Blanket the Earth: An Idea to Use Black Friday to Help OWS

By: rudepundit Tuesday November 22, 2011 8:30 am

Over at my blog, I’ve been talking up an idea and action, and I’d love to get FDLers involved to help: On Friday, November 25, the day after Thanksgiving, Black Friday, the biggest shopping day of the year, let’s give to our local Occupy encampments what they need to stay warm for the winter. This is different than FDL’s Occupy Supply because it’s about those of us not occupying parks and other areas showing up at OWS sites to give aid and comfort.

Newt Gingrich Would Beat Mitt Romney in Head to Head Match Up

By: Jon Walker Tuesday November 22, 2011 8:00 am

Another major national poll by Quinnipiac found that Newt Gingrich leads among national Republican and Republican leaning independents with 26 percent of the vote followed by Mitt Romney at 22 percent and Herman Cain at 14 percent. Gingrich would also beat Romney in a head to head match up.

Why Were Expiring Stimulus Measures Expected to Pass in Super Committee?

By: David Dayen Tuesday November 22, 2011 7:15 am

For some reason, lots of commentators are making a major assumption that cannot be proven, claiming that any Super Committee deal would have included extensions of expiring stimulus measures like unemployment benefits and the payroll tax cut. You Pick: Most Mind-Numbing GOP Clown Car Item of the Day

By: Pam Spaulding Tuesday November 22, 2011 6:30 am

The GOP Prez candidates continue to astonish. I can’t decide which one of these items is more mind-numbing, but I’ve not seen such a pathetic bunch of pols running for President of the United States in years, maybe ever.

I’m not sure how much I love it when this plan comes together. [A]ccording to [a] Fairleigh Dickinson University’s latest PublicMind poll…“there is something about watching Fox News that leads people to do worse on these questions than those who don’t watch any news at all” FoxNews worse than ignorance, it’s not just opinion, it’s [...]

Late Night FDL: Hating Twilight = Hating Women

By: Allison Hantschel Monday November 21, 2011 8:00 pm

There is nothing romantic about a relationship in which you have to sublimate everything you are in order to be with someone else. There is nothing romantic about misery and despair and pain and being vaguely afraid of somebody you live with. Yes, when you’re a teenager things like that seem romantic, because sadness is powerful and anyway everybody at 15 is like a squirrel in a paint can anyway, but there’s a reason we grow out of that, or should.

The Radical History of Bloomington’s Peoples Park

By: John Sherman Monday November 21, 2011 7:15 pm

In the autumn of 1968, Rollo Turner opened the Black Market in Bloomington, Indiana on land owned by businessman and antiwar activist Larry Canada. Located on the corner of Dunn Street and Kirkwood Avenue, the Black Market sold LPs, books, artwork, and African imports, and quickly evolved into a peaceful gathering place for Bloomington and Indiana University’s African-American community. In May of 1969 Turner would gain fame for leading a coalition of students and faculty in an occupation of IU’s Ballantine Hall to protest tuition increases…
