Live Blog for #Occupy Movement: Occupy Oakland Sets Up a New Camp

By: Kevin Gosztola Sunday November 20, 2011 7:49 am

In the freezing cold rain and under threat of an immediate crackdown by the Oakland Police Department to remove them if they tried to re-establish their occupation, Occupy Oakland setup a new camp site at 19th & Telegraph.

Occupy Oakland organizers reported regaining “momentum” as a number of actions with “visible union support” took place as many took to the streets again. They added ”as of 6 pm [Occupy Oakland was] celebrating in a liberated vacant lot at 19th and Telegraph to the sounds of hip hop, drumming, dance music and marching bands. Some neighbors in the Uptown development welcomed the arrival with signs of support and danced in their balconies. Police quickly withdrew to the perimeter when the thousands of protestors arrived.”

Your RW Relative, “They Never Had to Gas Tea Partiers!”

By: spocko Sunday November 20, 2011 6:45 am

I’ll bet you 10 quatloos that if you eat Thanksgiving dinner with right wing relatives one or more will make the baiting comment, “You know, the police never had to use tear gas on the tea partiers.”

Happy morning, who’s got the syrup?

Here’s Rachel Maddow on the monies of Newt Gingrich, Palin was a piker in comparison (h/t TRex). And if you’re hankering for more Republican awesomey goodness, watch the Iowa Thanksgiving Family Forum debate. Frank Luntz was the moderator so you know it’s tasty delicious. Unfortunately, for some reason Mitt had to wash his hair so he missed it.

If you see any coverage of Occupy on the shows, let us know.

Occupy: First They Laugh at You, Then They Lie About You…

By: Phoenix Woman Saturday November 19, 2011 8:00 pm

So I was getting all ready to enumerate the various Occupy sites that weren’t on national TV because they weren’t being harassed by the mayors or the cops and then a whole bunch of other stuff came up.

Spin This

If you are a lobbying firm that sent out a proposal describing how you will do “opposition research” designed to create “negative narratives” about the occupy movement for a cool $850,000 and then your memo ends up on the front page of MSNBC.com as well as on the teevee and this all happens on the same day that the other big national story is a bunch of occupy students being hosed down with pepper spray by Chubby McCampuscop …. well, you kind of suck at your job.

OccupySupply and UPS Shipping Issues…Hello FedEx

We’re getting one report after another from local FDL Member liaisons on how critically supplies are needed. From OccupyLouisville, Patty C says “I was there when one of the hats and pair of socks was given to a homeless man who had been there since day one. He told me that it was the 1st pair of socks he’s worn for a long, long time.” At OccupyPittsburg, RFShunt said supplies were immediately taken to the medical tent and given to people who were suffering from exposure.

Seif al-Islam el-Gadhafi, the son of the former dictator and the most recognizable living face of the old Libyan regime, was captured by Libyan militia fighters today in the southwestern desert, where he was apparently attempting to cross the border.

The Party Line – November 18 (uh, 19), 2011: Show a Gun, Gotta Use It

When I heard Jean Quan offhandedly drop that she was on a multi-mayor conference call during a BBC interview, I knew I had heard something of note. The rapid succession of similar crackdowns on Occupy encampments in several US cities seemed like more than a coincidence, and so it was kind of a smoking gun.

FDL Book Salon Welcomes Morris Berman, Why America Failed: The Roots of Imperial Decline

By: Ian Welsh Saturday November 19, 2011 1:59 pm

One might note that the high point of American power (absolute as opposed to relative, after the collapse of the USSR) coincides with peak of oil production in the US, and that the sudden rise in American pathologies coincides fairly closely with the oil crises of the 70s and early 80s, for example. Hustling, eternal growth, works when cheap energy is readily available, when more, more, more is possible, and when growth is choked, the hustlers, rather than growing the pie, turn on each other in a vicious “war of all against all”.
