Bloomberg has a great story about how Newt lobbied shilled for the institution he blames for the financial crisis – to the tune of $1.6M.
Newt Gingrich made between $1.6 million and $1.8 million in consulting fees from two contracts with mortgage company Freddie Mac, according to two people familiar with the arrangement.
The total amount is significantly larger than the $300,000 payment from Freddie Mac that Gingrich was asked about during a Republican presidential debate on Nov. 9 sponsored by CNBC, and more than was disclosed in the middle of congressional investigations into the housing industry collapse.
Newt told Bloomberg that he was paid for “strategic advice” (last we checked, it was for being an “historian“) — and this morning, a New York Times reporter followed up on that.
Trip Gabriel: “Do you recall any of the strategic advice you did give?…Expanding housing for low-income Hispanic communities, for example?”
Gingrich: “Well, first of all, if you can do it in a way that is financially sound, every American should be interested in expanding housing opportunities for people whether they’re African American, or Latino or of any background so the idea that you’re thinking about how can we help people learn how to budget, how can we help people learn how to save, how could you help them learn how to maintain a house on a low income would strike me, for more people, would be good things to do, not bad things to do and I’m happy to say I made public speeches to the National Association of Home Builders. I’m in favor of the largest possible home ownership. This is all public knowledge. I’m in favor of doing the right kind of things and you can go talk to Rick Lazio about the support I gave him as speaker on housing reform which he pushed through despite opposition of some of the people like Barney Frank and others, so I think the record there is one of I’m pretty consistent and frankly, I tend to give the same strategic advice in private I give in public.”
Uh…what?
When Newt starts tossing word salads like The Quitter, you know he’s in trouble.

About Firedoglake
Doesn’t matter to the base. He’s the NotShittens of the month, until Santorum emerges from the rear.
What stage of grief are the teabaggers in? Seem to be stuck on denial.
Ugh. He creeps me out, he really does. I don’t believe a word that comes out of his mouth.
Eye of Newt, Tongue of Cain, Claws of Perry, Gall of Bachman…
I call buillshit!
Fannie and Freddie just like it more when Newt whispers it to them, special.
You beat me to it. I was going to quote the same line and then ask: If that’s the case, why would Freddie pay him anything. (rhetorical Q)
Thanks. I thought it was just. I have always been creeped out by this…..uh……how can I put it…..CREEP. He’s just ……CREEPY. The rest of the GOP Clown Car is full of people that are just plaing too stoopid to really be dangerous. Bachmann, Santorum, Perry, the pizza man. Time has proven they have or will all self-destruct. HUntsman and Romney, of course, stand out, but people with more than half a brain don’t seem to appeal to most of the GOP “rank and file. And some of those people are REALLY RANK.
But Gingrich….this guys is tres dangerouse. He snookered Fannie/Freddie/US out of $1.6 million and “admitted” to only $300K. Devious, despicable, dishonest bastard.
Gingrich is a complete sleazebag.
Eh? Doesn’t this just fall under ye olde: IOKIYAR??
Conservatives/libertarians/TeaPartiers love to froth & foam at the mouth about Fannie & Freddie bc they’re so socialamalistictism or something. But if the 1%ers at the top of Fannie & Freddie get huge ginourmous bonuses, why that’s A-OK bc they’re 1%ers and *deserve* YOUR tax dollar$$ bc, as 1%ers, by definition they “work so hard.”
And if serial family values adulterer Newt gets
bought offpaid huge Tax Dollah$$$$ by Fannie & Freddie: why that’s *excellent* bc, clearly, Newt also *worked so hard* for YOUR tax dollah$$.Whaddaya griping about?? If the 1%ers get money, it’s only *fair & balanced* doncha know??
PTOUI!!!!!!
P.S. do not expect any conservatives to complain about Newt getting
bought offhighly compensated. It’s a feature, not a bug.“He snookered Fannie/Freddie/US out of $1.6 million…”
I don’t think any among the big money boys would call it snookered. At those levels, you’re just exchanging favors.
Just the thought of his mouth being close enough to my ear to whisper makes me gag, though I don’t have to worry about that ever happening.
If I was shallow enough to hook up with someone just for the $$$, I’d have found someone easier to look at.
“…by definition they “work so hard.””
Every time someone in the upper pay brackets says or writes that they work hard for their money, they should be forced to spend one 12-hour day picking cucumbers/beets/beans/strawberries. I’ll bet they would rephrase comments about their work habits. (By the way, strawberries would be my choice, because when it rains you not only get muddy, but you look like you’re bleeding from every pore.)
I would have jumped in earlier but I was trying to figure out how to get Fanny to pay me 1.6 mill. No ideas yet. I suppose I could tell ‘em not to buy the shit BoA or GS has been sellin for years. Right, prolly wouldn’t work.
Thanks for the post BT.
We have a winner.
Are you sayin Newt isn’t even good lookin enough to be a wart on the ass of homely?
Howdy, pardner.
Let them lying bastards keep their evil money.
We are rich beyond their imaginations, with our loved ones and all.
I was looking for Franklin Raines names as a D who benefited mightily from heading Fannie, and lookie what else my google found.
IOKIYAD too.
So, he just called in a few IOU’s? Probably right. After all, Freddie/Fannie lost BILLION$$$$$ of our money. What’s a paltry $1.6 Mil.
Precisely so. But, that’s just my personal take. You know, to each his own. Yeah, right….ha, ha, ha.
I guess they hate big government other than big government checks.
Bingo! As in: you scratch my back, and I’ll scratch yours.
I’ve been an investor for many years, and I regularly read corporate/bank annual reports. A lot of the same people show up on Boards. They are all 1% (or .0001%, come to that), and they all make sure that everyone is “taken care of.”
It would make a hell of a lot more sense to believe in Santa Claus than to believe that these CROOKS & LIARS actually, you know, *work* for the money that they RIP OFF the gullible public (in various ways). The concept that they “work so hard” would be risable except that far too many citizens *buy* this concept as some kind of “gospel.” The main stream propoganda machine is very powerful.
Another winnah! bingo!
Are the tea baggers having a hard time getting behind Ricky ? Why ?
Let’s just make it IOIYAAAH. No more R vs. D.
“We are rich beyond their imaginations, with our loved ones and all.”

I won’t argue that. BUT, I could be much HAPPIER with half that, hell, 1/4 of that would be nice. That’s like almost 4 into 16, carry the one, …. damn, almost $280,000.
They are all liars but remember who they are pandering to.
Righty-o, Felix.
I guess they didn’t hear about the tangled web woven.
Don’t get your acronym, so plz splain it to me. I assume it has something to do with the bipartisany thing.
IOKIYAD will still come in handy at times when there is an Obot on the thread.
They would like to follow him. BUt they are afraid if they get too close they might get hit by a ricochet bullet aimed at his foot.
Look at the last two letters, pretend there are ** and **** with them.
Got it.
We could use the “AH” as generic and the “D” and “R” when bransd specific.
I knew you would. I was going to say P for politicians, or L for Lobbyists, but I wanted something that would cover all of them.
When i hear this lying POS it confirms in my mind not to get involved in the political process. I am going to look into volunteering somewhere in St. Louis. And of course there is occupy. March in St. Louis tomorrow I will be there with my video camera. Hopefully a diary as well.
O help me to Learn, Great White Daddy .. *puke*
I would use IOKIYA1%er.
Looking forward to your video.
Yes, volunteering has many rewards. Politics, not so much.
I admire that. But I am jumping into the fustercluck to “infiltrate” the system. I am the precinct chairman-designate in my new neighborhood. Just moved. I’m gonna kick ass and take names.
There you are then.
Thanks for pointing out White Man’s Burden. Some of this stuff is so old and (as you put it) pukeable, I don’t even think of making it explicit any more.
The other thing I thought of when I read those sentences is:
1. No one knows how to budget better than poor people
2. The kind of houses that poor people can afford are nearly impossible to maintain, no matter how good you are at it. Their burden is ten times that of maintaining a reasonable middle class house, and that’s no joke either.
Gotta get the last load out of the dryer. BBL.
You go. If there was a viable local candidate to get involved with I would. But St. Louis politics is corrupt to the core. The proof was last Friday when they dismantled the occupy encampment.
Gonna pick up my daughter from school. Keep fighting and never give up as SD would say.

Paul SimonNewticlesEnjoy your time together.
How’d the painting project go? Did she like it?
No she loved it. She is the light of my life. *g*
Eh, the entire GOP field is oriented around figuring out how much Republicans care about corruption and religion, right? More grist for the “Draft Jeb” movement I’ve been hearing rumblings about.
Couldn’t say. I think they should reach out to him. (Or do a reach around?)
Doesn’t he make you nostalgic for witch apple dolls? Do people still make those?
