Greek MPs ignored a 48-hour general strike, the first in the country in decades, and a march of nearly 100,000 on the Parliament building, by preparing to approve another round of austerity measures that continue to cripple the world’s oldest democracy.

Multiple Reports Say Gadhafi Captured in Libya. UPDATE: Death Official. |
| By: David Dayen Thursday October 20, 2011 6:58 am |
Reports coming from Libya have been notoriously sketchy, so some caution should be exercised. Plus, Seif al-Islam al-Gadhafi got away from capture after the rebels left him in a room with an underground tunnel, so even if this story is correct it may not be the end of the story. But all reports from Sirte today indicate that Moammar Gadhafi, who ruled Libya for over four decades, has been captured and, according to some reports, killed, as the Libyan rebels took control of Sirte, the final holdout among major cities in the country.
Rita Diller Hates Healthy Women, Contraception, Children… |
| By: TBogg Thursday October 20, 2011 6:11 am |
Rita Diller is the National Director of American Life League’s Stop Planned Parenthood project, which is to say that Ms. Diller is highly invested in denying healthcare to other women because those women might possibly be caring for their bodies in ways in which Ms. Diller doesn’t approve. As Planned Parenthood celebrates it’s 95th birthday this week, Ms. Diller is getting ladywood over the fact that PP is closing facilities, making it more difficult for women to get the low-cost healthcare at a time when it is desperately needed by everyone. Rita seems particularly proud of the damage she is inflicting upon women in her native Texas.

“Bradlee Dean wants it both ways: he wants to be a public and private citizen. Bradlee Dean wants to be a prominent, public figure when he broadcasts on AM 1280 every week and delivered a prayer at the Minnesota Legislature and gives speeches at Tea Party rallies. The courts should not grant him the same right to privacy that a private citizen enjoys. But, Bradlee Dean is too chicken to take criticism for his incendiary, bigoted statements he has made on his websites and on the public airways, so he and his ministry files complaints with the police, You Tube and with the courts.”
Occupy LA Day 19: Comic Jeff Ross Rallies Some Laughs |
| By: Lisa Derrick Wednesday October 19, 2011 7:15 pm |
Stand-up comedian Jeff Ross, best known for his super insulting celebrity roasts, stopped by Occupy LA for a quick set peppered with obligatory jokes about the smell (even though there isn’t any, it keeps getting mentioned) and the place looking like a Phish concert, interspersed with inspirational words and some cracks at Oprah and the banks. Ross had the help of a local homeless guy whose wisecracks, heckling and goofing off were pure comic genius.
Romney Gives the Game Away on Undocumented Question |
| By: David Dayen Wednesday October 19, 2011 6:30 pm |
Though most analysts agree that Mitt Romney is a superior debater compared to his colleagues running for President and that he generally wipes the floor with them, nobody will see greater repercussions for a statement than Romney from last night, when he admitted that his personal self-interest basically trumps everything else.
Are You ‘Going Purple’ Against Bullying for Spirit Day on Thursday? |
| By: Pam Spaulding Wednesday October 19, 2011 5:45 pm |
Spirit Day was founded last year by teenager Brittany McMillan as a simple but powerful way to show support for LGBT young people and to honor those who had been lost. The idea is for people to display the color purple, which symbolizes “spirit” on the rainbow flag, as a way of showing LGBT youth that people in their communities and throughout the country want to show them love and support, right now.
