Late Night FDL: Joe Paterno for Pope

By: Allison Hantschel Monday November 7, 2011 8:00 pm

You are never going to be able to get rid of all sick people ever. These people find kids to victimize like that is their job. So absent a science fiction vaccine that wipes out whatever wiring flaw in people’s minds as makes them do this, what you have to have is an oversight structure with its eyes on the prize. The prize isn’t the football coach’s reputation, or the university president’s, or the football team’s, or the town’s. The prize isn’t keeping everybody quiet so that nobody at Sports Illustrated has to write anything awkward. The prize isn’t letting Joe Paterno retire quietly as a legend because legacy and winning and blah blah blah.

Americans Want Bigger Role for Government in Health Care

By: Jon Walker Monday November 7, 2011 7:15 pm

While Americans claim they prefer smaller government, they prefer a bigger government that provides more health care services according to a new poll by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Only 37 percent of Americans would prefer a smaller government that provided fewer health services, while a majority, 52 percent, said they would prefer a larger government that provided more health services.

Life Under Occupation (Occupy Austin Flash Mob)

By: Kit OConnell Monday November 7, 2011 6:30 pm

Visiting an Occupation, even a relatively small one like ours, is a little surreal. The energy is so heated. There’s so much passion, energy, even anger. Then you step away and realize the world continues as normal. Despite the global nature of this movement, people everywhere are living life; Re-entry is jarring when one steps from any temporary encampment to the bright lights of a grocery store.

FDL Movie Night: “The Revenge of the Electric Car”

By: Lisa Derrick Monday November 7, 2011 5:00 pm

It’s baaaack! The electric car is charging its way onto the freeways and Chris Paine, our guest tonight, documents the vehicle’s resurrection by GM (who killed off the EV1), Nissan and Tesla along with Reverend Gadget aka Greg Abbott’s retro-fitted electric cars which use the bodies of Boxters and other sports cars to house rechargeable batteries. In Revenge of the Electric Car, Paine takes us through the death of the EV1 to the return of the electric car, spurred as much by public demand as by rising gas costs, corporate rivalry, and in some cases the creators’ desire to redeem themselves or to be heroes.

Census’ Alternative Poverty Statistics Prove Elderly Benefits Are Too Meager

By: David Dayen Monday November 7, 2011 3:33 pm

The Census Bureau’s revised way of measuring poverty takes into account changing costs and the offsetting effects of support programs. Importantly, it reveals that rising drug costs and health have left millions more seniors in poverty that previously thought.

Scandals Haven’t Hurt Cain in the Polls…Yet

By: Jon Walker Monday November 7, 2011 2:50 pm

A new Gallup poll taken after news of his alleged sexual harassment history broke shows he is still tied at the top with Mitt Romney. Apparently, the scandals haven’t yet hurt his standing, possibly because over 50 percent of Republicans tend to disbelieve the charges.

Romney’s Plan to Break Up Medicare

By: David Dayen Monday November 7, 2011 2:10 pm

Mitt Romney’s Medicare “reform” proposal is a takeoff on Paul Ryan’s voucher flim flam, shifting costs to more seniors and raising average costs for everyone. He claims to provide more choice, but seniors can already choose between straight Medicare and private insurance Medicare Advantage.
