The number of Americans receiving food stamps reached a record 45.8 million in August, the government said.
The figure was 1.1 percent higher than the previous month and 8.1 percent more than a year earlier, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said today in a report on its website…
And, of course, that economic panacea Texas – as asserted by Rick Perry – leads the way.
Texas had the most food-stamp recipients in August, at 4.12 million, followed by California with 3.82 million, according to the USDA. Spending was a record $6.13 billion.
Quite an accomplishment considering that the oft maligned “liberal-basket-case” California has 12 million more people.
But we better cut the program as an apology to the bankers and Mayor Bloomberg.

Thanks for this post.
O/t: Julian Assange loses appeal to not be extradited.
And undocumented immigrants are not eligible for food stamps, either.
Oh SNAP, it’s another Texas Miracle, I tells ya.
The food stamp indicator does not reflect the greater number of people who survive using regional food banks and kitchens.
HOW the hell do they get away with siting the first first coparison without pointing out the second
Good morning all,
Is it still a recession/repression or is it depression/repression now ?
Was there an admission of a depression the last time around by the “authorities” that “lead ” us ?
Good morning, pups. It’s Dowd and Friedman today. In “Cain Not Able” MoDo is going to ‘splain Herman Cain’s media narrative for us: from “is he legitimate?” to “will this ruin his legitimacy?” The Moustache of Wisdom is in Agra, India. The son of a bitch all of a sudden is an authority on history. Or maybe he’s read him some Kipling (about damn time for that)… In “A Long List of Suckers” he’s decided to offer us a refresher on the history of “The Great Game” — the struggle for supremacy in Central Asia. He says it shows that no one ever wins for long. I don’t recall any of this vast knowledge of his being trotted out during the Bush Era… Fucker.
Here they are.
The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve got a variety of bagels with cream cheese. I see from the above that “The Texas Miracle” continues apace… I’m going to shuffle off to the kitchen for more tea in an attempt to pry my eyelids open. (MoDo and Tommy are much easier to deal with if your eyes are closed.) Have a great day.
tjbs I have to tell you that point is brilliant and nobody that I’ve seen has ever brought it up
this is indeed a depression, that point has been made many times however I have never seen anyone point out that it’s actually a repression too, a deliberate depresssion brought on by policies that have always had a track record of failure, it becomes a deliberate repression.
I will make that point from now on
Lot of people around here, especially those with families, use the food banks to supplement food stamps. With current prices, you’re not going to eat every day with just food stamps.
Boxturtle (Everybody should skip a meal a day to keep the 1%er’s taxes down)
Yesterday at MSNBC.com there were three stories up about Cain’s accusers, his evolving excuses and the story of his alleged sexual harassment of two female staffers but not one about the alleged illegal campaign assistance/donations from a tax free organization, founded by one of his staffers. In depth reporting on the lurid, sex case but not one peep about the case that’s symptomatic of how corrupt our political system has become. Par for the course when you’re dealing with the msm.
The more I think about how that scandal came to light, the more I think that Rove is working for Mitt.
Boxturtle (Dunno if Mitt is aware that Rove is working for him)
Wouldn’t surprise me. Rove LOATHES Perry…
No matter how Rove feels about Perry, I’m sure he recognizes that Willard is the only candidate to date that has a chance of defeating Obama. I was talking about Cain though. Who also has no chance in a general.
Be darned! Rove and I agree on something.
Boxturtle (Given that Rover attacked Cain rather than Perry, What’sthat say about Perry’s chances?)
Tan, rested and ready.
Perry does not now, nor has he ever had the chops to run for President, not to mention having so many skeletons. I’m sure Rove knows that too. Why waste time and resources discrediting someone like that?
Isn’t it too late for him to run? I mean the primaries are soon to start and I know there’s some kind of filing deadline.
Yeah, you would think. But Perry’s campaign seemed to come out of thin air, so anything’s possible.
The only real drawback is Jeb’s last name. Maybe he should change it to Smith.
The real game changer is if China gets nuclear weapons.

Good morning, all.
An observation, sorry for the OT …
One notes that the government of Greece is going to permit the people of Greece to vote on whether they should accept … austerity … one further notes that the American government did not permit the American people to vote about … austerity.
It is being said that the Greeks are being permitted to engage in … democracy.
Democracy is NOT something a government “permits” the people to engage in …
Real democracy is NOT a word … it is an activity.
A government which will not “permit” that activity to take place … is a tyranny … and such a government may “rule” ONLY through the use of brute force. NOT through the Rule of Law, but of and by the rule of men … men who rule through violence and intimidation.
To a people who truly embrace democracy, such a government, which governs without the consent of its people … is not legitimate … and such a government does not deserve to survive.

Fuck austerity, fuck the Euro, fuck Germany.
Those dog gone pesky people of a country like Greece. Just when the banksters were going in for the final kill. How dare those people.
I would like you to think I’m an original thinker but credit goes to Cheech and Chong on their song about Santa.
Without o charging bush jr for his many war crimes 1/2 the country must believe bush/cheney turned back the Islamic tidal wave by himself. So he cracked a couple of eggs to make that omelet, they were Muslim eggs.
They are even on the TV bragging about their turning the country medieval to stop the Islamic onslaught.
Whatever the country says about bush wlll be discerned by the Diebold machines.
Everyone’s working for Mitt except Huntsman and Paul. Palin, Bachmann, Perry, and Cain divided the Tea Party and made them waste their time and energy. Any other realistic candidates were shooed or bribed away.
Now it’s too late for anyone but ROMney. “Jine up and git in line” starts soon.
A far more meaningful metric is the number of people on assistance as a percentage of total state population. As others have pointed out, California has a significantly larger population than Texas, and yet has fewer people on food stamps than Texas. But that might be construed as
actual journalismliberal bias. What austerity??? The US government spent 3.6 trillion fiscal 2011, the most ever up from 3.4 trillion fiscal 2010. Last I looked unemployment still is at 9%. That spending’s really working…
Spending on bailing out banksters, spending on overseas adventures, and spending on Haliburton, Lockheed-Martin, and GE isn’t very efficient, you’re right.
OTH, direct hiring a la a permanent WPA would be a very efficient way to set things right. You know, cutting out pricey middlemen who contribute nothing is always a smart thing to do.
-stewartm
I would guess, stewartm, that you and I are in complete agreement …
Suppose “the people” were to hold a referendum … which choice might they, now, make?
As opposed to allowing “those who know better” to continue to impose austerity on “the people” and to continue to heap largess on the 1%.
What would democracy do?
What would tyranny do?
Which “system” does America currently “have”?
