You Can’t Pull Out of Iraq, For Pete’s Sake. I’m Running for Office

By: TBogg Friday October 21, 2011 3:30 pm

Unlikable once and future presidential candidate Mitt Romney does not like the idea that President Obama is bringing our boys (none of whom incidentally is named Tagg, Josh, Ben, Craig, or Matt Romney) home from Iraq.

Eric Cantor Skips Wharton Inequality Speech Out of Mic Check Fear

By: Scarecrow Friday October 21, 2011 2:40 pm

Eric Cantor, staunch protector of the 1 percent and champion for that portion of the 99 percent duped into protecting the 1 Percent, but ever fearful of the mob, startled a disbelieving Beltway a few days ago by announcing that income and wealth inequality were real problems and that the GOP should do something about that.

But Mr. Cantor bugged out.

Introducing the #OccupySupply Fund

By: Brian Sonenstein Friday October 21, 2011 1:39 pm

I’m really excited to announce the Occupy Supply Fund, a new effort at FDL to truly support the thousands of Occupiers protesting economic injustice and inequality across the country.

100% of donations to the Occupy Supply Fund will be used to purchase and distribute the supplies that occupations have requested. We want to do everything we can to help these demonstrators prepare for the winter and stay in the streets as long as possible.

We’re starting with Occupy DC, and Ryan and Jane will be delivering the items on their list this Sunday, October 23rd. Next week we’ll be taking the Occupy Supply Fund on the road as Kevin Gosztola begins visiting various occupations in the Mid West as part of his continuing live coverage of the movement.

Occupy Wall Street Occupies the Agenda of Manhattan Community Board

By: Kevin Gosztola Friday October 21, 2011 12:59 pm

An unusually dynamic and lively Manhattan Community Board 1 Meeting took place blocks away from Liberty Park yesterday. The Quality of Life/Financial District Committee met to deliberate over Occupy Wall Street and hear remarks from residents. The board members, which have been in support of Occupy Wall Street, have been receiving an increasing amount of complaints about the occupation.

Cain’s Tax and Economic Policies Driving the Republican Race

By: David Dayen Friday October 21, 2011 12:15 pm

What Cain has done on taxes and economic policy is similar to what John Edwards did on health care in 2008. He came out of the box first with a comprehensive plan, and it drew his competition entirely to his left. Even though Cain is being savaged for his wealth redistribution scheme, he’s drawing everyone to his right. Rick Perry’s introducing a flat tax. Mitt Romney endorsed a version of the Paul Ryan plan for Medicare vouchers. It’s become follow-the-leader in the Republican Party, and Cain is the leader. Regressive taxes and wealth distribution upward is the order of the day.

Live Blog for #OWS: Day 35, Bloomberg Says City Will Enforce Laws Requiring Permits

By: Kevin Gosztola Friday October 21, 2011 11:30 am

One week after Occupy Wall Street forced Brookfield Properties to back off of their plans for a “forced cleaning” that would have likely been used to bring an end to the occupation, Mayor Michael Bloomberg is once again publicly denouncing Occupy Wall Street. Bloomberg says the city will begin to enforce laws that supposedly require demonstrators to acquire permits for marches and large gatherings.

Michael Gerson Concern Trolls Obama for Supporting Occupy Wall Street

By: Blue Texan Friday October 21, 2011 10:30 am

Michael Gerson used to work for George W. Bush, so undoubtedly, he has Obama’s best interests in mind when advises him to distance himself from the OWS movement. And if anyone knows what Americans really think, it’s a former Bush administration official.

President Obama Announces Full Withdrawal of US Troops from Iraq

By: David Dayen Friday October 21, 2011 10:15 am

The President has announced the full withdrawal of US military troops from Iraq. This was put out a week ago unofficially, and then Defense Secretary Leon Panetta (who’s a terrible Defense Secretary, by the way) tried half-heartedly to walk it back. But the decision has now been made.

California Approves Cap and Trade System

By: David Dayen Friday October 21, 2011 9:38 am

California’s Air Resources Board has formally approved a cap and trade system to minimize climate change pollution, become the first state in the nation with a cap and trade program. Legislation authorizing a cap and trade system was passed in California back in 2006, but after multiple reviews, the CARB finally approved the program.

SEC Doing Collusion Deals with Big Banks over Dodgy CDO Deals?

By: David Dayen Friday October 21, 2011 8:42 am

I think Felix Salmon uses the right word – collusion. This is regulatory capture of the first order. It’s different from constructing deliberately complex and confusing rules that will never be administered, or just looking the other way at misconduct. This generates the illusion of regulatory enforcement while letting off the offending parties for next to nothing.

The exact same premise is at work with the Obama Justice Department’s attempted get out of jail free card for foreclosure fraud. It certainly makes the banks happy, but it’s also a primary reason why there are protesters in Zuccotti Park and across the country.
