Well one thing we learned this weekend is that Freedom of Speech and assembly is available for crazy racists in tri-corner hats, but not those who deign to criticize the multi-millionaires of Wall Street.
You criticize the bull you get the horns.
We have learned the media will not pay attention to those protesting large scale thieves even in large numbers until they are forcibly removed for having the temerity to engage in said fictional rights. But if you are a crank who doesn’t think the 16th Amendment exists you and your two friends will get a Cable Network to do your bidding.
These Wall Street Protesters were arrested by cops because they are mad about being fleeced by the rich…worse than people usually are.
But if they were protesting that cops should be stripped of their pensions, salaries, and collective bargaining rights — they’d be able to sit there and waive their fake Kenyan Birth Certificates as much as they’d like.

About Firedoglake
If we could just sabotage forty or fifty million cable tv hookups, we’d have this thing cinched.
Rights? Those three jobs it takes to make you real Merkin, that’s the important thing.
Media coverage of this, or lack of, is appalling. If there is a bail and/or fine fundraising movement, I’d like to know. I can send something. Good on these wonderful protesters.
“The policeman isn’t there to create disorder; the policeman is there to preserve disorder.”
It takes guts for New York’s Finest to mace unarmed women in a holding pen.
Very ugly.
Well now we know what state tv looks like. We don’t have to look to Yemen or Syria for a demonstration of how the state controls the news and information. We have it right here. Even the police brutality is an orchestrated state measure so that when the protests are shown its not of a peaceful assembly it will be of young people getting arrested and pushing back against force and red pepper spray. Even if the arrests are illegitimate all middle America will see are people getting arrested. Let’s hope that there are plenty of reinforcements and that those that are on the front line for the rest of us will be safe.
I don’t know about that but we could call for a boycott of MSNBC (Sharpton, Maddow, Hayes, O’Donnell, Schultz, ) until and unless they park their captains’ chairs down there to cover this. Or are they (Maddow et al )just going to show the big O telling everyone to put on their marching shoes ignoring the fact that O forgot to buy new shoes and skipped marching in Wisconsin, Ohio and Tacoma Washington and now New York.
All those thugs in blue won’t protect Wall Street from the tsunami that’s crossing the Atlantic.
First they ignore you, then they ricicule you, they they fight you, then you win – Gandhi
Boxturtle (Twitter is the “new” news. What would Walter Cronkite say?)
Good morning all,
Those that employ the thugs have the most to worry about when the shit comes out of the fan because the shit has hit the fan already. We may not go French on the the rich but these goons have no compunction against using violence when they lose their vaunted positions.
In the information age why is it impossible to ID the thugs by a readily readable badge number as they Pepper spray young caged defenseless woman ?
Maybe the donning of some tri-corner hats would have been helpful.
If at first, the MainStreamMedia thought it was a Tea Party, and that the Tea Party wanted more Tax Relief For Wall Street AND Union Busting…
A few could be interviewed, saying, we don’t believe that Wall Street got enough TARP money. Unions are preventing the growth of the economy and more outsourcing creates jobs and reduces prices. And Viva La Kochs.
It’s not just the msm. The only media I know of that covered this regularly was FDL. Kos, TPM and TP barely touched it. Current did a couple of spots on KO about it and MSNBC.com mentioned there were some arrests but other than that I wouldn’t know it had happened without FDL.
“In the information age why is it impossible to ID the thugs by a readily readable badge number as they Pepper spray young caged defenseless woman ?”
It’s not impossible at all, there’s just no desire to do so. Even if we had a badge number, do you think a judge elected with Wall St. money will care?
Boxturtle (You have the right to remain silent and they suggest you use it)
Margaret@12: KOS won’t cover it much because it reflects poorly on Obama. And upon Obama’s bailout.
Boxturtle (Eventually, KOS won’t be able to post anything because it will ALL reflect poorly on Obama)
Why just MSNBC. Why not CNN and the network news, too?
It’s not ust MSNBC doing the blackout.
This made it into the daily news yesterday. Hopefully the NYTimes will get off it’s ass
Some of the videographers have been making a point of capturing the faces and badge numbers of officers who particuarly egregious things.
Since you see the officer doing the act , and then the videographer follows them until the badge # is captured on tape, it ought to be admissable in court.
Assuming there is a court case. Have any of the arrestees filed a civil rights complaint yet?
There is an expectation that MSNBC is a “liberal” outlet. CNN in my opinion has talking heads or just plain status quo enforcers (Candy Crowley, Wolf Blitzer) But the MSNBC evening line up pretends to support grass roots efforts such as when Schultz parked his butt in Wisconsin. That’s why (and the GE history, ) I said MSNBC.
Cynthia@16: I’m sure it’s admissable. But the prosecutor works for the city, which works for Wall St. So no criminal charges are likely to be filed. In terms of a civil suit, in a couple of years when it finally gets to a judge (if it does), NYC will settle for a trivial fine and no admission of wrongdoing.
Boxturtle (Rentacops would be more vulnerable, but I haven’t seen many of them on public property)
We can tell bloomburg STFU when he claims the city has no money after staging that show of force.
You’re right, and the truth of that really requires that we sit quietly for a while and contemplate the incredible seriousness of having had such a conclusive demonstration of mass media unity and selectivity. To me, the implications are potentially terrifying. Infuriating, but also terrifying.
Good morning.
Did the cops break up the whole demonstration, or is it still going on?
Well you must have missed 60 minutes propaganda piece for Ray Kelly et al last night. Apparently the NYPD has officers across the world, including the Dominican Republic looking for terrorists. In addition, the NYPD apparently at a drop of the hat will stage shows of force, throwing out an extra swarm of tens of patrol cars, (I might have heard a 100?) at a time, for no reason other than to show that they are there. They have a lot of money to flush down the toilet. Must have come from firing their police advisors.
USG is working local police hard as its way around posse comitatus. Part of the overall scheme to impose martial law on the next terriss attack.
Something tells me they ain’t going to wait for the next ‘terrist’ attack. Never saw that orange netting deployed that way before. We have met the terrist according to the powers that be and its us.
You have no rights. There are no such things. So-called rights are only statements of principle that have no bearing on reality unless they are enforced by the power of the people exercising them.
You have as much right to protest as the protesters in Syria. Be glad that you weren’t shot dead. That will be the next step if you actually threaten the power structure.
“Violence appears where power is in jeopardy, but left to its own course it ends in power’s disappearance.” Hannah Arendt
I stopped watching Maddow when she sided with the Obama administration over WikiLeaks. I stopped watching MSNBC altogether when they fired Olbermann.
Maddow has become very corporate, she is the only one I watch on MSNBC, and I am about to quit watching her. Here lately, I just watch her to see what she covers….
This is why we exist.
This is why I call the establishment media “the GOP/Media Complex”.
The conservative/Republican takeover of the press, and its ongoing efforts to take over other arbiters of objective reality such as schools, colleges, and research institutes, has been in motion since former Nixon Cabinet member William Simon’s famous call to arms, A Time for Truth, published in the wake of Watergate:

http://www.consortiumnews.com/2009/081809.html
Look at @chrislhayes to see what the MSNBC anchors think. They think they have better things to cover. They use the same excuse that they need to have a single sentence to sum up the protest or it’s impossible to cover. Of course this absurd demand is never made of the right. Who knows what single message sums up the Tea Party (according to them)? They don’t have one. Some are Ron Paul-ites, some are the George W Bush/Cheney die-hards.
Anyway, Chris Hayes claimed it was covered by MSNBC 3 times but offered no time of when. Did he mean the 3 times it was dropped in off the teleprompter chat between anchors during the week? Because Saturday, when all the police violence occurred, when he was out hanging with his friends in NYC, the better things that MSNBC was covering was a bunch of docu-dramas: Vega Homicide, Vegas Undercover, Locked Up: Indiana, Documystery: The Haunting. Same for Sunday.
We saw them at the Rethug Convention, and a court subsequently ruled they could not use them in conjunction with barricade backups.
Which is why for a long time I’ve been saying the real locus where we ought to take action is the studios of the media. If we want attention we ought to shut down NBC studios in D.C. just before Meet the Press is supposed to happen. If we want attention we ought to shut down FOX News studios in NYC.
Common Dreams covered it too.
Please, don’t waste your time with that lame ass shit. Boycotts are a joke. It will take more and more protests, and something getting ugly for there to be any coverage. Evetually, we will need a Red Army Faction/Baader-Meihoff type gang to go after the Fascist’s and their toadys if real notice is to be taken.
