We the 99% Demand a Totally Different Budget

By: David Swanson Wednesday October 19, 2011 5:00 pm

We can fit our demands on a bumpersticker: “Majority Rule” or “People Over Profits” or “Love Not Greed.” But we don’t want to. Our government is doing everything wrong, and we should be allowed to present the full list of grievances. We can, however, give the world a thousand words’ worth in an image, a pie chart to be exact. Our federal budget funds the wrong things. We want it to fund the right things.

The Laughter Curve

By: TBogg Wednesday October 19, 2011 4:15 pm

I particularly enjoyed Laffer’s contention that businesses will no longer hire lawyers & lobbyists, which would probably be true for about seven hours before they would start complaining that 9% is onerous and socialist and with those dollars they could be creating even more jobs!

Occupy Wall Street Inspiring New Ways of Thinking About Protest Movements

By: David Dayen Wednesday October 19, 2011 3:31 pm

Occupy Wall Street has an ad. It’s a 30-second spot with members of the protest movement explaining their perspective, why they are in Zuccotti Park, simply and clearly. And it’s set to run on national television, thanks to a savvy crowd-funding group:

By: David Dayen Wednesday October 19, 2011 2:45 pm

A stunning new GAO report prompted by Bernie Sanders shows there’s not much distance between the big financial institutions on Wall Street and the Federal Reserve system, particularly when it comes to the directors of the regional banks GAO found multiple Regional Bank directors with direct conflicts of interests.

Herman Cain Knows Marketing

By: Jon Walker Wednesday October 19, 2011 2:15 pm

Herman Cain may have very limited political experience and lack policy depth, but so far, he’s proven to be a master at branding himself. When asked to use one word to describe the candidate, voters’ top answer for Herman Cain is 9-9-9. This is an impressive messaging accomplishment.

Massachusetts Supreme Court Blows Whistle on How the Banks Broke the Housing Market

By: David Dayen Wednesday October 19, 2011 1:30 pm

The Massachusetts Supreme Court ruled yesterday that a homeowner who bought a foreclosure that hadn’t been properly conducted by the foreclosing bank in 2006 didn’t have legal ownership of the property. That ruling means the banks have clouded the title to homes sales all over the country and may have destroyed much of the legal foundation for the housing market.

By: Jon Walker Wednesday October 19, 2011 1:00 pm

Malaria has been a terrible scourge on humanity literally since the beginning of our species. Why the Religious Right Can’t Keep Paul Cameron “In the Closet”

By: Alvin McEwen Wednesday October 19, 2011 11:30 am

An old adversary of the gay community, Paul Cameron, is taking a trip to Moldavia to lobby for anti-gay legislation. Every lie, every piece of distorted or junk science about the gay community, even some ways in which religious right groups distort actual science to demonize the gay community were either formulated or “improved upon” by Paul Cameron.
