Barry McGuire — Eve of Destruction on the NBC music show Hullabaloo (1965).
What’s on your mind?
Hey Suz!
hey newton! how’s the sf bay area tonight?
We’re doing a little basking in the pride following events in Sproul Plaza today and this evening. How’s it up yonder?
Holy cow! I was 13 when this came out and was totally in love with this song. Did some group recently do this?
Aloha, Suz and lln pups…! *g*
No, sorry, I think the redo was “Leader of the Pack.”
ce! how’s cleveland tonight? you thinking of this bon jovi cover?
aloha tut — still soggy in paradise?
I was still a gleam in my Dad’s eye…! ;-)
Halllooo crew! Quite the tune, suz!
Very appropriate given Keith Olberman’s special Comment
Well worth watching more than twice so ya git it in it’s entirety!
Hi LLN Pups..
Heh heh — it was a good time to be a gleam, and not 13. Boy, the sixties were tough.
just saw this picture on twitter from sproul plaza
Kisses, Kelly!
hallllooooo kelly! how’s denver tonight? glad ya like it dood
hey nahant — thanks for the link — i don’t get current on my cable that my landlord provides … i’ll watch it later
how’s deadwood city tonight?
Actually, we had some Sunshine today, drying us out a bit from our recent deluge…! About 9am this morn, Air Force 2, rudely awoke, any and all of Hilo’s sleepy-heads…! The steep climb pattern really produced a lot of noise…!
Bisous à vous! Howzitgoin lady?
Chillin quickly.. Cold rain on it’s way by weekend…
Pretty good.
There is just so MUCH going on. It’s a bit of a wild ride to keep up with everything lately.
i had some today too. was real pretty today but definitely had the calm before the storm feel. i am supposed to get hammered with a wet windy storm that comes in tomorrow. its 36 outside and the moment and the weather dood said that by friday, there will be snow down to 1,000 to 1,500 ft levels. that’s dayam near snow on the beach *brrrrr*
no air force booms tho :)
I’m preparing for a move of 106,00 books from storage to a new staging area in the basement of the newly created Cleveland Museum of Art atrium basement. We are talking months, and months of moving books. Hey! I’m going to be 60 this year of 2012.
What a great song pick, Suzanne. I hadn’t seen that version of it since I saw it on TV when they did it in 1965.
We were “on the eve of destruction” then. Things haven’t changed much, except how it seems to be coming down. When McGuire sang that song, MLK, RFK and MCX were still alive. Dr. Strangelove and On the Beach – the movies – had just come out.
isn’t it tho! i’v come to the conclusion that i just can’t keep up with it all anymore. i feel like blanche debois depending on the kindness of others to find out the news i’ve missed
et! how was your day? glad ya like the tune — i think it is just as appropriate today. we do seem to be headed backwards lately….
holy moly! i hope you have help!!!
They were tough. But the music, at least, was the best.
hey margot — how’s ohio tonight?
We have a great team. About 20 of us. Just do it.
Ohio is like springtime, warm and windy and rainy. I had to slap at a mosquito…it’s November, jeez!
Loved them. And “Leader of the Pack.”
At occupy Wasilla it is minus 2 F and blowing 30, gusting 50. Had a great day at work, though. Ms ET hurt her knee at work in a small Native village yesterday evening. Got excellent care, but she might need surgery.
You betcha.
I was sposed to g’thud at 10 here, but damn if that danged Suz don’t keep me up sometimes.
We used this in ’71 as the end song to a high school history final group presentation about Vietnam. I led the group, as I had lived there.
I picked the tune, and the final slide, which was a shot of the Jeff Airplanes Crown Of Creation cover pic.
Said Pic.
I had slides from 54-63 that my pops had, we used them all to discuss the history of the country, the cultures, the geography, and more. I had a thousand slides and more to wade thru my pops had made available for my project.
I wrote the script and narration, someone else did the narration.
We got a standing ovation, all A’s from the team of 7, and it was one of my finest moments . . .
Them kids and teachers (team teacher class was really kewl) learnt more about Vietnam than they ever knew or heard about on the radio and tv . . . it was college level info in a junior level hi school class . .
*G*
As to the diary . . . . that tune remains one of the most spine tingling and bone chilling protest songs of all times.
I bow to The Suz for this one.
Guess I’m still up . . . lol
it was like that here last week and now its forking winterish
*heh* We’re definitely at a similar Cusp, ET…! ;-)
oh no.. i hope ms et has a speedy recovery and an surgical intervention is arthroscopic
hey larue — how’s sac tonight? glad ya like it dood
My fervent hopes for a speedy recovery for the Missus, ET…! *g*
Your work on that excel/powerpoint show about Income Inequality was awesome . . . I asked about the skill sets ya had to do that, the production of it and all . . . if ya ever have time . . . I’d LOVE to learn of it even from a simple base level, know yer busy.
Ya do good for humans hoss, thanks for all ya do.
*bows*
Yes. And Society’s Child
Heh, I’ll catch ya in 2013 . . . n I’m SURE we will both feel like 30 most of the time . . . cuz that’s what we do.
*G*
*hugs*
Yer a LIVELY 59, I might add . . . ;-)
here’s barry still doing the song with a brief intro
There ya go . . . history. LeSigh what came so soon after, huh.
Thanks for all YOUR work n fonts . . .
From the 50′s beat music and bebop jazz, thru to the early 60′s folk revival and the Dylan’s n the rest and the English Invasion and thru the early to mid 70′s . . . never again will music of such largess of culture, breadth of history, scope of our times politically, never again will that come about . . .
There was a renaissance of creativity from the be boppers to the southern rockers of the 70′s (all led to punk) that just likely can’t be done again . . . it was huge, it shaped humans, it shifted minds.
IT was grand. I love the musics of that period.
*G*
janis ian’s society’s child
Dude Larue,
Love you and need to go to sleep. New tunes tomorrow. Stay strong.
You and me and several other regulars here are from the same fine 1952 vintage.
What’s on my mind? Recall.
Commenting on another thread, just before.

Good morning pups.
Just got back from Occupy Seattle. Lots of ideas swirling in reaction to police brutality across this country and our own city. Many people in my meeting group have noticed that the protestors look at the cops without any fear. In fact, it’s the cops that are acting out of fear.
For example today, a last-minute march in solidarity with OWS led to several incidents where police seemed to panick. Some girl may have stumbled, and the cop, scared, pepper sprayed the shit out her. When others came rushing to move her away from the criminal cop, several other cops surrounded them and pepper sprayed all of them as well.
A lady in her 80′s was directly sprayed in their face. What kind of sick criminal cop would do this?
Brought back a lot of memories that song did.
*G*
Ok here, been kinda warmish, still got maters n basil growin. Some 30′s comin our way TH-Mon . . . night time.
Not sure it’s time to pull it all up yet, but danged close. N then, gotta put it all to bed for the winter . . . some steer manure in the flat places front and back, empty the potted plants.
We were bad, we ate most of our basil so far . . . no pesto in the freezer . . . but a chance to harvest the last of it for maybe a quart.
No where enough for the winter, pesto wise, LeSigh.
Might hafta extend the basil with some of the orange mini tomaters for the pesto . . . I can’t last a winter without the taste of basil or pesto, I just can’t.
*sniff*
A friend was helping a peaceful protestor who was sprayed and getting bludgeoned by bicycles from the cops. When my friend started pulling the guy away, he too got hit several times by these bikes, as if the cops weren’t done beating the other man while he was down.
love child
hey nonq — how was your day?
hey cancercures — terrible, that’s just forking terribe. i heard they also pepper sprayed a pregnant woman
how ya doing tonight?
no pesto? dayam dood *handing ya tissue through the tubes* that’s just so forking wrong for you not to have pesto in the freezer
I agree, but then I’m biased ’cause I’m ‘a woman of a certain age’….just your age, as a matter of fact:)
That is truly sad, cancercures…! There’s no moral explanation for that bullsh*t…!
bob
Steady streams of petition signers and putting names and faces of many progressive and lefty locals together. Satisfying is an understatement.
eddie vedder — society
Yes, pregnant woman, as well as children, and a blind girl.. Well, the blind girl may have been sprayed down in Oakland (where a minister/priest/man-of-cloth was also sprayed).
I am very motivated from sunrise to beyond sunset today. Tomorrow I’m hitting the streets putting up posters for huge demonstrations planned on thursday and saturday.
How are you?
gotta feel good to have the walker recall underway but its not gonna be anywhere near as good as the feeling when that forker is recalled
i’m doing ok, thanks :) have you diaried your seattle experienes over at myfdl? its really easy to do and there is a nifty how to here
CTuttle, at least we still have our tents up in our occupied space. Emotions run high at the camp sometimes, but there’s lots of love to diffuse our situations. How the cops reacted to us brings us together closer than before.
What we need, is more outreach. Polls show that the majority of people are pissed off at how the banks and government have railroaded this country. We need to make inroads into that -now- . And we need to work on alternative candidates across the board. I can’t believe that (D)mayors across this country (elected by Democrats, liberals, left-leaning folk) are coordinating attacks on peaceful protestors and the constitution.
From a friend who works with unions, it sounds like a lot of union support will be joining us on Thursday (2 month anniversary), and on saturday (A walk for ‘Jobs, not Cuts’ where we target the Federal building downtown seattle with our message crafted especially for Patty Murray, who is the Co-Chair on the Supercommittee. We will target her with our message – Do the right thing – jobs, not cuts.
*editted to remove some bias – I can’t speak for unions or how they will react if she makes cuts through her co-chair position.
in the ghetto
thanks for the suggestions suzanne, I will record one after thursdays march, and possibly saturdays.
Heh, FM transistor, ear phone, walkin the foggy streets of San Mateo as an early teen . . . yep, Janis had that tune pegged for revolution amongst the pre teen and teens.
Same time roughly, as your featured vid tune.
N Beau Brummels, Ithcygoo Park with Faces, Rain N Park N Other Things, Get Together, Wendy/Cherish by Association, n a few dozen other AM/FM hits as that was bout the time FM radio began it’s move onto AM . . . and in a few years post ’65, radio was dead on AM.
N in SF Bay Area there was begat KMPX, then KSAN, bless Tom n Rachel Donahue and those who worked with them (Scoop Nisker n so many more).
LeSigh, pre teens thru teens and early adult, the finest music of our lives on all the airwaves, tv shows, and in the venues and clubs around us when we could sneak in or go with out siblings until we were older.
It was an incredible time, n if one goes back to the ’20′s and brings THAT forward, it all spans some what, 5 generations now?
*G*
But them boomer times, they was special. Epic. ’63 thru oh, ’74 or so.
Epic.
sweet! when you write you diary, can ya send me an email at suzanne at firedoglake dot com so i can read it, tweet it and recommend it to help spread the message

neil young — rocking in the free world
The first thing that Hilo’s GA Politics Working Group addressed was supplanting our current Mayor Billy Kenoi with a real Progressive in Dominic Yagong…! We’re certainly not loafing around…! ;-)
Dang and the flights there were worrin ya.
Best wishes to her, and heal quickly . . .
You all be well.
Yes.
I’ve always felt that way.
Hanky welcomed, *sniff*

hiya ppd — how was your day?
Dang and the flights there were worrin ya.
Especially with the mother of all storms bearing down on Alaska at the time…!
I am taking my voice (explaining the signing procedure) and my brain to bed. Fighting this hired agent for the Koch bros and the field testing of A.L.E.C. legislative propositions in WI, makes this recall the most important action I can be taking, right now, (well, after a few hours of shut-eye). :^)
I do so appreciate your hosting, and FDL, to have a place to regularly bounce a thought or two and to keep learning.
LORD that and a few other older Woody Guthrie songs are what protest songs are all about.
N Seegar, Weavers, The Wobblies, IWW that is (they got a song book), Utah Phillips . . . Waist Deep In The Big Muddy N The Big Phool SAYS PUSH ON.
They was just deportees, sang Joan B, long ago . . .
g’nite nonq — tis my pleasure and i’m honored that i get to host
pretty good, thanks Suzzz – how’s everything up north tonight?
ohmystars, jon stewart is just ripping on that sandusky interview today….
forking cold… 34* at the moment
Plenty of material to work with…!
So What?
*G*
There’s another older Ghetto song or post Presley tune about Ghetto.
Can’t recall it, total black soul based tune . . . maybe In The Ghetto? Dang, should be easy on my memory . . . Ronnie Laws? Dang.
Draw yer chops Suz, hep a poor boy out on this . . . talkin bout the ghetto . . . LeSigh.
Now you men listen. Don’t be going around punching women in the face, unless you’re a cop.
The Punch Felt Around the World

That’s still above freezing, M’dear…! (ducking…)
We won’t see 38F till Thursday or Friday nite.
N lower 30′s Sat-Sun.

Not that I know . . . that jazz tune is class as is the album Swiss Movement.
But there’s still, a tune, called In The Ghetto, someone did.
Donny Hathaway, maybe? Black artist, who knows, song is strong in my memory, I KNOW I have vinyl of this, but I don’t have it in my digital stuff to search . . .

Leonard Cohen – BIRD ON THE WIRE lyrics
Like a bird on the wire,
like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free.
Like a worm on a hook,
like a knight from some old fashioned book
I have saved all my ribbons for thee.
If I, if I have been unkind,
I hope that you can just let it go by.
If I, if I have been untrue
I hope you know it was never to you.
Like a baby, stillborn,
like a beast with his horn
I have torn everyone who reached out for me.
But I swear by this song
and by all that I have done wrong
I will make it all up to thee.
I saw a beggar leaning on his wooden crutch,
he said to me, “You must not ask for so much.”
And a pretty woman leaning in her darkened door,
she cried to me, “Hey, why not ask for more?”
Like a bird on the wire,
like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free.
Aloha, stanchaz…! An awesome song indeed…! Bird on the Wire…
Please help.
