Pat Buchanan keeps his job on MSNBC despite spouting racist claptrap. In fact, Pat still has a fine six (or seven?) figure contract with the cable network despite writing books that have ventured from remaking Hitler to white supremacy. Buchanan’s on a book tour for his book about the good ol’ days of segregation and decided to appear on the talk show “The Political Cesspool” — and a fine example of tolerance it is.

Occupy LA: Now Approaching Its Fourth Week Anniversary |
| By: Lisa Derrick Tuesday October 25, 2011 7:15 pm |
Occupy Los Angeles is feeling the effects, both positive and negative, of its growth. Sanitation costs –hauling out garbage and cleaning the porta potties– are taking up most of the donations, and meals must now be delivered from restaurants or “catered” by certified kitchens in order to comply with the health department until the proper permits are in place. Occupy LA’s cook staff did have access to a kitchen for the first two weeks andthey are still looking for another. Pizza is still coming in and people are also relying on their own resources, providing food for themselves and those around them.
Move Your Money Movement Shifts to Forcing Local Divestiture from Big Banks |
| By: David Dayen Tuesday October 25, 2011 6:28 pm |
When ordinary citizens take their savings out of big banks, it has a small effect, but it would take lots and lots of take-up for that to really hurt those behemoth financial institutions which have such market share. By contrast, when a municipality, particularly a large municipality, moves their money out of a big bank, that can have an impact on behavior. This is particularly true if the municipal governments cite specific reasons, like a failure to modify mortgages for their constituents or a failure to maintain dilapidated, foreclosed properties, for moving the funds.

Republicans Combine Two of Their Obama-Endorsed Ideas Into “Even Obama Supported” GOP Bill |
| By: David Dayen Tuesday October 25, 2011 4:55 pm |
The House GOP’s next trick. Their plan is to find the two worst parts of the President’s jobs bill and deficit plan, and combine them for a package that sounds almost comically silly, but that gives them the talking point that the President supported the component parts
Administration Announces Student Loan Changes |
| By: David Dayen Tuesday October 25, 2011 4:09 pm |
There are two programs here. The first is income-based repayment. Under current law, graduates with student loans can opt to pay 15% of their income for 25 years instead of a monthly student loan repayment based on the cost of the loan. In the reconciliation sidecar to the Affordable Care Act, actually, this was reduced to 10% of income, starting in 2014. The plan announced under executive authority moves that date up to 2012, and changes the debt forgiveness end date to 20 years from 25. This would only benefit those who graduate college between 2012 and 2014; people who have already graduated or who are in repayment won’t benefit from this change. The Administration claims that 1.6 million graduates would be eligible for the new program.
