Marx in the Morning
Richard D Wolff, one of the few Marxist economists in the US, has a 4 session course on the basics of Marxian economics. It’s not about socialism or communism, it’s about capitalism. Prof Wolff will put a lot of what a lot of people believe of Marxist theory to rest in the first session. The link below will take you to the 1st session. The 1st session is in 6 parts, the other 3 are in 8 parts. The 1st session is an hour and a half. Sessions 2-4 are about 2 hours each. My link will put you on an autoplay link, after the 1st part plays the 2nd follows automatically. There’s a link like that for all 4 sessions and they look like this on YouTube:
‘Intro to Marxian Economics’ – Session 2
“Intro to Marxian Economics” 2 (1of8) – Richard D Wolff
“Intro to Marxian Economics” 2 (2of8) – Richard D Wolff
“Intro to Marxian Economics” 2 (3of8) – Richard D Wolff

Mornin SD big Caturday yesterday. :)
Mornin’, pups
Yeah, that was a record breaker.
Good morning, you freedom-and-coffee (and tea) lovers. Look who’s first! What a man. I mean it, I’ve known all along this fine fellow was destined for great things. Now that I see the promise of the generation coming up behind me, I no longer feel compelled to be last. Someone else needs to assume that duty. I did it for a solid week just to honor the great SouthernDragon and commemorate his new endeavor, but a man’s got to know his limitations, and I’ve reached mine. The field is officially open to all comers. Pancakes and bacon for me, please, with plenty of maple syrple.
Morning pups. Thanks for the post & host, SoDrag.
Don’t know why that came out as a reply to you rc. Didn’t hit that button.
Good morning, popeye and pupses, and thank you SD.
I love to read Robert Fisk:
edit: and rc and oldnslow and SD, who came along while I was typing :)
Canada under conservative rule is becoming a puppet government of the United Corporations of America.
Sorry to blog whore this morning (not really). I put a new diary up so lets get those comments to at least 20 or so. LOL
http://my.firedoglake.com/popyeye99/2011/12/05/occupy-supply-st-louis-a-special-day/
Oh, yes you did. *g*
Good Morning Southern Dragon.
Cold some more and the wind is back, in gusts.
(I’m staying in most of the day.)
I learned from the best. *g*
More from Marshall Auerback.
Mornin OmAli seems like I just talked to you a few hours ago. I have been up since 3 am. Sleep I don’t need no stinkin sleep.
The KO interview with Scott Olsen was awesome. He is a real hero and I am pretty sure that attack on him will come back to haunt the PTB.
Fisk has been one of my faves for a looooooong time.
His Great War for Civilization is a must read for anyone interested in the Middle East.
Just told a coworker I was ready for winter to be over. Much to my dissmay he informed that it was yet to start. Goshdarnitheck!
We holed-up all week end here as it is cold and wet. Dawg knows we need about 40 days and 40 nights of rain though.
Another book to add to my list. I can’t keep up with ya. *g*
The brutal reaction to OWS appears to finally have shaken many of the Obamabots out of their ill-considered adulation of the president. Planet POV is a website full of wonderful, sincere, and progressive contributors who happened to be mostly Obamabots. I stopped going there for this reason, but returned this morning. Passionate defense and excellent analysis of OWS, and not a word of defense for Obama. He wasn’t actually criticized, but it’s clear he’s lost his support among this group. Whether or not Obama is personally responsible for the crackdowns, the appalling treatment of OWS has cost him dearly.
It’s a tome. Great read, though.
On edit: plenty of used copies out there. Save ya a few bucks.
How did the lasagna turn out? Your recipe-description was priceless.
As long as potty breaks are allowed :)
Plenty of time for potty breaks. You can pause anytime. *g* I highly recommend going full screen with the vids. Wolff is quite animated. I’d love to take a course with him live and in living colour.
Good Morning SD and pups,
Marxian refresher course is bookmarked. Thanks for the links. I imagine that I was not paying all that much attention to school classes, those many decades ago.
Just like Australia under PM Julia Gillard.
SD, I am through Session II and am pretty captivated. Richard Wolff is wonderful. I have questions that are swirling around and starting to form but aren’t fully coalesced yet, so let me wait a bit before asking.
I was thinking the same thing.
And, how blessed are we to have a cozy hole to hang in? I know I don’t have to remind you in particular, but when I’m having trouble going back to sleep, if I wake up in the middle of the night and can’t get back to dreamland, I just rock myself and say, I’m cozy, I’m cozy.
1) I note that nobody has been arrested or even charged for this. I suppose this will be another civil suit settled out of court. *sigh*
2) Can’t access from the office, but the fellow is a good talker and I see no reason this would not be worthwhile.
3) Like it matters. Putin still controls everything he needs to control. And that’ll be true even if he gets no votes at all.
4) And much like in America, the politicians knew NOTHING about it, it was done by flunkys who meant well. Nothing to see here, move along….
5) Show me one country where austerity has worked. This ain’t gonna work either. Sure a shame that the people who fund the politicians can’t tolerate the one solution that could work.
6)Down with CANADA?!? Nothing wrong with Canada that couldn’t be fixed with a change of government. That’s another thing we have in common with our Northern neighbors.
Boxturtle (The last two links are blocked for me *sigh*)
That puts things back in perspective pretty quickly.
I don’t know how you get up so early in the morning.
IF he is not responsible, it’s proof that there is a shadow government operating the affairs of state. If he is responsible, he can’t continue to claim he “understands the frustraion” of the movement.
Either way, he’s a loser.
Um, dear Om, one can read while On the potty, ya knows.
Did you sleep well last night? I got a straight 6, which isn’t too bad.
Hey, when yer done with this one I can point ya to a course on reading Capital with David Harvey. Something like 12-13 2 hour lectures and ya have to read Capital along with it.
Totally agree.
Enough said.
Morning Everyone!
SD, thank you for bringing us today’s lesson. I will definitely be in class this afternoon.
Seems like I owe ya a drink. Your pleasure?
What we see is 40 years of manipulation by the corporations and finance industry. There’s no shadow govt, it’s right there in your face, bought and paid for. Try workin’ on solutions to rectify that situation.
I don’t stay up as late as you, for starters.
Secondly, I got used to getting up early when I had to get three kids to school before going to work. Sometimes I got up and worked out in the livingroom before I woke anyone else up.
We’ll see how I do once sonny goes off to college. (I’m making him a tuna melt for breakfast, right now.)
LOL! Not with Charlie on one’s lap, I thought of immediately :) But yes, generally.
Slept well, thank you and so glad you did. Loved your stage instructions at the end for lights out or dimmed.
I was tired last night but wired. Used to be when I would get all chatty late at night when AbuAli was trying to read in bed he would threaten me with reading aloud from the Bass Pro Shop Catalog. Some of the descriptions of the fishing lures were pretty racy! Worked every time!
Awwww. One of the Enron staff wants to do some revisionist history and try to get everyone to see Enron and its people as poor widdle victims:
Oh, really? Let’s go to the tapes, Frankie:
And that’s just a small taste of what these Enron traders were saying.
Sit next to me!
Good morning, Diner denizens. I am definitely in the economics challenged demographic. I think I squeaked out a C in my only college econ course, and that would’ve been in about 1961, so whatever I did absorb is long gone. I plan to set aside time to watch the Marx stuff, maybe a session a day, once the holidays are past.
That photo up top looks like a dining car on an old train.
And a pox on all you weather wimps. Our HIGH today is going to be about 41º and on Friday the high will be 28º!!
Nothing will change my opinion. They can talk all day for years, it won’t change a thing.
I WILL! Can we pass notes?
Great stuff. Thanks for asking. I will make CBL put the recipe up.
Sorry for not keepin up this morning. Pretty busy here.
(yes, I am at work)
Focus here is the recall. Local LWV members were explaining the difficulties with trying to get photo ID’s for seniors without them, to be able to vote. I suggested to one of them that a plan should be put forth to have a phone call demanding personal assistance from our district state assembly representative for each and every one of the dozens of known seniors having difficulties.
Testimonials coming out from those arrested last week in LA reveal that LAPD doesn’t believe in potty breaks. Those arrested were kept handcuffed on the bus for up to 12 hours without getting one. Needless to say, bladders can’t hold out that long.
Looks like the weather in Indiana is on par with Missouri. I think it’s supposed to snow next week.
Morning, here we have a cover of slush and I already have heard a limb fall. Need the moisture, but after all summer’s drought, trees are going to be awfully stressed.
“Walk the Picket Lines withya”…..
I only took Business Economics in school. It was only later on that I became interested in the stock market and about 15 years ago that I became intriqued on how the Fed steals from us.
Wow, 403 comments on Caturday? I think it was in the 200s when I last looked and commented. But because there’s no numbering it’s hard to tell.
With photos so easy to do since the advent of the camera cellphone, they could run by and do the honors themselves, including whatever oaths they want to administer, as elected representatives.
Shoot. The values of the Military/Industrial/Corporate/Government Alliance can be boiled down into three steps: Rape, Pillage, then Burn.
Oh, that would be fun!!
Sure!
During the runup to the debt ceiling thing, I read quite a bit here at FDL about MMT. Letsgetitdone wrote very clearly, and a few others also.
I’ve never LIKED econ much, but I do need to understand more about it than I do. Maybe forcing myself to be still and watch SD’s linked sessions will help.
It’s not bad enough that we are wimps, but you are sending a pox upon us too? Fine! And, here I thought you were fond of us. *g*
Diner Denizens. Very nice one, Moll.
Did you find the crocs? What are crocs, anyway?
Well, so much better for everyone that you are busy. May it always be so.
morning all
I’ll have a cuppa
That is designed to humiliate and torture people. *spits*
David Swanson minces no words about what happened to JFK.
That, and to give the sadists of the LAPD a chance to get their rocks off.
Barkeep pour that man a drink. Please :)
Morning SD & Pups of Fire:
The complete rundown on how to run The Gubmint…
And Hedges is back…
Truly, I don’t think you will need to force yourself. Wolff is great.
Although the comment numbers aren’t listed with each of the nested comments, at the top of the page, at the end of the post and right before the “tags”, the number of comments is posted. There’s a little comment cloud.
And an important clarification from MTP, albeit a week late.
Oh great! Now I gotta pox on me. And the cold wet miserable day had started soooo weeelll. :-)
Yeah, in those nice Gucci loafers.
Good morning all. Finally, I get to be at the Diner while it’s open! I’m thrilled! I love it SD that you let us know in the post what the topics are about and I also love your welcoming ways. I’d like some hot porridge this morning with a side of steamed leafy greens. Am I testing the limits of what my friendly neighborhood Lakeside Diner serves for breakfast?
I believe him too!
The capitalists/elites did not like what he was about to do to make America better.
Yeah, I know that. But when I’m reading way down at the bottom, and then depart the thread, I only have a vague sense of the comment numbers.
Monday, and you got up? What optimism. Greens on an omelette are my idea of health food.
I have to go Dissent, but for those of you that missed what happened last night on K-Street you can view it here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cd9zGgL6E5c
Like the restaurant at the end of the universe we can serve up anything ya like.
Hey greenwarrior and welcome. Porridge certainly.
Steamed leafy greens. Truly? For breakfast?
Sheesh. You would think Hedges would know better than to drag religion in this discussion. That’s a no-win deal, because religion can be twisted to mean whatever anybody wants it to mean.
And way more cold….my electricity was off when I woke up, but back on. I haven’t heard our extensive the outage may have been…where’s our warm weather?
It’s not an issue about belief. It’s a fact.
I hadn’t thought of the Diner that way….
Slush covering the ground here on the tundra, and I’ve heard one limb fall.
Thank goodness for that little space heater called ‘Angela’ :)
The thing that frustrates the elites the most about OWS is that there isn’t a specific person or persons they can target. Brutalizing OWS as a group has only backfired on them.
I think I’ve figured out what’s missing from the diner. Nature’s most perfect food. heh..
Good morning. msmolly says we are weather wimps. Afraid I agree.
That does drive them batshit, alright. In terms of the propaganda war, however, they’re ramping the DFH angle into overdrive. Assholes.
What are Crocs??? OMG they have been all the rage for the past few years. They’re even uglier than Birkenstocks, if that’s possible. Maybe they’re not worn much in So Cali or something, but people here love them. They started out as clogs with holes in the top, made of a rubbery material called Croslite, but now they’ve morphed to a line of shoes and boots that are worn a lot for comfort.
A sampling of Crocs
I think it will continue to backfire on them. They are a determined bunch. I can’t wait till spring.
Gotsta bail, but here’s an oldie but goody for everyone’s dining and dancing pleasure…
Confession time. I’m almost 60 and I just tried collard greens for the very first time last week. Our newest chef is from Missouri and he fixed some up for us to go with lunch. I liked very much. Who knew? Oh, you Southerns knew, but a white chick from The Valley? I didn’t.
My daughter has a pair and yes are they ugly. I would never tell her that though.
Ouch! you trompled my Birkies. Which used to be really durable, until they got so much attention.
OOOOO, bacon!! Done crisp and crunchy. YUM. I like sausage too, just plain ol’ Bob Evans links.
I like it, but that would help eliminate the voter suppression aspects of the bill. We are a small county population-wise and many have come to see our double-dipping, working on his second government pension republican yes man for what he is. I will be making your suggestion so we can possibly get some work out of him in the last year of his term.
Truly! That’s what I’ll be having for breakfast this morning. I love those tender little baby dinosaur kales steamed for breakfast. I did say kales, not tails. And now that SD will serve them up, that makes my work in the kitchen all that much easier. Yay, Diner!
Congratulations, I think that makes you ‘soul’ -ful. I have them with vinegar, really nice.
Speaking of MMT, anyone seen selise around? She helped me a lot on the MMT stuff.
Also haven’t seen Rayne or Siun around much anymore.Sigh!
Turnip greens is good too.
That, and chocolate, right?
I agree. It shows a great deal of optimism to get out of bed these days! If the PTB keep up the way they’ve been going, soon we’ll all be reduced to hooking up our computers right next to our beds.
I’d never seen the catcerto, only Nora’s solo performances. Thank you!
Hope it works out. Really, there are x-ray machines for the homebound now, no reason not to pull out the cellphone and take pictures.
Popyeye, I’m watching the weather very closely this week. I have a choir concert Friday night, then head to Indianapolis to watch granddaughters dance in the Nutcracker Saturday afternoon, then back home Saturday night so I can be on deck for a neighborhood brunch on Sunday. Fortunately, the only unpleasant weather forecast is cold, and I can deal with that! Last year a big snowstorm came through and I didn’t get to see the girls dance because I couldn’t make the drive.
I saw an article from Siun a few weeks back (I think it was a few weeks). FWIW
Yep, a little vinegar on collard or turnip greens is good.
What is the restaurant at the end of the universe? A reference to something I never knew or have managed to forget or something dangling from the edges of your imagination?
I figured You knew, but maybe some others didn’t.
I looked at the number last night because I was curious.
I live in them, summer (sandals) and winter (suede clogs). Both have gotten pretty disreputable-looking. They last practically forever.
Saves on heating costs. No doubt the Babs Bushes will conclude we’re all ‘better off’.
And using our bikes to power them.
Which isn’t actually a bad idea :)
In case anyone mistrusts the saintliness of pillars of Christianity like Newt Gangrene, think again.
Hey, listen. Even facts can be twisted, skewed, taken out of context.
So, there.
Well the weather changes hourly in Missouri so I wouldn’t worry about the snow. *g*
There ya go…
One of the books in the Hitchhickers Guide to the Galaxy series.
i’ve got a pair in turquoise. another in pink. and another in red. i love them. they are so comfortable. ugly be damned!
Shit, that’s nothin’ new.
We are, we are…Any cold weather is too much for me. Martha Stewart on my news…enough to send me back to bed.
Morning All….
Actually, mine are a brand called Holey’s. They differ in that they’re cut narrower which suit my feet better.
Morning Rev Bev and Oldnslow. Hope you are doin good for a Monday. Good to see you both here.
Jane got onto Selise about a comment she made and was pretty hard on her, and I think she left. Dunno about Rayne. Siun is still on some of the late threads, I think.
It’s still funny as hell.
Morning, Bev.
I keep forgetting to ask you something. Are you the person who suggested that I read Sarah’s Key? ‘Cause I did, and it was another hard look at WWII, but I learned somethings I didn’t know before.
Stay warm and dry, if you can.
That’s what I say about my Birkies. LOL. But I haven’t managed to find a pair of Crocs that are really comfy, so I don’t have any. My daughter and her two girls live in them.
Morning ’99. We are both cold. High in the low 40s today. Not our kind of weather.
I hear ya the cold is pretty rough on me as well. Sometimes worse than heat. Oh and btw I used your link to the LA protester in my diary hope you don’t mind. I am still disturbed about it.
Christmas Goat in Gävle has been burned down even though huge numbers of webcams were trained on it.
That is fabulous!
The growing list of sites where posting a comment critical of Obysmal will get you flagged as a Neocon troll.
- HuffPost
- RawStory
- ThinkProgress
- DailyKos
Anyone care to add to the list?
And she was on a couple of threads on yesterday…can’t recall specifics.
I don’t know the science behind it, but our bodies really do adapt to the climate we’re in. I go to visit my sister in northern CA, usually in the fall but last year in January. She’s wearing a jacket and jeans, and I’m wearing summer gear. She also seems to mind the heat more than I do, probably because northern CA is more evenly moderate, not too cold, not too hot.
I am glad I only read and post here. :)
I hope you have forgiven me for being such a fashion rage nerd.
But, my question did encourage a conversation about chooz.
I suppose if I had a daughter with children within driving range, I’d be more up on rages. But, for now, I’ll stay blissful in my ignorance.
At the rate of speed they put up posts here it’s a wonder I can keep up at all.
Wouldn’t have any idea, and couldn’t care less.
GOL. (Guffaw out loud). I hadn’t heard Newt Gangrene before.

Probably ….I loved the book, the way it was structured. I saw the movie that was also quite good. But the structure harder to follow…almost impossible if you hadn’t read the book, I would think. Glad you read it.
Could you post the link of the comment made by selise that got Jane riled? Curious minds would like to know.
Over 2 in. of rain that we really needed.
definitely not our kind of weather. especially when combined with damp. not that i am complaining about the recent rains. i have been celebrating them mightily. i’m just not real excited about going further outside today than i’ve already been (the doormat where the paper lands in the morning).
Thanks. I’ll probably pass on the movie then. Only so much time in a day.
It’s a cruel world out there. ThinkProgress and RawStory are funny though. Even though you may get bounced from their systems because of “offensive” comments, the do eventually let you back in. Don’t ask my what the rules for that are, cause I don’t have a clue.
Wolff is very easy to listen to. He speaks in sentences and paragraphs, no ums, ers, Imeans, youknows, uhs etc. But where is the very next video after the one linked to? (part 2 of the first 6)
I prolly wouldn’t know about Crocs either, if it weren’t for my daughter. I know men wear them, but my grandsons mock their sister and cousins for wearing Crocs. Although I’ve read that they aren’t really good for the feet, a lot of people in professions that require being on one’s feet swear by them. I think they first caught on among nurses and health care workers.
Damn! Julbocks are tradition in every Swedish home. I have 7 of them in sizes from hip high to not much bigger than your hand. Makes me sad someone did that!
The Jul Tomte will not be pleased.
Thanks, I wondered what all the pain was about.
Now about to go do things, checked what fell last night, and it sounded bigger than it was. Time to pick the last few roses, out there in the slush – but not freezing yet.
We desperately need rain. But cold and damp at 5:45 in the morning is not my idea of a pleasant way to start the day. I suppose I could be rejoicing because winter’s almost over…..wait… what?
I would have no idea where to find it now. It had something to do with the members-only webinars and Selise used a “gated community” reference. In context I thought it was pretty innocuous, but Jane really took offense at the implication that FDL was creating elite communities. Coming on the heels of a LOT of work by the FDL techs and backstage crew, it just hit Jane wrong and she was pretty harsh.
Have a great day Ruth. Stay warm and dry and hope there wasn’t any damage.
Hold on a sec, let me get to my bookmarks…
I had the wrong link in the post. Go back up to the post and use the Session 1 link again. That should be an autoplay link and part 2 will play after part 1 ends. Right link now, it works.
Thanks, no damage, made a loud thump is all. Dead wood does that.
i’ve got to go out sometime today or tomorrow before it freezes and put the condoms on my outside faucets.
Well I am off to swim (in a pool) have a great day all. Will check back for lunch.
Thanks, I had several links..
Thanks molly. Seems like an unfortunate misunderstanding. I like them both, so it’s sad when things like that happen.
I dread the freeze part.
Yeah, me too and used the wrong one. Duh. Woulda sworn it worked last evening when I tested it.
It’s allowed. :)
During the Health Care debates there were some bruised feelings here. Selise was, and I’m sure still is, a very strong voice for single payer. I believe there was some residual damage left over from that. I miss selise. And have been worried about Rayne.
Seems somehow unfair that you got all that horrible over 100 degrees this summer and you have to endure freezing too.
I like my more fairly moderate weather here. I’m going to have to water the yard today. I noticed there are three more tomatoes growing and some more of those promising yellow flowers, so I want to encourage that plant as much as I can.
I really miss selise too. She puts a lot of energy into the right places.
Ditto. Me too, and also. (I haven’t gotten to use that recently, you betcha. And, yes, I’m winkin at ya.)
That’s the problem with these virtual communities. When someone drops out of the picture, there is usually no way to find out what happened.
One of the problems caused by absence of facial expression and tone of voice when communicating electronically. I’ve run into it before. Face to face it might not have been so bad, but without the visual and auditory cues it is awfully easy to misunderstand the words on the page.
Edit to add: I think that’s why we use *g* and *G* and /s around here, to make it clear when a comment is intended gently or humorously.
Thanks for that. You manage to make me smile just about every day.
Mornng SD and the pups. Just want to drop in at the diner congratulate everyone on two exceptionally fine book salonsn this weekend. FDL at its best.
SD, I hope you know I’m sending much fondness your way.
Glad and proud to be your friend.
how lovely and fortunate (or smart) you are to be living in such a nice climate.
Oh, I don’t know. Face to face we coulda had a real cat fight. Hair a’flying and nails and such. I hear some guys like that sorta thing.
Just kidding, you know. (Big grin)
I’m with you. Electronic communication has its limitations.
I’m sure it’s a combination of stuff. Lucky that I was born here. Never wanted to move away from where my pop lived. He’s gone now, but at this point, I’m not feeling too motivated to move anywhere. Couldn’t afford to even if I wanted to.
It is actually something I’ve thought about. How would I break the news here if something were to happen to my partner. Or her me. Those of us that have been here for a long time have been through life altering events together (virtually) and hurt for one another when things go poorly or people vanish. That said, you are correct that it is one of the more challenging aspects of this type of community.
One last sip of coffee. OK (I mean, ok), slurp.

The James Wolcott thread was a lot of fun.
I learned to be very careful during my career in info tech, with extensive use of email. If I was sending an important email, or an email to an “important” person, I reread it several times and made very sure the wording was precise and not subject to misinterpretation.
On a blog it’s important to be clear to whom you are directing a comment. Easy to get into trouble there, too. FDL’ers are a pretty polite bunch, mostly, and even obvious trolls aren’t treated too harshly.
I’m out, too. Headed for the shower, a couple of phone calls, some errands. Have a great day everyone.
Here is where the fight occurred. See comment #147.

Will you workout for me too?
I’ve gotten so bad. I should look up some workout videos on cable.
Maybe today’s the day.
Take care of your dear sweet self today, Om. Much fondness sent to you too.
(((Molly)))
It’s right up there with the other couple of scariest thoughts, I know. But, it does help to have community support when there’s a big change and I hope you know that I have only extreme good feelings for all y’all.
{{{demi}}}
Oh, I remember that thread. Not one of our prouder moments.
I’d thank old gold for posting that link, but it would have been okay for us to let that dog rest.
Maybe lifting each other up is better than reminding us of where we have been and what was said.
Everyone has bad days, ya know.
Thanks oldgold.
Agreed.
My fellow Iowan “old gold” never forgets anything.*G*
I bet he/she is still mad that I supported Edwards in ’08. *g*
Went back to take a look. Not pleasant, but I remember that there was a fair amount of that in those days. I got banned during that contentious period, and it was very hurtful to me, as I was heavily invested in this community. I will say, though, that things are clearly different and better now. The cohesiveness now is very apparent. And Jane will always be a hero to me, what she’s done is amazing, so if she needs to show her sharp elbows occasionally, I can live with it. Frankly, I’m glad she has sharp elbows, because sometimes they are needed. Sometimes, mine are, too, for that matter lol.
In my view this is between Jane and selise. If some really need to inject themselves into it knock yourselves out but do it somewhere else.
SD, can you see when we are lurking around the Diner? I mean, just like clicking and refreshing to see new comments? I am paranoid now.
Yes, I mean no, I did not go to the “Y” and wasn’t sure if I needed to rat myself out or if you already knew….
I need an intervention.
There’s no way I know of to know if somebody is lurking. Unless somebody makes a comment I never know they’re out there.
I agree. That’s why I didn’t attempt to find the link to the incident. It isn’t our business, and it’s long over, so no point resurrecting it. Let’s put the past IN the past. (Not that I apply that to war criminals like Bush & Cheney, or to the banksters.)
Thank Goodness. ;-)
This is a re-post from Cynthia Kouril’s post yesterday, because I think it’s important for non-traders to understand the magnitude of the actual gift that was handed to the banks.

Thanks Cynthia, for this and especially for your earlier brilliant work uncovering the seriousness of the fraudulent mortgage issues. I am a recovering lawyer, ;-), but primarily an S&P futures trader the last couple of decades. When the market bottomed out in 2009, I nailed the bottom, buying at 666.00 on a Friday afternoon, with an actual low of 665.70, and predicted that very weekend a market recovery to S&P 1,100-1,200, a prediction I communicated by email to the people I was advising at the time. I based that call on my own proprietary predictive methods, which are VERY different than what most Wall Streeters use. My point is, the real scandal re the secret magnitude of the bailouts seems to me to be that the banks, who are also TRADERS on a mammoth scale, had the advantage at that time of KNOWING about all that secret liquidity, and so had a better chance to expect and act on the expectation that there would be a massive market upmove resulting. In fact, because the liquidity injections were so massive, the market exceeeded my expectations, and went all the way to S&P 1,373. If you want to figure the amount of the gift the Fed gave the banks, common sense would dictate that you must include the value of the trading gains in the stock market. Thousands of times the $12 billion dollar figure, I would argue.
But I guess honesty is always the best policy :)
I haven’t been out of this chair all morning. I.am.a.slug.
Heh, I know when you’re lurking. I’ve got a webcam in yer sewing room. Give Cooper, Ki-Ke and Rosie some love for me.
Will do.
If I come back as a cat, I want Janis to introduce me to Cooper.
All I did is switch locations.
speechless. for a change.
Actually, I just now showed up and was scanning the conversation. WAY too early in the morning for me to contribute. Think I’ll just keep on lurking…or whatever…but if you see a strange nonsensical post from me, someone should maybe give me a call and tell me to get my head off the keyboard.
LOL! (Janis) and here is a virtual cup of coffee!
Dang. I overslept!
GM , anyone still left reading here. This is just a flyby for today.
Usually, I am told to get my head out of somewhere else!
Hmmmm…..
You two, keep your heads!
I’ve really got to go, this time.
(For all any of you know)
Heady subject for so early in the mornin’.
Have a good day, Ali.
I have men watching you at all times, sweet thong. (Oh, was that a typo? Only the Shadow knows . . . lol.)
Heh. My laptop has a built-in camera, so it could tattle on me anytime.
I eschew such niceties. Along with thistles!
“Thisties”???
Oops. Misread. You typed “thistles.” I still don’t quite get it.
rc. Yes, typo I am sure. I’m giving you a virtual ‘look’ over the rim of my glasses.
Collar correction is the next step.
Ah, an obscure reference to something I believe was written by John Updike.
See? I am also writing nonsense this morning!
Anyone wanting a good read should toddle over to Charles Pierce’s column this morning and count how many times he calls Scott Walker a “walking pustulation.”
LOL! I thought you wrote “color correction!
Better use one of those with the inward-facing spikes, darlin’. I’m notoriously difficult to train. ;-)
You are reading between the lines :)
The ‘color’ correction comes after the strangulation has abated :)
So did Updike, mostly. Never “got” him either, and I have a suspicion I missed something.
OK pupses, I am off on my errands. Target, here I come! UGH.
Be careful in all the crazy that is out there.
That’s why I used his expression!
Very late…..Does anyone have ideas for a lovely gift for kitty? She is so peaceful this morning, I think she is expecting something for good behavior. What might she love and maybe tear up? Ideas?
Blue is my favorite color.
I’ve probably missed you, but an empty paper bag and some playful scratches and taps on it by you would probably be received with great delight by Angela.
A rousing game of string might be the ticket unless she insists on a food treat. In that case, a tad of salmon or sardines will meet with approval.
Paper bag with a sprinkling of catnip inside. Nothin’ wrong with Angela gettin’ a buzz on, she’s not gonna drive anywhere.
This is the first cracked mug, and I didn’t drop it. It says: User Is Asleep.
Well, that explains it :)

Well, this is an ongoing discussion, I see.
I thought of catnip as well, but then I went and made breakfast instead. Onions, potatoes garlic and scrambled eggs. A little pepper and thyme on the potatoes and that’s all she wrote!
Not for the cat, foe moi and my SO!
That sounds so good. My new DIL made a potato pie with fresh thyme and dill for Thanksgiving. I’ve always paired potatos and dill, but never thyme, and it is a wonderful combination. Like rosemary and corn, yum.
Mugs washed and dried….just hang up the tea towels…..Bob’s your uncle.
I cook by the sniff test. Something is cooking and needs help. Open bottles of herbs, spiced etc and sniff while lingering over the dish in question. That’s how I discovered that potatoes and thyme have a love affair with each other.
Of course, it is always wise when, after paring down the possibilities, one actually does a taste test. I did that last week with a risotto dish in which I had added some Madeira. I thought maybe marinated artichoke hearts might be an interesting addition but then actually tasted them together and… absolutely not!…for this dish. But I will experiment with it from scratch. It wasn’t offensive but rather novel.
I’m so jealous of you East Coasters getting all the Lakeside Diner fun.
Hey, ysd, join the party! I’m from
wierdsvillePortlandGee, after reading that, I think I’ll just stick to your famously wonderful and pricey coffee. ;-)
Why opt for extra sleep if you’re just gonna have nightmares about missing the morning party lol?
Ultimately, it’s all good.
Trust me!
Thanks all…great ideas…She will be such a contented cat….not that she may move any more quickly, of course….;) We both love y’allll.
Extra sleep, indeed. I’m a mom, so I was prolly up before you chatterboxes. I just have to spend my early hours wiping noses and making lunches. *sigh*
“Trust me.” Where have I heard that before . . .
Now I feel bad cuz I missed out on the nose-wiping.
I’m sure. Every non parent misses the joys of that.
*snort*
You question my sincerity? Well, I never . . .lol. ‘Snot my habit to be insincere.
Aaarrgghhh! Don’t let me be last!
You’re not. Gee, I peeked in and found a discussion of snot noses. Think I’ll pass…even my grandkids are mostly past the nose-wiping ages.
And, not only that, but hello, who lives on the west coast and makes it to most of the mornings.
Hell, ya’d almost think people don’t read the comments.
You guys crack me up. I am always in a good mood after visiting the diner and Caturday. *g*
