Continuing from the Dissenter thread, once I heard the full scoop I realized it was Occupy Honolulu but for a few minutes I was afraid for you. Some of these occupies are allowed to do their own thing, and others aren’t. Orlando seems to go with the flow and keeps doing it’s thing.
I’ve been storming over how to tap into more support for OWS and more action against Wall Street, especially in the heartland. Is it time for Wallmart workers to unionize? can the Teamsters make inroads to the non union truckers working for Wallmart and other non union big box stores?
Are more general strikes the direction we need? Shut down the movement of capital really pinches the 1 percent.
A great action was Move Your Money. People anywhere could move their business out of banks.
Furthermore, using the powerful ‘MIC CHECK’ to disrupt our opponents is a great way to directly shame them. It can also and should also be used against our supposed ‘allies’ to steer them into supporting us not just with words, but by using their political power to make immediate changes.
About the only disappointing part of the Hilo GA was the ‘tabling’ of the site location etc. of actually Occupying…! The majority was behind it, but, we bogged down on the location…! 8-(
My 80-year-old mother moved her money, although from a community bank to a CU. I’m not entirely sure where she got the idea (she doesn’t usually listen to me and she’s a fundie and I’m not). Talk about my chin hitting the floor. And we discussed her discussing the rest of her money issues with the CU as she still has money in ML.
When I went into a local store where I buy plumbing parts often, one of the workers asked me if I was “famous, on TV recently.” I told them that I was arrested, and they were all cheering. We had a brief chat about the reasons for it, and they were all very excited to talk about it. The 99% are everywhere!
For the past month, or at least since the beginning of the OWS movement, whenever a friend, acquaintance, or someone I meet out walking the dog complain about their current state affairs, even if it’s just bitching over the price of milk, my answer has been “we are the 99%”. Drill it into everyone’s head.
That’s great, glad it went well. I think our group is starting to organize more regular actions, and we will be doing some meetings with people in other parts of town soon. I am hoping maybe I will be able to ride the bus tomorrow to talk to people and find out their issues and how they perceive our movement.
I’d mentioned to a clerk at my local shoppette that I was headed to the GA and he’d asked straight away, we have one here…? Told him all about it and told him to checkout our facebook page..! I was fascinated that the majority of the participants were either old(protested against Nam), or College aged, I was one of the few tweeners…! ;-)
Everybody can get into the movement. . .one thing I am noticing is that the meetings can really get bogged down. It is good when there are affinity groups that can organize actions and then bring them to the group.
I visited Occupy Santa Fe on Friday. SF has a supportive Mayor, and there are about 25 camping tents plus a big heated tent and some other large tents as well as porta potties. but I also heard there are a lot of Rainbow Family people there who want to talk about the Grateful Dead. . .I don’t know if that is true. I met some nice people there, and they are quite committed.
Aloha, open, that’s true…! What a great mix of people with a wide range of talents…! We’ve got some great people tackling many of the issues that need to be addressed on the various Working Groups… I’m spearheading the Legal group, Palestine, and taking part with the Logistics group…!
Hi CT been interesting day speaking with National Lawyers Guild attorneys. Had me ask the Public Defender the local court procedure on booking, charging and releasing activists.
He cited some supreme court case 1984 Clark versus Communities for Non Violence 468 US288 they lost but said other individuals could win. So that Occupations that are free speech may have the appearance of camping while occupying. Must be argued at each venue.
Also charges are limited to infraction (Ticket) or misdameanor (arrest. This poses a problem of a revolving door clogging the system as many are willing to do jail.
Government is strapped for funds.
Aloha, bb…! I’m in the process of contacting the NLG myself… I called the LA NLG and they referred me to Avi in the NYC NLG… It was too late today for me to talk to him so I’ll be trying again tomorrow..!
“getting bogged down” oh yeah takes a lot of patients to get through.
We formed a core group as the transient homeless take over the GA. We meet snd discuss actions that will get out the message instead of arguing about the people living on site. One attorney for NLG said it is a huge problem everywhere.
They will come whether you like it or not. They are needy and a campsite with food and facilities is an irresistible draw. They will bring along all their issues, mental, poverty, alcohol and meth, fights etc. If you plan and prepare instead of just occupy you will have a better outcome.
Essentially you will be proving homeless services. Hopefully they will not be violent and their numbers will control the GA. Good luck.
Solid plan and Occupy observers to enforce “Good Neighbor policy” or whatever rules you have. Since you will be on public property anyone else has a right to be there. Do it right from the git go. Take your time. Winter is not so much a problem for the Islands cept a lot of rain.
I was thinking today about how grateful I am to you and Edward Teller for keeping us schooled on the Palestinian Troubles. I’m glad it’s part of the program.
My idea of Van, still. But the memory is long, from Them, to Brown Eyed Girl, Moondance, n then, on and on like Astral WORKS and beyond . . .
One of the greatest, and definitely underrated . . . his body of work moved and moves thru so much music and such, and it’s all HIS, written, organized, orchestrated . . . he was and remains, fastidious about his music, bless him.
Hey, guys, our own (tho rarely seen lately) RevDebM tweeted the link to a good article on handling the (ahem) a**holes at Occupies, based on experience from 40 or so years ago. Some problems recur:
These issues are challenging Occupy nation wide, they have hurt Occupy Sac, and well, they all need to be addressed.
Who will care for the homeless, the mentally ill, the drug addicted, on the streets, if the state will not? Who will care for them?
N how do we protect those who WOULD care for these people, when the state won’t, and won’t support or defend or protect those who WOULD serve the homeless, mentally ill and drug addidted?
Who?
Bless CT n BBro and other FireBaggers who continue to ring this bell, discuss it, and deal with it, bless you folks and all of Occupy.
Yass yass yass, so MANY Van tunes on that ONE project.
Aloha hoss, sounds like yer Occupy has a LOT of Bahai behind it, n that’s good for the 99%, well doing CT, well doing.
Sac is suffering . . . but it’s time to pull back IMHO, lick wounds, gather and communicate, and plan for Spring.
So many folks have writ great summaries of what Occupy National N Global has done . . . I’m sure you and Pups have read it all . . . now to lay back some and regroup, heal, and prepare.
Spring comes again.
*G*
“Half a mile from the county fair
N the rain came fallin down.”
On any island or mainland, the story remains the same.
Every note, every break, every lick, is properly choreographed, written in the sheets and played exactly, or yer fired.
N other n what Butterfield used to organize, Morrison is one musician and band leader I totally respect cus he HEARD every not and bar and measure and lick in his head.
Like the classic music writers did.
N that’s a gift few have n Morrison had it really early on with Them.
It’s awesome to see the sheer amount of wisdom that’s being shared on line to so many diverse peoples and regions…! Most of the Hilo crew have read much of the NYC #OWS literature…!
I suggested to Sac Occu they pull back and give up the park, give up the daily Occupy for now, and plan strategic and specific demonstrations thru out the winter to solidify the ranks, keep the continuity, and diffuse the criticism of the local media.
Let it build, as 2012 is gonna be ugly and the people will flow to the ranks of Occupy unless it’s fully tarnished . . . . and the MSM is trying HARD to tarnish it.
Time to pull back hoss . . . in most places.
In YOUR Island, it would seem to be time to press on . . . agreed.
On the mainland, hoss, time to pull back and do daily stuff, forget about sleep overs and city councils and law enforcement actions.
The cold sets in, the 1% are retaliating.
Now is the time to forment daily unpredictable action for short periods of time, in The Occupy Name.
Come spring, overnights become the issue . . . just my humble opinion.
Excellent foundation. And working groups can tackle task with unemployed skilled folks. Web sites, networks, knowledge links on issues, outreach to key players and officials. With the freedom we exercise no task is to big.
Moondance…
Continuing from the Dissenter thread, once I heard the full scoop I realized it was Occupy Honolulu but for a few minutes I was afraid for you. Some of these occupies are allowed to do their own thing, and others aren’t. Orlando seems to go with the flow and keeps doing it’s thing.

Aloha, cancercures…! We had about 35 people show up for our first official Hilo General Assembly…! What a blast…! ;-)
How did the stacking go?
My 80-year-old mother moved her money, although from a community bank to a CU. I’m not entirely sure where she got the idea (she doesn’t usually listen to me and she’s a fundie and I’m not). Talk about my chin hitting the floor. And we discussed her discussing the rest of her money issues with the CU as she still has money in ML.
And she thinks it’s great I’m out protesting-my head is spinning.
When I went into a local store where I buy plumbing parts often, one of the workers asked me if I was “famous, on TV recently.” I told them that I was arrested, and they were all cheering. We had a brief chat about the reasons for it, and they were all very excited to talk about it. The 99% are everywhere!
Aloha, bg…! It went smoothly…! Only had to step in a couple of times to intervene and ensure some order…!
For the past month, or at least since the beginning of the OWS movement, whenever a friend, acquaintance, or someone I meet out walking the dog complain about their current state affairs, even if it’s just bitching over the price of milk, my answer has been “we are the 99%”. That is the beauty of the thing, the 99% are really all over the place, and people are starting to pay more attention.

Very cool! I think it’s possibly better to get bogged down on the location at the initial meeting than to pick the wrong locale. imho.
Thank you.
Some Jimmie Rodgers… In the Jailhouse Now…
Exactly, but they have to be reminded of that fact. I mean, if my 80 year old fundy mother has noticed…
With that I have to go to bed, start some major dental work tomorrow, too early in the morning for my sorry self.
Aloha, open, that’s true…! What a great mix of people with a wide range of talents…! We’ve got some great people tackling many of the issues that need to be addressed on the various Working Groups… I’m spearheading the Legal group, Palestine, and taking part with the Logistics group…!

Mahalo, bb…! I hope to get some referrals for local Attorneys that are NLG members here, to at least be Legal Observers, if not more…! ;-)

We’ve already have two licensed Social Workers on board with one specializing in the Homeless…! ;-)

Very nice, we offered that but were turned down. Some people do not want case management as it comes with trade offs.
I was thinking today about how grateful I am to you and Edward Teller for keeping us schooled on the Palestinian Troubles. I’m glad it’s part of the program.
Email the guy he is happy to answer questions.
You can make up a committee on any issue you have!
“cept a lot of rain”. There’s an understatement uttered in good weather! :)
Winter is not so much a problem for the Islands cept a lot of rain.
*heh* It poured buckets all day…! We waved umbrellas and signs today…! ;-)
I was surprised when over half the participants were immediately on board for my Palestinian Working group…! It certainly made my day…! ;-)
Good night, all.
Time to hit the couch.
I need a new Netflix series to get into. I miss Battlestar Gallactica!
Sweet dreams.
You’d be thrilled that most of the group were farmers and the Sustainable Ag Working group was the most popular by far…! ;-)
