Following a tradition of people born to millionaires who declare themselves self-made, Mitt Romney shows no sign of becoming self-aware.
Romney’s “envy” remark came after Lauer asked about the concerns of “anyone who has questions about the distribution of wealth and power in this country.”
“I think it’s about envy. I think it’s about class warfare,” Romney said.
That certainly appeals to his base.
They knew his sweet spot was among older, higher-income voters — those with annual household incomes of between $75,000 and $150,000 and with upscale interests like gourmet cooking.
As long as Top Chef doesn’t move to Tuesday the rest of the primary season should be a breeze.

About Firedoglake
The Romney apparatus has been marinated in Microtrends. But at least his people know enough to stay out of the way of Restore Our Failure.
morning all,
Another out of touch candidate for “peoples president”, one for each of the “two people’s parties”.
I see a huge difference between people who make $75,000 to $150,000 a year and the Romney wealth. He probably got that kind of money for an allowance when he was growing up.
Inherited a brainwash, didn’t he? The poverty of moral standards for use of his inheritance is downright appalling.
Oh yeah…. Totally envious of Willard, that’s me.
Good morning, pups. It’s Kristof and Collins today. Mr. Kristof addresses “The Value of Teachers,” and says a new study suggests a great teacher is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars in increased earning power to students. It’s time to overhaul our education policy. Ms. Collins gives us “The Primary Primer.” Don’t worry, people! With the South Carolina primary coming up next, she gives us the answers to the most important questions that are surely on your mind.
Here they are.
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got waffles with warm maple syrup this morning. I’m starting to think that my ‘puter may be tottering along on its last chips. [sniff] Getting a new computer was most certainly NOT on my list of things to do, but I may have to bite that bullet. Fingers crossed I don’t have to… Have a great day.
I think Jefferson is again correct!
I hope we shall crush in its birth the aristocracy of our monied corporations which dare already to challenge our government to a trial by strength, and bid defiance to the laws of our country.
Thomas Jefferson
Human nature is unchanged. Enthroned Corporate America, their false god ($$$$$) and Greedy Bastards?
Thanks, Marion, of course with salaries being cut, those terrific teachers have no reason to go into the profession in the first place.
For email and blogging I have a tiny notebook that didn’t cost much and is perfectly great, love that it’s portable. For pictures and big things, still have my about ten year old Compaq Presario, which seems to go on forever, albeit slow.
Willard is the corporate aristocrat,Jefferson warned of! He shovels shit for the 1/10 of the one percent, who enslave America to protect business models, fucking US! Yup slave owners challenged the rule of law and initiated a “civil war” to protect money. Willard is no different, except he likes to fire corporations that many are in servitude to, under the color of law. From healthcare to energy, we the people are exploited, while others profit grossly at our expense? Hey Willard, Republican emancipated the slaves!
Ooooh, sorry…bummer and bother. Hope you know a good source to make it easier.
People born with a silver spoon like Willard are so clueless. They think this is about large houses, fancy cars and wide screen televisions when it’s about such luxuries as food, education, healthcare, a safe place to live, etc. I think “envy” is the wrong emotion to assign to that feeling you get when you have to decide between paying your electric bill and taking your child to the doctor.
What kind of notebook do you have?
Hopefully most voters will realize that it isn’t about envy, it’s about surviving for the working class.
Somebody should put together a montage of Willard’s “Let them eat cake” moments. I’ll bet it would be loooooooooong and disgusting.
It’s a Samsung N150 Plus, my son did the shopping for me;
http://computershopper.com/laptops/reviews/samsung-n150-plus
Lovely little thing.
Yup, those that inherit money did not earn it! They where born into the aristocracy, and seek to maintain that status, automatically, at the expense of life and liberty?
His moment in the sun telling about travel with the dog on the roof makes a nice beginning.
Yup, those that inherit money did not earn it! They where born into the aristocracy, and seek to maintain that status, automatically, at the expense of life and liberty? Jefferson and our founders where dealing with an amoral aristocratic corporate whore, which had a King’s backing? So, what is America dealing with today?
Envy?!? Geez, Mitt, most of us just want a job. We’d be happy with an old Chevy, don’t need the Bentley.
See, it’s reached the point where the Dr bill for our children is more important than that second bottle of Dom after your dinner.
$100M from your stash would put a lot of people to work. And you wouldn’t miss it, except for the fact that some of it would surely go to “those people”.
Boxturtle (Not sure who “those people” are today. But it’ll be a different “those” tomorrow)
Willard, another chap born with a golden spoon, educated at Harvard, offensive and as out of touch as Bush. They hate us for our money! Let us talk of our raping and pillaging of the land and the people, behind closed doors.
There is no justified outrage of people unable to obtain a living wage, to feed their children, to have a home, to be able to provide health care to your loved ones. No my friends, all such outrage is just envy of Romney’s money.
Envy like competing with the Jones. Romney owns three homes. Jones only one mansion and a yacht. Romney has Grey Poupon. Jones ran out of his. Romney has a Bentley. Jones only has a Mercedes. This is the world Romney lives in.
Its about Americans being pigeon-holed by corporations who buy law to maintain “profit” at the expense of liberty and life.
Yeah, what kind of sociopath does one have to be to hear that story and think benign family man?
On a nice day, my husky will take the entire car ride with her head out the sunroof. She gets really upset if we don’t open it. Stupid dog would probably enjoy a ride on the roof.
Boxturtle (doG is my copilot)
Just your average GOPer.
Boxturtle (Is this a contest? What did I win??)
She’s secure inside at the time, though. Put her up on the roof with the wind blowing all around and no human companion and you would see a different attitude, I am sure.
Right down the street there’s a little wizard who owns his own shop and builds them himself for less than the big box stores. And services them when they get hiccups. Jack’s a treasure, and we’re glad to have him.
It was a rhetorical question so you win a rhetorical point. Gotta go to work where I’ll labor for nine hours or so, always being envious of Willard.
Don’t know, but I’m not going to try it! She doesn’t get to do a lot of things that she’d like to do and this is on the list.
She’s on a low protein diet that she doesn’t particularly care for, I think she’d open her mouth and catch bugs the entire trip.
Boxturtle (And lets not think what her next kiss would be like)
Heard a statistic that many Americans, possibly a majority believe that the super rich worked hard and deserve it. Still. Today. After everything. The propaganda is hard to undo.
That is great…something you can trust and so convenient…Takes out alot of worry.
the Mittster will be happy to relieve you of that responsibility, or at least any rewards for it.
A friend of mine whose company was bankrupted by Bain, taking out a loan against its assets that couldn’t then be repaid, says fellow workers who were stripped of their pensions are so deluded they will probably vote for Mitt if he’s the wingnut candidate – because the Dems spend too much according to the rightwing propaganda they listen to.
While i wouldnt vote for romney or a republican or a democrat if my life depended on it, at least hes honest and open about what a clueless self serving asshole he is. Id like to see that from obama. Whos a pathological liar.
Yuk, windy and cold here…Do I have to go to work this am? That would be yes..;)
Here to the north of you, the winds were fierce enough to wake me up. Now its 27F, not outside weather.
Can you be honest when you’re that clueless…He does appear not to know what comes out of his mouth or what he may have said before. Sorta scary.
Thanks…I had wondered. A good day to stay in, huh? I think somemore of the cold is coming this way….
Some of them DID work hard to get that loot and did earn it. Some didn’t. Mitt didn’t.
Doesn’t change the fact that the super rich need to make contributions to society, too. Mitt could take $100m of his money and make a real difference. Or he could buy CDOs. If the government raised that $100M in taxes, it would not get spent on CDO’s.
Boxturtle (In Barry’s government, it would buy Drones)
Yep. Yesterdat I picked the greens from my garden, will have a nice little store of fresh things, anyway.
It’s supposed to turn nasty here this evening. Right now, it’s 40F and rainy.
Boxturtle (It’s 40F at 7:30am in central Ohio on Jan 12. Global warming is a myth. Al Gore is fat)
I think what i was trying to say is that at least he doesnt try to hide the fact that hes a self serving clueless asshole. Id like to see obama and the dems do that. Then again actually they barely even hide it themselves these days because they know we’re stuck in a “lesser of two evils” mentality in this country.
Makes an interesting contrast with Warren Buffett, who makes buys of companies that he then improves, rather than strips of assets and employee benefits.
Cold and rain…Stay warm and dry, if you can….
Warren Buffet is a value investor. In part this means he has to sit on the stock or company longer to allow its value to mature. I used to be a somewhat fan of the guy because he sounded fairly smart and democratic. But in recent years hes really sounded more and more like an old geezer. And personally i no longer pay attention to anything he says.
Of course, Buffett has been very supportive of hippy values like paying taxes and being sympathetic to his employee needs.
‘Announcement in November 2011 said that in the last 8 months Warren Buffett bought around 5.5 percent stock of International Business Machine Corp (IBM) with value around $11 billion. It’s surprising, because Buffett always said he would not invest in technology because he largerly did not understand it. The reason to buy was IBM can retain most of their corporate clients, while the others can’t do it.[59]‘

It doesn’t seem as if most of us would equate our struggles in this economy with Envy, imho.
You.don’t.think.like.the.people.who.can.be.tricked.into.voting.for.a.new.Son-King.think.
But.those.folks.vote.
Of course it’s envy. Doesn’t everyone want to have an Osmond family, to be trained at Harvard to steal other people’s pensions, and then to go on to ruling the world.
And that hair! What man isn’t envious of those hair follicles?
It’s what drives conspicuous consumption…Gotta have that to make everyone feel they don’t have enough stuff.
The old geezer would have had a Nobel Prize in economics if he had trained his sights towards academia rather than investing. He owns up to his mistakes, and he’s made a lot of them. Just not as many as everybody else. Also, he doesn’t squeeze the people who work for him. He fired his heir-apparent last year for doing just that. He doesn’t fall for this MBA bullshit about squeeze out the last penny of shareholder value, because he knows you can’t really do that, since the value depends on the viability of the company down the line. If all capitalists were like Warren, this would be a better world, given that it is a capitalist world.
All Willard is doing is spouting from the propoganda wurlitzer because it works! We have seen a number of rightwing trolls right here at FDL saying the exact same words in the exact same order as Willard pooped out:
Trolls here have told ME that I am LAZY, that I need to get off of my ass and get a job (forget the FACT that I’ve had 2 jobs for *years*), that I am just jealous and green with envy of the mega-rich, and that it’s all MY “problem,” and that I am engaging in class warfare against rich, who *worked so hard for their money.* blah blah blah call the waaaambulance please.
Mittens spews forth these predictable falsehoods because they WORK. The propoganda is so firmly entrenched that, as one commenter above indicated, citizens who’ve LOST their jobs bc of Mitt’s corporate raidings will go ahead and VOTE for Mittens because Mitt is a “job creater.”
I’ve given up trying to reason with such people, who seek solely to vote against their own interests time and again.
That said, the so-called “Democrats” aren’t ANY better…
Buffet is as sleazy as the rest of those mega-rich, but he has some grains of compassion combined with good old fashioned “horse sense.” Buffet is an old school kind of guy, who operates from different principals than the “brave new order” as represented by Ivy League MBAs like GW Bush & Mitt Romney.
Thinking people who are honest can easily discern the difference between envy and justifiable anger directed at cheaters and abusers.
A friendly amendment “…other peoples’ live and liberty.”
What an egotistical creep Willard is. Of course it’s all about him as usual. Why does he think that all of us ENVY him and ‘other” like him that have this deeply embedded sense of “ruling class entitlement?” I guess in his view the French were envious of the King and Queen that’s why they cut their heads off. Sorry Mitt, I’ve got news for you it’s about criminality dude not envy.
How can one not envy the hair? Or appreciate the 5 boys – nice family.
But the rest – namely Mitt – is scum, making the Obama/Mitt choice in a debate needing the broadcaster to put a D or R under who ever they wish to identify as such – since you will not be able to tell them apart by their eventual policy (although Obama will make D type promises in 2012, just as he did against Hillary and later in the 2008 general).
A $100M loser investment from the capitalist beefsteak? Dream on.
Neither aristocratic individuals’ immorality nor their cupidity alone explain their prominence. They want envy … and they get it. Y’all with the bad manners to so openly display it, well, you just don’t belong in polite company. He’s not f*cking Berlusconi; have some manners.
Get it?
The problem with our corpo-crats is that so many USans are ensnared by the Capitalist Lies when they can’t believe them themselves.
Oh, yeah, fabulous headline, Attaturk. ;-)
