[As many of you know, KarenM recently donated a kidney to her son-in-law Jimmy. Of course there's a lot that went into getting them into the OR, but we'll start with some tales from the surgery. What a beautiful gift. -Ed]
First off, after getting there ready to go, they delayed the surgery by one day. My son-in-law had to have an upper and lower endoscopy on Tuesday and they wanted him to rest afterwards. Originally, the surgery was scheduled for Wednesday, October 19th, but they re-scheduled it for Thursday, October 20th.
Paul came down after my surgery on that Thursday and stayed with me in recovery and then came to my room with me. He came down again on Saturday and took me back to Theressa’s hotel suite (she had a lot of meeting planning points) and was able to get a suite. Paul stayed over… we had breakfast the next morning in the hotel and the chef picked up our check. I told her that I had just donated a kidney. After that, we went back to the hospital to see Theressa and Jimmy again, and his brother and sister-in-law and his aunt.
A funny story… they had given me some Versed and then introduced me to Jimmy’s surgeon. Theressa said I was polite and greeted him, but I don’t remember any of it. That Versed makes your forget everything!!!
Paul took me home on Sunday.
I couldn’t sleep in the hospital. They had those massage thingies around my ankles and they kept waking me up. The next night they kept waking me up to take my vital signs. I was really glad to get home where I could get some sleep. Of course, I did get some sleep in the hotel suite on Saturday night.
Jimmy looks great now. He was looking a bit grey about the face and his skin was a bit puffy, but now his skin is tight and he has a lot of color in his face. He looks fantastic! His hernias had come back. The surgeons fixed them and gave him a tummy tuck. He didn’t have much belly fat, but he had some loose skin and they wanted to get rid of that, so that he would heal better. Fat does not heal as well as muscle does.
When they put the kidney in him, it started making urine right away. He says he feels great now. They removed the staples a few weeks ago and removed the tubes that were draining his kidney. He looks great now and a bit slimmer. He had to lose some weight… he cut down on his portions and did a lot of walking. They have a dog and Jimmy probably walked him quite a bit.
We went to their house for Thanksgiving and had a wonderful feast… though I could not eat much because I had filled up on the nibblies before dinner.
I am just thrilled that they will be able to have a normal life in a month or two. My daughter used to work all day, then they would eat dinner and then do dialysis at home until 1:00 or 2:00 in the morning.
Everything I went through was worth it!!! …even all of the invasive tests they did throughout the screening process.

Good Morning and Welcome…What a fantastic gift…the gift of life. What could be better. Good luck and health to you all.
Now, that’s a gift of love, truly, KarenM.
It’s great to see you here this morning to share your tale.
Wow, it’s an amazing story. Was the hospital far from your home?
And, a great morning to you Bev. How’s every little thing? Missed you for a few mornings and hope all is well. Is it?
Hey, thanks…I do go to work this morning so up early…plus constantly watching Angela. She is still eating…sleeping lots. On notice to get to the vet when we need to….So most of my time right now is for her. Thanks for checking. And you?
Oh, we’re all fine here. Give that sweet “old” girl some pets from me. I’m so glad you’re taking super care of her. We all take care of each other, don’t we?
a great morning read karen that warms my heart and gives more insight into the kind of people who are the community here at the lake
hi everyone, am running late for work and won’t be able to banter, hope everyone has a great weekend
KarenM,
What a beautiful story. That is one young man who will never make cracks about his mother-in-law. So glad to hear that everyone is doing fine and just in time for Christmas!
Excuse my manners this morning, good morning firedogs.
Wow!
I am in awe of your selflessness. And your grace, graciousness. Your love pouring out in your actions. You must be so relieved that all that pressure is lifted from your young ones. My heart softens and opens shariing your experience.
Talk about the gift that keeps on giving. And, priceless.
Morning all,
{{{{{{{{{ KarenM }}}}}}}}}}
Awe inspiring !
Thanks for this, KarenM. Is it too naughty to say it gives new meaning to ‘thanks for sharing’ – which is usually sarcasm.
Making your whole family better able to live and cope is pretty amazing, and not something everyone would see as the opportunity that you obviously did. Good going.
That’s not naughty at all.
I was going to wait until we started talking about holiday food to be naughty and bring up kidney pie.
(ducking)
You are a kind and wonderful person KarenM. I don’t know that I could be so generous. I’m glad you’ve both made it through the surgeries and welcome back.
What a beautiful story, KarenM, and what a beautiful gift to your son-in-law, and of course, to your daughter also. We’ve missed you. I am so happy you are back and healing.
Versed? Oh yes, I’ve had that for a colonoscopy and afterward you talk very rationally to the doctor and remember NOTHING.
Kidney pie, demi? LOL.
As a male the feeling of giving birth is one I will never know. I wonder, since in a way you gave another life, if you felt any similarity.
Good morning all and welcome back KarenM!
KarenM,
Know that the universe we all inhabit is much improved by extraordinary people like you. You are one of lifes rare heroes. Thank you for sharing with us.
Hey! organic jokes, no less, you’d fit right in in scrubs.
Scrubs, the tv show? Or, just scrubs that people in hospitals wear?
We’ve missed you also, Margaret. Glad you are here this morning!
Dude, you’re here early. How was the party last night?
x2. Saving a life is a big, cosmic deal.
The everyday scrubs you see in hospitals. And medical supply store ads. But I get a kick out of the tv show when I see it.
Here’s something that made me smile. A little.
Gingrinch.
We got hooked on that show. Did you see the one where the entire episode was in song? (Everything comes down to poo.)
Gooood morning. Party was very nice. I am truly blessed to be employed by wonderfull people married to beautifull caring women. The Presidents wife is the current Pres of the local Opera Guild and was an absolute delight to visit with. The other owners wife wanted to trade hair care tips. Much fun had by all.
He’s sooooo…. portly.
Very heartwarming and inspiring story. Glad you and Jimmy are doing fine. What a gift to give and receive really what the season is about. Versed (Milk if Amnesia)yes I know it well good stuff. Happy to have you back.
(((Rev Bev and Angela))) Glad you are taking care and spending time with her. A special person indeed. Thinking of both of you.
Hello to you Peg as well good to see you. Seems we hit the trifecta this morning.
Good morning all Firedogs.
I did, it was delicious. Well, maybe that’s not the ideal description.
BTW, so glad to see you again here, Margaret. And all you others, too.
msmolly,
Been waitin’ for you this morning. I loved your comment last week about “last night we got 2″ of ‘no snow in the forecast’”.
Last night we were supposed to get “a slight dusting” and this morning I shoveled 5″ of that slight dusting. I do not know why I even pay any attention to weather forecasting. “g”
An enthusiastic *two thumbs up!* for Everything Comes Down to Poo.
In fact, here it is!
And incredibly talented cast. Love me some Dr. Cox.
Alrighty, then. We’ve got some Scrub fans. I shoulda done a thread on that show when I had a chance.
Thanks for the link. I just watched it on youtube before you posted it, but it’s great for others to be exposed to that wit and talent.
This is what snow fairies love to hear, it makes them enjoy the fun looks of dismay on shovel ready types, and glee on the kids’ faces.
OMG, AppleCanyon, you get teh PRIZE!
We have snow this morning again but I suspect it WAS in the forecast, and it’s only supposed to be 1/2 inch.
Welcome back Karen,
I do so much appreciate the feelings that reading your story stirs in me. You are an inspiration for me to strive a bit harder at fighting the good fight.
Good Morning everyone.
OH that is hilarious! I’ve never seen Scrubs, and it looks like I missed something.
I am all in favor of a white Christmas, as long as snow starts Christmas eve and is gone by the 26th. Ditto Christmas music (no such luck, unfortunately).
Good morning. How went the fight yesterday?
Am looking at white roofs on neighbors’ houses, from hoarfrost – but love snow. Of course, do not expect me to drive in it.
(please don’t grammar police my 38. OK? :-))
(on edit; or spelling. shit)
As with most shows, the writers varied from season to season, and thus, some were better than others, but the term genius is not an overstatement, imho.
Texans driving in snow or ice! You are funny this morning.
Ruth and msmolly,
I did have that look of “dismay” this morning. Our Yorkie looked out the storm door and may just have well said “you want me to go out in that schtuff…” I shoveled while he went out and did his morning duty.
I did get the wood moved up on the deck last night so all is not lost.
Cox’s character especially. Genius. Love that show, and still watch rerurns on various channels from time to time.
Morning OnS, sounds like Missouri drivers. 1/4 inch of snow and the interstates move at the speed of a turtle.
Twenty walk-in petition signers at this location along with a few more people requesting petitions to gather signatures from their friends and families over the holidays. We have more than double the number of KNOWN petition circulators we were hoping to get, at the start.
As once I went out of state, some of the total freeze at sight of effect is gone. But I don’t trust those other sorts.
Karen! great to see you!
Glad everything has turned out so well!
Here’s to everyone having a great holiday!!!
Love it. Good going.
Drove a tow truck for a while about 5 years ago. 3 straight 18 hour days pulling cars out of wrecks and ditches during an ice storm. Unbelievable how BAD some of my fellow citizens are when it comes to bad weather.
Good morning ’99!
Huh? I don’t see anything in #38 to “grammar police” (or spell police either). I was just wondering what kind of fight nonquixote was in that I didn’t know about. *g*
Here’s a scrubs clip that is very appropriate for this thread.
YAAHH HOOO. Saw the little punk went after Planned Parenthood yesterday.
I should get one of the DVDs of the show. Of course, I’m still slowly working my way through season #2 of West Wing. I was a big fan of it when it was currently broadcast, and was amazed at how timely it still is. They were fighting over all of the same things we’re STILL fighting over. But Jeb Bartlet only had to deal with relatively sane Republicans, not today’s clown car.
Tow trucks very good business in Missouri during the winter. The problem is they wait until the snow gets to a certain measure before they start scraping.
When I went to Milwaukee to see my daughter once in the winter they had 12 inches of snow and the interstate was squeaky clean he next day. Amazing difference.
Ah the West Wing, when TV was good as compared to the crap they show now a days. If my wife and kid would let me I would get rid of TV but I am overruled by a 2-1 margin.
I thought it a terrible sentence. I was trying to be funny. Saw you explain affect and effect in another thread and was stunned at your command of our language. Something I don’t share and try to hide for embarrassment.
non is signature collecting on recall Gov Walker in WI.
Funny, it snowed on the Thanksgiving I went north on a highway in Missouri from St. Louis, only to discover that I was being followed by a whole mule train of cars. If they’d known I was from TX they’d have all died of shame. I was driving a rented van.
the eyes of newt are upon you.
Boardwalk Empire or Sons Of Anarchy are pretty good teevee. Also Bored to Death.
It sounds like it was a 2 lane road. Good luck with that in Missouri. They get to those after the interstates, and highly populated areas. The rural areas are last. Very bad highway dept. in St. Louis IMHO.
I haven’t seen Sons of Anarchy but heard it was pretty good. I mostly watch the series on Showtime: Dexter, Weeds, Homeland, Nurse Jackie etc. and course Hockey. *g*
Actually, it was the interstate, two lanes in either direction. The snowplows kicked in after about half a day. But snow isn’t hard to drive in when it’s coming down, and I really mean it, I’m really only afraid of the other drivers.
Good morning.
Wonderful story, great gift KarenM.
I hear ya on the other drivers. I usually just stay in the right hand lane and drive accordingly. If the other people don’t like it they can go around me or be patient. It doesn’t matter to me I won’t be the one in the ditch. *g*
No, please. Not that. I’m sorry I posted that link.
Thank you for the information on nonquixote and the signature gathering.
Go nonquixote!!!
I saw that too where Walker went after Planned Parenthood yesterday and it appears that he has had success in that part of his plan. Just gives a chance for more people to be pi$$ed off at him and more people willing to sign the petition of recall IMHO.
Good to see you E-cahn glad you are here. *g*
So, why do you want to get rid of the tv? I’m confused.
Non is doing some great work in Wisconsin. We could use someone like him in all 50 states.
Yes, absolutely nothing that he and his wrecking crew is not going after. But this is PUAC, I might be dragging my garden hoses back out to water my raspberries one more time if we don’t get a good snow cover soon.
Went to bed early last night & made up for it by sleeping late this morning. How are you?
I can watch everything I do online and don’t really need the TV but I am over ruled. My bro found a free site that broadcasts all the hockey games for free and I can watch my series one week late online.
They can go by and welcome, do not need competition from the needy in the speed lane, thanks. Now that I don’t drive to work every day, I probably am more dangerous on the road, though.
Petty really pisses me off. Bullies more so. I hope they bury the piece of shit.
Me and 58% of the voting population of the state. Nice to be in good company.
Doin well. I am going to Keiner Plaza tonight the occupiers are having a marriage ceremony for two of the occupiers and they are re-taking the plaza. I have to deliver cold weather stuff and attend the wedding ceremony.
It makes a difference when you don’t have to be at a job for sure.
Sorry for going political at the PUAC. I’m a little jealous about the rasberries though.
That’s so kewl. Did the couple meet at Occupy, or had they been going together & think it was a particularly poignant place to get married? Best wishes to the couple.
Amen!
I have some more shoveling to do so I better get on out of here.
Non, you can have all the snow you need from our dumping here in N. Ill. last night. If I could, I would bring you a dumptruck load to help out the raspberries.
Have a great weekend everyone.
Bury his sorry A$$ what a fascist POS he is. I have been following the recall effort and you are doing great work up there. One of my daughter lives there and is a teacher. I am sure she appreciates the work being done to recall him.
Good morning Karen and PUAC firepups. Late to puac this morning, overslept. Had the grandkids over last night while their parents went out to a company dinner party, then stayed up for LLN.
Karen, thank you for sharing that story. It is a most generous and selfless thing you did for your SIL, donating one of your kidneys. A huge sacrifice and risk for yourself as well. You are brave and compassionate.
Thanks I believe they have been together for a while but will find out tonight. I will probably write a diary about it if i can get enough thoughts together.
Whatever works for you, but at my house when we do watch tv – a show or a movie or concert, we usually all watch together, after dinner. So, for this family the larger screen is advantageous.
I watch the Muppets with my daughter and my wife has her shows. Sometimes we watch a movie together so I don’t make a big deal of the TV issue. If I were single I would prolly get rid of it.
Take care, AC2.
I am gonna take off got some things to do. Everyone stay safe and have a great weekend. See ya at Caturday hopefully.
I was told that the late fall and early winter soil moisture determined the outcome of the crop more than spring rains. These are an heirloom variety that is already having a bit of trouble responding to changing (warmer, longer growing seasons) weather patterns over the last five years.
Wishing all the best the universe has to offer for all. Off to start my day.
((oldnslow))
You, my dear, are one of the best. Sending warm, gooey fondness to you and yours.
Mornin’, pups
“Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.” The Dalai Lama
A selfless act of kindness.
The bacon is almost ready. I’m off to look for some trouble to get into.
Thanks all for the chat. I just wish Karen could have been here. I hope she reads all of the best wishes from her friends.
Ta!
One more cup of coffee and some breakfast coming up. French toast, made with home-baked bread and some fresh farm eggs, and maple syrup.
Nice to see everyone here this morning.
Our better convictions are demanding action…Thanks again KarenM.
Other Sir Dudeness!
Hi, demi
Have to get going, thanks for the good company.
My TV is in a big teak entertainment center I bought many years ago, and it has doors that close over all of the “stuff” so the look is nice. But I watch so little TV that I decided someone could break in and steal my TV and it would be weeks before I discovered it was missing.
Last time I opened it I discovered I had been into my CDs and left a big mess that will prolly take a couple of hours to sort out and tidy up.
I went off to fix some breakfast and came back to discover everyone is leaving. Hi, SD and waving to Demi and Ruth and anyone else I missed. I have to get going too.
Can we all remember today, as we go about our lives, the young Mohamed Bouazizi? He was a month older than me, and sparked a revolution that has swept the globe. I hope he rests well.
Mohamed Bouazizi
That same pic is making the rounds on facebook right now. I got choked up when writing about him earlier.
He’s joined the ranks of the Buddhist monks who self-immolated in Viet Nam in the early 60s.
Thanks for the photo,
But, aren’t you supposed to be cleaning your fucking kitchen? *g*
I wrote that on my facebook post about him. Compared him to a number of revolutionaries over the centuries. I specifically mentioned the nameless Tibetans who have stood against centuries of repression.
Built-in excuse: slept in and kittehs haven’t finished breakfast yet.
It’s amazing what you have time for when limit TV viewing. I remember the very first reply to my first comment here. I would have to go back and find it but paraphrasing the reply was “Turn off the TV”. Best advice I could have received.
Karen M, just want to say that your act was incredibly selfless and truly an inspiration for this season. Glad you are back to tell the tale, thank-you for reminding us about organ donation!
