Today is the day all these months of suffering will come to an end for us Iowans. It’s bad enough we cannot escape their television commercials but Mitt Romney has even invaded Hulu. Enjoy more suffering New Hampshire.
A close friend who is an academic comes to Iowa every four years to study our train wreck – which always includes as many visits to campaign rallies as we can get. Yesterday’s travel to a Paul rally demonstrated the nature of the state’s alleged retail politics as we tick down to the caucus. The Des Moines Marriott conference room held about 250 people, at least half them media. All hail glorified participatory democracy as the media reports how large the crowd was…if you count the media.
Further, we got to hear sincerely accurate statements like this:
Ron Paul dinged rival Rick Santorum Monday for being a “very liberal” candidate
We just missed a chance for the response when we arrived too late at the Santorum rally…and what a meeting to miss:
Pizza Ranch manager in Boone, Iowa, has renamed the restaurant’s chicken salad “Santorum Salad”
Thanks to Dan Savage it is not too hard to make a lot of statements about Santorum into double-entendres, but Republicans do seem to go out of their way to help, they seem to back right into them.

About Firedoglake
Think of the boon to the economy of the state, attaturk, and be grateful. It’s got lots in common with the Pony Roundup in Chincoteague, except for being only every fourth year.
One more day and then Iowans can take a long shower and wash the stench of politicians off them. Too bad the rest of us are then going to be stuck because the media has made it quite clear that they love them a long drawn out 3 ring circus.
Iowa did the other 49 states of our great Union a service by exposing these clowns as the lunatics they are. Real State of Genius, we salute you.
Here in NH we have already had months and months of the snakes, leeches and slugs circling the state, blessedly we have not had to put up with the slimy, hypocritical, Big Zero this time around.
The good news is that we have a progressive on the ballot (I do believe) and we have another name on the Dem ballot other than the present bought and paid for pig in the WH. Choices, choices.
I, like the majority of NH voters am a registered independent (unaligned, here) and have to decide do I want to show my displeasure with The Big Zero or do I want to cast my vote for one of the RWNFs to help make a bollix of their line up.
As of yesterday’s discussion in this household the two votes here will go to the Progressive.
It’s over, folks. The Duggars and their brood have hopped aboard the Santorum Bus. Rick’s gonna get a quiverful of votes outa that.
His campaign was doing robo calls here at 9pm last night. Not such a good idea for an “early to bed early to rise” state.
I wish it truly was the end! I am so goddamned sick of the Ron Paul comments going off the rails among delusional people who somehow think that antiwar + antiwar on drugs + anti woman’s right to choose + Randian economics + racism + homophobia = Progressive. So. Fucking. Sick. Of. It. We have at least until Super Tuesday though until Paul fades away.
In a party that thinks nothing is more important than gov’t control of wombs, don’t be surprised if Paul wins.
Good morning, pups. We have Brooks, Cohen, Nocera and Bruni today. Bobo’s finally gone off the deep end. In “Workers of the World, Unite!” he babbles that the largest slice of the Republican Party may have found a champion in Rick Santorum. I hope each and every one of them Googles “Santorum.” For added giggles here’s his opening sentence: “The Republican Party is the party of the white working class.” [snort] Mr. Cohen suggests “A Time to Tune Out,” and says addiction to the hand-held device is a modern curse. He may be right. I spent part of Sunday watching the tenor across from me in the choir texting or twitter-twatting during the sermon… Mr. Nocera, in “The Central Falls Success,” says in one of Rhode Island’s poorer cities, a reading experiment flourishes. Mr. Bruni looks at “Mitt, The Paisley Tiger,” and says Mitt Romney likes to use the song “Eye of the Tiger” at his campaign events. But “Karma Chameleon” might be a better tune for him.
Here they are.
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got apple cranberry muffins this morning. I don’t know about where you are, but here the weather has gone completely off the rails. On Sunday it was around 70 and this morning it’s 30. The forecast is that it’ll be in the 70s again over the weekend. It’s just nuts. Have a great day.
Thanks, Marion. Seems like the Santorum surge is like the earlier ones for other candidates, all about the unknown far exceeding expectations via the revealed words of the surging prospect.
Republican Party may have found a champion in Rick Santorum.
Premature evaluation
Promising; my local news here in flyover N.TX. telling us that the Occupy demonstrators at the Parade of Roses are ‘protesting economic inequity’. Wow, their ticker had some actual intelligence behind its sendouts.
Which is why I said that we have at least until Super Tuesday of non Paul supporters being accused of being “steeped in the blood of brown people” and so forth. Until we are no longer accused twenty fucking seven times a day of being reflexive Obama supporters. The conversation doesn’t have to include Ron Paul in order to talk about US elective wars. Ron Paul doesn’t have to be a candidate for me to talk seriously about the surveillance state we now live in. All the Ron Paul trolls have is how abominable Obama is, they have no actual defense of the man himself.
And I’m flagging everything I see from Ron Paul supporters when they accuse the rest of us of being murderers just because we won’t vote for him until either those trolls are banned from FDL or I am. At this point, I begin to wonder why I’m still hanging around. Freedom of expression and tolerance of alternate viewpoints are wonderful things but I’m tired of being accused of being a butcher and/or an Obamabot just because I see Ron Paul for what he is. Just because they’ll squeal if they get a leash put on them is no reason they shouldn’t have to follow the same rules as the rest of us.
It will never end. The clown car will just drive down the road to the next carnival.
Boxturtle (I like the carny image. That makes Fox the Carny Barker)
Yeah, I think the media boom is the only reason Iowa still puts up with this. Every cheap motel is filled for at least a month. And i’m sure that the fast food places also do well.
Boxturtle (More media than voters may be the story of this election)
IMO they exposed themselves as fools, Iowa simply provided a venue.
Boxturtle (Nobody in Iowa gave the Chinese nukes to make someone look foolish)
Agreed, am however staying away from the Paul wars, it’s about as productive as pointing out that right wing economic policy has brought on the disaster we’ve achieved, so it would be insane to vote them back into power. Rational thought is not involved in a choice to vote for wingnut candidates.
Good Morning all,
Willard, A Santorum or Dr Paul representing the republican best.
Maybe this self nomination process isn’t such a good idea in a Democracy. Look at me I’m the best money magnet.
Which one would we want to wake up for that three o’clock in the morning call ?
Thank you, Marion.
Heh, I find the Paul worshippers fairly similar to what I saw from Obama supporters in 2008.
It is absolutely amazing to me that people who say that support Medicare Social Security, and single payer would believe that a guy who has claimed Social Security and Medicare are unconstitutional multiple times is going to go out of his way to keep it safe. And don’t even get me started how ANYONE with half a brain gets the idea that 50 different state health care programs is anything or in any way going to lead to single payer. Delusional doesn’t even begin to cover that particular thought process.
When you have conversations with Paulites they don’t even seem to understand what Paul has actually said and done on issues or to have any answer other than “he’ll end the wars.”(Hmmmmmmmmmmm why does THAT particular refrain sound oh so familiar. Oh that’s right Obama supporters thought HE’D end the wars).
It seems there is a portion of the progressive population addicted to worshipping political figures. Sad.
The big thing coming to an end is not the Iowa Caucuses but Our Right to a trial with Obama’s signing of the NDAA.

I can’t get over this though it was expected, of course.
?!? He considers banksters and stockbrokers working class? And he should be aware there are BLACK banksters and stockbrokers, I guess they’re Democrats.
Boxturtle (Code, Rick. Remember to speak in the code)
Spot on. And people who remember me know that I stayed away from that particular fray after a while because the Obama supporters liked to reflexively call people “racist”. Save me from true believers!
Ditto. Some Paul supporters are WAY out there, moreso than any other GOPer’s supporters. Paul has some good positions, but he needs to get a grip on reality for some of his other positions. Or perhaps he just needs a course in basic math.
Boxturtle (One day I’m called an Obamabot, the next day I’m a firebagger. *sigh*)
Bobo considers criminals to fit his idea of ‘working class’. From this concept, follows winger policy enabling crime.
Predictions:
1. Someone will win the Iowa caucus.
2. There will be a movement within both parties to end Iowa’s first-in-the-nation status.
3. Iowa will lead off again in 2016.
It’s as though the people who run this country have read a best practices manual for choosing a president and done exactly the opposite.
“a leash put on them” instantly brought this to my mind.

Well, at least criminals got steady employment in todays economy. I’d love to see Bobo come up with a defination of criminal that includes the folks he thinks are crooks, but doesn’t include banksters.
Boxturtle (Let’s see if he can do it without mentioning race or skin color)
‘One day I’m called an Obamabot, the next day I’m a firebagger’
if anyone calls you Fair and Balanced, take a hostage.
Heh
But I’d argue that having to sift through 20 Ron Paul youtube diaries a day fits the definition of torture as well. ;)
Bobo, along with Paul Ryan and Newt Gingrich, is what the right wing passes off as an intellectual. A solid majority of the people who post here are smarter than all three of those guys.
All three put together.
Toss it, baby!
For those of you who think humans haven’t progressed in the last ten thousand years, and that blogs can be proof of the proposition, check out this thread.
What world do we live in? Gag….
Quoting Charlie Pierce:
I’d ask them to define “fair and balanced” and explain how Fox meets that defination.
Boxturtle (Fox keeps using that phrase. I do not think it means what they think it means)
A better one than any time when we couldn’t express thoughts however discordant or offensive, I do believe.
We live in either the world we build or the world we ALLOWED to be built. Either way, it’s ours to fix. Or FUBAR.
Boxturtle (Yeah, I hate sucking that down too)
You can’t watch Faux News and think they mean to tell the truth in any way, much less to mean it.
Also liked this:
“There’s a trick in the horse industry that we learned before we had sedatives that, if you grab a horse by the lip, and squeeze it, he forgets about anything else. It’s called ‘twitching.’”
Has many political applications.
Perhaps….Yet there is such a thing as “pollution”, imho. There certainly is some image/language that I wish I had never heard…..
Didn’t mean at all to diss blogs. Just that the conversations we have on them often mirror those in caves shortly after language was invented.
Agree, and have that kind of reaction to porn, but support free speech even when I’d rather have it shut off, for my taste.
Maybe the turkey sandwich or the baloney would have been better fits. But no subs,he’s no hero.
