The few, the proud, the one-percent.
No wonder the remaining 99% are so popular.
By a 67 – 23 percent margin, New York City voters agree with the views of the Wall Street protesters and say 87 – 10 percent that it is “okay that they are protesting,” according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.
Agreeing with the protesters views are Democrats 81 – 11 percent and independent voters 58 – 30 percent, while Republicans disagree 58 – 35 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. Even Republicans, however, agree 73 – 23 percent with the protesters right to be there.
Sure, you’d think the 99 percent would be get a little higher support, but there’s a lot of conservatives self-loathing out there. In any case, it could be a lot worse, it is among the most popular political movements in the country, unlike the least popular, tea partiers
But child model Eric Cantor has the solution for what ills conservatives — more of the same.
The Virginia congressman, the most recent and prominent Republican whipping boy for Democrats, is heading to the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania to talk about income disparity and how Republicans believe the government could help fix it, an aide said. The speech will zero in on how Washington could help a “a single working mom…a small business owner…and how we make sure the people at the top stay there,” the aide said.

About Firedoglake
…getting up late to let my dog out and thankful for a light on at FDL…Cantor, a republican, giving a speech on income disparity now is a decade late and trillions of dollars short…but nice of him to react to OWS.
Occupy Chicago was kind enoough to develop a proposal for a laundry list. Of course the Chicago Tribune “reporter” screwed the article up by presenting this as a done deal. But what do you expect from The Chicago Tribune?
The list was placed in a chest and presented to the RNC yesterday evening, with predictable results.
Nah, Eric Cantor wasn’t too happy.
Morning all,
My guess is it’s nice to be on top like eric, citizen legislator .
Isn’t the tax system “fixed” for those at the top with” fixed” voting machines already eric.
We had a courier come to our place of business yesterday who had a Herman Cain for President sticker on his car. I guess he thinks that the rich pay too much in taxes and he, himself doesn’t pay enough.
Good morning, pups. It’s Brooks, Bruni and Nocera today. In “The Great Restoration” Bobo natters on about how behind the noise of our activist protest movements hums a quiet engine of determined Americans trying to repair our economic values. Of course, he’s comparing today with the 1820s instead of the 1930s… Mr. Bruni has reverted to his former role as chief restaurant critic for the Times. In “Dinner and Derangement” he says at Romera New York, a new restaurant in Chelsea, blazers are optional, but straitjackets would be a fine idea. There’s obviously nothing else going on in the world, so it’s fine to babble about some pretentious dining establishment. According to the review in the Wall Street Journal: “Romera will serve only a 12-course, $245 tasting menu.” Which I guess moves Mr. Bruni out of the 99%… Mr. Nocera, in “We Can All Become Job Creators,” says Howard Schultz is back with Big Idea No. 2. With the help of Starbucks, we the people can do what government and the banks won’t: make loans to small businesses.
Here they are.
The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve got a variety of bagels with cream cheese. It may rain later today, but right now we’ve got some pretty amazing fog. I can barely see across the street. This makes driving in this town even more exciting than usual — you’d be surprised at how many folks don’t think they need to use headlights or fog lights. Maybe they think it runs down the battery or something… Have a great day.
Geithner has told us to “stay tuned” for prosecutions of the financial engineers who broke the law to get us into this ungodly mess. Here’s a link to his transmission channel.
And BTW, here’s the list:
Occupy Chicago’s list of demands:
1. Pass a bill to reinstate Glass-Steagall, a safeguard separating banks’ commercial lending and investment operations. “Its repeal in 1999 is considered the major cause of the global financial meltdown of 2008-09,” the group states.
2. Repeal Bush-era tax cuts.
3. Prosecute “the Wall Street criminals who clearly broke the law and helped cause the 2008 financial crisis.”
4. Overturn a 2010 Supreme Court decision that allows corporations “to contribute unlimited amounts of money to campaigns.”
5. Pass the Warren Buffett rule on fair taxation, close corporate tax loopholes, prohibit hiding funds offshore.
6. Give the Securities and Exchange Commission stricter regulatory power, strengthen the Consumer Protection Bureau and help victims of predatory lending whose home loans have been foreclosed.
7. Take steps to limit the influence of lobbyists and eliminate the practice of lobbyists writing legislation.
8. Eliminate (the) right of former government regulators to work for corporations or industries they once regulated.
9. Eliminate corporate personhood.
10. Insist that the Federal Elections Commission “ensure that political candidates are given equal time for free at reasonable intervals during campaign season.”
11. Pass the Fair Elections Now Act.
12. Forgive student debt.
The kids are alright.
Cain’s got bumper stickers? Closest I’ve seen to a GOP bumpersticker here in Ohio (leftovers from last election don’t count) was a DRAFT SARAH!!! bumpersticker.
Boxturtle (GOPEers seem desperate to find an alternative to Mitt)
Oh sure. I trust that Timmeh will clean things up. I do. really.
Boxturtle (Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast – Queen of Hearts)
It’s the first sticker I’ve seen except for, like you, leftovers from 2008. It’s not surprising though. He rides around all day listening to incredibly rich people like Limbaugh, Beck and Boortz extoll the virtues of “average, working Americans” like Herman Cain. Moran.
Good morning pups and thanks Attaturk and Marion.
The Quinnipiac must have been far too inconvient for some fucking hack op-ed writer touted by The Morning Joke this morning. He calls the OWS protesters prone to violence and not representative of the population at large. Nice.
It has been interesting to watch the first few minutes of Morning Joke the last few weeks. It is the OWS bqashing talking point of the day. Oh, and today, according to Joke himself, it is all Bill Clinton’s fault.
It is our beloved Texas don’t forget.
A simple solution, from a conversation I took part in on FB
“After being in corporate America for over 45 years, I believe the only way to stop the over compensation of upper level executives is to 1. establish a surcharge (tax) on compensation that exceeds 20 times to the average compensation in that corporation and (2) make that over compensation non-deductible as an expense for the corporation granting it.”
Cary’s idea shows this isn’t just kids on a street corner. We’re all disgusted. And last night’s interview topic on The Daily Show is just another reason why.
Did you see Jeffrey Sachs take apart Herman Cain on Morning Joke?
Saw his opening remarks is all. Also heard Joke say “you can’t say that.” In my trade we call that unfuckingbelievable.
I thought Sachs did a fine and truthfull job.
Agree. I emailed him and told him so.
Showing Barry how to REALLY appeal to independents.
Asshole.
I’ve seen three 2012 bumper stickers on cars in my neighborhood: two for Ron Paul (one with “2012″ pasted over “2008″) and one for Willard Romney. Oddly, the Romney supporters are hard-line Catholics.
Where I just heard a lengthy story on cuts to family planning services in the valley where people are not poor enough and need more kids /s So sad. The lege really showed those poor women. Oh, Good Morning, I guess.
You have to chug that whole bottle in one go! lazy rich people.
it was also a poor description, it doesn’t taste like “shit”, crystal tastes like feet
“72% of respondents understand the protesters views ‘well’ or ‘fairly well’” whereas 2% of pundits understand them.
the pundits are trying to decipher an issue, there isn’t “an” issue there are quite a few, all valid enough to stand on their own, it just took this many to galvanize a movement
LoL i’ve never had Crystal but i’ll remember that for future.
Obama has responded to #Occupy, he:
1. Sided with Republicans and got three “Free” trade agreements passed, and;
2. Invaded Uganda for national security interests.
Obama is doing everything the elite want – he will be president in 2013 after this theater we call an election.
