The coffee’s freshly ground, there’s a wide selection of teas and the sticky buns are homemade.
- Rupert may have lost out on adding BSkyB to his stable but he’s still gonna control the company. Controlling a plurality of shares will do that for ya, I guess. “James Murdoch has been re-elected BSkyB chairman, but a fifth of shareholders voted against his reappointment.”
- “European finance ministers were warned on Tuesday night that Italy’s liquidity crisis could leave the eurozone’s third biggest economy insolvent with devastating impact on the fate of the single currency and its big core economies, Germany and France.” Does that mean I’m gonna be able to buy a pair of Italian leather shoes for 20 bucks?

- A blast from the past, 1929 to be exact. The 14th edition of Encyclopedia Britannica contained an article on Guerrilla Warfare by none other than T E Lawrence. You know who he was, right? Anyhow, it seems the Arabs and Afghans of the 21st century paid more attention to him than did the chorus line of US Army generals we sent over to fight the terrists.
- What’s this situation like where you live? “About 300 female veterans are homeless in Hillsborough County. About 20 percent of women screened at Veterans Affairs facilities report sexual trauma. Florida has the third-largest number of female vets, with about 140,000.”
Question. How ironic is it that Standard and Poor’s has downgraded some of the biggest banks that peddled the shitpile that was enthusiastically rated as AAA by Standard and Poor’s and other rating agencies?

About Firedoglake
Morning, SD.
BTW, I searched for a vintage postcard of an old St. Pete’s Beach diner that had been torn down. Came up with a few. If a pic exists, it would be on a vintage postcard.
The old postcards with renditions of early diners are terrific.
Thanks, SD, seems I see increasing numbers of families just hanging around town, and suspect they are homeless.
November 30, 2011. Amerika’s Kristallnacht?
Mornin’, pups
Thanks for all the birthday greetings and wishes yesterday. Muchly appreciated.
Today it’s oldnslow’s turn. Happy Birthday, oldnslow.
It’s also the birthday of Winston Churchill (1874) and Abbie Hoffman (1936).
Happy B-Day, O&S.
Good morning SoDrag and pups.
Thanks for the post Dragonman.
Happy B’Day, oldnslow. Hope all good things come all your ways. To all.
Thanks bro.
Thanks ‘buzz.
Thanks Ruth.
My pleasure. You’re in good company.
Good morning.
If you still have a job.
Don’t know what I’d do with ‘em anyhoo. All I wear is Converse Chuck Taylor All-Star hightops. It’s either barefoot or me Chucks. But I still gotz a job.
Happy Birthday, oldnslow. Hope someone is buying you a fancy dinner today. Someone said it’s Sharkbabe’s birthday today, too.
I’m also seeing a lot of people standing at major intersections holding crude signs on a piece of cardboard that read something like, “Two kids at home. Need help. God Bless.” I saw them last winter too, sometimes standing for hours in the worst weather, but then they mostly disappeared in the summer. I’ve been wondering if they found some sort of summer work but now are again unemployed. I can’t possibly give something to every one I see, but I’d like to.
That’s not a good look with shorts — but who cares. LOL
Good Morning to SD and all,
‘Specially big long birthday hug to oldnslow. I’d post a link to a cake, but I’m intimidated by your lovely wife’s talen. *g*
In St Pete and Tampa it’s now illegal to panhandle along roads. They’ll criminalize being unemployed next.
Happy Birthday O%S hope you have many more. Sorry don’t have your email or I would have sent a card.
I worked near LBJ freeway in Dallas at one time, and saw a van delivering that sort of crew in the mornings sometimes.
Huh? Nothin’ looks better with shorts than Chucks.
Oh, but it is a great look. For females, cowgirl boots and shorts.
Thanks msmolly and demi.
CBL did make a cake. Maybe she will put up a picture.
I’ll wait to see but I’m guessing it’s something with two wheels.
Now your talkin. *g*
Grab your ankles folks: another bailout is coming.
I just downloaded the droid app for my android thanks for the tip
I’ve been channel changing for the last half hour between all the local channels that are covering the Occupy LA raid. 200 arrests. Mostly no violence. No sprays. A bean bag shot at protesters who were staying in a tree house that they made and two protesters taken down to the groud, who were violently resisting arrest.
I haven’t watched local news for a really long time.
Thanks ’99
I saw an article yesterday that O is going to bail out Europe.
http://rt.com/usa/news/obama-bail-eu-425/
Happy birthday, Oldnslow.
I’m going to have to look in the iPhone app store to see if it’s there. I also have an iPhone app for sustainable seafood.
We were supposed to get 2 – 5 inches of snow overnight, but nary a flake. It was rainy and miserable all day yesterday, but the sun is out this morning so I’m not complaining about the reprieve.
Heard a CNN report that ‘obviously’ the resistance showed that those occupiers ‘wanted to be arrested’.
http://uk.reuters.com/article/2011/11/30/climate-banks-idUKL5E7MT6DU20111130
The Bankster death grip on the world must be broken now.
First comment to the article gets it exactly right:
Good morning pupses and thank you, SD.
Happy Birthday, oldnslow! Wishing you many more happy and healthy ones. Almost wrote hippy and healthy :) Yes, wishing you that, too!
I overslept and am desperately seeking coffee…
LA and Philly performed a stunning duet last night.
Good morning all,
Hot cuppa black please.
I heard something about that yesterday. Thanks for the link.
Wow. Thanks Scarecrow!
Here’s something to cheer you up — from Naked Capitalism.
CNN would have also frowned on those unsporting folk who wouldn’t parade into the gas chambers peacefully.
Thanks Om.
(slidin a steaming hot cuppa your way)
This is total insanity. RT has an article about drones about to be patrolling the U.S. skies. Fascism is almost total. I wish I could move somewhere else but there is no place to go. Our tentacles are everywhere.
The guys in the tree house are part of a group that calls themselves the Soverign Nation. A reporter was talking to a protester who was explaining that those protesters were claiming the tree house as their nation, that one of them was a lawyer and that after they were arrested, there would be a legal battle. The reporter said, Oh no, that won’t happen. It was weird. How does he know what’s in the minds of the protesters and how does he know they won’t bring a legal action against the city?
No EuroBailout! No EuroTARP!
Call your Congresspeople and scream about bailouts just like a TeaPartier. Don’t assume it is useless because this is an issue with resonance across the political spectrum. Call and make your opinions known. It’s the least we can do.
You are a good and kind man, thanks :)
Ah, nuts.
(But, I didn’t really need cheering up. I’m fine.)
Good morning, SD. Good morning, pups. Congrats on taking over the morning slot from BT – really nice.
Happy belated b-day, and happy birthday, oldnslow.
Been watching the livestream of Occupy LA at Kevin’s live blog, it just ended. Sad to see what the cops did, just ripping things apart like that, the destruction of a community.
The Euro-bailout will occur behind closed doors. It will take us months to find out how much was involved — just like it took us months to find out that trillions of dollars were given to TBTF banks.
For those who had been a fan of Sheldon Whitehouse, note that he is out in front clearing the way for fascism.
Good morning, all you freedom-and-coffee lovers. Happy Birthday to oldnslow and sharkbabe.
The world’s central banks just executed an extraordinary coordinated easing move during the overnight markets. For any who follow my market calls, there is no operative call as of this moment. This move obviated an earlier sell target which will certainly be reached and surpassed when trading begins today.
And praised the cleanliness of the quarters.
Hey, ghosty is being all poetical this morning. *g*
Love the squirrel. Got him a pile of nuts for winter, doesn’t he?
How Class Works.
Wolff also has a series of lectures on Marxist economics on his site.
democracynow segment on attacks on OccupyLA.
Aww, cute.
How about some targeted protests against the Wall Street scumbags focused on specific issues like this? We must bring the 99-1 message home in concrete ways to energize the American People. Global warming doesn’t get everybody but it gets a lot of people. The idea of those bloodsucking parasites funding coal plants makes me want to puke.
Strange. Reporters are usually not forwarding their own reactions on to the viewers, is this a wingnut channel?
Newt is challenging O to reject OWS.
I sent my congressman and senator letters and called them when we were going thru the debt deal. When they were discussing cutting SS and Medicare. I filled out all the paperwork they required to meet with them and all I heard was crickets. I am pretty sure it is a useless exercise. I wish I had a voice but I don’t.
That only happens because we let it happen. Sad but true.
Yep saw that yesterday. But IMHO Fascism is already here and has been under the radar for the past 50-60 years. If you have the time read “The Nazi Hydra in America” eyeopening history of our country.
Apparently, part of the agreement to be included in the “embedded” team of reporters is that “confidential” information shared with them will not be released without permission. It was noted in Kevin’s liveblog
I don’t remember which channel it was, local ABC, I think. Local news shows are pretty silly. They kept going on and on about how LAPD had closed down streets and off ramps and how that was going to make it difficult for workers to get into downtown LA. But, they also said that the ramps would probably be open by 5 am, so I don’t see what the problem is. They just have verbal diarrhea syndrome. Blah, blah…
I understand. I did the same. I was on the phone numerous times and it mattered nothing. But that was then and this is now. WE have had the Tea Party and OWS. Both the Left and the Right are very sensitive to bank bailouts now and so are the politicians. I think they can be moved. In any case, how much does it cost to try?
Even more than a protest over plutocratic domination of the economy, Occupy has now become a titanic struggle over the continued existence of First Amendment freedoms. The PTB’s stealth, gradualistic effort to exterminate those freedoms has now been exposed for all to see. Truly, the Occupy movement has now touched the revolutionary foundations of this country.
Yup! No public pooping was tolerated at Dachau!
Happy Birthday, O&S!
Bofa closed at 5.08 yesterday, darn near it’s lowest close. Unsustainable, IMO. It’s up to 5.36 right now in pre-open trading, but when 5.36 is UP that’s a problem.
Are they small enough to fail yet?
Boxturtle (Bring out yer dead! *CLANG*)
You are right. I just get tired of calling and writing. But I will try.
Yes, I saw that. Was reading kevin’s blog before I turned on the tv, so I had that in my mind while I was watching the reports. They don’t need freedom of the press if they are just going to report the police’s pov. That’s what I think anyway.
Just watch the IMF. That’s going to be Timmeh’s back door to protect his banker buddies.
Boxturtle (I wonder how much he can do without congress. probably more than I think)
Left vs Right is a charade.
A shadow play.
It’s Top vs Bottom
With legislated oppression
sandwiched in between.
From an OWS tweet.
“Newt is challenging O to reject OWS.”
WHen the time is right that’s just what Obama will do. For now, though, Obama has to pretend to sympathize with OWS. Newt is being cute here and, quite frankly, it is refreshing to see a GOP un-Romney flavor-of-the-month with some clue how to play the game.
Thanks. I’ll definitely check it out. It wasn’t a mere coincidence that one of the first missions of the newly-formed CIA was to smuggle surviving Nazis into the US.
It would only be fair. OWS rejects O.
Boxturtle (If Newt can make Obama take a public position without waffling, I’ll owe him a beer)
Will see if there’s a line outside when I take my car in for its oil change this a.m.
“I wonder how much he can do without congress. probably more than I think”
It depends on whether Congress gets interested. If Congress winks, Timmeh and the Wall Street White House will sell us down the river.
Livestream back on. TV reporter interviewing ‘Freedom’ (the livestreamer) asking “Is it over?” Freedom just laughed and answered “It’s just beginning.”
No, it’s not over. They can’t evict an idea.
“I’m not dead yet.”
All true. But we can still take advantage where it presents itself. Anti-bailout sentiment is very strong in the U.S. We must harness it and rouse Congress before Obama can make one of his secret dirty deals. Not saying it will work, but what the hell is there to lose?
That sent a good kind of shiver up my back.
Van Buren up on dn.
Trotsky said the difference between an evolutionary and a revolutionary is that the revolutionary takes advantage of opportunities as they arise.
Bill Black was addressing Occupy LA in link that SD had up yesterday. I’ll go back and see if I can find it.
He is riveting.
Thanks you. And thanks pastfedup, also, too.
(havin a hard time keepin up this morning)
Have you ever read “Confessions of an Economic Hitman” bu John Perkins. He tells what the IMF has done the past 30-40 years. It is an eyeopening book. He explains how they administered the Shock Doctrine Naomi Klein wrote about.
The problem with getting the IMF involved is stated succinctly here:
Mosler/Pilkington
Hey, it’s a small world. The gal in the center of the photo is a trauma counseler who is one of the spokespersons for Occupy Philly. My border collies and I squatted on the steps in front of City Hall next to her on Sunday night.
You made my day recalling building a Cherry library for a BOA exec. He wouldn’t sign the $30,000 contract until the stock cleared and stayed above $30( I think)
In the end he wouldn’t look at me or talk to me, sooo mature ,like a second grader. Guess who got the last laugh ?
To oldnslow & sharkbabe the best to you both on your birthdays , with many more to follow.
300 U.S. corporations supported the Nazi’s during WWII as well as Herbert Hoover. I couldn’t believe what I was reading. Different from what I learned in school.
Thanks tj
I don’t know that I’d call austerity so much as privatizing the government, which is one of the goals of neoliberalism.
Here’s the link.
Freedom just now: “It’s not about occupying a park. It’s the idea, occupying where you are, where you’re standing. You can occupy anywhere.”
Gotta go to work. Later. Good day to all you pups.
Yes, please pass the link along. I’d like to check it out.
More from Mosler/Pilkington:
This is a way to bail out the banks while imposing austerity on the populace — just as O and Timmeh did here. That is what O and Timmeh are pushing.
You’re aware of the involvement of Prescott Bush and Averill Harriman with Union Bank and Brown Brothers Harriman, financiers of the German Nazis?
Yes I am it’s in that book I recommended. There is so much stuff in there I will have to read it a couple of times. It’s about 600+ pages.
Yup it’s the Shock Doctrine pure and simple. I have read about this till I am blue in the face. It’s all the same stuff.
Add to this the following comment at Billy Blog as to possible Fed involvement:
.
Gimme the link, please. I haven’t seen that yet.
I’m just finishing the book Sarah’s Key about the round up and extermination of Jews in Paris in 1942. I think Rev Bev is the person who encouraged me to read the book. Devastating.
And most of you know where I live. Republican removal of collective bargaining challenged again in WI.
Bill Black addresses Occupy LA
No, but I just addded it to my Xmas book list. We’ll see what Santa brings.
Boxturtle (I’m still waiting on my pony)
Link
Thanks, I don’t read Yves as much as I should.
Given that Timmeh WANTS to bail out his banker buddies, austerity is how he wants to do it, and the fact that a large chunk of the IMF’s money comes from USA, I think they will go along if asked.
To my mind, the major problem is hiding the bailout from the taxpayers in an election year.
Boxturtle (They gotta get money from somewhere and they’re runnning out of pockets to pick)
Thanks, Om. I’ll watch that in a little bit.
(And, all is smooth sailing here. *g*)
Yes I have become sort of a history buff. The subject of the Nazi’s and the wars are kinda intriguing. I just wish I could retain it all. That’s why I have to read some books more than once. That one sounds like a good read. I will put it on my list.
When I went back I listened a bit, and he is actually speaking about the lack of a single criminal conviction of any of the WS “elites” as opposed to 10,000 criminal referrals resulting in 1,000 convictions following the S&L disaster.
Gosh, no one has enough time to keep up with everything, which is one of the great aspects of this tag team education that firepups are involved in.
That is great *g*
The swap referred to above — between the ECB and the U.S. — is a way to avoid the depreciation of the dollar if the Fed had to buy Euros in the FX market.
If used, from outward appearances, the U.S. would just be seen as supporting IMF loans to Italy, for example.
It’s made into a movie too. I thought I’d read the book first. Don’t know if I have the stomach to watch the movie. I can be a real baby sometimes.
Times they are a changin eh?
Our own teach-in.
Not being funny. It is. Let’s just stay all day, all of us.
OccupyLakeside
I ordered Shock Doctrine awhile back, dug into it, and then got sidetracked into another book. I was partway through Nixonland when Glennzilla’s book came out and now I’m reading that (excellent, btw).
I should allow myself only one book at a time, but I don’t, which means it takes a long time for me to get through a book, and I’m a pretty fast reader.

Never. Give. Up.
I would rather read the book. Movies about real life death and destruction I don’t do well with.
I would if I could, OmAli. As it is, I’ve been peeking back in during the day to see if anyone has left another comment. I never did that with Swim.
There’s fresh coffee and sticky buns. Have at it. Great discussion.
Occupy is a state of mind.
I can read the scariest of books, but movies are a different ball game for me too. Never saw Schindler’s List or Sophie’s Choice.
124, 125, 126
Yes, it’s true
I’m losing my mind…I think
Thanks for everything, SD. Have a peaceful day, unless you have to call someone out about something, then, have at it. *g*
Yeah, I’m watching that. I just KNOW that Timmeh is trying to backdoor something, but when it comes to manipulating money I must admit he’s much cleverer than I.
Boxturtle (But he can’t pull money out his butt yet, so he’ll have to do SOMETHING I can see)
You have a very good blog here SD (Lakeside Diner). I am priveledged to be here. Thank you very much.
See this.
The Rs will be watching closely.
My brother said I should see Schindler’s List it is real good but I am not sure I want to. When I watch a movie I want to escape from reality for a bit.
I’ll be lurking about.
Boxturtle (I’ll make some bacon. NOBODY is going to leave while bacon is frying)
Occupying the kitchen, fresh, hot baked sourdough in about an hour.
Great! I’ll be back in an hour. Yummers.
I would love to have some money to manipulate as would about 99% of us.
As Mick Jagger once said, Of all the things I’ve lost I miss my mind the most.
I had a friend in Jr. High school whose parents were survivors of one of the concentration camps. I still remember the shock of seeing the tattoo of the number on his dad’s arm.
Wish I had the energy to bake sigh! It takes all I have to care for my daughter and get her ready for school.
Actually, it wouldn’t be number one on my list :)
bacon, sourdough, coffee, sticky buns….
don’t mind me, I’ll just sit quietly here in the corner….
with a big plate and my mug
That makes it real doesn’t it? The generation today really doesn’t know how lucky they are. Aside from no job and high college debt. That is a lot but not like the early 1929′s and thru the war.
I actually have no problem with that. Not sure how much good it will do in the long run, but it’s sure helped out bank stocks in the short run. BofA went up to 5.38 just on that news.
But all it’s doing is buying time for the banksters to find the $1T from taxpayers so they won’t have take a bath.
Boxturtle (Don’t forget, the Big Shitpile still must be eaten as well)
When I lived in LA one of my friend’s dad owned a store on Foothill Blvd. Moe’s friends would come in and some had the tattoo. First time I’d seen one. Quite the reality.
Up to the “z” in Alzheimer’s perhaps ?
I left the ” l ” part awhile back, just kidding you.
I really think about it sometimes, what it would be like to have to live through something horrible. It makes you wonder what you really are made of, what you could do if you really were up against it.
Sanity is HIGHLY overrated. The happiest people I know are batshit crazy.
Boxturtle (Ever seen Sarah or Michelle without their smile?)
let’s hold hands!
Exactly
Not to be Buzzkillington but I think we will have our chance to see what we are made in a bit. It’s not going to be pretty. Unless Occupy changes things.
Guy told me once in a great bar” I lost my virginity and a pack of cigarettes in this place and I sure miss those cigarettes”
I wish we all lived nearer each other.
The condition is austerity.
Yes that would be ideal we could start our own community. I have thought a lot about that. I am trying to wake a few people up at my daughters school when I wait for her to get finished for the day.
Thank you all so much for the warm Birthday wishes.
Your welcome. It is nice to have you here everyday.
This is hilarious (from GQ via Paul Krugman, who is on the edge at about 10pm):
The Debt Ceiling
Have a super, wonderful, fantastic day, oldnslow.
Hey whatever happened to birthday spankings?
We have missed a couple of good opportunities. Surely we aren’t that old?
SOURDOUGH!! Real sourdough, made with wild yeast starter and with lots of fresh butter!!
Searching for the right word…..
There ISN”T one!!!
Well I am off to care for my daughter she is sick today and home from school. I will check back a little later. Have a super day everyone.
((little one)) see you later, popeye.
Me, too, right behind you.
safe travels, pupses dears, and safe home
maybe see you later for coffee?
your
ohmmm
Started this project yesterday just before she got home from school and put the dough in the loaf pans just before she was up this morning. School bus was here and now I’m in the kitchen, coffee, dishes, sweeping, load of laundry started. I seem to ease into the end of each year with some measure of attention to small acts of joy, self-care and organization. Numerous, almost petty, but not really urgent, loose ends to tie before the solstice present themselves without pushing me and offer immense satisfaction.
As demi said above, “occupy is a state of mind.” Thanks SD and pups.
(Almost everyone signing the recall petition says they have been meaning to do it, but didn’t know where they were available. Getting out a bit later.)
A great book, and an easy read. Lays out the basic game plan.
“Different from what I learned in school.” LMAO. And so it goes.
to nonqui at 165
What a sense of peace and timelessness you convey with your words. Thank you. You have made a very positive difference in my day. ((non))
My question is how much of the money he made did he give back?
Happy b-day O-n-S!!!
Thanks for the links SD! Hope you had a great day yesterday.
And BoxT… I’m waiting for the bacon. Mmmmmmmm.
My next door neighbor and his wife had those tattoos. It will stay in my consciousness forever.
We had a lot of that in Ohio over Issue 2. Some folks who signed commented about it wondering where they could do it. I had to go down to the local Democrat Party HQ to get one.
I KNOW there were walkers all over, but none of them seemed to get to me. Until I made that trip downtown specifically to sign.
Boxturtle (Perhaps the Husky’s scared them off)
IMO, we are just a step away right now. All the pieces are in place.
Hej, rc.
That has always been my dream.
one bacon, one coffee, that’ll be $2.25. Sticky bun is on the house.
Boxturtle (SD left the cash register unmanned. Not wise, with this group)
Spankings? Spankings? Really? Just when I was willing to stop obsessing about the goat lol.
I didn’t realize you were about during the day. Good. It is nice to have a place where we can all check in with each other no matter the time. Has anyone been here late at night yet?
on edit…yes, I forgot about the “last” contest lol
And bacon…that’s just the icing on the cake
Probably none, but he did a great service by blowing the whistle, and appears to have undergone a genuine conversion.
Don’t ever count Rodriguez out *g*
Now I truly have to go :)
Will probably see you lot later, though.
XOXOX
ohmmm
Hej, darlin’. Feeling all “spanking” new today? ;-)
Sounds good to me!
Wow, free sticky buns! (Wait… that does not sound proper.)
Well, I guess we are only talking about $2.25!
Yes he really laid out the way the IMF really operated. He also has another book worth reading called “Hoodwinked” He lays out solutions for the problem we have now.
That is my worry for my wife and kids.
Both books should be nationwide teach-in readings for OWS. If all the OWS’s can get space inside, and focus on teach-ins would be vital now in indoor settings.
And as for spooks watching these groups…invite them in and hand them a copy of the book.
Yes, starter is nearing seven months old. Just peeked in the oven. I once had a decades old starter that was awesome. Butter is room temperature.
Oooooooooooh! Mmmmmmmmmmm.
Great idea. I agree that the younger people who say they know something is wrong but they don’t know what it is would be a great tool for them.
Sun is out and the wind is down to naught. Post office parking lots around here are public spaces. Organizers are not ruling it out, but for now, we may not even need to do the door-to-door to meet the numbers needed.
I am going for real now even though it is tough to leave this great place. Off to do chores and get ready to deliver occupy supplies to the liaison for Occupy St. Louis. I am going to try to get a sense of what they are going to do during the cold weather months. Have a good one pups.
Here’s my quote for the day, from a 1942 edition of Tolstoi’s “War and Peace” I picked up on my last visit to the Salvation Army thrift store:
“Not only does a good army commander not need any special qualities, on the contrary he needs the absence of the highest and best human attributes – love, poetry, tenderness, and philosophic inquiring doubt. He should be limited, firmly convinced that what he is doing is very important (otherwise he will not have sufficient patience), and only then will he be a brave leader. God forbid that he should be humane, should love, or pity, or think of what is just and unjust.”
I apply this description to the attacks being perpetrated across the land upon the Occupy groups. This is war being made upon peace – the contrast between two kinds of human qualities, but this is not Tolstoi’s bravery, not in the actual clashes. The Occupies are not the enemy. This is an attack on the very ideals which gave the attackers the power they wield, their green rifles paid for with our tax dollars. An attack on the very future of this country.
We’ve sent tons of tear gas to Egypt. I guess that’s a good move as it will mean the tear gas companies can hire more people to make more tear gas. Who works for these companies? Will they be spending more and boosting the economy when the payroll tax gets extended? Can we build more green rifles now, and make more beanbags?
In the dark of night, they dismantle peace. Nothing to see here; move along.
Night is only good for sex and oppression. And we know which they consider to be more fun. ;-)
Is it too soon to be last?
People are just now waking up to Lawrence?
In WW1 he tied down three Turkish divisions with a force that never reached batallion size.
Why care? It’s what’s being done to us now.
I want just to look at those words on the page. They look, and are, so vulnerable.
That is what we are fighting for. I saw Scott Olsen give his first interview since being attacked with a tear gas canister. His words were slow but his thought process is there. The last thing he said in the interview brought tears to my eyes: He said to all the occupiers remain peaceful. Imagine someone who got brutally attacked says to remain peaceful. Occupy everything.
I am planning a sourdough bread baking project after the holidays. I’ve never baked bread “from scratch” but I’d like to have some real SOURdough. My ex-husband’s stepdaughter is a baker at Tartine in San Francisco, which is renowned for its bread, and she is going to “consult” long distance. I can buy “wild” starter online, and I may do that rather than try to make my own.
Way too soon!! LOL!
Hi, everyone, if anyone is last, I am. I managed to read througn all of the comments; there are many good ones. I did go out to google (I try to avoid it, but it is probably the best) and found The Nazi Hydra in America. It is a free read on the web right now. You can find it here. Mrs. BearCountry and I have read some of the materials in other places. Naomi Klein has some in her Shock Doctrine.
Hi BearCountry :) You made it in plenty of time, not last, by any means. Thank you for the link.
Coffee or tea? And I think a new batch of sticky buns (klynn at 182, close your eyes while I write that *g*) are about to come out of the oven.
I’ve got to scoot back to the kitchen. I’m perfecting a fruitcake recipe. In my best Scarlett O’Hara voice, “I will nevah overcook a fruitcake again”.
No, most people are unaware that Lawrence was asked to write a piece for the EB. Many have read Seven Pillars of Wisdom and Jeremy Wilson’s excellent biography but the existence of the EB article is prolly known only to ardent fans of Lawrence. I put it in the post as a treat to those who follow this kind of stuff.
I’m happy to particpate in consuming all of the good stuff here. I could use a sticky bun. I don’t usually drink coffee or tea. For breakfast I make myself a blender of orange juice, banana, and, if available, any fresh fruit we can get.
This is cool,SD! May I add one?
While Obama pardoned a turkey he signed a law okaying the human consumption of horses. Disgusting.

Never. Give. Up.
As luck would have it… var så god! (sort of like bon appetit, but in Swedish)
Welcome, RO. I strongly encourage people to provide links.
Never tried horse meat. Think I’ll put it in the “pass” category along with bait-on-a-plate, aka sushi.
Wouldn’t dream of it.
Thanks for adding to my reading list. I really don’t have enough now. *g* I think it was msmolly upthread who mentioned having several books going at once. I have to maneuver between two or more. I find it hard to stay with one from beginning to end.
WTF? Your REGULAR voice is the best Scarlett O’Hara voice I ever heard.
Isn’t it funny how our voices, out loud, aren’t the same ones we hear inside when we think, or write?
She does have that wonderful southern accent, doesn’t she?
Heh, People think it’s easy to be last. Witness BearCountry, who should know better, at #199. Everybody wants to horn in on the glory. But it takes great skill, fine judgment, and persistence to be last. Which is why I’m always last. “I’m SMAAAAART. And I want RESPECT.” Whoever is astute enought o recognize that quote, MIGHT be permitted to be next-to-last. Harumph.
Indeed. Quelle seductress!
What’s really funny is that my internal voice sounds exactly like your external voice. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that.)
I’ve never been head over heels with a cow, but having been, with several horses, I know I could never eat one.
In all seriousness, animals, as food, domestic ones anyway, put a tremendous burden on the earth as far as use of resources. Completely aside from the ethical questions, which are tremendous as well.
That is really interesting. Not sure who my internal voice sounds like, but it is very grave, not at all like my outside one.
uh, oh, fruitcake calling, and I can’t repeat what it just said….
OT, I have received a strange email the last couple of days. It is ostensibly about direct deposit and some outfit called ACH. I am trying to get verizon to investigate, but the service technicians all seem to be totally puzzled by my request. They keep asking me what is wrong with my email service that needs to be fixed. Has anyone else seen this email?
With friends like these, who needs fruitcakes?
Technicians can’t do anything about Nigerian inheritance emails or other scams. Telling you to mark it as spam is about all they can do.
BearCountry!!!!!
READ THIS
THAT EMAIL IS BAD!
Do not click the link in the email or open the attachment.
Hopefully someone will get your attention and send this information.
ACH is an authorization to deduct something from your checking account. It is setup between the account holder and the bank. If you did not authorize it dispute it.
A 1949 diner photo for SouthernDragon, from the Cushman Archive:
This little charmer stood on 31st Street near Cottage Grove Ave. in Chicago. Nowadays that is roughly the location of the J.J. Pershing Elementary School, which serves the residents of the Lake Meadows apartment development. Things change.
Thanks. Nice picture but it’s copyrighted and I can’t use it here.
Just washing up a few mugs and teacups so’s we don’t run out.
This one is perfect: Good communication is just as stimulating as black coffee, and just as hard to sleep after.

And someone is using that lipstick that never comes off….nice shade, and I think I know who it is :)
I’m just going to close my eyes and push a button today….Break It Down
Don’t look at me, sister. *g*
Thread isn’t dead! I thought I was the last.
SD, I like your choice of topics and links up top.
This be the never be dead thread.
Don’t be shy now, give it here, give it here.
I’m probably last again.
But maybe not.
As an addendum to my original response to you there are far more people reading firedoglake than comment. Many of them may be younger and have no idea who T E Lawrence was. If I’ve imparted some information to someone who’s never been exposed to it before we all win.
It’s not easy being last.
Yes, that deep rose IS your colour!!
sorry, rc
Definitely last. Apologies not necessary, Goat Girl. ;-)
