“I believe there is a major chance of a third party winning and I would like to see [Michael Bloomberg] pursue it for 2012,” Koch said. “What I believe he offers is independence and money to finance a campaign and to be president.”
I can certainly see where Koch is coming from: The Democrats and Republicans have both failed abysmally at representing the interests of the ordinary citizens who can’t afford to buy their services. Well, maybe not “failed” exactly. More like “never even attempted.” That’s why we’ve had three consecutive “throw the bums out” elections, as voters are desperately trying to find a party that will represent their interests. But Bloomie is not the answer.
The OWS movement has crystallized awareness that in a world where money is speech and corporations are people, most Americans have no voice. We’re second-class citizens with perfunctory, lip-service representation at best. Why on earth would we be hungry for a pro-corporate billionaire plutocrat – or some Third Way DLC stooge – as an alternative to the candidates from the crazy and not-so-crazy wings of the money party?
How can we have a third party candidate when we don’t even have a second party?

About Firedoglake
Mayor Krotch, nobody cares what you have to say. And I hardly think that Mayor Blowburg, who legislated his illegal third term, and cracked down on the original OWS crowd, is anybody worth voting for.
eli.
you come up with the best vids
Who’s Ed Koch? Gee mister, you’re old.
Bloomie makes Ron Paul look like a winner. Detestable man.
Thanks, Elliott! I figured it was better than yet another picture of money…
Was the breakup of the Zuccotti Park occupation the opening round of the Bloomberg campaign? Will he be running as the anti-poop-in-the-alley candidate?
Ed Koch – Kotch – is not a Koch – Coke – Brother, but he likes the way they think.
Bloomberg is a real, common man kind of billionaire. Salt of the earth, he is – that Bloomberg!
What a great idea!
Baby Steps.
ELI!
I seriously don’t think replacing all of the current one percenters with other one percenters is going to do any good. But I wouldn’t expect anything else from Ed Koch, even if he isn’t blood related to the Kochs.
So happy to see you Eli….yet BB was not really my idea for the 3rd, or 2nd, party But maybe we can brain storm a bit more…..By Koch’s standard, however, the first criteria is really rich….Not a good start, ya’ think?
I just love the idea that a corporate candidate positioned between the other two corporate candidates is just what we need or want.
Hiya, Bev! See above, in case the post wasn’t clear…
Looking back on it, it probably *isn’t* as clear as it should be. Too much rearranging, I’m afraid.
It’s constantly reported that majority of Americans want to end the foreign wars, and fairly tax corporations and the richest 400. Why is this impossible in a democracy?
I thought I thought it was clear….
Hopefully a little better now…
“I believe there is a major chance of a third party winning….
Nothing like blowing all credibility is less than one sentence, huh?
Heya, Eli!
Since when is that a consideration?
It’s most likely not impossible to do that in a democracy. So step one should be to change the country into a democracy.
Bloomberg would NEVER get elected. Not after how he dissed OWS. His diss wasn’t just a stonewall or objection. oh no. It was blatant disrespect and not just for the event… but it had that feel that HE DISDAINS PEOPLE. Suddenly – as he spoke – i saw UGLY.
How can we have a third party candidate when we don’t even have a second party?
No Sh*t…! *gah*
Aloha, Eli…! Another awesome post…! *g*
Like I said, I understand the reasoning. The total corrupt awfulness of both major parties has opened the door a crack. But the deck is pretty well stacked against a third party candidate. And good luck finding one rich enough not to need a party’s help with fundraising, but not so rich as to be a corporate wanker like Bloomie…
Aloha, CTut…! Thanks!
This is a key point.
Now that OWS movement has gotten the world’s attention it is getting a voice and the media is demanding that they get their “demands” via the format they prefer. “What are your top three messages? Who are your leaders? What are your demands? Who will you elect? Who is on your slate for elections?”
The movement has gotten media attention, now the media (and others) are wondering, ‘What can they use as leverage?”
This is the next question the media will be asking. The right wants to know so they can block it. The politicians on the left will be looking to figure out if they need to kowtow to them or ignore them.
HEY, ELI! Didn’t I read lately that Bloomie is not too popular with New Yorkers right now or did I dream that?
I figure I’ll never see a presidential candidate I could support until elections are publicly financed.
Ergo, I think I’m pretty fooked.
Most prople consider themselves ‘Independent’ rather than ‘Democrat’ or ‘Republican.’ Grounds for a third party? Likely not.
Better to vote out all D’s and R’s. Any incumbent. And vote differently. (That will confound the hell out of the Koch Brothers and their like, and all that money spent.)
Maybe viable candidates might come up who embrace the values of #OWS (and the Constitution of the United States)? Who knows? It’s possible, and with Internet/livestreaming and #FDL, they might win!
USA!
The Democrats will be (are) trying to figure out how to co-opt what the Occupiers want, so they can spin their corporate policies as supposedly advancing OWS’s goals.
HEY, TWAIN! He doesn’t have to win NYC, he just has to win 51% of the Electoral College. Not that that’s going to happen either, since he’s just more of the same. Even more blatantly so than any of the candidates except maybe Romney.
I think that’s about right. Our values are incompatible with those of the people (human and otherwise) who fund presidential campaigns.
And the ones most threatened by the OWS (Bloomberg) will hire undercover cops to be public poopers to discredit the movement.
You’d be able to vote for my County Council members then, jayt…! They’re all recipients of publicly financed elections, and, without any party affiliation…! ;-)
Naomi Wolf in the Guardian says she did a survey and found out what OWS wants:
“The No 1 agenda item: get the money out of politics. Most often cited was legislation to blunt the effect of the Citizens United ruling, which lets boundless sums enter the campaign process. No 2: reform the banking system to prevent fraud and manipulation, with the most frequent item being to restore the Glass-Steagall Act – the Depression-era law, done away with by President Clinton, that separates investment banks from commercial banks. This law would correct the conditions for the recent crisis, as investment banks could not take risks for profit that create kale derivatives out of thin air, and wipe out the commercial and savings banks.
No 3 was the most clarifying: draft laws against the little-known loophole that currently allows members of Congress to pass legislation affecting Delaware-based corporations in which they themselves are investors.”

You can bet your sweet ass that both parties are very grateful that there is no 21st Century version of Ross Perot around.
What I wouldn’t give for a real JFK or RFK now.
That will be a daunting task. If they come up with a spin, it will require at the minimum several suspensions of logic.
They’ve been posing as the people’s party for years. They have also mastered the game of fighting just hard enough to lose.
I doubt we need a ‘great man’ at this point. Instead, the system needs to be fixed.
At this point I would settle for a decent, honest man… Or woman.
wow – that makes so much sense that it could never happen here!
So it would take a candidate strong enough to garner honestly sufficient “small” donations…like O said he had done….that the candidate is not beholden & bought & paid for. In an ideal world such
a strong, appealing candidate could do it….
I hope so. But they’d need to have a hell of an organization.
Agreed. But for my $0.02, there’s too much corrupting influence of money in our politics, especially since it’s become so concentrated in the last 30 years. This subverts democracy. All that money is stacked on one side.
I’ve noticed that those who listen to the party spin do not pay close attention to the logic of the arguments. As long as the conclusion is understandable to them, they accept the rest with blind faith.
I keep thinking Clint Eastwood…I know, he’s too old, too rich, and too R….other than that….;) Someone was pushing Matt Damon for a while. Also Elizabeth Warren.
There is another way. First, think don’t vote R or D….
Good article. #1 and #2 are the no-brainers, but #3 hits the raw nerve which is driving the police suppression.
Hence the dearth of decent, honest politicians.
Our current system will always give you a Bush or a Clinton. (All decent, honest politicians, I’m sure.) Don’t expect a Lincoln.
Yep. It is structurally designed to manufacture them.
What characteristics/qualifications are you implying?
It does doesn’t it…? That’s why the State Legislature wants to kill it in ’14, the Big Isle is the ‘pilot’ program for the State…! 8-(
The necessary candidate will be compliant with the needs of the moneyed interests of Wall Street and the corporatist state, as well as the national-security MIC.
Breaks my heart…I really get sad when I look at O; I forget who was the book Salon guest talking about how obvious he is yet said O is not the worst….at what you’re talking about. Thanks for the answer.
Wait, what do you mean we don’t have a second party? I was sure we did.
Well bloomie fits that.
Further proof that Bloomberg et al are still stoopid, living a tight, oxygen free bubble and will die never understanding what assholes they all are.
It’s all the money party.
“Well, okay, but he does offer money. Lots and lots of beautiful money!”
Money? Well that does it then. Sign him up and they can choose sides.
Did someone say the clown car is getting full?
I go back a long way. There was a time way back when, when I pulled votes in the East Village at 8:00 pm to help Koch win over Carmine Desapio. Memories. What a klutz Koch became. Maybe he always was one. I was a kid then.
I guess this is what happens when you stop asking people how you’re doing.
I always tell people I’m walking on sunshine. [Cloaking now]
Oh, Eli, you have made my Saturday. I don’t even mind that (as usual) I can’t access the video. I am going to hightail it down to my slightly-right-leaning liddle Town Hall bulletin board and post the following:
FIRST THINGS FIRST
How can we have a third party candidate when we don’t even have a second party?
(Courtesy of Eli, firedoglake.com)
That should stir a few pots. It’s my first stab at Occupation. I realize it isn’t anything compared to what others do, but this is something I can do. Points to ponder. We all gather our mail there anyway, so even if it gets taken down, somebody’s going to notice.
Recommend.
Obama, Romney, Bloomberg: three peas in a pod.
Okay, here’s my minidiary – not big enough for a full page spread but I did this:
Got offline (biggie for me) and broke out my oil pastels and two index cards. On the first I put OCCUPY and then my town, under which – “(Bulletin Board)”.
[And lest this seem a minor thing (which it most certainly is) let me tell you there have been Bulletin Board Wars in this little town - my only hope is to sound sweet and sincere as I request a smidgeon of First Amendment rights.]
So under that heading I drew a flower, and I put on one side “(One small corner)” and on the other side I put “(A very small corner)”
And in the middle I drew a heart. (I’m good at hearts and flowers)
Then I did the other index card as I’ve described above. With more flowers.
And out I went to face the worst biting wind we’ve had so far this year, streaming across the Sangres from northern arctic regions to make the eyes water and the heart pound. Fellow striders greeted me,going up as I went down and I responded “Bracing, isn’t it?” To which the guy heartily replied “That’s the word for it!” I secretly hoped that was Spirit responding to my index cards.
So, my work now is done, thanks to four brand new thumbtacks, until next weekend, and hopefully I shall be joined, but if not there will be more hearts and flowers on another message. It’s not very much, but it’s something – thank you Michael Moore and Amy Goodman and Happy biting north wind to all!
