About Firedoglake
Hey, Suz…..is this dive night?
climbing dive tower holding a lit birthday sparkler in each hand
boing boing three-and-a-half somersaults, tuck position, no splash (‘natch)
hey peeps — how’s everyone doing tonight?
hey dearie — sure is :) how’s oxnard tonight?
Fabulous! Hope you’ve had a wonderful birthday.
Terrific day. I remember when Popyeye said he wanted to be involved but couldn’t and then ended up getting involved in Occupy. I was on my way to the post office today when I saw a bunch of folks in Plaza Park, Oxnard, with an Occupy Oxnard sign. I dropped off my mail, circled back, and joined the crowd. 50 to 60 people….old, young, black, white, hispanic. Really good.
Suze! Pups! i worked so late tonight that i am still up for LLN. a mixed blessing …
its been forking awesome dearie!
yay! i’m seeing more and more diaries by folks at occupy events that are not the big 5 cities…. our community is forking amazing!
ndfg! are ya set for your weekend now or do ya have to work tomorrow?
Happy Birthday & nice dive, ma’am.
…and… YOGI!
i wanna thank ya’ll for keeping the conversation going last night when my internet went down. musta been a pole down or something because i was down for almost an hour and a half….
thanks newton — how was your day?
i said i couldn’t work tomorrow because i have a hot date with the washer and dryer. fun day!
Hope your birthday was FABULOUS!
Pretty sleepy, actually. Spent yesterday in a bit of tech-frenzy, so today was spent fielding calls and holding hands.
How’s it up there?
Aloha, Suz and lln pups…! Just a quick Hippo Birdies greeting tonite…! I’m back at sea level and mighty groggy on this soggy day, today…! ;-)
There have been events in Ventura….but I didn’t think Oxnard could get organized. Surprised that it was MoveOn.org that did the organizing. I’m not too sure why I have reservations about MoveOn, but I have to say that I’m glad that they did the prep work. It was a good group…..and I loved hearing the passing cars on Oxnard Blvd (Pacific Coast Highway) honking their agreement. Nice to be part of it.
i’m gonna remember that one :) its been great. got new boots from mom (and 5 pair of warm socks) and a friend sent me a box of gourmet chocolates from barlovento chocolates. spoke with my family throughout the day and was overwhelmed by the number of folks on facebook wishing hippo birdies.
truly an amazing day
no rain! second day this month with no rain — the first being yesterday :)
aloha tut — thanks dood. how’s paradise tonight?
A trend! A trend!
Fun, fun!
hate to piss on the parade, but by my clock, yesterday is over and it’s tomorrow. Suze
just bein’ a wise guy. what’s up, peoples. happy continuing b’day, suze!!
The Robert says hi Late Late Nighters while at the same time I am tuned into the revolution streaming live from Chicago….
hey bfl — its my forking thread and so the forking clock on the wall is my forking clock so it’s still my forking birthday dood *laughing* how ya been? how’s the city beautiful tonight?
Not on the West Coast…. party on!
hey robert — how was your day?
Hey Suz, just want to say that I was thinking of you today. Am in Durango tonight, they have Occupy Durango here. It is a nice weekend, hope you had a super b-day
get the party started
oh. never mind.
hey bg – thanks! are you having fun in durango?
Keeping up through FDL and live streams on the global OWS mostly. So far crowd control in NYC & Chicago are being civil….
*laughing* its my party and i’ll fork if i want to
Today I joined Occupy Merced (town in Central California). About 150 people there, lots of energy and we’re meeting again next Saturday. We all had signs with different messages made by students from UC Merced. We got so many honking horns, waves, and thumbs up. I’m so excited to be part of this movement.
At Oxnard today was a rabbi who says he marched with Martin Luther King, Jr., in the sixties. And then I learned that my best friend marched, as a child, with Cesar Chavez. What a day! My own kids had to do without grapes for several years when we lived in Chicago because their mother was standing with the grape pickers!
Beautiful here in CO. Yes, nice time. Just kicking back, weekend off from LM.
Can’t hang tonight, but thinking of you and wishing you the best of the rest of your day.
Occupy Everywhere!
NYC: Zucutti Park is reportedly surrounded…..
hey karenb — wow, that’s awesome! what did your sign say?
sweet! thanks bg — occupy everywhere!
fork
Amazing experience, isn’t it. I’m innately shy and was kind of anxious about walking up to the group and then walking the main street…..but I so admired the people I met. I will definitely go back for the next gathering.
so glad you spent the day surrounded by love! and boots and warm socks are such a nice gift for this time of year!
An old neighbor of mine … it was a while ago, and she was in her late 80′s at the time … told me with enthusiasm that “the older you get, the longer you should celebrate your birthday. At my age, i celebrate it for the WHOLE MONTH!”
doll
i’m shy in social situations yet not shy at all online or back when i was working the streets – but on duty only. i’m usually the wallflower or quiet little mouse at parties or events. what was it that made it easy for you?
My town is about 67-70% Hispanic. We need to draw them into this effort. We were graced, I would say, to have a member of our City Council walk with us as well as a member of the School Board. The police were terrific…. while they didn’t block the streets for us, they were a cooperative presence and made sure we were safe. We reminded them that we were trying to protect their pensions too!
this year, i got introduced to the birthday week on facebook. jen’s has done birthday weeks for years but i’ve never thought to do it myself. this year, it got forced upon me.
i’m gonna do it again next year and i like your old neighbor’s expansion with age theory.
party hard
What made it easy for me?….I’m going to be truthful….and I hope someone will let popyeye know this….the folks at FDL who have stepped up have given me the courage to step out of my comfort zone. Heck, I’m able to give speeches and such….but doing social is kind of hard for me. The cause matters, and that other FDLers who were equally anxious could do it gave me courage. Yea, Us!
wow. i can totally see that tho dearie. the fdl community is awesome. i overcame my shyness enough to host a couple meetups and go to a couple more because of the peeps here.
Suz~ I hope you had a great birthday! Had to stop in for a moment just to say “howdy”.
I remember when you moved, Suz, from the cabin in the Santa Cruz Mountains… and I really wanted to drive up and help you load the POD….but I was too shy. Then I saw the picture of you and TeddySanFran, Newt, Nahant and the others and I went, “Wow, those are my people!” I should have had the courage to join in. I’m getting there! (I think I was commenting under another moniker then…crashing computers every few years and having to beg Jane to let me back on cause I never could remember my log in!)
Today was Occupy the City Beautiful. I went for awhile this morning,, the march downtown and back to the park outside the Chamber of Commerce. Big crowd. For lazy Orlando anyway. Sentinel said “several hundred” at the march. An occupier said about 2 thousand. Another said about a thousand. The Sentinel is always on the low side. 2 thousand is probably on the high side. A thousand is about right. I think. That’s excellent for Orlando. Very good. I worked 2 saturdays ago and there were about 10, 15 people outside Bank of America building which is across the street from me. So going from 15 people to about 1,000 in 2 weeks is not bad. Everybody was very pleasantly surprised. The actual occupation tonight has been small. Last I heard it was 150 people sleeping there which is still good for Orlando. Park closed at 11. All i heard was there were “contingency plans” if the cops wouldn’t let them stay and they’re not. During the march the cops were excellent. Great weather. Great energy. Missed Alan Grayson though. I’m encouraged. So is almost everybody. One reason most people left after the march was that there were alot of older people there. That’s not a bad thing at all. Wonder what the Chamber of Commerce will think when they come in Monday and there are people sleeping in their park.
!!!???
shadow! thanks — how ya been?
i remember those days too! there’s a lot of courage that i have drawn on from the wonderful folks at fdl — you guys helped me immensely during the 18 months it took for the cabin to sell…..
and i remember those change your name times too…. no matter the moniker, its good to see your fonts
Good. I did too as a kid.
yay #occupy orlando! didja take pictures? did you have a sign and if so, what did it say?
nypd has #ows park surrounded by cops per the twitter machine
This IS the comfort zone, man.
Pretty good….following the OWS pretty closely. Can’t do more than offer spiritual support, but those brave folks deserve all kudos. Occasionally I’ve wondered just how bad “Occupy the Ozarks” would bomb: I’d probably be shot for being a dirty hippie.
marched with MLK, Jr., marched with Cesar Chavez, or went without grapes?
Any answer is good with me!
they are brave indeed. i am so ashamed of my nypd brethren’s response to ows… and heartened by departments like cleveland.
i bet there are more of ya than ya think in the ozarks.
now this is funny. i took pictures with my crappy little cell phone and most of them have my finger in front. i’m an idiot. i didn’t have a sign.
party until the cows come home
I believe that I earned my “dirty fucking hippie” cred today…..I was a Republican back in the day. I was also a Catholic. I was also trying so hard to please my parents. My dad is still around at 93, but I’ve found other ways to earn his respect. He knows I’m a hippie-type these days. You gotta laugh. My neo-con twin brother is still stuck….too bad for him.
LOL. grapes. i don’t even remember but you were allowed to buy the ones with an eagle stamped on them or something? what was it? i was pretty young.
It’s being reported that they’re running critically short on food there….
My sign: I CAN’T AFFORD A LOBBYIST. I’m going to make a huge banner for next Saturday. WE GOT SOLD OUT, THE BANKS GOT BAILED OUT. Not orginal but everyone can relate to that.
I have been following Occupy Wall St. from day one thanks to FDL. I told many people today about FDL and encouraged them to check us out.
i’m a recovering former republican too…
dood that sounds exactly what i would dood trying to take a pic with a cell phone *laughing* there’s a reason i have a camera
what was the best sign you saw there?
Don’t be overly ashamed of your fraternal brothers…at this stage in the game, they have to do their masters’ bidding. The time will come when many of them will make decisions about where they truly stand.
I don’t remember any pass for grapes….my kids got pears and bananas and apples….and some education about the value of workers and how we would stand with those who did the hard work. They turned out to be great kids!
those are great signs karenb! wow – how big of a banner?
we know where the forking white shirts stand *spitting* never trust the brass was a common expression way down in the ranks where i was
My best friend here in Oxnard is a Mexican immigrant whose father and mother were on strike for months against a lemon company. The union helped them with food. She would never cross a picket line….and neither would I!
Police are moving in on OWSChicago it is being reported….
I saw lots of “We are the 99%” today….but I think the second line should be, “And So Are YOU!” I don’t know any 1% folks….and I doubt that many of us do know any.
Police moving on on OWSMinnesota, taking down tents and arresting anyone interfering….
Hippo Birdies to you, Hippo Birdies to you…..
And whatever, I can’t remember the rest.
Just happened upon this, I deleted my Facebook page because I got tired of being fucked with.
No need to reply sweetie, ya know I love ya and I am going to go thud yet again.
G’thud and huggies.
Hope ya had a good one.
Exactly. And the longer this goes on, the more stress it will place within the department. The working cops don’t overly mind abusing Bad People, but will reach the breaking point being told to abuse kids and good folks with an honest grievance.
Tony Baloney, on the other hand, deserves a good whack in the nutz. :-)
I shoulda sent ya an email Sistah Suz, but happy hatchling and hippo birdie two ewes to ya, my fav LLN Queen.
Smiles galore from us to ya . . . the dog, cat and them daughters n grandkids.
N many more . . . *bows*
How about: “If you aren’t in the 1%….why are you paying their taxes?”
You’re right. We had more hispanics than I anticipated but I’d like to see more. very few blacks. would like to see that change.
And while it is overly aggressive and might get me a reprimand, my favorite is: “You take my house, I take your kid.”
my dad, if he was nothing else, was a UNION MAN. Left an impression on me.
sounds like a coordinated national response
We had a bunch of black men (no women, don’t know why) at the Oxnard event today….and some of them had real expertise in standing up. I was thrilled to walk with them. I’m hopeful that we can draw in the Hispanics. They suffer plenty under the current system.
well, i guess it’s out of bounds for the movement but i did laugh at “Nuke The Hamptons”.
*smooches* and g’thud babe… give the mrs a pinch for me too – thanks busted
was just going to say that. but i type REALLY slow. and bad.
my first thought when i saw the tony baloney was that he was pissed that he was out there on the street instead of sitting at his cushy desk job
hey larue — thanks dood — how’s sac tonight?
hahahahaha i like snarky signs dood
my forking firefox crashed so i had to do a reboot.. is why i poofed for a wee bit…and was slow responding
Oh, yeah, definitely coordinated. But, hey, there are more of us than them. We just have to keep showing up!
orlando moved from the original park to someplace else. they said it was downtown but i don’t know it—- anyway, no cops. yet. we’ll see.
Cultivate the cops! They are going to retire eventually….and their retirement is at much at risk as ours! Education, education, education!
i love this tweet i just saw:
Suzanne, the magical 100 is coming up…..just sayin’ :)
Amen to that!
The Minnestoa Occupiers are chanting to the cops that they are fighting for the cops’ pensions, too….
congrats on snagging the happy lucky 100 dearie!!! (and thanks for the warning too)
My Happy Birthday gift to you!
the cleveland cops seemed to get understand that too
That’s a message that needs to go out to all Occupy groups….if you aren’t in the 1%, you need to wise up!
(((dearie)))
they were very nice during the day. funny thing hapened. cop in an unmarked car hadn’t put his lights on but was beeping his hown. people are cheering and waving back thanking the driver for his support. he wanted us to get the hell out of the way. he put the lights on and we did. had to laugh.
Now that’s funny! Wonder what he thought….a bit of cognitive dissonance, I hope.
i am a 99%er — and so are you
As I watched the young police persons at the Oxnard march today, I wondered how any of them could be cruel to the nice old folks and decent young and middle aged folks who had come to stand up for America. When I see the NYPD ‘white shirts’ swinging their batons and spraying their pepper, I just have to wonder what their mothers must think?
Yep. Love them Cleveland cops. Minneapolis cops have now removed all the occupiers’ tents, but no arrests.
Maybe some tent manufacturer will donate replacements to those brave folks….
i liked the fact it was individuals on the force providing the tents in cleveland. no way in hell these guys are gonna trash the tents they provided.
where’s spocko? This would be a great marketing idea. I’m pretty damned sure that the 1%ers don’t go camping!
here’s spocko’s site — you can leave that suggestion there if he doesn’t show up here
The NYC police–even the white shirts–kept it civil today, but did move occupiers of one park to Zucutti Park.
To be honest, those Minneapolis cops looked like they really didn’t want to follow their orders. They did let stand one large canapy….
The more I read and think, the more I believe that we need to highlight that the ‘people’ are NOT the 1%……the 1% need to be cordoned off and pointed out and shunned. We really, really must keep the pressure on … to take our country back….and not in that silly TeaParty way….but for real, for the people. Just makes sense to me.
i’m gonna bail early tonight peeps. was up early (before the crack of noon) so that i could be sufficiently caffeinated enough to make my member association calls today and then there was all the wonderful personal calls i had today — its been a full day and its caught up with me.
thank you so very much for being a part of my 57th birthday celebration and making it fun and special. i can only offer a very humble and heartfelt thank you.
looking forward to seeing what tut has in store for us sun and mon nites. hope to see ya there
g’nite all
Tell me if it wasn’t just pure meanness, though to take these folks’ tents, but let the folks stay in the park in the drizzle….
Happy dreams, Suz. And thanks, as always, for a lively salon. You do good!
Feed is reporting mass arrests in Chicago….
nite suz. thanks for everything
Rahm doing his Rahmness? Fuckin’ retard!
I return after months away, and sign on in to find I am too late to wish you a happy birthday Suz. Well, fine then. I’m the first to wish you a happy 58th next year!
Feed is now reporting a sniper in Phoenix. Jeebus, I hope that’s not true….
yeah. the Cleveland approach was amazing. hopefully it’ll keep up. respect going both ways and things will get worked out.
don’t know exactly what’s happening in orlando. think the cops told them they had to get out of the park until 6 a.m. and told them they could move across the street by the lake if they wanted. doesn’t seem at all unreasonable to me and it’s peaceful. people moved where the cops said they could go and the cops left.
god
what is the link to the live stream?
