kind of threat to Riley.
Thanks I want to know everyone here as best I can. I just have a hard time with my memory function. It’s frustrating for me I always seem to be catching up with almost everything. I want to be an active member of this community because someday we might be dependent on each other. Sigh! Thanks for understanding. *g*
popeye99 – you are an active member. It’s okay if something doesn’t hit you instantly..we aren’t IM-ing here, after all. You are doing just fine; already you are a valued contributor. Didnt ya know that?
And just for grins – on the very serious topic of the day – check out “The Day the LOLCats Died” over at Digby.
Now, I really am going out to do my errand. ; )
You must cut yourself some slack. You are one of the warmest and sincerest people around here, and much appreciated for it. ((popyeye))
Thanks for your words. I have always been hard on myself. Old habits die hard. Thanks for helping me do that. :)
Thanks my friend. I appreciate it this is a very fine community. It’s amazing that we pick each other up when someone is down. The world could learn a few things here. :)
Popeye, this was the first chance I had to listen, and he was great. Liked the lyrics, as well as his playing. Always enjoy it when you give us some links. Thanks.
I can make you a at least 2 cd’s of his music if you want. *g*
You are such a kind and generous person. Can’t keep letting you do that :) Let’s email and if you would give me some suggestions for a few favorite tracks I can download them to my phone.
Have a great evening. Is it still hockey season?
((popeye))
Yes till June and I don’t mind sending you cd’s. It’s not a problem at all. :)
