Two stories as reported by both The Guardian and Al-Jazeera:
- “A suicide attack killed five people at the interior ministry in Baghdad as a key political bloc called for early elections in a worsening standoff that has stoked sectarian tensions. The blast, which left dozens wounded on Monday, came just days after the capital was struck by its deadliest violence in more than four months. The parliamentary coailtion loyal to anti-US Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr said it backed the dissolution of parliament and early elections in a dispute that has seen Iraq’s Sunni vice president accused of running a death squad and a deputy prime minister call the government a ‘dictatorship’.”
- “At least six people have been killed in a suicide car bomb attack on Iraq’s interior ministry, the latest since a crisis erupted between the country’s Shia-led government and Sunni leaders a week ago. The prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, a Shia, ordered the arrest of the vice-president, a Sunni, last Monday and asked parliament to fire his deputy, a move that threatens a new wave of sectarian strife just after the withdrawal of the last US troops.”
(nobody could have predicted, right?) and
- “Iran has suspended the punishment of death by stoning for a woman convicted of adultery, the country’s foreign ministry said. A spokesman for the ministry said on Wednesday that government officials will review the case of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, who was convicted of adultery in 2006.”
- “An Iranian woman whose sentence of death by stoning for adultery provoked an international outcry could be executed by hanging instead, the country’s judicial authorities have indicated. Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, a 44-year-old mother of two, was convicted of conducting an “illicit relationship outside marriage” in 2006 and has since been kept in Tabriz prison in the west of Iran.”
Barbaric, yeah, that’s about right. Right up there with shooting, hanging, gassing, beheading and myriad other ways we’ve devised to do away with our brothers and sisters.
- From Real News: “Israeli Tree Campaign ‘Judaizes’ Expropriated Land. Jewish National Fund’s practice of selling and leasing land exclusively to Jewish owners is met with growing opposition.”
- “Brazil has overtaken the UK as the world’s sixth largest economy, an economic research group has said. The Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) said its latest World Economic League Table showed Asian countries moving up and European countries falling back.”
- “China and Japan have unveiled plans to promote direct exchange of their currencies in a bid to cut costs for companies and boost bilateral trade. The deal will allow firms to convert the Chinese and Japanese currencies directly into each other.”
RSA Animate – Crises of Capitalism “In this RSA Animate, renowned academic David Harvey asks if it is time to look beyond capitalism towards a new social order that would allow us to live within a system that really could be responsible, just, and humane?”
The truth will set you free but first it will piss you off.

One double sticky bun, please.
Good Morning, SD.
So, who’s got the air plane tickets to Brazil?
(I’ll try to be good this morning. Can’t promise, but I’ll try.)
So what’s new? In the Inca Museum in Cuzco, Peru is a hand-drawn graphic dating from the Spanish Inquisition. The story below suggests the Inca chief was hung instead of being burned alive; the graphic shows Atahualpa being stabbed to death by the priest.
Good morning all.
Good morning and thanks for the post and host SD.
Good morning Diners.
Good Morning Demi, SD and Everyone.
Those buns appear a bit sticky for my tastes. How about a couple of farm fresh eggs, over easy, whole wheat toast, please.
Mornin’, pups
How about a nice slice of VA hickory smoked ham or half a dozen rashers to go with that.
Yes, please.
(I’ll just put my bun in my pocket for later.)
Thanks, SD, what a surprise, after years under our occupation that produced such violence that whole neighborhoods were suddenly emptied of one faction or the other, the government spackled together with both erupts into feuding. For this we destroyed our own economy. The House of Saud sails smoothly on.
And the Ship of Fools is none the wiser.
Would you like a baggie for that?
16th century propaganda changed the murder from stabbing to strangulation; 21st century propaganda transformed the terrorists from the Carlyle Group to a group of 19 camel jockeys.
Oh, and by the way, guess who bought a garlic press yesterday? I never had one before.
1 & 2) I think Iraq is going to simply melt down. The Shia are in charge, they remember the times when the Sunni’s were in charge and they’re NOT going back there. The Sunni’s are being crushed, but they’re a large enough segment of the polulation that they can and are striking back. I wonder if this is Obama’s back door method of getting the troops he wanted in Iraq. We have to go back in to stop the civilian crisis that the strife is causing. Without it seeming like we have to go help out in the civilian crisis our drones are causing.
3 & 4) Not sure that being stoned to death is any less merciful than electrocution and it’s sure not as bad as gas. We should maybe keep our mouths shut about Iran killing it’s citizens as long as we’re killing ours.
I’d love to see how Japan and china are going to do direct exchange without China “de-manipulating” their currency. At least as far as Japan is concerned.
Boxturtle (ya notice how nobody talks about Fukushima anymore? Guess evyerthing is just fine…)
Yes, thank you. Nice of you to care about my pockets. :)
We got the Oil, right? RIGHT???? Please tell me we got the oil, otherwise the entire war is wasted.
Boxturtle (I read your post and the first thought was “Somebody needs to b***hslab Bush)
Just imagine what Ashtiani’s sentence would be if she were a priest caught porking a 10-year-old tyke.
I have one but use a knife instead. Easier.
Oh, you’re going all biblical with the One without sin casting the first stone?
Still, as bad as stoning is, it’s quicker than starvation, which is our murder du jour, isn’t it? And, no, I’m not without sin, but I’m just saying.
Good morning, everyone.
I’m gonna pass on the sticky buns too. Prolly back on a (modified) South Beach for a couple of weeks. Jeans are getting tight in the waist, undoubtedly from my chocolate chip cookie research. LOL.
A Facebook friend posted some drivel from Peggy Noonan yesterday about an Iraki who loves us. I commented that the Irakis hate us, with plenty of good reason. A visit here to a couple of threads where Gorillas Guides folks have posted would be an eye-opener for these conservanuts.
Just thinking about keeping my bum from expanding. I was doing a sort of squat lift, rowing motion with 50 lbs, 20 reps, just before stopping in at the diner. Working on the tummy, and leg and back strength. Preventive medicine.
I used one for many years. I’ve found the chopped garlic packed in olive oil works as well as fresh garlic and it’s ready to go. I Haven’t used the press since I found those lovely little jars.
Boxturtle (For once, the lazy way works as well as the hardwork way)
I had to go buy a garlic press when I was making something at my (gourmet cook) daughter-in-law’s house. She’s never had one and I suspect has not used the one I bought.
Is it? I bought two new knives as well. And, two lids for pans we had without.
I’ll try the press, just for fun. Since we already bought it.
It was really fun going to Smart & Final and saying One of those, and one of those…
The nuclear industry can’t have all the bad PR affecting their push for more nuclear disaster here. We’re already not-so-slowly poisoning our air, water and soil. Radioactivity is much quicker.
Send a mailing address and I’ll send a sample or two.
Naw. I am (on occasion) an a**hole. This does not stop me from (on occasion) throwing “rocks” at other a**holes.
I suppose this makes me (on occasion) a hypocrite.
Boxturtle (this will not stop me from (on occasion) throwing rocks at other hypocrites)
:(
Sleep well in your own bed last night. Glad you had fun, and glad you’re home again.
(Did you get the photos?)
That editorial cartoon reminds me of a couple of posts I’ve seen (one I think from FDL) about the Pope in his gold-encrusted finery lecturing his people about “the superficial glitter” of Christmas.
None of the 1% “leadership” have a clue.
You don’t have to ask me twice.
Sending it now. Thanks!
Funny you should mention that. I got a Christmas card from my devout Catholic parents whom I have not spoken to in 10 years. It has a check in it. I have decided to donate it to a group working toward the prosecution of pedophile priests. In their name of course. I will sent them the acknowledgement. Perhaps they will understand I have no interest in their money or their deeply flawed ideology.
Smarter than Congress.
I read yesterday (can’t remember where) about the difference between the level of public interest and the coverage of an event in the media. Might have been over at Salon.
Fukushima was mentioned as one of those events — something like 50+% interest vs 17% media coverage. No wonder our populace is so ill informed.
What bad PR?!? The article in the local paper about the new reactor approvals didn’t even mention Japan, not even to assure us that this was a “New design” and “tsunami proof”.
3% of their country at least is contaminated. And that 3% number is the most favorable number they could come up with, they only counted what they HAD to admit. And they’re still aren’t letting independent investigators sample the ocean within their waters.
Boxturtle (I think it’s time for Japan’s PM to go swimming to prove it’s safe)
oooooooo
Good morning, Firepups. Is it 2012 yet?
When I had a garlic press, I needed a garlic press brush to clean it. Now I use a knife, but I also have a mushroom brush and slicer I need to give to some one who will actually use ithem. Trying to cut back on getting things that seem great – that I will never take out of the package, even.
Wow. That’s the way to do it.
(Do you ever miss them?)
I might have guess that you read that comic as well. I read it every day, carefully making sure I am not drinking anything when I do so.
Boxturtle (Check out Get Fuzzy on that site as well)
Continuing battle here in FL over the “new design” reactor Progress Energy wants to build in southern FL. We’ve been paying for the fuckin’ thing for 2 years and it’s not approved yet.
Stocking stuffer from daughter, usefulness reviews not yet in from my test kitchen, but what a thoughtful young adult to get something for her dad.
What’s the rush? Got a heavy date?
Pardon me for nosiness, but maybe it’s worth a try at renewing contact, they might have loosened up, which they might be trying to attempt.
*bows*
You are the wind beneath my wings.
Boxturtle (be sure to send them the receipt, so they can deduct it from their taxes)
Good morning, pupses, and thank you SD for the good reading and coffee.
The garlic implement that I love is the little flexible tube that takes the skin off the cloves.
What is Smart & Final? Sounds interesting.
I have a jar of Penzey’s minced garlic. Freeze dried, maybe, but reconstitutes almost instantly, and I use it when I’m feeling lazy. And once you order from Penzey’s you get catalogs with recipes. I don’t like getting catalogs, but I usually flip through this one to look at the recipes, and they often have coupons for free spices.
Could be worse. It could have been approved and under construction.
Boxturtle (or worse, fueling up and ready to go)
Maybe solar technology will overtake them before they can get it in place.
Yup, I got them, and replied. Sonny looks like a delightful kid!
No. They are not nice people. It was Ok for them to be not nice to me but not OK to be not nice to CBL and our children, their grandchildren.
my thought exactly
*waves hand in air* Me too??
And FYI as soon as things settle down I’m starting the sourdough bread project!
Yep. That is a definite line that they crossed.
I’m sorry.
I use a chef’s knife. Smash the garlic with the heel of my hand then chop it up.
No, they’re just trying to not feel so guilty.
“Pockets? Who’s got pockets?” (old joke that all the men are smiling at right now if they remember it)
Glad we are back to Marxian theory this morning with David Harvey. Are the RSA Animates something that he does routinely?
It’s a warehouse with big box grocery items plus restaurant supplies.
I don’t remember that one.
That looks VERY cool! Did you see the video of how to peel garlic in 10 seconds? It was from one of those famous chefs, and he peeled a head of garlic by smashing the head to break apart the cloves, and then shaking it for ten seconds in bowls put together. I’ve tried it a clove or two at a time just in fitted together custard cups, and it really works! If you’re interested I’ll try to dig up the link.
I lay the blade flat on the garlic, smack it and then drag the cutting across it. Beautifully pulverized. Every time.
I’m with you on the knife, easy to smash, chop, scoop it up, and then wipe clean, but I also got one of these in my stocking and it works great, rinses clean.
A soft rubber tube, place a couple cloves inside and roll with the palm of your hand.
Saw above that they were rotten to your family, sorry that went on. I was raised in warring family, always wanted to get together and never did, so it always makes me sad when I see family alienated.
Dunno. I think this is the 2nd one I’ve seen.
My daughter-in-law’s mother is sorta like that, I think. She refused to come to her wedding to my son, because it wasn’t “convenient.” And she’s seldom seen the 3 grandchildren, and they have no relationship with her. I am already more of a grandma to those kids than she is.
That’s what I use, too. So easy and quick.
I used to do it that way too. Just eliminated the flat blade part.
I’m so sorry. That’s the worst.
You know that I avoid my family and my mister’s too.
I’d love one of those here. But we can’t even get Costco.
Will do.
Breakfast is over here, a couple of chores and and then out to the office.
A pleasant and fruitful day to all.
•“An Iranian woman whose sentence of death by stoning for adultery provoked an international outcry could be executed by hanging instead, the country’s judicial authorities have indicated.”
Anybody know if Death By Chocolate was an option? Or, failing that, perhaps they could stone her WHILE she is being hung. Frankly, she deserves whatever she gets, for marrying a man who couldn’t satisfy her.
(These are the musings of a trained legal mind, albeit one needing more coffee.)
Didn’t have to be that way. They picked.
Thanks for the cartoon, SD. I’ve never seen it before. Excellent.
In the comments, did you see the empathy for the billionaires?
“What about the poor billionaires? Is he actually suggesting at the end that they go to jail. OMG!”
Oy, that makes my head hurt.
They chose poorly.
I can’t imagine anyone not loving cbl. It’s inexplicable.
Their loss. So, they can just live with the guilt, I guess.
I’m gonna have to look for one of those tubes! Bed Bath & Beyond, maybe? Hate to have to order and pay shipping for something like that.
As long as rocks get thrown. That is God’s plan.
Surely that’s sarcasm/snark!
I do pity the mogul horde, having to try so hard to keep from participating in the human race.
Indeed.
It’s very much a no nonsense store, which works for us.
I’m not much of a mall shopper. Haven’t been inside one for years, and that was when it was over 115 for a couple of weeks and we wanted to get out of the house and go somewhere with air conditioning.
Disagree.
I simply can’t get my head around the idea of a hedge fund manager raking in $3Billion (with at B) in a year.
Often, when using garlic in a recipe, other ingredients must also be chopped on a cutting board.
In that case, the flat knife smash and chop is extra efficient.
I saw the two bowls shaking method. Haven’t tried it.
When you get it peeled, you still have to chop it.
Seems like bringing more tools into the equation, unnecessarily.
I tend to avoid throwin rocks. I think it’s onaccounta my glass house.
I always hit something other than the intended target.
But, for some, tools are like toys.
It’s so great that we are all different.
I am the heavy date, darlin’. To the point, though, this has not been my favorite year. I’ve decided not to have it bronzed.
Did your house fire happen this year?
There’s a vid that portends to “critique” Harvey’s analysis. Lamest thing I’ve seen in a long time. Just flat out awful.
I don’t go to our local mall much, either. I’m not much of a shopper, except sometimes when I visit my sister in CA. But we rarely go to a mall either.
That’s why they make slingshots. *g*
Well, he might have made a truly revolting amount of money but at least he only paid 15% in taxes. Just goes to show that there is some sanity in our country.
OK….you got me. That is sarcasm.
Amazon carries those tubes. (Yeah, I know…)
Seeing the end of year wraps is like a comedy, you keep thinking we have a 100 year disaster in every area.
You know that I buy my books and t shirts at the thrift store. Well, I went to Target to buy the boys some clothes and Pow, I got sticker shock. I really need to get out more. Or less.
I’m feeling an urge to burrow deeper into my cave.
Good morning, SD.
This is going to be interesting to watch:
And is why the neo-cons will ultimately fail in turning Iraq into a puppet state through either Maliki or Allawi.
Maliki has violated the Iraqi constitution in spirit by holding these key portfolios personally and not appoint ministers to handle the affairs of these ministries: defense, foreign relations, internal security, intelligence, information. This is the root issue with the Sunnis, the Kurd (who are slightly insulated through their partial autonomy under the constitution), and the Sadrists.
Actually, maybe I should try chucking rocks again. We stayed up late on Christmas night playing Wii with the kids. I cleaned up in bowling :)
I never thought I would see the day that my son would be doing Broadway dancing. I laughed so hard I was almost sick!
Story:
back in the 1980′s, there was a firm called Drexal that specialized in hostile takeovers. Either making them or betting on them or both. One of their traders was a fellow by the name of Miliken. He got caught with his hand in the cookie jar and the SEC went after him. They wanted him to forfeit his pay for the times that he was operating illegally. Drexal fought like hell to keep from publically stating his salary, but failed. $550M per Year! Even in Wall street, that number shocked.
Drexal was questioned on this and came up with a great answer “You bring $4.5B of new business to the firm, we’ll pay you $550M, too”
Boxturtle (Miliken served 10 years, I think)
Teacher says to Little Johnnny, “Wipe that stupid grin off your face, and take your hands out of your pockets.” And Johnny says . . .
I got a million of ‘em.
We need worker owned textile plants. May not drop the price much, if any, but the clothes would be better made and last longer, like they used to.
You should go to Ross, especially for end of season sales, it’s a far cry from straight retail.
What a great idea. But, isn’t that like socialism or something?
All the kitchen stuff we bought is Made in the USA. But, some of it was Swiss technology.
(and Michael Douglas played him in the movie. kind of)
Anybody who was paying attention in 2002 knew this would be the result. We didn’t then know who the players would be but we knew it wouldn’t end well.
Was intended as snark, BUT, he ain’t actually told me no different?!?
I’ve been there before, but it’s a little bit of a drive.
I only got them pj bottoms, socks and underwear. At the point when I went out, I just wanted it Done.
Marxian economics. Has nothing to do with governing. Simply ensuring the workers reap the benefits of their labour, not the capitalist.
Morning, sweet one. I can see making 3 billion, but I can’t see paying tax on only 15% of it.
Yeh huh. Did too.
I have a personal rule: only one credit card and I pay it off in full every month. But I opened a Target account to get free shipping on something (which I wound up buying in the store), and they give 5% off everything with the card. My daughter likes Target for toys and kids’ clothing. I will probably pay off the charge and stick it in a drawer or close it now.
My one credit card has rewards points, and I’m saving them for a couple of flights I need to take this year, so I charge just about everything on it. I get the points, and they get no interest, and my money stays in my account until it’s time to pay the bill. And yes, I know retailers bake their fees into their prices, but that’s happening whether or not I use the card.
I’ll go sit in the time out corner.
I’ve got actual scars on my head because I grew up around people who had better aim than you.
That would result in unions, potentially with Scary Brown Members, agitating for a living wage and safe working conditions. Can’t have that. Much better to let the Scary Yellow Hordes make ‘em for us, as they will do it out side our broders and not force us to realize that the world is not 100% White Christian Eurpoean ancestory.
Boxturtle (You’d think we’d at least make denim. If there’s an american “uniform, it’s denim)
That’s easy, ONS, just step outside before you throw lol.
Schmart Cookie.
And, that’s Low-Fart Cookies for you. :)
I can’t see someone making $3B. It offends me all the way down to my toes.
When I was working, Ellen (sis) and I hit every Ross within reasonable driving distance during my annual visit to CA. I used to wear a lot of Jones NY coordinates (10 years or so ago) and we’d go all over hunting the matching pieces. I would go home with a great wardrobe.
Last year I just shopped for some stuff for my daughter, who is teaching and hasn’t much money. I got her some great clothes.
Gosh, workers being able to afford the goods they produce. Kind of a radical concept but maybe we should try it here. Might actually help stimulate an economy that is, you know, like 70% consumer spending.
No, but I didn’t have that year bronzed, either. ;-)
Off to swim in the great capitalist cesspool.

Can’t see or hear as well from there. Get back out here where we can see ya.
It’s extremely offensive to me to. I heard that Mel Gibson and his wife were splitting their 850 Billion fortune. That’s just nuts. It’s wrong for any one, or two, people to have that much money.
LOLOL. As predicted, “low fart” and variations was the giggle of the weekend. I’m not sure I want THAT as a Grandma memory. Tee hee.
Think about that $3Billion. Those workers’ pension funds put their retirement dollars in the the hands of those hedge fund managers, who sucked $3.Billion.Dollars out of it. It’s like the 1/3 of health insurance premium dollars going into advertising, lobbying and the pockets of CEOs.
It’s all obscene.
Ta da!
Just a leetle edit.
I agree. Call me a hardass, but I think there should be a cap on the amount of money anyone can ‘bring home’ after taxes.
LOLOL! yOU GeT A sTicKY bUN!
Sorry, my fingers got tangled up with the caps lock key. All that sticky garlic juice.
LOL
Destructive.
Shortsighted.
Inhumane.
Conterproductive. (I could go on)
Not that I have strong feelings on the subject or anything like that.
It’s a game of skill, with real risks. Those who really excel can rack up those numbers, legally and honestly, and I have no problem with that because they actually took real risks to make it. But they should have to pay tax on it at a reasonable rate. IMHO.
I’ve worked hard to create and keep my reputation.
But, I love having friends who love me anyway. *g*
Been snowing steadily since I’ve been sitting here, and since today’s to-do list has some errands, I’d better get outta the Diner and on the road. Have a good day, everyone. Chat at ya later.
yep, it’s still priced at pocketbook level, in my experience.
Carefull, you’ll get one of those koch brothers apologist trolls after you.
You know, your parents really did screw up when they let you go.
I know it is a skill, rc, truly . But they are taking the risks with ‘our’ money.
No Ross stores here, although I’ve heard there are some in the east somewhere. We have TJMaxx, but they aren’t as good, selection or price-wise.
Your reputation is unsullied!
Just for you.

Seeing business trends is for real, and has that level of reward. The criminality is in buying businesses and milking them of assets, then selling off the remains usually while getting pay and benefit concessions from the ones who built up the business, the workers.
Same back to you :)
too bad, I used to schedule regular trips to the nearest one, until one opened here. My wardrobe almost entirely comes from there.
Romney/Bain Capital specialty.
Gotta do stuff, thanks for good company.
Absolutely.
I had hoped that RevBev would check in this morning.
If you’re lurkin we’re thinkin about ya.
Go have a wonderfull day. (bright sunny day here)
Good morning all. I could used to sleeping in but then I miss all the conversation of the diner. What to do?
Did you see her yesterday? Took Angela to the vet and came back home with her. Got more time. Every day’s a blessing.
Hey! You know me way better than my mother does.
I had two fantasies when I was younger. One, to be a stand up comedian and the other was to be the bass player in an all girl rock band.
Thank you. I missed that.
She did check back in here later yesterday. Brought Angela home, all cleaned up and with some special food.
You were so dear to her yesterday.
:-)
I guess I owe you…but you’re prolly coffeed out.
I’ll come back in a little bit to help clean up.
(How come everyone’s got little bits of garlic clove on their tables?)
SSSHHH. (you’ll get my dirty biker card yanked)
I know they are expensive, but when I am in the weight range I need to stay in, Talbots clothes always fit, I don’t even need to try them on. I used to shop at a resale where I could get the nice pieces so inexpensively. I have a very boring wardrobe: jeans, and in the summer, a black or a white Talbots 3/4 sleeve, ballerina neck tee. Every summer or so I pick up one. I hang them up still damp, and if I don’t run them through the dryer too long, they last forever. In the winter, change the tee to a white turtleneck. I have a very small clothing expenditure. And a very boring wardrobe, but it’s me!
Sheesh, I forgot about your kindness yesterday. She came back later.
Looking at their store locator, they’re everywhere BUT the midwest and New England.
Mornin OmAli hope you had a nice holiday. Good to see you. *g*
That is a good description. It was so touching, because it was from the heart.
I did, thank you! I lurked just a little bit, but it is so good to be back with everyone. Hope yours was great, too.
I thought it had been decided that that’s just not going to ever happen.
I’m thrilled to hear Angela came home with her.
Too complex a subject for the Diner. I do often wish, though, that lefties, who hold my political heart and soul, had a more nuanced and realistic understanding of the costs and benefits of the various markets. Lots and lots of grays in there.
Yes it was but as I said yesterday I need to put an addition on my house so my daughters toys will fit. LOL
I’ve got to go, too, but maybe I’ll see you back here later, demi :)
Hope everyone can ease back into the real world without too much withdrawal.
Safe travels, pupses, and safe home. msmolly, be careful in the snow.
love from
ohmmm
Spontaneous Kindness Offered.
Should be a prize for that.
Morning Demi.
I tend to throw my words around more hysterically than what I feel on the inside, but true, I do not have a good grasp of markets. At all. So all to the good that we have so many areas of expertise here at the Lake, and in particular, the Diner. Don’t let my hyperbole keep you from trying to teach me, ok? :)
There is a Talbot’s outlet near my sister in Northern CA and we always shopped there too, as well as Ross. My sister is NOT the Talbot’s “type” (more like Chico’s style) but she always found lots to buy at the outlet. I had success because that sort-of-preppy look is my style. Now that I’m retired I live in jeans (in many colors) and v-neck cotton tops or cotton sweaters. I gave Goodwill most of my work clothing, and the little I kept I haven’t worn.
There is a prize. One is afforded the confirmation of ones humanity.
Write a series of diaries. You’ll have readers.
If anyone noticed, our Diner stayed open ALL DAY yesterday, folks dropping in and out and checking in. Not as immediate as our “live” chatting, but good to have a place to stop in.
YES. I was just going to suggest that. No reason not to get some edumacation with our sticky buns. LOL.
I think I probably echoed your sigh of relief when the office clothes went to a new home.
Hey ya.
Yes. The better angels of our natures.
It seems I missed everyone (almost everyone) but I guess that’s what I get for sleepin in.
And my “cap” would probably be pretty darn generous. But below the ‘obscene’ line :)
I don’t want to have to close my eyes when I look at the number, lol!
((rc))
I hope you understand that my comment was not directed at you specifically, but rather at lefties generally. Truth is, one can exhaust the brain by doing a complete examination and analysis of any one particular little niche or aspect of markets, and there are countless little and big areas to be explored, each subject to its own idiosyncracies and societal costs and benefits. Saying “markets are bad” is like saying “animals are bad,” when you are really only having a problem with the wolverines.
I love ya, SD, but that’s like suggesting I clean out the Aegean stables with my personal toothbrush lol.
Seriously, my fingers would fall off if I tried. It could only be done efficiently in a verbal give-and-take context.
I will say unregulated markets are bad. We are living the cost of that now. Unregulated capitalism devours itself through greed. This is correct and indisputable.
G’morning, sleepyhead! We saved ya a sticky bun!
(And I’m supposed to be getting the bod ready to go out and I keep peeking in here. No discipline!)
Me, too! Come on, let’s get out of here! First one to look back gets turned into a pillar of……what?
That’s for sure. Most of them were good quality but very old and not worth trying to give to one of the “Dress for Success” places. They mostly want business suits, and I haven’t worn those for a long time. And they tend to want large sizes and most of my stuff was size 10 or 12. So it went to Goodwill. My daughter inherited a couple of sweaters.
Hey Molly thanks for the sticky bun I always enjoy those. Good thing I swam yesterday. *g*
(in a pool)
You could just throw out a topic and let the give and take begin. You could give and morons like me
couldwould take. It could be great!LOL Why of course. :)
Well I am going to go play some wii bowling with my daughter have a great day all. Can’t waste quality time with my youngen.
I spent about a decade in the front office. Manufacturing engineer and President. Near constant travel and meetings. Always had to look the part. (even got a haircut every 3-4 weeks) Went back to the shop floor 5 years ago. Now I live in Levis and T-shirts. Much happier and definately more comfortable. Only break out some of the ‘other’ for the company Christmas party. One of the things I told myself I would do this week is clean out the closet.
It was in Demi’s pocket, so it might have had fuzz on it. LOL.
LOL sticky buns are good no matter what the topping.
I was always in an information technology division (a man’s world, although less so today), at a university, so I think I overdressed a bit. It worked, and I wound up a Director, which is a level just under a CIO. I got too late a start to be a CIO (finished my degree at 43). The last three years I was a policy person, and I’m still doing that, and some editing, as an on-call employee. I could do that in my jammies! LOL.
I absolutely agree with that. That is one extreme of the argument, only a maniac would argue for zero regulation. The rational arguments will always center around what kind of regulation, and how will it be enforced.
Me too.
Reading carefully, I detect a certain philosophical antipathy on your part. See, that’s part of the difficulty. You can’t force feed complex subleties into a closed or semi-closed ear. I won’t use up my life energy trying to do so. I just don’t have that much energy.
I don’t see antipathy, I see a lack of knowledge and a desire/willingness to learn but not knowing where or how to start.
Thanks for that.
rc,
Sorry to have led you astray. It was not intentional. While it may have come off as flippant it was intended to jump start a possible learning experience. You seemed to indicate a willingness to share your in depth knowledge of a topic that preplexes many of us. I for one would be thrilled with the opportunity to participate.
I think had we had more understanding of Iraqi politics and the politics of the Iraqi National Council, I think the we (blog commenters) could have figured out the competing personalities. What we would not have know was that Ahmed Chalabi was an Iranian agent suckering the Bush administration into a trap. But then, PNAC and the Bush administration had talked themselves into it (war Presidency and all that) before they depended on Chalabi.
American Empire is screwed in Iraq, but the current conflicts give me hope that the Iraqi peoples might finally get a chance to work out their own future after centuries of imperial rule.
Alright, now I guess I have to apologize. ;-) I’m just so conditioned to getting hostility from so many at FDL whenever I venture any opinion other than “Kill all the capitalists.” It takes so much energy to get someone to divest their most egregious misconceptions, and then you still have not yet started the process of getting them to absorb any of the correct stuff. It’s exhausting. Much too big a task for me to undertake, as I am really feeble and in a lot of pain all the time, and my eyes ain’t working so good. Barely getting thru each day with the energy available, truth be told. So, although I would love to share what I know, there are real limits on what I can do now. But, just a crumb to give a sense of how deep the issues run, think of how many times you’ve heard folks condemn “capitalism” without even making clear whether they are referring to money manipulation, or honest free enterprise, as though there wasn’t a world of difference between those two.
As a Marxist I know capitalism isn’t going anywhere. It’s how we want capitalism to work for everybody, not just a select few. I had to teach myself capitalism from the neoclassical perspective in order to advocate how to change the system. Markets, to me, are the same way. I have little knowledge on how to assess risk, etc, but in order to advocate change in the system I need to know how the system currently works. Just knowing that it doesn’t work the way I’d like isn’t good enough.
Gah, I had no idea you were ill, rc…I imagined you the spritely, vigorous type. I hope it’s not serious?
OT, but I have to sign in every time I get on FDL, even though I check the little box to keep me signed in. Is anyone else having this problem?
(((rc))) Very few of us, if any, had any idea you were sick. I hope you can overcome it.
I am surprised to see that you feel attacked for your views. Every time I have seen responses to your input it always seemed very positive. I hope that you will give us the benefit of your insights.
My 2 cents (and that’s all I have) is that capitalism in itself isn’t bad it’s only when there is no regulation and unfettered. IMHO
Yep. I’ve had that problem for a very long time. Others have advised me to dump my cookies or some such technical thing that I don’t really understand…
The most important thing in any system is to have a good sheriff. Rule breakers and cheaters are the ones who do the most damage in any system. (That, of course, includes those who corrupt the system by bribing lawmakers to enact corrupt laws.) You know as well as I how far we are from having anything like a good sheriff now, so all other discussion are a little superfluous until we do something about that. But, you are right that much, not all, of understanding markets is about having a deep understanding of what risk is and how to deal with it, and most people are just lost in space when it comes to thinking about risk. E.g. I wish I had a dollar for every time I’ve seen someone assert that “the workers produce the wealth, ” without deigning to acknowledge in any fashion the risk undertaken by owners or the added value of competetent management. I grew up in a factory business, where every employee had to be trained before they could produce any value to the business. I know something about what the limitations of workers are. These issues are very emotional, but need to be discussed calmly.
I understand being in pain 24/7 that’s a condition which some don’t understand fully. Pain takes everything away from you and it fatigues you. Fatigue is another issue and some think you are tired but you can be rested and feel like you have been run over by a truck. Sorry for your condition. (((RC))) If you ever need someone to talk to my email is steveai at sbcglobal dot net. Feel free anytime.
Hey hey, hey, don’t panic, guys, I’m not dying. My internal health is actually decent, I just have a rather impressive accumulation of wounds and injuries, most notably from a car wreck and some major surgeries, to the point where I can honestly say that my brain is pretty much the only part of my body that is still operating at near capacity lol. So, I don’t move around much, I’m always hurting in a variety of places, and I run out of energy after a few hours. Could be better, but could be worse.
Thank you, BC, and hugging you back. You mostly see me bantering, or making political points. I rarely make economic arguments here.
That is also my HO. And I don’t know of any system that cannot be corrupted.
You nailed it, and thanks, I’m saving that email.
Lot of people hungry for economic knowledge here. Even small bits at a time can be extremely helpful and I, for one, would be very grateful.
I’m checking in after reading four chapters of a book.
It was wonderful to read the discussion about Markets…and Capitalism you guys just had.
It was like reading the Reader’s Digest version of years of comments here, only you guys did in an hour or so. With kindness, thoughtfulness and patience, you guys Got Somewhere. No blood or name calling. Congrats!
I can see from where both sides are coming. Yes, RC, it would be a huge undertaking. But, Like SD said Small Bits.
Now, see, RC, this is something you could do while sitting in your favorite comfy chair. Break it down into bites small enough for us to digest. How do the bites relate to each other.
Thanks for being great again, all y’all.
I’m trying to figure out a way to do what you request in a coherent way, you know I don’t want to say no to any of my friends here, but I don’t see how to do it right now. I will dwell on it, though. For now, I will just say that my whole process has been about trying to PREDICT price changes, for the pragmatic purpose of trading, so anything I say will not be based on any ideology, but only on the pragmatic view that if things are understood correctly, then the price predictions will be accurate. I have shared a number of specific price predictions here over the years, in hopes that my comrades might act on them and make money, and I don’t think anyone ever lost money following my advice. But my way of learning about how things work has always been my way, individually pursued, and deliberately without much reference to or reliance on outside thinkers or the deep-in-the-weeds details of their preferred academic approaches. So, even with this comment, y’all can see the difficulties.
I understand and I don’t think we’re in a hurry. *g*
Re “workers generate the wealth,” that’s true as far as it goes but it’s not the whole picture. In a nutshell, Marxists would like to see the workers assuming the risk normally associated with the capitalist “owner.” There’s no reason a manufacturing company couldn’t be run on a consensus basis instead of the top-down system we currently have. Instead of the capitalist borrowing the money to start and maintain a business, why not a worker’s co-op? Not many capitalists today use a huge chunk of their own money to invest in starting a new business.
Business is dynamic. Efficiency suffers when decision-making is slow, as well as when it is wrong. Can worker consensus make the right decisions quickly enough to minimize loss of efficiency? Doesn’t this question highlight the fact that labor and “mental effort” must be considered as separate categories? This already makes me want to do something else lol. But I have no problem with workers who have capital doing their own start-up, and agree that they would be motivated to do their best because the risk of failure would then be on them. On edit: Not many banks are willing to loan capital to inexperienced entrepreneurs or those who don’t have a significant portion of capital of their own in the game. Where do your workers get that initial capital from?
Well, like I said, in a nutshell. *g*
These are complex issues and in a room full of people could take hours of discussion on just the pros and cons of worker co-ops.
On edit: re capital. If the Fed oan loan the banksters tons of money at next to zero interest to keep them from imploding it can loan worker co-ops money too.
This ain’t gonna work, SD. The desire to make simple statements about complex variables insures that the discussion is too general to be useful. I never had any interest in markets or economics until after I had experience running a factory business, studied a lot of psychology and human behavior, worked as a media planner at a major ad agency, and devoted ten years to the study and practice of law and the way it impacts our lives and institutions. When I turned away from law, I thought markets and trading would be an arena for which my background, serendipitously, had provided the perfect preparation. I studied all the things most study to become market knowledgeable, and after a few years, realized it was all bullshit and bluster, and started over, trusting only what I could observe or experience myself. And by thinking of the market as a living thing, I began to see many patterns that lent themselves to accurate and reliable predictions. But I am not an academic instructor, my great talent, if I have one, has always been to find the flaws in a situation or reasoning process, so as to enable me to turn elsewhere rather than accept as truth something which was not truth. That has its uses, and it also has its limitations. Being able to lay out as a coherent whole what I have absorbed piecemeal over all these years is probably where I run up against one of those limitations.
Gotta go back to work. I’ll catch up with this later.
Namaste
“it can loan worker co-ops money too.”
Zero interest is an historical anomaly, as you know. That aside, why would the Fed let worker co-ops in on the inside game?
Later, amigo. Thanks for breakfast. ;-)
How about ‘doasyouwouldbedoneby’ rather than ‘payback’. You’d feel better. Just sayin’. You describe your parents as ‘devout’ which I would interpret as ‘narrowminded.’ Unless they themselves are pedophiles, I would not make such a harsh indictment of their faith. Only saying, oldnslow, because I think you’ll have a hard time living with your own self, not to make any judgment on the pain your parents obviously caused you in the past.
I had a horrible uncle, really sadistic guy who hurt us kids a lot, loved to do it, psychologically that is. He really did permanent psychic injury to his own kids even. In his very old age he became obviously repentant – never came out with it openly but you could see it in his eyes. He was suffering internally, and we kids could not do other than feel very sorry for him, so we were gentle with him until very soon he passed away.
Your parents will go soon, if indeed you are oldnslow. Don’t add to the misery they probably are already in. You will be better off doing that, really you will. Hoping the best for you all.
Dood! You’re crackin’ me up.
Running late and…..omg the mugs are piled higher than the top of the sink! Let’s see – the very top one says: Although the Voices aren’t real they have some pretty good ideas!
Hope I have a lot of change for the jukebox, cuz this is going to take a while :)
I’m listening to classic r&r and am cleaning up from taking down the tree.
Poor thing couldn’t do another day. Very sad. And, work.
It is sad, taking down the tree. The only good part is being able to hold and admire the old glass ornaments. Just imagine the care and skill that went into fashioning them: creating the moulds; blowing the glass; coating the inside with silver nitrate; laquering the outsides; breaking off the pikes and capping…. Takes forever to trim and untrim the tree because I want to sit and look and think about each one. I used to make fun of my grandmother because she loved her ‘things’ so much. I admit, I love my ornaments that much :)
Your Pretties. Of course.
You know how weird I am, Om. My husband helped me drag the tree outside before he took off the lights. Needle issue. And, I was all like sentimental and saying well, he was a really good tree (it just felt like a boy tree) and just the right height and he smelled so incredible, but now… well it’s just time. And, then I leaned over the tree and sang the chorus to The Circle of Life.
Not making it up. :)
Take down the tree?!?! Noooooo! There is one more week of celebration before the tree has to come down. I’m enjoying every. last. day. of. it.
Go for it.
Wasn’t telling you what to do.
I was talking about ME. *g*
I live in Southern California. It’s been warm and very dry.
Tree was a fire hazard.
Did the tree join in with the song? In a perfect world . . .
Here, lemme open the juke up and do the switch so ya don’t hafta pay. If’n yer gonna wash mugs an’ shit shouldn’t hafta pay for da music.
Jeez, it’s about time you realized that. ;-)
I understand completely :)
Whenever we go out of town I talk to the house and tell it to take good care of itself until we return. come on, everyone, admit it, you do stuff like this, too!
I thought you guys down in So Cal were getting all of *our* rain. Dryest December I can remember around here.
He leaves his spare change in the kitchen and I snitch all the quarters. Don’t tell :)
I cannot believe I’m back here at 4:45 p.m. EST and the conversation is still goin’ on!! But I do think OmAli has cleaned up all of the dirty mugs. What a peach!
Now I have to go out again. Grrr. The 3″ of forecast snow wound up an inch of wet slop. I’d almost have preferred snow that piled up to snow that melted so fast and made things so messy when I had to be out.
Oh, well, in NW Indiana one doesn’t select the weather, it just happens.
I tell Abner he’s in charge when I leave the house. Not that it’s necessary. He knows.
Did Abner get something special in his stocking?
Stick around, we’re gearing up for evening shift!
The traditional can of Christmas tuna. The boys would have it no other way. Loved your Christmas pictures of Rod and the chick. Sassy, is it?
Duh, Om, the Tuna Revolutionary! How could I have forgotten :(
Yes, Sassy. she thinks she is the boss of everybody and will walk right in the door if you let her, the little baggage.
That’s what I’m afraid of. I won’t get ANYTHING done at this rate. And in addition to making one granddaughter a dress and another one a jumper with an applique for their early January birthdays, I’ve picked up another big project. I absolutely cannot hang out here all day! LOL.
She probably wonders why she’s relegated to a coop when you enjoy a nice, cozy house.
Ooohhh. A sewing project. Fun. I wish I had time to sew!
Project as in work rather than volunteer or sewing or cooking?
Ysd, do you run your own business?
Yes, ma’am. Well, I should say Mr. and I run our own business. We have a coffee roasting biz.
That is really interesting. Do you sell to local coffee shops or nationwide? SD, you get our coffee from ysd, yes?
Yeah, she said she’d sic Abner on me if I didn’t.
You must have been standing right behind me, Startled the beejezus out of me :)
heh heh heh
A sewing project. My daughter-in-law, who is as sharp as they come, is totally clueless about sewing. They have two very long built-in benches (150″ each) that have upholstered cushions. These came with the house, and she wants different covers on them. She said, “OMG an upholsterer wants hundreds of dollars to do them!” Because she has no idea of the complexity, she thinks because I sew I should be able to do them. She sent them home with me, wants me to tell her how much fabric to buy, and she’ll get it and send it.
There are a number of pitfalls to this project, but I hate to tell her that I can’t do it. There is a good reason for the “hundreds of dollars” she was quoted.
Edit to add: starting in January I have a Notre Dame project, too. I’m still an on-call employee and the Info Tech division where I worked is moving their website, adding and deleting web pages, and I’m going to be working about 20 hours a week editing, proofreading, and lending a birds-eye view to the overall project. They figure I will be able to spot duplication, inconsistencies, etc.
We sell locally and mostly wholesale. We don’t ship much outside of the SF Bay Area because shipping costs make it too pricey for regular folks. We oughtta be the roaster for Lakeside Diner, though. *whistles for Abner*
Omg, over 10 feet each. Yep, rife with possibilities Most of them bad. Good luck with this my friend :)
I’m so in awe of your website project. I did the copy editing for a criminal justice text once when I was a dept secretary, but nothing like what you are doing.
How much would you charge to ship to St. Louis? I love coffee and like to try different kinds. If you can’t ship to Missouri I understand just checkin.
I have one of those computerized sewing machines (not an expensive one) and it doesn’t handle bulky fabric very well. I do still have my old machine which is somewhat better at that. But the zipper in these cushions is nearly as long as the cushion itself. She said, “Oh just re-use the old zippers” with no understanding of how long it would take me to pick out the old ones. You shoulda seen me wrestling the cushions out of the car and into my basement where I sew.
RE website project: I am blessed (cursed!) with an internal editor that never sleeps. If I see a grammar or spelling error in something I’m reading, it may as well be flashing red. That sometimes interferes with my ability to read for content, which is the curse part. I have long ago forgotten many of the rules, and couldn’t diagram a sentence to save my life, but I am a good editor and a decent writer, and it comes easily to me. So the project will be fun, and they’re paying me an hourly rate equal to my old salary, so it will mean some additional money, too.
That’s a good question, Popeye. What would be a reasonable order size? Do you have a website? Is there a way individuals can order, or would it need to be a huge amount?
I thought I saw SD chime in upthread and say you already are the chosen coffee supplier here!
My sister and brother-in-law live in Castro Valley. I should get them some of your coffee. And I should look you up when I visit next.
I’m lol thinking of little you wrangling those huge, unwieldy cushions into your car, then into the house!
I like the editing idea. Mad money, and doing something you like and are good at. Win win.
When I got home last night I just left them in the car, and dealt with them this morning. Fortunately (or not) my son got them into my PT Cruiser (with the back seat down) and everything else fit in willy-nilly. I need to go back downstairs and start measuring carefully and drawing it out on paper. And I need to tell her in no uncertain terms that this will NOT be an overnight project. I think she’s doing what all of us do when we don’t understand how to do something. We think it must be easy for someone who DOES understand.
My take on this is…. You are in a better position than she is to speak with a prof upholsterer about the job. Just be the facilitator :)
Of course, I am always looking for the easy way out :)
I love that idea. Especially with the part time job coming up.
I think Molly is being overly generous with her daughterinlaw. But, then, I’ve always thought that Molly was a nicer person than I.
I mean, I could probably paint someone’s entire house, but that doesn’t mean I will. :)
Heh. I won’t tell SD, and I won’t tell anyone that you talk to your house. Promise. (sliding away, checking the exit) Not for nothing, but I spoke to my house once, and it burned to the ground. Just sayin’ . . .
Me, too. Sure was sudden.
Rc and Demi- this is a strange place. But good.
So this is where the club meets when they’re not leaving comments reminding me that Southern California has lots of neighborhoods and people in it.
Wow it’s fascinating here….no offense to the OP with the original interesting post.
Hi, everybody. Can’t believe there are so many posts, and so late in the day.
I can’t resist chiming in on the sewing project – the upholstering 10′ long cushions project. Wow. I sew, sorta, but although I keep saying I’m going to make a cushion for my window seat or a new slipcover for my sofa, I keep putting it off because it’s DAUNTING!
I can handle a sleevelss dress in summer-weight cotton, a skirt with a zipper, or not, even a blouse with sleeves. But a cushion? With 10′, or maybe they’re 20′ zippers? And no doubt box-shape, with piping all around? I’ve read the instructions, but…
Methinks I’d have simply said, “I’m sorry, DIL, this is not something that my level of sewing skill can cope with. There’s a reason the upholsterer quoted you the price they did; these cushions are huge, for one thing, and the work is extremely complex. Just not something I can do, so sorry.”
But then, I don’t have a DIL, or a son, to disappoint, so maybe that’s the difference. OTOH, I have never really had trouble saying no. Or at least not for a long time. I discovered fairly young that “no, I can’t” at the beginning was less distressing than saying “yes” and then failing because I really couldn’t figure out how/find the time to do whatever it was.
Oh, I probably WOULD paint the house. I don’t mind making the attempt to do it.
There are cushions for two benches. One is in the kitchen, and it’s not as deep (only about 15″), but equally long. It won’t take quite as much fabric. The other bench is upstairs in their “bonus” (i.e., “play”) room. I think I will ask her to pick fabric for the kitchen one and let me tackle that first and see how it goes before I try to do the second. I think they’ll need the kitchen one first, and the other can wait. They use the bench seating in the kitchen when all 6 kids are in residence.
Cushions are about 12.5 ft. long. The zippers are along one “boxed” side, and are probably 11.5 ft. long. Fabric store sells them in a long roll. That was my first concern.
I have been sewing for more than 30 years, although I haven’t done any real upholstery. I did a cushion for a small bench I made by putting together those white cubes for my granddaughters once, and it’s the same principle on a much bigger scale. I can take apart the existing cushion to see how they did the zipper. No piping. It should have some to make the edges stronger, but DIL said “no” and I wasn’t going to argue, because I don’t want to make what would turn out to be at least 60 ft. of piping just on one cushion (more like 70 ft. on the other).
This is why upholsterers get “hundreds of dollars” to do this sort of thing.
Prolly somewhere in the neighborhood of 9 to 10 bucks for the shipping on a 1 lb bag of coffee…website is being redone so we can’t do internet orders right now.
OK, wiser heads (yours, OmAli’s and Demi’s) have prevailed and I sent my DIL a nice email telling her the project is beyond my capabilities, expertise, and equipment (and time, with this work gig coming). I offered other help with the project.
Thanks, friends.
Did you really? Wow. I’m…gee, I almost feel guilty. But it does really sound like a heck of a lot of work.
Um, you weren’t going to do it for free, were you? (ducking).
Like you said, ‘This is why upholsterers get “hundreds of dollars”’to do this sort of thing.
If dil is a good person, she will understand.
Thanks.
Yeah, actually we didn’t talk money at all. I think she’s a victim of what we’ve all done — simplifying something we don’t understand but looks easy. What could be so hard about putting fabric on a big boxy cushion, eh? Money would never have been the issue.
I was originally leaning toward trying to do it (I’m the type who never wants to say, “I can’t.”), but I started even before this thread thinking about the daunting task and wanting OUT. You guys just gave me the affirmation to do it.
Edit: Yes, DIL is a very good person. She’ll be fine with it.
