Haley said two weeks ago she’d been told that of hundreds of job applicants at the Savannah River Site, a nuclear reservation owned by the U.S. Energy Department, half failed a drug test. But Jim Giusti, a spokesman for Energy Department, told HuffPost that of the workers hired over the past few years, less than 1 percent failed a test. Additionally, only new hires — not applicants — have to submit to testing in the first place.
So far, just the usual dishonest Republican smears against the unemployed that we’ve come to expect. Haley finally admitted that there was no factual basis for her claim, and then explained that she’s “never felt like I had to back up what people tell me,” because she just assumes that everyone who tells her anything must be honest and well-informed.
Okay, fine, she’s lazy and gullible and happy to jump on whatever talking point gets floated her way. But now that she has finally seen the light and realized that the factoid she says she’s used “a million times” as justification for drug-testing unemployed people is complete hooey?
[E]ven though the claim has proven false and Haley has promised not to repeat it, the governor said she still wants drug tests tied to jobless benefits and a revamped job training program.
There you have it. Even after Republicans’ zombie lies are exposed and debunked, they still base policy on them like nothing ever happened. Sure, unemployed people aren’t all (okay, half) drug addicts, but someone once told Haley they were, and that’s all that matters. See also: Voter fraud.

These people live in a strange world – deaf and blind, but gawd knows, never mute. But then, asshats never have to pay a price.
Hey, Eli. I’m having a mad day. How about you?
Joseph Gobble would be proud
IOKIYAA (It’s Okay If You’re An Asshat)
Hey, Twain. They’re all pretty mad, really.
If they are going to live off the government teat, then they should indeed be shown to be obeying the drug laws. What do they have to be afraid of anyway?
Nikki Haley knows that she can repeat this lie because it appeals to the prejudices of the people who support her.
Suspicionless drug testing is that hardly fecal perennial — y’know, the policy turd that just won’t flush — the utility of which is long dispositively refuted but remains as a corporate welfare staple beloved by the autocrat class.
Hey, maybe the GOP should combine the two issues I mentioned and require a drug test before you can vote!
Don’t give them any ideas.
If congress and staff are tested first it would work for me. I’m mean all drugs or ?
Actually, it’s more like “anything that confirms her preconceived notions is accepted without reflection or skepticism”.
“Unemployed people are unemployed because they are defective. Here’s an anecdote that confirms it. Oh, this particular anecdote is wrong? So what? Unemployed people are still unemployed because they are defective.”
There are two things at work here.
One is the medieval worldview. In an economy based on subsistence agriculture, there is always work for anyone who can possibly use a hoe. They simply will not accept that an industrial or post-industrial economy does not, cannot, and will not produce full employment. Thus, it can’t be the system (in which they themselves prospered), it must be a moral failure (because that’s how a magical world works) on the part of the unemployed.
The other is more pragmatic. If you are trying to create a workforce that accepts $100 per week wages, you need to get rid of unemployment insurance.
Well, of course I’m assuming that only people who share her worldview are allowed to tell her anything in the first place, but yeah, point taken.
But he’s a turkey as well as an asshat!
Where does she think the unemployed are getting the MONEY to support a drug habit, fer chrissakes? Um, DUH!
I’ve got a bag of hammers here at home that’s waaaaaay smarter than this POS politician!
Eli!
Same thing with Bachmann and the vaccine causing something or other. They hear something like that and of course it’s true, and they pick it up and run with it.
Everyone does this to some extent. Conservatives live in a fantasy world anyway and seem to be particularly susceptible.

Buzz!
“Hammers” is obviously drug slang for cocaine.
50%, 1%, what’s really the difference?
Discrediting unemployment is a key tactic. Watch for it.
We had Steve King last week complaining about how nobody would look for a job if you are giving them unemployment.
We, being reality-based life forms, realize this is nuts. Nobody is going to kick back on the sofa and watch Oprah while raking in the big $300 per week instead of going out to get an $800 per week job. Mostly because you can’t live on $300 per week.
But it makes more sense if you rephrase it as “how are we going to force people to work for $100 per week if you are giving them $300 per week?”.
And the tired line about “we need guest workers to do the work Americans won’t do” makes more sense if you rephrase it as “we need guest workers to do the work Americans won’t do for $100 per week”.
Sort of like the fortune cookie game where you add “in bed” to every fortune.
The 50-Or-1% Doctrine.
Superb link, vb, and much appreciated.
You should consider a diary which includes this Thesis Prospectus, by Robert E. Gladd, CQE, it is very well done.
DW
I think we should drug test FDL front pagers.
As long as Dr Pepper is not considered a drug, I should be fine.
Thanks. That’s my grad work.
Dayen has to be on something. He’s relentless.
I wonder what Nikki’s drug test would reveal, probably Prozac or some other Happy Pill.
I subsequently expanded on some of my core arguments here:
http://bgladd.blogspot.com/2008/07/privacy-and-4th-amendment-amid-war-on.html
Obama and the Democrats Refuse to let facts get in the way of policy, also.
This big lie for example: The Government Cannot Create Jobs. Jobs must be created in the Private Sector.
Nikki Haley = Haley Barbour with a Vagina.
You are obviously trying to raise the level of discourse here.
Wait, I thought that was meth…oh, no, meth is crank.
Whatevs
My bag of hammers is still smarter than this POS crank politician!
Wasn’t it Goebbels who said that the sheeple will accept big lies but reject small ones? He had a good ride until the end.
Now that is scary.
Turns out people will accept all sizes of lies, actually.
ELI!
You’ve got to be one sick, twisted motherfucker to make it your life’s work to screw the poor even more than they already have been.
Haley and ilk are ideologues. For such folks, reasoning through cause and effect relationships and considering verifiable empirical evidence that might be used to form conclusions are entirely irrelevant. These things simply are not included in their formulae. This is why when someone says something that matches their preconceived notions they don’t question it. Theirs is an exclusive, authoritarian, tribal world dominated by fear. And as long as one is afraid, it is very hard to learn anything. This is why presenting ideologues with data makes no impression on them. It does not address their fundamental issue of fear.
MARGARET!
Have you worn a “Perry Sucks” tea shirt to work yet?
Where is Hannah Arendt when you need her?
“Everyone does this to some extent. Conservatives live in a fantasy world anyway and seem to be particularly susceptible.”
Conservatives often tend to be authoritarian followers, and authoritarian followers tend to substitute “expert” conclusions or received wisdom–provided it comes from the proper authority–for their own thinking. Things are easier and safer this way. Follow the rules. Obey the boss. Go to Heaven.
(Great summation at 12, btw.)
Obama ALSO “REFUSES to let facts get in the way of policy”. The difference is, what Obama has done will negatively affect my life & my family’s life FOR DECADES. Shame on Obama, he is the WORST Democratic President EVER!
Or something someone said to them once that they never bothered to verify but which sounded good.
Nope. That would definitely be against the rules about partisan politicking.
Yeah, but it’s actually a broader human cognitive affliction (one facet of which is “confirmation bias”). The recent Mercier/Sperber paper “Why Do Humans Reason?” (PDF) proffers that argument is, adaptively, about winning, about carrying the day — not about searching for “objective” truths.
Trial lawyers, advertisers, and politicians have the special gene for this.
“verifiable empirical evidence” is a pedantic pain in the ass.
Obama’s anything but an Ideologue, yet he fits your “fear” description to a t.
And Obama is a thousand times more dangerous than Nikki Haley.
Q. If there’s no evidence of drug abuse among applicants for UI and if the costs of testing greatly exceed the savings resulting from disqualifying drug users, why is Haley still in favor of drug testing?
A. She wants to (a) humiliate people who apply for benefits (after all, it’s their fault that they find themselves out of work) and (b) appeal to Republican racists who view all recipients of public assistance as lazy, drug-abusing African Americans.
That’s not a spelling error. When you’re talking about Perry, it’s “tea shirt,” not “tee shirt.”
Corporate welfare is always a big element of this shit. E-Z money for the piss labs.
Think about it. Follow the money.
ELI!
Teh crazy is only outdone by teh stoopid which is out done by the heartless.
LeSigh.
Indeed it is broader. But it seems to show up with more frequency among conservatives and the religious and appears to be influenced by education, identity anxieties, and real or perceived dangers and control mechanisms for dealing with them, among other things.
Thanks for the link! Very timely. I was just thinking today while reading TBOGG’s post on Nader and Palin how for many progressives, despite claims to the contrary, the goal is not the greater good and the “objective” truths that might inform those efforts, but winning. I wonder if the economic decline, increased mobility and all the other factors that decrease a sense of community in the US might help lead to a conclusion that argument is primarily about winning?
Lady you held yer own mightily today in the face of teh stoopid from people I’ve never seen or heard of.
N sadly, some newer regulars at FDL who just embarassed their selves.
Well done!
*G*
LARUE!
*notmoreshitatnight*
Where do you people COME from?
Been like this all day long . . .
*rollseyes*
Well, vb, I am very impressed and I hope that you might share this work with the “Just Say Now” crew. I am familiar with a number of issues which you raise and your work is not merely first-rate, it is exemplary.
If and when the “endless war on drugs” is seriously taken to rigorous task, then your work should figure most prominently.
DW
Yeah, no shit!!
*EEK*
a false positive?
Obama does not fit the stereotype of the ideologue. He is not a Bible-banger or a NeoCon fundie, for example. But he may be an ideologue of sorts: The kind who worships expertise and the correct conclusions that they produce. He does not strike me as the dispassionate pragmatist following where reason and evidence lead him.
Yeah, what a moran!!!!
;-)
Plato and Socrates must be quite disappointed that rhetoric has fallen so low . .
;-)
Thank you. I am humbled.
All I ever wanted to do was play guitar for a living.
Seriously.
Here’s another link of mine: http://www.bgladd.com/Total_Information_Awareness/
Including this snarky little coda, which I actually snailmailed.
http://www.bgladd.com/Total_Information_Awareness/TIA_Report.html
They never fucking quit.
I’m sure I have a NSA dossier, lol…
Here in Florida, the crook in charge, (that made his money stealing from the money supposed to go to the poor), is charging welfare recipients for a drug test BEFORE they get assistance. If they want their check they have to pay $30 FIRST!
How do you come up with $30 FIRST in order to get your $120/month?
Drug testing is just another way to exclude and denigrate.
BTW doesn’t anyone remember Ronny Raygun suggesting he was going to test all civil servants and the SCOTUS saying no? Government employees, other than special jobs cannot be drug tested. It was because the test for pot can’t tell if you did it at home 5 weeks ago, or 5 minutes ago at work, i.e. an invasion of privacy, and it is requiring you to prove your innocence without probable cause.
vb, you is something else, entirely. I’m going to be looking at these two links for more than a little while …
I thank you.
;~DW
That second link is priceless . . . . ever wonder how purple they turn when they read stuff like that?
*G*
You is in good company with said dossier, vb … least-wise from my perspective, having been “of interest” since nineteen, sixty, and four …
;~DW
Here I think is the rub, and what gets us to referencing Goebbels’ quotes: If we are interested in decreasing the level of Fascism in the US, in the Wilhelm Reich sense of the term, and the attendant Haleys in the political profession, then the level of fear has to go down first. It seems to be fear that is the inescapable foundation of Fascist tendencies. However, we have a society and economy that has been built on fear since Hiroshima and Nagasaki. If fear left the equation, the whole fucking thing would fall apart. And a whole lot of folks from across the socioeconomic spectrum don’t want that. A rock and a hard place.
I know Chapter and Verse on all of that crap.
That mendacious fuck, Poindexter.
“Drug testing is just another way to exclude and denigrate.”
And make easy money for the labs.
“And Obama is a thousand times more dangerous than Nikki Haley.” Really?! Are you sure about that? The visage of the Great and Powerful Oz a thousand times more dangerous? :)
“Crucifixion’s a doddle.” –Matthais
Thanks, Larue. I was really tired when it was over.
You is a verra, verra, bad man, vb …
My guts are hurting … both cats and the dog are looking at me very strangely … and I’m not even on the floor any…more.
Geez … I’m glad I did not have a libation at hand or I’d be grumpin’ and cleanin’ stuff off … everywhere.
You is primo bad!
You is now an official good friend of mine, yes indeedy.
;~DW
Thanks for that link, I was beginning to think I was the only one who remembered all that crap.
“You is now an official good friend of mine”
Consider it reciprocated.
OOH. I missed that. Where was it?
Belatedly, ELI!
I’ve usually toddled off to bed by now.
I guess I pretty much lost that battle.
Not that I will quit.
Great post, Eli.
And ya still attract some purdy strange types.
The stuff that goes on here’bouts …
;~DW
The letter was brilliant!
It was TBogg’s thread this morning with close to 500 comments!
Our whole family was no doubt, enshrined as such, from my dad’s work in SE Asia for USOM/AID, etc. doing refugee resettlement work in the hills while Air America flew about.
;-)
MOLLY!
Thanks, DW.
Sadly, fear is the ONLY thing that contains the asshats from propogating their hate spewing and abuse of women, teh gay, people of color, people of proggy and in general more enlightened humans.
They will NOT stop abusing us until their fear of us s greater.
We must somehow, make the evil suffer consequences for their hate mongering and manipulation.
N then recapture the SCOTUS n somehow get legislation implemented to reverse the course this nation has undertaken to become a BLIGHT upon humans and the rest of the world.
Sadly, I don’t see any of that happening n my lifetime, and I hope to have about 25-30 years left on this rock . . . altho I might live to regret that as things get worse for us all.
LeSigh.
I LOVE the word mendacious . . . need to use it more often.
Again, great work you’ve shared tonite . . . thanks.
Lady, we is in it together . . . many of us.
*G*
I miss BobbyG. He said the funniest things.
All in the TBogg thread earlier today, and then again dredged up again by so called proggy Michael Cavlan, who looks more n more like a con job using FDL to gin up donations.
My most recent thot is, I really, really, really need to stop responding to those folks that seem to be abusing FDL ‘n MyFDL for fundraising efforts, for propaganda efforts and such.
Choke off their ability as it were, if we ALL just simply didn’t respond.
*G*
Just a thot.
The robo Koch/GOP/DNC/Corporte replies are a ‘nother whole issue.
On we trudge!
Who’s BobbyG?
Stuck muh nose in there fer a minute, said nuthin’ and got out … quick-like, Twain. BTW, left ya a wee missive back yonder there on the “auntie” thread.
;~DW
Wow, who knew that Nikki Haley was a right-wing bubble girl?
It must be getting really crowded in that right-wing bubble, Nikki Haley, Michele Bachmann, everyone that listens to Fox News or right-wing rant radio. And smoke in the bubble, the smoke. With all of the right-wingers’ pants being on fire, they are probably having trouble seeing through all the smoke. Don’t they know that that much toxic smoke can be unhealthy?
I understand your point. But I’m not convinced that an increase in fear and suffering consequences actually solves the problem of the fear-addled. It can produce the semblance of a solution, of containment, but it is a fleeting remedy that only addresses symptoms. What seems to work quite well for those overcome with fear and the control addiction and punishment fetishism that follows from their anxiety is the alleviation of their fears through empathy, community, exposure to others, education, and positive experiences challenging authority. Making them suffer in fear in an effort to control the sadistic beast in all of us is too close to their MO for my liking. There are more effective options.
The ideology and policies of the right never change. The “beards” they cultivate to grow-over and hide their never changing, never altered ideological goals.
Right-wing rhetoric is the glove form-fit to “pretty-up” the mangled claw it covers.
To point, the GOP has been trying to kill Social Security for 7 decades! They still actively blame FDR for caving to the “commies” at Yalta! They see government as a “neutron bomb”, a tiny self-contained yet threatening device that’s almost always off-to-the-side until it’s time to wipe-out the people and loot their remaining possessions. Just ask Grover Nordquist and financiers.
History pretty much proves that the only thing that keeps the evil in check is fear of repurcussion for acting out as evil.
I’ll stand by that till my grave.
School yard bullies is the analogy, if left unchecked they terrorize.
Extract that to global politics, same actions, same results.
Sometimes, ya just gotta throw a punch and stab at the beast as if yer life were on the line.
Cuz it is, daily.
Well put, but the political process in this country is pretty much the same regardless of party affiliation anymore.
It’s called corporate fascism, and it’s killing we the people.
I’m sure you know that.
“History pretty much proves that the only thing that keeps the evil in check is fear of repurcussion for acting out as evil.”
Larue, that statement is precisely what I hear from the hard right, from Christian Fundamentalists to NeoCons, all the time. And then they tell me that their assessment is an inflexible article of faith and that their survival depends on the defeat and domination of The Other.
