Late Night FDL: Kids Today Like Their Print |

I can’t tell you how many college journalism events I go to, where they discuss “the future of journalism.” The only time student media even comes up is for someone to deplore it as unserious and students’ love of it as insignificant. It only counts as reading a paper if you read the Times, kids!
NYC Law Enforcement Moving Aggressive Park Dwellers into Occupy Wall Street Site |
| By: David Dayen Monday October 31, 2011 7:15 pm |
If this is true, it represents one of the more cynical actions I’ve seen from law enforcement, whose job it it to serve and protect, in a long, long time. According to Harry Siegel, cops in New York City are re-routing aggressive, drunken individuals picked up in parks across the city down to the protest site, taking advantage of the open-source nature of the protests.
Shocker: The More You Pay a Rating Agency, the More They Do Your Bidding! |
| By: David Dayen Monday October 31, 2011 6:30 pm |
Sit down for this one. Because you’re just not going to believe it. It seems that the more credit rating agencies are paid by corporations and banks to rate their debt, the more favorable ratings they hand out! This goes against everything I know about the untainted, incorruptible hand of the free market, and comes very close to shaking my faith in the credibility of the rating agencies.
FDL Movie Night: “The Man Nobody Knew” |
| By: Lisa Derrick Monday October 31, 2011 5:00 pm |
“Your father is a murderer”
Was he? Or did William Colby act for what he saw as the highest good for America and the the world? Are the two mutually exclusive? Can we ever really know our families? These questions and more are at the center of The Man Nobody Knew, a portrait of William Colby, by his son and Emmy-award winning director, Carl Colby, our guest tonight.
OWS – The Legal Working Group |
| By: Cynthia Kouril Monday October 31, 2011 4:15 pm |
Being the law geek around the Lake, I went to introduce myself to the Legal Working Group and was given an interview by one of its members, Janos Marton. Mr. Marton works at a law firm by day and spends his off hours helping OWS. The firm members who know about his activity have been supportive.
Who’s Undercover at Your Occupy Protest? In Oakland It’s These Guys. |
| By: spocko Monday October 31, 2011 3:30 pm |
The police will object to this kind of video for many reasons including the fear that an undercover cop might be in danger if he is in another undercover operation. That’s really not our problem. The police made a decision to use an undercover cop in this way and they got caught. The MSM might agree with the police and refuse to run a story which would amplify the undercover cop’s identity, but now the protesters know and some of the public following along at home will find out, giving them more sympathy for the protesters and more suspicion of the police’s claims.
Obama Executive Order Seeks Crackdown on Drug Shortages |
| By: David Dayen Monday October 31, 2011 2:45 pm |
The Obama Administration continued its “we can’t wait” initiative by ordering earlier notification of potential shortages and/or price gouging for medical drugs. But shortages and exorbitant prices are the natural outcomes of allowing drug monopolies and extended patent protection.
Occupy London and Resignation of the Dean of St. Paul’s Cathedral |
| By: Peterr Monday October 31, 2011 2:15 pm |
A third official from St. Paul’s Cathedral in London has resign, but unlike others, the latest to resign appears to be opposed to accommodating the Occupy London protesters. It’s a lost opportunity for senior church officials to stand for justice.
New Bottom Line Announces National Bank Divestment Campaign |
| By: David Dayen Monday October 31, 2011 1:45 pm |
The New Bottom Line, which has been focused on anti-bank actions around foreclosures and Wall Street greed, has launched a “Move Our Money” campaign, which encourages local governments to divest their funds from big banks. In over 50 cities across the country, coalition members will press for legislation to move local government funds. November 5 is move your money day.
