We all have our traditions, many of which we are quite inflexible about (in our house, my father had to carve the turkey, there never was any turkey carving training for the young ones, this was serious work). And yet as I look back over the years, I’m surprised to find how many “traditions” are relatively new to our celebration, like the Mud Bowl football game, not watched but played. Or lately going over to the neighbors and meeting up with friends for a festive dessert potluck.
One couple I know always watches the same movie after Thanksgiving dinner, sending the kids out with their friends. An aunt always sits down the Saturday after to write out her Christmas cards. And at our house, always the football games and leftover sandwiches. Oh, and the ritual making of the turkey soup starting late Thanksgiving night.
One of the nicest transitions is saying a simple blessing before the meal and going around the table sharing the things we are thankful for.
What are your traditions old and new? Dress up or down? Friends and family? Whipped cream or ice cream for the pies? Best china or paper plates? Potato filling or bread stuffing? (I’m getting hungry.)

About Firedoglake
Good Morning All…Going to the 80s in Austin, TX…typical Christmas weather ;) Happy Saturday.
Not to start off own a downer but Thanksgiving may be a let down this year for my wife’s and my family. My mom passed away in Feb 2010. My mother-in-law passed away this year and my dad passed away a couple of months ago. My parents were divorced and my dad lived in Indianapolis. So maybe this year we will start a new tradition. It’s kinda hard to celebratory when you lose that many family members in 1 year. Sorry for sharing a sad story but this time of year you want to remember those who made your previous years happy and memorable.
The family here at FDL has filled a big void in my life. Thanks to all who have accepted me and welcomed me as a friend. You guys are the best. *g*
Good morning all.
This Tgiving I’m going to meet a different dysfunctional family. My neighbors have invited me.
I normally go to my SIL’s, but last year there was a guest I really didn’t like, so am not eager to return in case he’s there again this year.
Good morning, Elliot and Bev
Our weather is typical Up and Down. On Wednesday, I was out in the front yard pruning bushes. It was about 85 and I had to keep taking water breaks. Weird, ’cause 85 is cold relative to the 110 degrees we got during the summer. I guess my body acclimates quickly. *g*
Hey, Those are big losses….My condolence to your family. Those are ones we don’t really get over. Both my parents had Nov deaths…sometimes I feel it first in the weather and realize what’s happening. So weird. Im sure you will find things of quiet pleasure. Take care.
Thank you and that’s why I love this place always a comforting voice here.
Good Morning, eCahn,
The other day I was trying to figure how long you and I have been yapping with each other. Do you remember the Thanksgiving you left your purse at one of your family member’s houses? Do you remember which year that was?
I’m sorry to hear about all your losses. That’s a downer for sure.
But starting a new tradition sounds exciting. So many people are revamping the old ceremonies, like weddings, memorial services; doing them their personally designed ways. Why not Tgiving?
I’ve gone to restaurants a couple of times on TG, and let me tell you, that’s a real treat. No shopping, no cooking, no clean up.
I don’t remember what year, but it was at least 3 years ago.
In planning for T’giving leftovers, here’s a diary I wrote after the fact last year.
My sister-in-law started that except she caters the meal to her house. Thanks for the condolences. I didn’t get a chance to tell you your house is awesome. I love old houses. I used to rehab them when I was younger. Seems like a long time ago.
I appeared at the very last of the Libby trial…You were here then, I think, Demi…Do you know who of you 2 may have been 1st?
Stop that now! You are making me hungry.
That’s a lot of losses for one year, Popeye. But, considering our ages, our parents are all getting Up There at roughly similar times. Lots of FDLers have lost parents in the time that I’ve been here.
Death is something that we ALL have to deal with, that’s for sure.
I hope you share happy memories of those who won’t be physically at the table, but remain inspirations.
So sorry to hear of your losses, popyeye. I know you have other family to share the holidays with, but it won’t be the same. How will you spend the holidays this year?
My two “children” (both in their 40s) and my 8 grandchildren live in Indianapolis, and that’s where I will be spending Thanksgiving, although it will be a small gathering this year. My son’s 3 children will be with their mother and her family, my daughter and son-in-law and their two will be with his family in Columbus. So it will be my son and daughter-in-law and her three youngsters, and perhaps a family friend of theirs, and moi for the holiday.
No traditions for this one: Thanksgiving in Paris. We are planning on roast pork stuffed with fruits as the main course, with a bunch of traditional French sides, like cornichons, patés, terrines, and a Beaujolais nouveau.
I did a catered turkey in the city one year. In the smaller space it helped a lot not to have to prepare it.
Thanks for the house complements.
Oh jeez – it dipped below freezing here – trying to warm up – Happy Saturday
Thanks Demi yes when my wife and here sister get together they share old times with their dad and brothers. I just sit there and listen like a good boy. *g*
Yes, I caught onto the site a bit before the Libby trial.
((( popyeye99 )))
Yes, one of the things I’m most grateful for is FDL family.
Unfortunately, no leftovers and no carcass for turkey soup either.
My daughter-in-law was in a funk because she’s a gourmet cook and was looking forward to putting on a huge feast, and now it’s going to be a small group. I suggested a non-traditional meal, perhaps something she doesn’t get to make often (or hasn’t tried).
So I have no idea what the meal will be, but it will be delicious.
I’m soooo jealous. The meal sounds wonderful.
However, I’ve brought Beaujolais nouveau to TG a couple of times. I “get” the idea, but for me it falls between two stools: not red nor white. I prefer a full bodied chardonnay.
We will prolly go to my sister-in-law’s again. My father-in-law will be celebrating his 80th birthday the week after Thanksgiving in Jackson Missouri where most of his family is. I don’t travel to well anymore but will go to that function.
Your welcome.
Thanks Elliot I think I would go stir crazy during the day if I didn’t connect with my friends here.
g’morning Elliott & Pups, can’t believe i’m at the Lake so early. Usually i show up at LLN … but it’s always good to have time to comment.
popyeye99, i don’t think i’ve been on a thread with you before, but condolences on your losses. It’s bittersweet to mourn the absence of family while remembering the times together from years gone by.My dad has been gone for four years now and we’re at the point where we fondly remember his quirks and are relieved not to have gallons of leftover cranberry sauce because he was the only one that adored that iteration of cranberries and insisted that mom cook LOTS.
A tradition in our extended family is the marathon Lord of the Rings Monopoly game after the meal is over. Greatly enjoyed by all, even those who don’t play. Lots of yelling, laughing, geeking out and sounding the Horn of Gondor.
NPR doing a great New Orleans story….Armstrong Park reopems; music in the background Great sounds….nice
Good morning, Thanksgivingpupses, and thank you Elliott for inviting us.
Popeye, you are right, we want to remember those who made our previous years happy and memorable. That is a lovely sentiment. I hope you will find a way to keep some of your well loved traditions, and it is perhaps a time to include new ones. Happy Thanksgiving, my friend.
We have had to make new traditions at our house, too, but here are a couple of old ones. I make the bread dressing that my mom made, and my husband makes the cornbread, sausage and oyster dressing that his mom made. We always put our lighted Advent star in the window on Thanksgiving evening. The one that I will miss is the annual banter about “whose cranberry sauce is better, Mimi’s or mine?” that my mom and I used to carry on with my son. It was always fun to see him squirm!
This year I have a feeling we are going to have some family news that will start a new tradition. I’ll let you know… :)
Happy Thanksgiving, pupses.
Are you taking anything?
I am usually snoozing on the weekends but couldn’t sleep this morning. Good to meet you and thanks for the condolences. The generations go by fast and kids grow up. I think this is the best time of my life. I see the fruits of my labor in my children. Ah the quirks yes I remember those from my dad as well.
grrr I mean brrrr
I came here at the same time, for the same reason. I think there was a Christy Hardin Smith post over at Huffingtonpost, giving us the laymen’s take of it and I followed the link to Firedoglake.
Scooter was convicted in March of 2007, so about 4 1/2 years ago.
I think eCAHN was here before me. I got to know her first at Late Night, with TRex. That’s where I felt most comfortable commenting then. It took me a while to jump in to the fray during the day. I remember things were different in those days. Almost no one had a one sentence comment, and many of the comments involved a Link.
With another of the long time Front Pagers, Blue Texan, taking a Hike, I guess I’m getting all nostaligic.
morning, and sorry you had that kind of year, popeye, glad you can join us here.
One of the things I did on my trip was make pumpkin pie, took the makings with, for Avedon;
https://picasaweb.google.com/RCalvo8/TripHighlightsOctober2011#5676332107354691714
Thankful for the good friends here.
mMMM leftovers, the best part!
Thank you OmAli you always have something positive to say. You are a great friend. I am glad you made it here today. It is early and all the talk of food is making me hungry.
OOOOH. Can’t wait for an update.
I’ve never tried this, but was always tempted. It is featured every year at the holidays on NPR
Susan Stamberg’s Cranberry Relish
There were a couple of great recipes for leftovers in NYT a couple of years ago. One was an Indian recipe which included coconut milk; the other was turkey crepes.
Thank you Ruth and man do I love pumpkin pie. My mom used to make real whipped topping for her pumpkin pie. She was a great cook and I know I will really miss that.
You know, I have heard her give that recipe for…well, forever! Never wrote it down though, so thanks!!
Hi Ruth! Are you back?
Good morning all. And NDFG Wow! We don’t get to see you much ndfg, hope you are well.
We have gone to friends the last 3 or 4 Thanksgiving days and the meal is a group effort. Always delightfull. It is fun to experience a collection of families tradittions all lumped together in a mishmash of mutually enjoyed relaxation and genuine fellowship.
Noa & Anne are in China; coming back tomorrow. We’ve been emailing, but the planning isn’t complete. I’ll bring wine.
I suggested that instead of a second turkey (they’re going the organic route from a CSA; those turkeys tend to be smaller), I could provide the venison loin my hunter friend gave me after he bagged the buck a week or two ago. That sounded good to Noa, but she wanted to wait until they got back to see what her father had to say. He had a diner for many years, and I understand he’s pretty inflexible about what it ‘must’ be.
Sorry to Rub it in. Really. (I won’t tell you that I planted some veggies and herbs too.)
It was cold enough to have a fire in the fireplace last night though, so we cozied on the couch with some wine – yes, eCAHN, a chardonay, and watched a movie.
Ho-lee-smoke that looks delicious! I saw a recipe for that in some travel magazine, but your photo makes it look even better!
Yep, I spent most time on the Christy PUAC….that was fun…when we discovered Ginger Beer + some wonderful soup recipes appeared…..
I discovered double thick double cream, which I don’t think we have here, on my trip. ooooh, good.
hi, OmAli, yep, am back. the last week, I got a nasty cold, which I’m getting over.
I think he should slide some down our way.
drool
I don’t think we have met, either, but I already love you and your family’s after dinner tradition! I’ve never heard of the the LOTR monopoly game, but just visualizing all of you whoopin’ it up is hysterical. And the sounding of the Horn of Gondor !! LOL with delight!
Where did you go on your trip?
I came here after the Libby trial was over, so I missed that, but I’ve been here 3 years or so. I followed a link from somewhere else also, perhaps TPM, which was one of the first blogs I followed (well before its current iteration).
And everyone here seems like longtime friends now. We learn about each others’ personal lives. I don’t know if that happens among the regulars on other blogs.
Ms. Calvo has returned! Yay for you and your trip. How’s your head, dear?
Everywhere. Really. Started in London, chunnelled to Croatia(Zagreb, Zadar, Nin, Split, Dubrovnik) by way of Paris and Munich, visited Malta, Gibraltar, then to Spain, (Malaga, Granada, Barcelona, Seville), got on the boat back here by way of Canaries.
newdealfarmgrrrlll!
Sister! I hardly ever see you anymore, but I rarely stay up late these days. I don’t know how I did it before. You do remember that one famous summer we were all here late, late late. :)
I’m going to be jealous, aren’t I?
Turkey’s a tradition I think would be painful to miss – but sounds like your meal will be delicious no matter what.
Condolences and empathy, popyeye99@2. Many of us have had to adopt new traditions in sorrow-full circumstances. You are not alone. Son and I will enjoy a quiet dinner in town so family can gather out of town. Mom’s in a local nursing home in her twilight days, we still discuss politics and the daily news so I’ll be her company that day.
At Christmas, shortly after my father-in-law passed away, we started a new Eve dinner tradition. Over thanksgiving we each selected a country, then drew the winning one and planned for it, sought out new cuisine and new culture, found small items from the country to add to the tree. That first year’s Greek lemon chicken became a family go-to comfort food to this day.
Peace in this often-hard season to all. And lumps of coal in the stockings of corrupt Congress. And lumps in their Thanksgiving gravy.
Hi, head is fine, chest is wheezing. Strangest bug ever. Glad to be back, and have fine crop of chard and arugula in my garden, rained while I was over there.
My little one is up and we are going to the Art Museum for her Brownie troop today. Thanks for welcoming me to PUAC another place to visit on the weekends. Have a great day everyone. {{{hugs to all}}}
NDFG!!! Hello, old friend! I’ve missed you!
I was shocked and alarmed by Blue Texan’s anouncement yesterday and immediately thought “aaahh shit, what are we going to do in the morning and after lunch now.” I have such a fondness for the cafe atmosphere of BTs threads and the people that comment. I hope that those 2 time slots don’t loose that.
good games and good stories!
I just knew that you love potlucks. I do too.
It’s nice to taste other’s favorites.
*waves* hugs to you ‘n cbl! i’m doing fine, just working too much. Damn work sure cuts into the blog time.
ooo pitter patters perhaps?
Wow a lot of places. If I weren’t afraid to fly I would travel. Always wanted to go Amsterdam and Paris. My brother went a couple of years ago. He said it was really awesome.
That’s my role these days, the mother is beyond being able to eat anything much, but go over and check in. Sadly, she’s also not in command of info anymore. I had thought to deliver meals on wheels, but not with this bug.
OmAli, did you see that Dakine said he doesn’t like cheese? Thought of you when I read that.
Keeping my mouth shut. I guess it does take all kinds.
((Dakine)) ((Om Ali))
Have a great day, man
{{{popyeye}}}
Well, I’m not sure…..possibly….sorry to sound mysterious….we will both have to wait and see :)
You can take a Transatlantic, that’s how I got back. It’s a long trip, but I love the ocean.
thank you! i love how everyone plays, from the preschoolers to the sr citizens. The family forms into teams that play turns, which makes it possible. Great fun!
See you tomorrow. My niece is here & we’re going to start the day’s activities.
What an amazing trip you had. Croatia. Wow. Glad to see you back.
looks yummy.
My little sister’s the pie man, one year she forgot to add the sugar – you should have seen the looks on people’s faces as they took that long awaited first bite!
Fortunately, there were many other desserts, altho the disappointment was palpable.
Well, I think she’s going to have turkey on Friday or Saturday, when my son’s three will be with us. I don’t know how excited they will be to have two turkey dinners, and I’m sure that’s what they’ll have at their Grandma Sue’s
My daughter-in-law made the best turkey soup I think I’ve ever had a couple of years ago (we all went to HER dad’s last year). As we were clearing the meal, she got out a huge stock pot, and into it went the carcass, the mashed potatoes, the stuffing, and I’m not sure what else from the table, and she cooked it all night. When I got there the next day and had some, it was to die for. Like a thick porridge, redolent of herbs, totally unlike my more brothy turkey soup. I’m sure the only way to get the recipe is to be there, because she just starts dumping in spices and herbs and I doubt she has a recipe written down anywhere.
Have a great day.
I agree, oldnslow. Someone else could probably do Swim, since it’s sorta a news roundup presented with snarky humor. But I will miss BT’s noon threads. A lot!!
Hej, oldnslow. It will be up to all of us to be sure they are traditions that aren’t lost….
Yep. We Are Family. There is such a comfort in the “Known” and the consistancy of expectations.
But, I also enjoy the adrenaline of change and the new.
My normally loose lips are sealed. You’ve heard nothing from me….. *G*
Thanks; the kitchen there is minimal, so no room to roll out crust, had to find one, and it was a real quest.
{{{ sister! }}} yes, fond memories of that! hilarious times with TRex on LLN.
Prairie, how about sharing that lemon chicken recipe?
what makes Thanksgiving so wonderful!
Hahahaha!
I’ll bet Dan’l likes cheese, so that makes up for it.
hee
Which is really funny, had never been to what used to be Iron curtain territory, but have friends there, and loved it. Really good place, surprisingly, tropical. Look thru the pics with the pumpkin pie, and it’s exhausting putting together the album I’m working on.
bye! did you see my comments at EPUland?
Have fun, or be productive. Or both.
Tomorrow, then.
It really is a comfort to me even when I don’t comment. Which is often. Just lurking and following the threads is nice.
msmolly! good to see you here too! i’m glad we get to interact on fb. i’m grateful to Jane for starting us on fb, i stay in touch with Pups that way these days, we really do have a community.
That’s why I so enjoy the new “faces” (or as Suzanne says, “fonts”) that show up here. I seldom visit the late night threads, so I’m sure I miss some of the regulars who congregate there.
Remember when we all got Facebook accounts so we could put that little blue “F” symbol beside our handles?
Remember when we busily planned and held “meetups” in various areas of the country? I was never fortunate enough to be close enough to attend one, but they looked like fun!
Edit: rememeber when Suz was the LLN mod, before she took over the thread?
Indeed and thanks for the PUAC.
i think you’re right to come here for a bit because the people here are, as you say, the best. That’s a rough year. Guess you have to try to give thanks for having good people in your life but it’s tough to do it with the empty chair or chairs at the table for the first time. Condolences to you. Maybe put traditions on hold, keep it simple. Enjoy those you have with yoy.
It will be interesting to see who takes those time slots. We are a fairly established group of commenters, not that we don’t welcome new ones, and I hope the FDL PTB have warned whoever it is what we are like. :o
what a fun idea. The possibilities limitless!
have fun!
I’m going to miss him dearly
Off the top of my head, so portions not!!!
in a 9×13 baking dish, preferably pyrex!, pour in EVOO to coat bottom well, add minced garlic to taste, lemon juice [2-3 lemons depending on size/quality], sprinkles of oregano [fresh from the garden in the summertime], fresh-ground pepper. Slurry together, then place chicken thighs [breasts work too] skin down in dish. Cover with foil. Bake in 350F oven and turn skin-up part-way through. Last few minutes, remove foil so tops turn nice and golden. Don’t leave foil off too long, or the yummysaucy part will cook away. Serve with rice.
replying to msmolly@85 [my reply not working?]
You can’t imagine how cool a meet up is. We got to meet so many pups about 3 years ago. Including newdealfarmgirl, BlueTexan, Marcie, Jim White, eCAHN, things, loohoo and sooo many more. Delightfull.
We watched a program – probably Rick Steves – that showed a park or preserve in Croatia that had waterfalls everywhere. Does that sound familiar? I need to do some research. It looked amazingly beautiful.
Ruth, do you plan to resume PUAC duties now that you’re back? A few of us gamely filled in while you were away, and the rotating “voices” are fun, especially when we don’t know who’s up next. But I enjoyed your hostessing, too.
It’s always good to see your name pop up, and fun when cbl emerges unexpectedly.
You enjoying your breakfast of champions this a.m.?
wow – what a transformation – never heard of it done with the stuffing and potatoes
Do you remember everyone asking each other to get “f’d”? It really was a great way for us to get to know each other, and now we still use it to stay in touch, or say somehthing too OT for the threads.
Morning ndfg,
Wishing for a bit more work to cut into blog time, but still managing OK.
Hey pups, heading to my sisters and her family. Dug out the butternut squash soup idea as my planned contribution. There is usually quite a crowd. From a family member with a freezer full of lobster, mahi-mahi and other nautical delights to such fare as marinated venison tenderloins on the grill, plus a turkey, usually a pheasant dish, plus nut breads, puddings, stuffings, cranberries and such, then on to pecan, pumpkin, apple and cherry pies. We have a wine expert in the family who is a retailer in the Chicago area, always with cases of samples. I started a partial fast this past week to prepare. We all get along pretty well.
I don’t suppose you want to share with us who will take those time slots, hhhmmm?
Oh yes. About to go for some hash and eggs.
Yum. Thanks! I love chicken and I’m always looking for new ways to fix it. My fave now is a marinade with white wine, garlic, olive oil, salt and a few red pepper flakes, and Herbes de Province. Then I cook it on my Weber charcoal grill.
I didn’t get there this time, but it’s not far from Zadar. Plitvice.
I hadn’t either. But the key was the herbs she must have put in at some point after I’d left. She is really good with herbs and spices.
I think we are going to have a push to start doing the meet ups again. We surely have a lot more Pups than we used to and lots of new ones.
Popeye brought up Brownies, and I’m thinking of the song we used to sing in Girl Scouts.
Make new friends,
But keep the old.
One is silver
And the other gold.
Sounds like an afternoon and evening filled with great food and conversation.
oh yes, the blue F -lol
*sigh*
Yes! Thank you for the name.
Yeah it was like all of the cool kids had those little blue Fs, and those who didn’t were rushing to get them!
thanks, it’s not out of the question, but you see, I missed having the bunch of you doing your thing, it would be nice to see other voices too.
It’s very hard to get online when I’m having to pay for every minute, and blogs are full of ads which take time to load so that’s even worse.
Ha! If you think the Breakfast of Champions is bad, have you heard of the Biker’s Breakfast. Beer and a smoke.
those beautiful travertine falls?
tasted a butternut squash soup with pear recently. Super yummy.
How can we bribe her to tell us? You hold, I’ll tickle.
Watch out, El.
Instead, I went to Kornati, closer by Zadar, and climbed the cliffs. Was a bit too early for the olive festival, which I would have loved.
Sine we moved to FL 5 years ago, we’ve enevr developed thanksgiving traditions. Family up north doens’t get back together much. Sucks. Who knows?
Sounds like an excellent way to prepare as well. Must brush snow off the Webber….
your tables are surely burdened with that spread – sounds amazing
hmmm
big shoes to try to fill
Oh, I didn’t know you were in that situation. Have you tried using Firefox with AdBlock Plus? It would eliminate the ads. I assume you’re on a dial-up connection?
Yum, I have a small pail of pears from an old orchard here that need to be used.
Thanks now that I have been here it will be a great day. *g*
Occupy the meetup
Oh, Prairie, that sounds super scrumcious. I’ve used a butternut squash soup as gravy for left over mashed potatoes when we ran out of gravy, because, really, who doesn’t run out of gravy?
(I know you still have a too soon missing loved one. You amaze me.)
My grill is on my screened porch (the side away from the house) and I grill all winter, too. In other houses I’ve had it on a deck and have kept a path shoveled to it when it snows.
Oh, I wasn’t saying it’s the problem here, but when I’m traveling. I have to pay through the nose in hotels and ships.
LOLOLOL!!
I will be thank-full for family, friends old and new, kindred spirits this Thanksgiving. Also, Chris Hayes with UP. Most intelligent conversation on television.
I hope to be thankful for re-broadcast at a later time Sat and Sun for the 99.99% who are not in the Eastern time zone.
Doesn’t look like shes givin it up.
I was kind of wondering if having rotating hosts might be a good way to go, continuing on into the future.
Just a suggestion – that’s for you, Ms. Elliott. And, at no charge.
Sorry for your losses. I just buried my grandmother a few weeks ago.
Oh, yes, I misunderstood. I still like AdBlock plus, though, even though I have DSL and WiFi at home. Kills me when I travel and take my iPad and have to use Safari, which has no AdBlock Plus add-on.
Same here, tho it’s in those wee hours when I should be asleep.
Well, and you’ve had some other changes since you moved, haven’t you?
I wonder how many times an idea has to happen before it becomes a tradition?
Why both, of course! Whipped cream on top, ice cream on the side.
We could draw straws. The short one loses, I mean wins! Or something.
what will you do Thursday?
You can get UP online the day after the broadcast, which is how I watch Rachel Maddow. And sometimes clips of Keith, although his entire show isn’t posted.
Chris Hayes is very refreshing to watch, and his guests are delightful. Not the same-old, same-old.
Meetup at the Occupy.
Thank you BHL you are such a respected voice at FDL I really enjoy reading your posts. Straight to the point and no BS. Thanks again.
O/T A little blog-whoring for me I am going to post a diary on Monday on the 11-17-11 march in St. Louis. It was awesome and I am glad I was there.
I didn’t take my notebook, or anything I didn’t absolutely need, there were so many trains and buses and places I had to carry things.
Will do the time I spend with my daughter is priceless.
We need to do that again because I want to come. *g*
It is great to have one family member with a kitchen/dining area large enough to accommodate. Throw in a good natured black lab to demand attention from the younger children, no toddlers around, I supposed the nieces and nephews and their spouses might surprise us, one of these years. Four hour drive is the worst for the crowd that shows. A couple of siblings too far away to attend have big family ties where they live.
Dat’s right! I had to drive a ways south to meet up with Loo Hoo and the South crew then. Now, I know there are FDL pups in LA and I would love to meet them.
Maybe Lisa can host one. There’s no lack of good eateries in the City of Angels.
well that smile is contagious – see you next week
I didn’t really think so, but it’s always fun to have a tickle fest.
I love your tradition of drawing country names and then all the goodness that follows!
We had a Christmas Eve tradition that involved readings. The idea originally was that each of us would select a passage of some work, a poem, etc. to read aloud at some point during the evening. On Edit – her intent was that we would choose something seasonal!
Some of the more memorable ones were: My niece forgot, so grabbed the first book that came to hand – The Viking Invasion of Ireland, or something like that; my brother, traditionally, of course, never participated but felt free to comment about everyone else’s choice and performance; my little sister, who we teased constantly about her constant handwashing read ‘Some Little Bug is Going to Get You Someday -
The inviting green cucumber, it’s most everybody’s number
While sweetcorn has a system of its own.
Now, that radish seems nutritious, but its behavior is quite vicious
And a doctor will be coming to your home.
Eating lobster, cooked or plain, is only flirting with ptomaine,
While an oyster often has a lot to say.
And those clams we eat in chowder make the angels sing the louder
For they know that they’ll be with us right away.
I’d be thankful if I could get a guest list from him ;)
You have my condolences it is hard to lose a loved one. Keep their memories that is all you have. *g*
I remember the Thanksgiving when my daughter was about 9 and I had the whole family at my place. I did the turkey and smashed taters and everyone brought the sides.
I made a mac ‘n cheese casserole for my daughter because she said she didn’t like turkey. My mom made a big deal about how I didn’t have to do that, and why did I. Well, mom, ’cause I love her, that’s why. I took a different path in child rearing than my mom did.
Shutting up now.
Yikes! I’m late to this party. No traditions here except to eat until I pop.
Good morning!
That is priceless. Constant handwashing is what my doctor preaches, too.
Hey, maybe if you have enough of those pears, you could poach them in nice full, rich red.
One year we had a platter of hot dogs, so the kids would have something actually to be thankful for. They developed a taste for turkey later.
Was wonderin where you were this morning. Good morning!
Well, pupses, gotta get walkin’ and talkin’ (as my long deceased uncle used to say). Breakfast, Farmer’s Market, errands, and then making burp cloths (using cloth diapers, flannel pieces, and ribbon) for a new baby due next week. And my handyman just called and is coming by for a chore.
Have a great day, all!
Good celebration! There’s a restaurant nearby that serves turkey dinner to anyone and everyone who shows up. This might be the year to try that.
Laura Flanders was on today, also Melissa Harris Perry, and… hmmmm, not sure on the rest. I missed a good portion, too tempting to stay under the quilts in the deep woods.
Thanks for the heads-up about online full show. That’s a tolerable option until MSNBC wises up and carves out more time from the prison dreck for re-airing UP. Maybe they could do a two-fer with MTP and see who gets the ratings [tee-heee-heeeee, yep, I'm biased, know who would win!]
have a wonderfull mm
Hey Margaret!
I’ve got to go, guys. Elliott, this was so.much.fun!! Thank you!
I’m thankful for all of you.
Happy Thanksgiving from your
ohmmm
Most of the more exotic fare is either family caught or harvested. Dinner is planned for after dark to allow the couple of hunters their time in the field for the season that starts today. Freshly caught lake Michigan smoked salmon is often on the appetizer trays.
I’m not traditional, but I serve a traditional T-giving (I’d be castigated if not). No longer stuff the turkey but prepare dressing as a side dish, and no longer make everything (including yeast rolls) from scratch at age 70. Only because it’s a smaller galley-type kitchen. Since being diagnosed w/high blood sugar a mo ago, will probably only be able to eat turkey breast, nothing else, maybe a salad (watching carbs and fat). But love to cook and feed others; a small party of relatives, and will send some leftovers w/them.
As an old protester, I’m thankful this year for the Occupy movement.
cute poem – as for your brother, every part’s got to have a pooper
oooh, Chris Hayes on now talking to Alex Witt about a leaked memo from a lobbying firm to the American Bankers Assoc on creating negative narratives about OCCUPY. Gee, I am so surprised.
(((vagreen)))
Always up for a new treat, thanks.
I slept in this morning. That’s pretty unusual for me but I guess I needed it. How are you and the lovely cbl?
I love my whipped cream – we had a whipper – you put the cream and flavorings inside and it used a nitric oxide canister for ever ready whip.
What is it you say, Now it’s a Party!
Hope all is well with you. See, the other benefit of you having a job, besides you can, like, pay your bills, is when you do show up, we are all even more grateful.
Dang it! Everybody’s leaving just as I’m waking up. Oh well. See ya at caturday!
Just wanted to say hello Peg, hope your doing well. Have a great Thanksgiving. I know I am thankful to have you as a friend. I am really going now.
Yes, developing a taste for turkey later. And, really, turkey doesn’t have that much taste, does it? In and of itself.

Aww! What a sweet thing ti say. Hi demi!
Laters popeye!
((Mollygirl))
You get the Best Transition to Retirment award ever.
Ha, well maybe on that particular subject, big sister. Nobody here would ever want you to do that. Speaking up is what makes you so very delightful and loved.
CBL is, as always, the wondefull. Looking forward to a short week.
Agreed. It’s great sandwich material, anyway.
I love doing PUAC every now and then. Dunno if I have it in me to do it week in and week out now that I have a full time gig though. I think rotating hosts might be one way to go. BTW, whatever happened to KarenM?
From a lobby shop with former Boner staffers. What a surprise.
answer – not Gregory
Happy Thanksgiving!
a true feast!
Yep but for me it means working that much harder to get the same volume of work out in two days less. The good news is that the pay period ends on Wednesday so I’m going to squeeze as many hours in as possible. Might not see much of me from Monday till Wednesday!
Sounds delicious and warm
Yes, much gratitude for Occupy
SHOCKED! Shocked I tell you!
It is so cool to be back working, no? I was away from manufacturing for about a year and a half a while back and it was like going home when I finally got to walk back into a shop.
haha, that is great!
Thanks for great company, got to get out to do a couple of outdoor things, now.
I heard from her this week, she’s done the transplant for her son-in-law, just got back to work. Will take a bit to get back to normal tho.
She did say she wanted to write about it, so perhaps we will hear from her soon.
Thanks for the diary Elliott,
I’m going to do the OT shuffle and head out of here with a half-dozen recall Scott Walker petitions to get him on another message, other than one from the god he claims has sent him on his mission.
Peace and Resolve
Have a wonderfull day, Ruth. Welcome back.
Sure is! And being back in production too! I’m just not cut out to do much office work unless there is a good dose of actual working to go along with it. Right now, I think I’ve got a pretty good balance going of about 70 percent operating machinery and about 30 percent administrative duties. It’s great to be active and employed again. I still hate SA but it looks like I might be here for a while, maybe for good.
That’s good, hope it went well. Now am really off.
Have a great Saturday Ruth. Good to “see” you.
(cheerin for you down here in Austin)
Happy hunting.
Interesting, I just said something similar in my email to Ellie.
I even asked about KarenM. Hope everything’s okey dokey with her and her family.
Thanks for your good wishes/words. now really really off.
Be good, gf. See you tomorrow, most likely.
Good. I’m glad she’s doing well. I can’t imagine trying to recover from that kind of surgery. Ya know, the money we spend on innovative ways to kill each other might be better used for coming up with alternatives to cutting people open. Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease.
OK pups. I’ve got a overheating car to look into. Have a joyous day all. Thanks again, Elliott, for all you do around here.
good luck doing the good work, may you sign up hundreds
You are so awesome. Keep up the great work.
well – god bless her for donating a kidney for her son-in-law – that is a beautiful gift.
Have a good day oldnslow. Hug the wonderful cbl for me!
Happy Thanksgiving – give cbl a squeeze for me
Oh my. I guess I missed that news. Organ donation transplant? And, didn’t her daughter have some health issues too?
They say When it rains, it pours.
Of course! And what a selfless act! Like I said, I can’t imagine recovering from something like that. I don’t know if I’d have the courage but nobody has asked me for a kidney yet.
LOL! Our cbl is going to be squeezed to pieces. Maybe she’ll be able to get her hugs firsthand someday.
and she was an actual match for him rather than being part of a transplant chain
Give It To Me Baby !!!!
Right Back At Ya ((((Firedogs)))
Mornin’ All -
I bought some fresh and bright, end of the season, discount priced, blaze orange last year. A must for any outdoor activity for the next ten days. Upset republicans won’t be able to claim they mistook me for venison on the hoof. (Just kidding there) ;^)
Just finished converting a camera tri-pod to use it as a portable petition signing desk.
there’s something about that girl ;)
was actually giggling listening to that – because that worked so well with HB Gary and Anonymous – lol !
(((cbl)))
Gotta get up to your neck o’ the woods someday and see y’all.
Yeah, that’s what astonished me. That she would be a close match to somebody she’s not related to except by marriage. Normally it takes years and years of searching to find a suitable donor and there she was, close by and willing. I’m not a believer in fate but if I was, I’d say that’s what that was.
hmmm, what is your Thanksgiving schedule ? oldnslow and I both have Fri, Sat, Sunday off -
I had a really bad week personally speaking, the details of which I won’t go into. So bad that I spent most of Thursday crying or trying not to. My work peeps were really cool about it but I don;t get why so many of them attempted to comfort me with “god”. I know they meant well and it was sweet well but I don’t think most Christians know what a non theist is.
Nothing yet. I’ve gotta go to see my doctor on the 29th, (I’m only eight months late), which is on Ben Casey in Austin. I’ve got to try to get my oil changed before that. Maybe I’ll break the rules and do it myself in the parking lot on Wednesday night.
((Peggy))
Oh, honey, I’m sorry for whatever made you weepy.
I have more and more lately stayed away from using the God talk with others. Especially if I don’t know what their belief system contains. Going with more universal language if someone needs a prop.
LMAO! Yeah, I was reading that earlier. Apparently the big concern of theirs isn’t that pro OWS Democrats getting elected but rather the Republicans might stop supporting Wall Street. I think this is going to be hugely significant and damaging to both Republicans and major donors and it’s being covered by the toady media. Police brutality, violent suppression, openly discussing ways to undermine the movement…. Don’t political leaders EVER read history?
ooooh, that would put you in Austin in time for a certain scooter-boy’s birthday – (vanilla mud cake w/ raspberry filling) you could meet Kris, wife and grandbabies too – no pressure (Not!) :D
Please don’t get the idea that I was knocking anybody’s truly held faith. I was just saying that it’s kinda wasted on such as I. I’d prefer chocolate! ;)
Although I also am a non theist, I still belong to the Unitarian Universalist church. I haven’t attended since I moved here, but was active in Cincinnati and Detroit. It’s a big tent, and the denomination is very socially active and liberal.
Their comfort phrase is one I use. “Thoughts of concern and healing” conveys the sentiment without the God talk.
So Peggy, whatever your current sorrow, my thoughts of concern and healing go to you.
no they don’t, do they ?!?! My deja wont quit vuing !
We’ll have to see what the schedule looks like. I think the appointment is at 11:20 and it usually takes about an hour.
Hi ya, toocuteforwords!
I guess this is my morning to be green. Om Ali says she’s expecting (ahem) family news to be announced at Thanksgiving.
(putting on my whine) I wanna come to ScooterBoy’s party. (stamping my foot) How come so many of my fdl friends live in, near or around Austin?
Maybe the universe really is nuding me to move there. This is just not the time economically for us to transplant. Maybe when things get better.
pluuuuuuus…..I’ve gotta get some bloodwork done first which means fasting. I’ll probably stop somewhere in Austin after seeing the doc to eat before heading back home.
I would never think that. You are most proactive about respecting others’ choices. I’m saying that I’ve changed. I’m supposed to grow, right? *g*
Because it’s the one island of near sanity for at least a thousand miles in any direction?
I think we all are sweet demi! :)
ROTFLMAO! Blast that incessant deja anyway!
I think so. I just wish a lot of my growth wouldn’t happen around my waist. Ah, Peggy, you’re such a great person and a wonderful friend.
Anyhoo. Sorry I was late. I’m going to get started though as usual I’ll check back frequently for a bit. Email me cbl and we’ll discuss.
Thanks for saying that, it’s a super appropriate and welcome balm for my
bruisedcrushed, burned, vacuum dessicated and blown up ego. I think the world of you too. :)wish you could be here too !
looks around for scooter boy . . . Cake is top secret – will have to make and decorate in the night :D will send you deets via FB
I think I’m going to tackle my pile of dirty dishes now. Literally, not figuratively, although there’s always some of that to work on too.
Sending you a bar of chocolate, your choice, and a big old Girl Friend Hug.
I’ll be talking to you soon enough.
Coolio.
What do you mean the cake’s a secret? Not anymore! Unlike Vegas, things that are said or happen here, go viral.
See yaz later.
Thanks, Elliott!
