List of Active Occupy Encampments Across the Country – Now at 61

By: Jane Hamsher Tuesday December 20, 2011 1:15 pm

So we thought we’d try to drive a stake through the heart of the “Occupy is Dead” narrative by publishing our working list, which is consistently more up-to-date than any I’ve seen. These are occupations with encampments only — there are many, many more vibrant occupations that are doing tremendous community activism despite the lack of an encampment.

Occupy Atlanta Saves Woman’s Home From Foreclosure

By: David Dayen Tuesday December 20, 2011 12:40 pm

Now here’s one of those tanigble victories for the Occupy movement. In Atlanta, protesters saved the house of an Iraq war veteran from foreclosure. There are thousands of potential stories just like Brigitte Walker’s, and thousands of potential activists ready to act on the situations. It’s time to get to work.

This Congress Is the Least Popular Congress Ever

By: Jon Walker Tuesday December 20, 2011 12:00 pm

Just when it seemed almost mathematically impossible for Congress to get any more unpopular, it manages to sink again to an incredible new low. Congress’s job approval rating is the lowest it has ever been since Gallup started asking the question back in 1974.

House Rejects Senate Payroll Tax Deal

By: David Dayen Tuesday December 20, 2011 11:30 am

The House of Representatives officially rejected the bipartisan agreement that passed the Senate for a two-month extension of the payroll tax cut, extended unemployment benefits and a doctor’s fix to prevent a 27% reduction in Medicare reimbursement rates. They did so under a complicated scheme whereby members did not vote on the Senate deal itself, with the rejection of the Senate deal implicit in the exchange.

Chuck Norris – The Fraud Who Won’t Stand Up to Real Injustice

By: Alvin McEwen Tuesday December 20, 2011 11:00 am

Chuck Norris is an action movie star. But he should stay that way. His forays into politics reveal his basic ignorance. He has penned a piece for the American Family Association whining about how the Obama Administration has declared war on religion, and his claims are false.

Politifact Disgraces Themselves with “Lie of the Year” Award

By: David Dayen Tuesday December 20, 2011 10:15 am

Politifact just told a whopper. It declared as a “lie” the fact that Paul Ryan’s proposal to transform Medicare from a government guaranteed benefit program to a voucher for private insurance that doesn’t guarantee benefits would not end Medicare. Politifact should have given the “lie of the year” award to itself.

By: Jon Walker Tuesday December 20, 2011 9:40 am

Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney are tied nationally at 30 percent each according to the latest Washington Post-ABC News poll. Ron Paul is at 15 percent and all other candidate are currently in the single digits. And Romney has now reached 30%.

House Republicans Find Smarmiest Way Possible to Reject Payroll Tax Deal

By: David Dayen Tuesday December 20, 2011 9:00 am

The procedural wizards in the House Republican caucus stayed up late last night to concoct this scheme, a way to dispose of the Senate’s payroll tax deal by voting affirmatively. They think this helps insulate their members from charges of rejecting the deal, and causing a tax increase of on average $1,000 a year. Here’s how it’ll go down.

By: David Dayen Tuesday December 20, 2011 8:20 am

Wisconsin may have to add another recall. One of the Republican-appointed judges on the Wisconsin Supreme Court, an elected position that is subject to recall, has been caught in a major scandal, ruling on cases represented by the same law firm that provided him free legal services.
