Democrats Panic, Dump Hundreds of Thousands into NY-09 Race

By: David Dayen Thursday September 8, 2011 2:25 pm

Incredibly, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is launching a half-million dollar ad buy into New York City with one weekend to go until a special House election in NY-09, the seat once held by Anthony Weiner. That half a million dollars would have come in very handy next year, when Democrats make a push to take back the House, no? Instead, it’s being chewed up in the expensive New York City media market to protect a bad candidate whose district will probably get chopped up in redistricting anyway.

How Did the Secret Service and Dept. of Interior Know About the White House 13 Protest Before it Happened?

By: Jane Hamsher Thursday September 8, 2011 12:30 pm

How did the Secret Service and Department of Interior know about the protest ahead of time? Dan and the other members of the White House 13 did not disclose publicly that they would be taking part in this action.

Dan and his lawyers tried to compel the government to produce the Secret Service’s emails and other documents that would indicate the government was singling out Choi for punishment, but AUSA George maintained that it was not relevant to the case of whether or not Dan broke the law by chaining himself to the White House fence. Judge Facciola ruled in Dan’s favor and demanded the government turn over the documents, prompting George to seek a delay while she prepares a writ of mandamus. Dan will return to court in a few weeks after a decision has been made on the writ.

Why Mitt Romney Needs to Hammer the Electability Argument

By: Jon Walker Thursday September 8, 2011 12:11 pm

Romney doesn’t really inspire the GOP base, but the GOP base is enthusiastic about wanting Obama gone. Romney’s biggest potential advantage in the primary are the national polls which show that if the 2012 election is close, he would be the GOP’s best (and possibly only) hope of beating Obama. But this is only a political advantage for Romney if he can make the primary voters believe it, and so far they don’t. That is why Romney’s campaign is going to need to hammer in the electability message every chance they get.

GOP Debate Audience Apparently Really Loves Killing People

By: Blue Texan Thursday September 8, 2011 10:30 am

For my money, this was the most bizarre moment during the GOP presidential debate. Even if you are in favor of the death penalty, enthusiastically cheering the deaths of 234 Americans is just bizarre.

Chicago Fed President Charles Evans: Mass Unemployment is a Huge Failure of Fed Policymakers

By: David Dayen Thursday September 8, 2011 9:45 am

Now that we’ve determined that the economy is destined for a decade or more of depressed growth with no hope, it’s perhaps a small comfort that one important policymaker actually views this as a huge problem which he could play a role in solving. Charles Evans of the Chicago Federal Reserve released a paper yesterday spelling out why high unemployment is a huge failure of Fed policymakers.
