Years and years and years ago, my cousin Betsy and my brother both lived up in Vermont. The rest of us ventured up there every Thanksgiving for good eats, good drinks and good company. It really was the classic over-the-river-and-through-the woods holiday.
Betsy was a computer scientist working out of a lab at Dartmouth College and one fateful year she introduced me to the computer game Adventure – now known as Colossal Cave Adventure. Mind you, there was no monitor connected to her terminal, these were the days pre-PC, it was all text and imagination. But I was instantly hooked on those twisty mazes of little passages, I played and played and played all through that weekend until early Sunday morning when I blew the fuse. ‘Twas a landmark event that no one in my family has let me forget *g*.
But since those wee early days, I really haven’t played many computer games. I did buy a Gateway computer back when they were the bees knees, and I ordered MYST, but I never did fire it up (wonder if it would work on Windows Vista?). Supposedly there was something special about that Gateway operating system that maximized the visual effects (needless to say, that cow spotted computer has long gone to the great abattoir in the sky).
I have played Jewel Quest and the mah jongg, plus a few other simple games; but what games do you guys play? Mass Effect? The Space Adventure? Anyone into World of Warcraft? I’m curious how one even dips a toe into that game.
How about poker or blackjack online? Bridge maybe? Computer versions of board games?
What do you play to refresh and relax after a long day at work? My bored curious mind wants to know.

About Firedoglake
ellie! i’ve been playing gardens of time through facebook…. oddly addicting and i have not thought of myself as a gamer
I can play free cell solitaire for about 20 minutes at a time. I did Myst –remember that one?. Otherwise my games are more physical. I am with Maru.

i still play free cell solitaire
What is this ‘after work’ that you speak of?
Elliot!
The only computer games I play are solitaire and occasionally Mahjong. I have played a few others in the past, but just never really got hooked on it.
When the Internet was just starting up about all there was to use a computer for was games. Then Compuserve came along and I got hooked on connecting with the people. Still am.
oo will have to sign into FB and check it out
lol
Maru has boxberger’s, don’t you agree?
lololol
i sent ya an invite to make it easy for ya
That Maru just knows how to live. Every thing is a wonderful adventure.
I have two Maru clones that live in my house. They do most of their adventures after the lights are out. I have come to now be able to sleep through an earthquake and not be surprised at the lamp upside down in the morning.
I haven’t played a computer game of any type since I stopped working.
When I get bored, I walk away from the computer.
But, that’s just me. I’ll read or go work in my garden.
But, my 17 year old plays games on the computer. League of Legends.
Can’t say I ever tried it. I enjoy a good tabletop roleplaying game, but something like WoW just seems to take away any of the social entertainment value.
That made me smile.
My Betsy was my little sister that I lost 3 years ago. We used to play Scrabble at the beach until late, late at night.
Not.sad. Just remembering. Thank you.
Love you Betsy.
v.
that’s about where I’ve been, plus the Jewel Quest.
A biological sister or a pet sister?
Sorry either way.
I must have started my computer gaming career just shortly after you did. I burned my own fuse out on the next generation adventure game, Zork. That was about the last time I spent having fun in front of a terminal, but it did lead to a career in IT which is why any opportunity away from a monitor is appreciated (FDL excepted, of course). I almost hesitate to say but you can play some of the old Infocom text based games online:

You are standing in an open field west of a white house, with a boarded front door.
There is a small mailbox here…
aww – can’t imagine life w/o kittehs
I am glad you smiled and glad you know how to remember. :-)
I have played a fair number of others, mostly when visiting my son as he and his kids are into it, but I have never really gotten hooked on it myself. I would rather take a hike in the mountains or go fishing.
Nor can I. It just doesn’t seem normal if none are around.
oo League of Legends – I’ll have to check that out, that one is new to me.
did you do D & D?
my mom was a Betsy too, hence my cousin’s name – miss her terribly, too
The only time I was really hooked on video games was 30 years ago when I was pregnant with my first child, my daughter, and wasn’t smoking. Atari -pong and pac man.
Dates me, I guess. (not going to smile)
I have always had kittehs. Down to one who
thinksknows she is queen of the roost around here.Om – I’m really so sorry. We’re too young to lose sisters.
I can’t imagine. Just can’t.
real sister. the best.
night, ya’ll. ohmmmmm
I did play a fair bit of both of those in the bars when I was in grad school. Good mindless entertainment.
It’s Good To Be Queen. Bless her heart.
Thanks for a great topic Elliott. And so good to touch base with you all late nighters…You are are such a neat bunch. .But I have to leave for now. I am nodding off here in front of the monitor……Have a great evening…..
btw OT Go Sooners.
Sure, who didn’t? Not my favorite RPG, but still the best gateway drug the hobby has to offer.
how fun!
amazing how far one can go – visually – with imagination.
Ta, Blanche. See you tomorrow. Sleep through that 3:00 am thingy, okay.
Or if not, just ohmmmmmm.
she certainly is the Queen, no doubt about it.
nighters!
Peaceful dreams, TS.
I really mean it.
Night!
El and demi,
scuse me, wine talkin.

I think I outta go too.
Group Hug!!! Kisses optional, but suggested.
Sounds like we’re gonna call it a night here in Chez Puma. Peace out, y’all!
Night! Sleep well.
‘evening, all-
So the local news here in Tampa, reporting on renovations under way at Tampa International, says, without a hint of irony: “Officials hope to upgrade the bathrooms in advance of next year’s Republican National Convention.”
I kid you not.
Hmm. Well, if I want to unwind a little, I’ll play a little Devil Whiskey, a relatively recent (’03, I think) turn-based CRPG modeled after the old Bard’s Tale Series. Fan produced, but still very nice and a good nostalgia tonic. If I want to potentially waste a good while, I’ll start up that old life-sucker, Nethack. I honestly have NO IDEA how many times in my youth I’d look up and realize that it was 3 am and I needed to get up and go to school in a few hours.
And there is a mobile version for Nethack… Cower, brief mortals!
Got to make room for all those “wide stances.”
gotta make it toe tappin’ friendly
I play Warcraft. It’s actually pretty easy in the lower levels, and the even have free trials. The early walk-thrus are very helpful in learning the mechanics of the game. Sure, there are a few jerks on every server, but on average I’ve found people to be pretty helpful at times. Even got through a few really difficult quests with the aid of Horde players (who are technically supposed to be at war with the Alliance side I typically play).
Otherwise though, I’m totally hooked on the storyline EA games such as Dragon Age and Mass Effect. Also looking forward to giving Star Wars: The Old Republic MMORPG game a spin later this year.
this is how pathetic I am, what’s CRPG?
Oh, my… Zork. That reminds me.
Who else loves them some interactive fiction? You’ll like this:
It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.
Old-school parser-based fun for all!
ahh, very good tips all about the place
Just ‘computer role playing game’ — older term to separate it from the D&D and other tabletop role-playing games many of us grew up with in the 80s and 90s. Nowadays, most just call ‘em RPG.
In case you were wondering: MMORPG = Massive(ly) multiplayer online role playing game.
No worries, mate. The alphabet soup can get a mite stirred up these days.
CRPG = Computer Role Playing Game. Basically any game produced under some definitions, but more generally acknowledged as one influenced by D&D or some other tabletop RPG.
Edited to note:
Ninja’d by Becca!
o Oh o -simple enough
I am raiding in World of Warcraft right now. Paladin Tank. I enjoy the city builders and am demoing Tropico 4 now. Love Zuma Blitz on Facebook.
In WoW, I’m usually playing either my beast-master hunter or else my enhancement shammy. Feral druid whenever I get bored with those two.
One thing I noticed a few days back was I hadn’t yet played the two Dead Space games — and they’re dirt-cheap now. So I’ve started in on the first… finding it interesting, although the movement controls are a pain on the PC. Clearly designed as a console game.
oo I’m happy for an enhancement shimmy — oh wait, that was enhancement shammy.
I could go for a feral druid
Time for me to toddle off. Take care all.
I really appreciate the suggestions and comments — going WoW is still Greek but still intriguing anyway…
me too also as well, nighters
Tetris, I was forkin’ addicted to Tetris. This was about 12 years ago. I could not stop playing. It was crazy.
I was living in a little house in Sonoma. It was raining and raining and I was playing and playing Tetris. I stood up from the computer, walked to the front door, opened it, thought a minute and sailed the Tetris disk out into the front yard and never played again.
Try this one on.
Soitaire, Minesweeper, Mah Jongg, and Boomshine.
Otherwise I’m knitting or reading or something. Possiblly while doing something else.
(I spend way too much time on the computer, though. And I mapped that cave in text form.)
extra ‘executive washrooms’, I guess.
> Kill troll with sword.
You aren’t carrying one.
I saw that one happen. Thief walked through troll room. It was a very short game….
Somewhere I have a box with classic Tetris. I used to play it a lot. Sometimes got up past 7000 points before it got past me.
I think given the right set of circumstances I could become addicted to shit.
I’m fairly surprised at how few gamers there are at the Lake.
I’m a regular gamer . . . have been since my parents got an Atari 2600. Don’t play on my computer though — pretty much exclusively on the 360 (gamertag: busboy33). Types of games? well, just about anything — FPSs, racers, strategy, cards, music, you name it. Currently waiting for Gears3 next Tuesday, Forza4 next month and Skyrim in November.
Don’t play in open rooms though. There’s just too many jerks. I’ve got a good group of players (Team Waxy) and we just play privately. I’ve got people in my Team from around the country and around the world . . . and although I’ve played with these people for years, I’ve met only two. Despite never meeting them in person they are my good friends, a I’d rather spend an hour or two laughing with them online than watching tv any day of the week.
Looks like I’m here after everyone has left. My “game of choice” is Plants vs Zombies. It is especially fabulous on those long plane flights to & from the Mainland.
My fav game is toobz surfin, n FDL is my home port.
Games? Eh, not at all.
Younger, I loved Pacman n Pong in places I worked.
But the game stuff is just not that hot for me.
I prefer FDL.
N speaking with and arguin with, REAL people.
;-)
I plan Solitaire, Hearts, Tetris, Blackjack, Poker and Backgammon when I get bored. I don’t like the on-line version, because a lot of times I will save the save and come back later to finish it.
I use to play Adventure all the time on my Apple II+, I wish someone would make a browser version using Java or just plan Javescript
