I see the President has dusted off his “the beatings will continue until morale improves” pitch.
President Barack Obama launched into a fiery speech Saturday night at the Congressional Black Caucus awards dinner, where he told black leaders to “stop complaining” and fight for jobs and opportunity. “Shake it off,” Obama said. “Stop grumbling. Stop crying. We are going to press on. We have work to do.”
I liked it better when it was “Stop whining,” ”Wake up,” “Get over it,” and “Get in gear.” Easy to see why they’ve brought this back — it worked so well for them in 2010.
Now I could be wrong, but I don’t think all those small donors the President has lost are going to find all this scolding particularly inspiring.
“I have been very disappointed in the president,” Ms. Kurland said. “He has not stood up to the Republicans.”

Is he even speaking to the base. “Stop complaining” is the kind of right-wing spin always directed at African Americans. Classic blame the victim. He’s not speaking to the CBC at all. He speaking FOR those who despise it. I mean just WHO does he want to HEAR him telling African Americans to stop crying? He might as well be Rush Limbaugh.
I respond to all the e-mails asking for money. I tend to focus on the refusal to prosecute banksters, but I try to vary that with other fails, like tax cuts for the rich, and wars on whoever we are drone-bombing.
Funny, it’s all been into the black hole so far.

Unemployment in the African-American community is much, much higher than the national average, something around 16 percent, maybe higher.

But, but — Obama is the President! His words carry weight!
It will cut consumer spending and slow the economy since the people who have jobs will put more money into savings to retire now that SS will be cut. In a sense Obama’s plan will hurt consumer spending right now months before his jobs plan does anything to help the economy. The big question is will Obama’s small jobs plan counter act the millions of Americans who will start saving money now and not spend it in the economy?
To fix the economy we need people to buy more stuff then employers will hire more workers to make more stuff for them to buy.
I don’t have numbers but my educated guess is Obama’s job plan is not enough to counter act greater savings foe retirement by Americans facing SS cuts.
This is a guy who publicly lectured Black fathers–for national consumption– about being at home for their kids when studies show they do a better job than White dads; who told South Carolina Dems that the kind of change he’d like to see was Black people ceasing to litter in their own neighborhoods; and who lectured African leaders about corruption while presiding over giveaways to corrupt banksters who make African corruption look like canasta. He has gone out of his way to do nothing for Black people and the poor–he doesn’t believe in it. His community organizing experience turns out to have involved a get-out-the-vote drive. He identifies with Malcolm for his macho, but not WEB Dubois. None of us should sit in judgment about one another’s race, but there is nothing in his past or experience that inspires confidence that he really understands or truly identifies with Black people. We do, however, have evidence that he uses them for political gain. Screw him.

I am really angry at him. I am really angry at myself for not paying attention to his record. I am rally angry at myself for indulging in reverse racism, that is, thinking because he is black he must be for people.
I don’t think it is fair to now indulge in parlor psychiatry. At the risk of sounding like more reverse racism I don’t think most of us white folks know enough about what it is like to be born black and climb all the walls in order to succeed in the white world. I would guess you have to steel yourself against all sorts criticism fair and unfair. I would guess it takes a whole lot of mental energy just to stay centered in a racist world.
Having said that I am still angry at him. Seems to me he had a chance in the beginning to do great things for the country yet he didn’t seem to try.
I think what angers me most is that he must have understood the hopes and dreams that were riding on his shoulders.
Even if he was a neoliberal in his heart the whole of the campaign, how could one have a soul and not have been moved to do one’s best to accomplish great things for those most at risk in this country?

The WH has obviously been listening to Warren. The recent Obama speech under the bridge in Ohio is a complete rip-off of a talk Warren gave to a small group in MA.
That’s where his totally phantasmagorical statement that he’s a “warrior for the middle class” statement comes from. He must have taken an elbow while going to the basket. Actually, I don’t think he has the courage to take it to the basket. I’m pretty sure he’s an outside shooter, unless the opposition works for him. I heard his lip injury last year was a result of eating pretzels.
Lest we forget, OmAli, Barack Obama can and does do some things … he continues the wars, begins new ones, he builds new drone bases and uses drones to kill on a regular basis … he could, by himself, with no help nor hindrance from Congress, end the tar-sands pipeline, he could speak out against capital punishment, he couod use his bully pulpit to address a multitude of problems, dire, deadly and serious problems … but he does not … and yet, he is condsidered to be “a good person” even though 45% of those eligible to vote say they will not vote for him … still, 33% say that they will vote for him … thus he needs 18% more to win but only 6% more to lose … how many here will vote for Obama? How many will not? How long will it be until we are exhorted, ever here, at FDL, to hold our noses and vote for the lesser evil?

The day I saw him on that tv show ‘the view’ Joy Behar, Whoopie and others, was when he lost me. He talked down to them. There was no reason to, they were respectful. He explained things as if they were ignorant. I wondered then if he talked down to people generally or if he had a ‘woman problem’ Now I notice the whitehouse is mostly a boys club.
Perhaps it’s finally dawned on him that PEOPLE vote; corporations can’t.
All the corporate donations in the world are no good if they don’t translate to votes at the polls.
[Of course all that corporate cash can go far in "buying" votes, getting "friendly" voting machines, hiring people to get out the vote. But people still have to VOTE. Until they can stand next to people at the ballot box and make sure they check the right square, they can't be sure what they're getting for their money.]
I was being a bit hyperbolic. We both know we can’t diagnose mental illness from the tv. But he doesn’t have the language or the disorganization of thought one usually sees in schizophrenia. In saying he got his information from TV I was thinking of the movie Being There with Alec Guiness as a metaphor. Obama seems to have little thought of his own other than a nasty aggressive streak. My own take is he decides what to say and how he presents ideas not from within but from how he believes it will be received. I don’t think he deceives because to deceive you have to know the truth. I am not certain he has that thing we call feeling it in the gut that validates premises and ideas…… But of course that is just my thinking and not of as much value in judging him. That must be on the basis of what he does, not what he says.

I asked to be removed from the mailing list. I said that when I see that Obama, the Senators and the Congress people in the House who belong to the “Democratic” party have renounced being Republicans and voted democratic values then I’ll request to be added to the mailing list.

Even more unfortunate is that Obama is the symptom of a larger disease. He’s typical of the sad-sack Democrats on Capitol Hill. Even if you remove Obama from the chessboard, you still have the problem of a rotting, decrepit party that has outlived its usefulness yet will be harder than skunk smell to get rid of.
The contempt the President holds for us, is nearly that of the Republicans for their base, but they hide it better.

And whenever (2000) the Democratic base has believed that there’s no difference between the Democrat and the Republican, the Republican gets in office and proves them so, so wrong.
I think Obama is the kind of guy that thinks rich and powerful people are better than everyone else by merit of their being rich and powerful. He so wants to feel acceptance by that club. He thinks everyone else should think this way too.
Democrats have held their noses in the voting booth so many times, we’re getting brain damaged. I’m not doing it this time. Third party or write in and to hell what happens. Voting them out is the ONLY thing they understand.

I went out 4 years ago as many of you did, hoping , praying, it would be different”this time”… 4 years later, we all can see the “Emperor indeed, has no Clothes”. And as many have said here before as long as we keep this cycle of political parties 1 and 1A, the Wars, Wall Street greed, FISA, and all the rest of the nonsense will continue……

If George Bush killed, once and for all, the idea of White Supremacy, Mr. Obama–in his turn–should make clear that skin color alone, of whatever kind, is no proof of altruism or virtue. It is the biggest political tragedy of my lifetime that Obama has to offer the ultimate proof.
And for all the warrior for the middle class b.s., try, just try getting your Democrats to make an unconditional commitment to Medicare and Social Security. Oh, they support the troops, i.e., the WARs. They can’t tell you too often how they support squandering trillions abroad. But just try getting a commitment out of them on domestic programs.

Mr. Obama’s complaint about his lack of support from Main Street Americans would be more credible if he were not fighting so hard to oppose what he’s telling his “supporters” to stop complaining and go out and achieve.
Mr. Obama can’t hold a candle to FDR. He is not saying, “I agree with you, now help me out by making me do it.” He doesn’t agree with his base. He just wants their votes and imagines he’ll get them by continuing to make empty election promises and to browbeat those who might support him.
Like Bush, and unlike Lincoln, Obama has surrounded himself with mynah birds, although it’s an open question which of them is the mimic. He has no one offering a range of options or opposing options and doesn’t want them. He’s a Chicago pol who wants what he wants because he wants it. And what he wants offers little to the lives, jobs, educations and needs of Main Street Americans.
I won’t vote for him again. Let the heavens fall. Pull the pillars from the temple. Obama killed the last thing that crawled from Pandora’s Box.

Even if Obama loses in 2012, the loss won’t even faze him. He’ll look somber and dour on election night when he concedes. Then he’ll pack up Michelle and the kids and return to Chicago where he’ll author a memoir, begin soliciting funds for a $250 million presidential library, establish a consultancy and/or foundation, sit on numerous corporate boards and civic committees, and be trotted out to make obligatory comments on the issues of the day and the fawning corporate media will treat him as some elderly statesman, who secretly tells his friends that he is happy not to have the burdens of office but misses the perks.
Meanwhile the rest of us will be struggling to survive Great Depression 2.0 and a batshit crazy Republican occupying the WH.

The terrifying reality that I don’t think any of us want to accept is that the democrats and Obama would actually rather lose their office than have to adopt progressive policies. We often go along with the democrats because we think they are actually motivated to win. The reality is that if Obama or any other conventional democrat had to choose between supporting, say, the public option in order to retain their office or siding with the insurance industry and losing their office, then they’d choose to lose their office. It’s time progressives accepted that reality. It’s a pretty simple decision actually. Side with lobbyists and lose your office, but you and your family members are guaranteed fabulous jobs as lobbyists or paid board members in companies like Exxon. Side with progressives and end your political career. What option do you think makes more sense to the lizard brains in DC?

I slogged through snow and puddles of icy water in for several weekends in February in RI for Obama’s primary campaign, going door to door in unfriendly neighborhoods. I went up to Manchester County NH for the presidential campaign– again a white working class area not at all receptive to a black candidate. I donated to the campaign and felt, for the first time in my life, real exhilaration when I marked my ballot for Barack Obama.
This time I will vote my conscience and vote for a third party candidate. After his craven, dishonest campaign speech (for AIPAC?) in the UN, he lost my vote, absolutely. Justice in Palestine is too important an issue for him to grovel to the likes of Netanyahu.

They weren’t trying to pull a snow job on people about that trainwreck of a health care bill, for example, back when DKos was hollering that passing it would fix health care and save the House for Democrats. Good policy is good politics, and that piece of shit was neither.
