Crude Awakening explains the growing pains and tribulations of a new state coming of age in the modern era – a state of wilderness, and Sourdoughs, thousands of years of Native culture, fishermen, prospectors and pioneers, brilliant minds and brave souls writing their own Constitution. In some ways comparable to the spirit of newness, hope and optimism of Philadelphia in the 1830s, Alaska’s coming out party had a darker and more raucous side.

Makana Occupies APEC |
| By: profmarcus Sunday November 13, 2011 1:10 pm |
How often does someone from the occupy movement get to deliver a thoughtful protest in front of a gathering of world leaders in what was, at least last night, probably one of the most highly-guarded spots on the entire planet? What an amazing triumph!
Euro Crises Need More than One Size Fits All |
| By: Scarecrow Sunday November 13, 2011 12:20 pm |
Another front page article in today’s New York Times attempts to explain why the economic and financial crises in the Euro nations are not resolved. Like too many US media discussions, it skips between several issues, related to be sure, but without sorting out which set of facts goes with which issue. These connections matter.
Police Clear Out Occupy Denver |
| By: Eclair Sunday November 13, 2011 11:30 am |
The noon sun warmed the crowd of Saturday marchers who paraded through downtown Denver today, rallying against the idea of “corporate personhood.” The people were peaceful in spite of a small altercation that erupted in front of the Federal Reserve Bank. But the protesters immediately began to chant, “Peace, peace peace,” and sat down in the street in order to defuse the situation.
But, by late afternoon, in the park in front of the State Capitol, and filling the Lincoln Avenue for the whole block south of 14th Street, about 20 police vehicles, police in riot gear, mounted and motorcycle police, began to gather. Yellow tape cordoned off the area.

Brief Note from Nashville on the Soul |
| By: Glenn W. Smith Sunday November 13, 2011 9:30 am |
I was in Nashville last night for a speech today, and lucky for me it was a night that Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell and Vince Gill were playing a benefit concert for the Epilepsy Foundation. I took a cab to the Mercy Lounge, bought a ticket, and listened as America poured itself into our soul.
Arab League Suspends Syria |
| By: David Dayen Sunday November 13, 2011 8:37 am |
The action by the collection of Arab states against the Syrian regime followed a so-called peace agreement that the Arab League brokered with Bashar al-Assad, which was supposed to end violence by security forces. However, a day after agreeing to the peace deal, Syrian security killed 10 protesters, and since that time Syria has continued to lay waste to the country, killing 250 protesters in 11 days.
Thank God for Herman Cain |

It is said that God works in mysterious ways, and some may believe She has a fine, if not wicked sense of humor. It’s also said that God cannot be mocked. Or perhaps it’s all bunk and the joke is on us. Whatever, Herman Cain just told his supporters that God told him to run for President.
Live Blog for #Occupy Movement: Day 57, Occupy Portland Survives Night but Still Faces Eviction |
| By: Kevin Gosztola Sunday November 13, 2011 6:45 am |
Condescendingly, Mayor Adams told The Oregonian “from the beginning, his personal view was that the Occupy movement would have to evolve to realize its future potential.” He stated, “My hope is it will flourish in its next phase … with a focus on economic justice, not Port-a-Potties and tents.”

Occupy Montgomery!
Fifty five years ago today the Supreme Court of the United States of America upheld the decision of the Federal District Court for the Middle District of Alabama “that Alabama’s racial segregation laws for buses were unconstitutional.” It was only just the beginning of the civil rights movement. Only the beginning. So keep on keeping on Occupy, we have only just begun to fight.
