And a very pleasant good evening to everyone! I hope everyone is cozily ensconced with your combination “bunny slippers and tuxedo pjs’ accessorized with a glass of whatever you like that is bubbly and something yummy. Tonight’s topic?
Wherever this goes, but first on the table is “movies that feature New Year’s Eve.” My obvious choice (because I like to dance) is the above item, “Holiday Inn” from 1942 (which you could tell in any case not only because of the costuming but also from the hyper-patriotic Bing Crosby number with the military planes toward the end). Now, the studio actually got a two-fer out of their investment on this because a) they redid it in 1954 as “White Christmas” and got to use the musical number “White Christmas” again, b) they got to use Bing Crosby again, and c) they got to use the Holiday Inn set again (in “Holiday Inn” the set was Bing Crosby’s supper club in Connecticut; in “White Christmas”, the same set was the Pine Tree Inn set in Vermont, owned by Dean Jagger’s character).
Fred Astaire was the original first choice to partner with Bing Crosby in “White Christmas” but he’d ‘retired’ so they redid the role for Donald O’Conner, who had to withdraw due to illness. So they redid the role AGAIN for Danny Kaye. Now, in terms of creativity, “Holiday Inn” IMHO, has much more breadth (because they literally worked every holiday they could think of complete with animated calendars); it also is a creature of its time and includes such set-pieces as having the female co-star Marjorie Reynolds (she’s the woman dancing with Astaire in the above clip) dressed up in blackface for the special song for Lincoln’s birthday. In the case of the New Year’s Eve dance(which unfortunately, I can’t put the clip up of from youtube.com, but if you go there and search on ‘holiday inn drunk dance’ you will find it and it is a delightful example of Fred Astaire’s artistry), it is said that Astaire girded himself for the first take with 2 shots of bourbon and added a shot for every additional take. What you are seeing is the 7th and last take. Obviously no one took his blood alcohol levels at that point.
In terms of refreshments at Chez Siberia (we are not entertaining a crowd here; New Year’s Eve at our house consists of movies and lots and lots of food), we’ve got laid out: meatballs, artichoke dip, home make French bread, oven bbq chicken thighs, a fruit, veggie and cheese plate, and punch, with a Finger Lakes bubbly (we drink local) for the toast.
So – the floor is open. Your favorite New Year’s Eve movie? And ‘whatcha’ got to eat?

About Firedoglake
Well, we DID have a clip of Fred Astaire in the famous New Year’s Eve Drunk Dance but it seems to have disappeared. If you want to see it, go to youtube.com and search on ‘holiday inn drunk dance’ – there are actually a couple of versions of it…both black and white and colorized.
Happy New Year Toby!
Drunk Dancing – can’t argue with that!
And…we’ve got the trailer with the fire cracker dance and Bing Crosby in the strangest Uncle Sam outfit ever (and, I’m embarrassed to say, the cheesy blackface number as well…sorry). Actually, a little known fact about the fire cracker dance is that the shoes from that were used to raise money for War Bonds and brought in $116,000 in the auction.
*heh* Hau’oli Makahiki Hou, again Toby…! *g*
We’re drinking spumante from Goose Watch vineyards, which is on Cayuga Lake in Upstate NY (we drink local…)in a place called Romulus, NY, which formerly was famous (notorious) for being the home of the Seneca Army Depot and of the only known herd of albino deer (if they have white tails, obviously no one knows about them…).
Hey, CT – welcome. So, what is your fav New Year’s Eve movie? I’m armed with a few others …
…New Year’s Eve at our house consists of movies and lots and lots of food…
Does some Pizza Hut delivery and all 4 Doctor Dolittle dvd’s rate about the same, Aunty Toby…? ;-)
home made French bread????? Yum. I’m coming to your house!!!
We’re watching a Twilight Zone marathon on the SciFi channel.
Hey, CT, it’s all good. I just have rabid, aggressive, competitive cooks at Chez Siberia, with very sharp elbows, who stake out territory along the kitchen counters and demand their share of the utensils and so on. If someone suggested pizza delivery, they’d be voted down…and loudly. As for the movies, I got my vote in to watch Hidalgo. I figure any film that combines Viggo Mortensen, horses, a race, and Omar Sharif is a winner. At the moment, they rest of the crowd is watching foreign intrigue with lots of things being blown up… at least that is what it sounds like.
g’evening, Toby & Pups!
The g-unit and Daughter and her Boyfriend watched Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I couldn’t hack it so i stole some of the yummy crackers and cheeses and went upstairs to read. Now the g-unit is bouncing off the walls and giddy with excitement that he will stay up til midnight! Daughter and Boyfriend are enjoying pomegranate mojitos while the g-unit and i are enjoying sparkling pear juice.
mmmm pizza
I spent the day resisting the urge to splurge
Little Momma just announced that she is going to bed. Earlier she was singing, “My hat it has 4 (?) corners,” and suggested (when I asked her, “Where is that hat, Momma?”) perhaps it was somewhere in “the dim past.”
I have a cold, have not felt well at all, so I am fortified with one of the commercial pain relievers, vit. C, and a blanket on the floor. So I may not make it much longer tonight, just doing the TV thing.
do do doo-doo, do do doo-doo
…with very sharp elbows, who stake out territory along the kitchen counters and demand their share of the utensils and so on.
Sounds pretty gruesome, M’dear…! ;-)
HNY NDFG
Hey – MM – welcome. The French bread is courtesy of the DH, who also put in his bid to make the artichoke dip. His recipe comes courtesy of “Beard on Bread” and is actually quite simple.
French Style Bread
1 1/2 packages active dry yeast (a pkg. = 1 tbsp. You do the math)
1 Tbl sugar
2 cups warm water
5-6 cups all purpose or hard wheat flour
3 Tbl yello corn meal
1 egg white, whipped up with a bit of cold water.
Combine the yeast with the sugar and warm water in a large bowl and allow to proof. Add the flour to the yeast mixture until you have a still dough. Remove to a lightly floured board and knead until no longer sticky.
Place in a greased bowl and turn.
Cover and let rise until doubled – about an hour.
Punch down the dough and shape into two long loaves.
Sprinkle baking sheet with cornmeal and put the loaves on it. Slash the tops diagonally. Brush the tops with the egg wash.
Place in a COLD oven, and set the temp to 400 degrees F.
Bake 35 minutes or until well browned and hollow sounding when you rap them.
Done.
Here’s the drunk dancin’

not that there’s anything wrong with that.
…resisting the urge to splurge…
So did I, but, I got totally out-voted, 2 outta 3…! So I must indeed suffer through some Pizza Hut pizza…! *g*
((((brgrothus))) with some lemon tea and sympathy
That sounds like a song I learned many moons ago that is about Haman’s hat – “my hat, it has three corners…” which is actually the descriptor of hamantaschen, which is a three cornered pastry that is eaten on Purim, filled with everything from prunes to poppy seeds…
Mine!…. No, Mine!!!
I love a NY pizza but that little pizzeria doesn’t deliver.
I think Marjorie Reynolds stands up pretty well to his style in that dance, actually.
Dr Dick and Evil Dr Puma must have dates this evening.
Aloha, ndfg…! I was so stoked when my g-unit lit up like a Xmas tree when he’d spotted me earlier today…! ;-)
she apparently has the advantage of sobriety
We had a visit from our grandson tonight too – I think I would be able to hear those squeals even if I’d turn off my hearing aids.
Happy New Year to all and may you enjoy Gulf War III: Iran, as much as you enjoyed the last 2!
http://www.presstv.ir/detail/218715.html
Nope, just arriving…Happy New Year, everyone!
Oh, I did not know that. Great. I’m sure I can’t explain it to LM, who has been having this song on her mind for a couple of weeks now. Def from the waay back, dim past, as she called it.
And, hot water lemon and honey sounds awfully good, Elliott. I may try to rustle some of that up, there might be some liquor around here that would go along, but I think I’ll skip it and hit the hay early.
HNY, Elliott!
another fav movie which features New Year’s eve (and probably the funniest deli scene ever written) is “When Harry Met Sally”. For anyone who is still in mourning for big hair and shoulder pads, this is the movie for you.
*heh* My local FM station just announced DUI checkpoints and that AAA has set up free rides…! That’s true Community Broadcasting…!
{{{ bg }}} hope you feel better soonest!
Aloha, EDP…! Always a pleasure…! ;-)
One of our local law firms has set up shuttle service as well. I wonder if the drivers are younger legal staffers trolling for business…
aloha! that is a wonderful feeling, isn’t it! those g-units catch on fast! And they’re the best little buddies ever.
Greetings from occasionally-sunny Iowa, where we get more calls from idiot candidates before 9 AM than most states get all day!
*heh* Ain’t it totally kewl…? ;-)
Happy New Year to everyone. I’ll never make it until midnight but wanted to say that FDL has had a very special year. Hope ’12 is even better. ‘Night all….see you tomorrow.
MM — Twilight Zone marathon: did you know that Rod Serling was from right here where I live (Binghamton, NY) and he always said, when someone would ask him where the twilight zone was, that it was Binghamton. The local high school holds a young people’s film festival in his honor.
*ouch* My Condolences, Doc…! At least, it’ll be all over in a couple of daze…! ;-)
Well, the best part is that we get to play with him and then his parents get to try to take him home and calm him down so that he will go to sleep.
nighty night. Best wishes.
Happy New Year’s, Twain…! *g*
True. They’ll pretty much ignore us during the general.
oh man! nothin’ like being loved by the wee ones.
OK — anyone with any experience making kimchi? That’s one of my goals for 2012.
That is most certainly the best part of ‘em…! One of which, I fully intend to abuse…! ;-)
Happy New Year! sweet dreams
What do you have as materials for kimchi…? I do know my kimchi, M’dear…! ;-)
All I know is crushed red peppers, shredded napa cabbage, a bit of salt and sugar. Yes? no?
You also need vinegar, plenty of garlic, and, I’m not sure what ‘napa’ cabbage is, but, Won Bok is the preferred cabbage…!
Happy New Year, Sir
any drunk typing checkpoints?
Happy New Year Twain!!
vinegar: no problem.
Garlic: do you have any idea how much garlic came out of my garden this year?
Won Bok is what we call napa cabbage around here (versus bok choy and a bunch of other varieties; I think I’ll be able to grow it here since anything else from the cabbage family seems to do pretty well, but I’ll have to get seeds soon so that I can get them started to be ready to go into the ground early).
I was told, by someone from the area, that he would go out on overnights with boy scouts and tell stories around the campfire – Can you imagine!!
*heh* No probs…! I passed ‘em all with flying colors…! *hic* ;-)
well, I have the feeling that no one would sleep that night.
Kewl, I can send ya some great recipes…! In Korea, they bury their batches in doubled-up black bags, for six months at a time…! It’s some seriously ripe kimchi, let me tell you…! ;-)
11:59! (ET)
especially being out in the woods at night with a guy armed with something called ‘How to Serve Man”.
*HAPPY NEW YEAR!!.!!*
Happy New Year!!! (well, that is for those of us on the EST)
Happy New Year’s to all you Righties…! *g*
OK, folks – I’m off for the night – thanks so much.
Ooh, Holiday Inn! Love that clip…I want Marjorie’s dress, and, and…her dancing shoes…and most of all, I want her hairdo, with the glittery hair ornament along the back of it. That was glamor, baby!
Haven’t seen HI in years; I used to like it better than White Christmas – remember watching it with friends years ago – but ex-hubby hated Holiday Inn, so it was White Christmas alone every year. Often with another couple, so it did get to be tradition.
Happy New Year to you East Coasters! Have another hour to go here…watching local news/NYE show of “Celebration San Antonio” from downtown with sound off. I believe there will be fireworks this year. Last year, both New Year’s and then 4th of July fireworks were cancelled, even the official ones, because the fire danger was so high. Now we’ve had three weeks of rain and drizzle, so the fireworks are back.
Sweet dreams and HNY, Toby…! *g*
Thanks!!!
One of our Christmas traditions is stollen. Actually haven’t made this year’s batch yet. Probably tomorrow.
I’ll keep your recipe & try it.
aunt toby! hippo gnu deer!
thank you Toby!
Happy New Year!
I, too, will drift away, now that the year is safely arrived
Good night, Toby, Elliott! Sorry to lose you so early.
Guess playing with the g-units has worn out our hostess.
Now, we just have to tuff it out til the next one…! Sweet dreams, Ellie…! *g*
Just found the Twilight Zone marathon -couldn’t remember what channel was Syfy. It was prescient, some ways – climate change. Earth changes its orbit somehow, and starts moving away from the sun, so they’re on the way to freezing to death.
I don’t remember that one. (of course, my mother didn’t allow me to watch them first-run, but I’ve seen plenty in reruns).
Evening all! Late to the lake. Here is hoping after the election Nancy Pelosi can tell the Teabaggers “Now turn your head to the left and cough.”
They were showing old Dukes of Hazzard episodes in the Lucky Star Lounge. The food and the music were pretty good. It was a nice way to end 2011. Happy New Year, Firepups!
tj – your mama wouldn’t let you watch Twilight Zone? My mother couldn’t *make* me watch it — too scary for me! When my parents would watch Alfred Hitchcock I would climb up on the window sill behind my bedroom curtain and howl until they turned it off. And that was just at the theme music. It must have been awful to be my parents.
ofg — hiya! you writing that fracking diary? Its happening here, they are doing coal too, not just nat gas, and that is much closer to the surface. Yuck. Adding bad on bad.
Twilight Zone marathon (natch), and at 0001, “Dr. Strangelove.”
To tune our minds for the year to come.
Aloha, OFG…! So where does the wide open road have ya tonite…? *g*
“Dr. Strangelove.”
Yee-haw…! ;-)
Too funny! I wonder if I was older for Hitchcock – I don’t remember that being forbidden, and I knew the theme well. It was even part of our “Music Memory Contest”, partly because it was so familiar.
That’s Gounod’s Funeral March for a Marionette — pretty creepy thought in itself. Here is the version w Alfred walking into the outline drawing, which, I am told, he drew himself. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8b79nipHXAg&feature=related
I was up on the widowsill before “good evening”
*heh* Wuss…! However, I refuse to watch all those ‘new’ slasher thrillas…! Not a fan, whatsoever, of the grotesque graphic imagery these days…! 8-(
Funny. I’d forgotten the composer…I was, after all, in grade school at the time.
Where are you, that fracking is going on, plus coal exploration?
For music memories, and this will surely date me, I recall:
Robin Hood (the old BBC version with Richard Greene) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2w7ALMIUy74
The Lone Ranger http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDedUcmvgL8&feature=related
youtube
I was in the Detroit area and we loved Jingles in Boofland, but I can’t find anything on Youtube for it. You’ll live .. : )
Yeah, me either. I guess that figures, huh? I think the censorship all began when I went to see “The Incredible Shrinking Man” with a friend, around age 6 or 7.
Nightmares ensued, followed closely by the decree, “no more sci-fi or horror movies!”
Oh.mi.gawd. “Robin Hood, Robin Hood, riding through the glen! Robin Hood, Robin Hood, with his band of men!”
Whew. I had forgotten the theme, let alone the words, but found myself singing along as soon as it began to play…well, not the most complex lyrics, hmm? I sure hadn’t forgotten the series; it was one of my favorites. And of course, The Lone Ranger! Sigh.
Don’t worry about dating yourself at LLN. ctuttle is a young’un, but the rest of the regulars are in your age group or not too much younger. I certainly am, obviously.
I’m in Toronto, we have lots of nat gas fracking here, plus uranium mining. Alberta (home of the Tar sands) has lots of fracking, too, and in British Columbia they are fracking for coal. recent article good summary here: http://www.truth-out.org/canadas-become-home-record-fracking/1325175061
Yes, that blew me away as well!!
Ctuttle, absolutely! I am a *total* wuss wrt movies still, even at my advanced age. I have not seen any of the Predator or Alien movies, although my nephews were raised on them. Mr HotFlash checks all of the movies first and lets me know if they are OK. And then I have to watch them on small screen and with a finger on the ‘pause’ button. I walked out of the last movie I actually saw in a theater — it was King Kong, and I only made it to the scene in the village, that would have been maybe 10 or 15 minutes in. OTOH, I save a lot of $$$
I am no good with Hollywood scary stuff. But I am actually pretty good in real life emergencies — go figure.
Ah, Toronto (to Hot Flash), so you just moved across the river, huh?
I’ve just drunk my toast to the New Year, having heard the fireworks notifying me of its arrival. Couldn’t muster the interest to go outside and look. Sad, huh?
I found a little bottle of Prosecco in the back of the fridge; I drink booze of any kind so seldom, it took me five minutes to get the durn bottle open. Then I had to find and wash my one not-packed-away wine glass to drink it from.
It isn’t bad, actually.
I’m blowing off the black-eyed peas for luck this year…they haven’t worked for a long time. ;) Maybe the Prosecco will…
Hey, Mauimom, how are you? Several more hours till New Year’s hits for you and ctuttle, hmmm? Lovely weather, as usual, I presume?
After the Thin Man is my favorite.
fading fast here, but just wanted to leave you with this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uc4yoIwGqOc
