You know what’s scary about Bachman? She has her own world view and she believes it’s the real thing. I think she’s insane. She’s been indoctinated rather than taught and now she knows no other point of view. Her education wasn’t based on facts and now it’s so ingrained in her that she really, really believes that liberalism is going to destroy the U.S. and that Obamacare is evil etc. And if you point out the hypocrisy (such as her family getting subsidies) it doesn’t even regiser in that little brain of hers. The most infuriating is that these people run as Christians and they are the least Christian people I know. That doesn’t register in that little brain either.
You wanna know something scarier? We’re producing thousands more just like her. Home-schooled nitwits who use the old testament to determine how things should be.

It’s really a shame, too, because I remember during the Watergate hearings there were some really good Republicans. They did what they had to do and destroyed their own president.

The Republicans are deeper in the pockets of the corporations and the wealthy, but for them it doesn’t entail a betrayal of their (supposed) core principles.

The GOP is now the political party of “The Lord of the Flies”.

I’m pretty sure the current crop of Republicans would do that too if Nixon were president, but it would only be because he was too liberal.

That conundrum can be applied, basically, to every nationally prominent conservative in my lifetime (born 1963). And I say that having been raised in the south by hard-core southern Republicans, so it’s not like I’m making a judgment like that from an inexperienced point of view.

But that being said, these talking points that Bachmann and Perry trot out (no pun intended) are all conceived and vetted by handlers. Bachmann has no earthly idea what the U.S. Immigration policy was in 1890. I guarantee you that. But those who conceive her policy stances—and tell her what to say—are VERY aware indeed. And so is the audience.

That was at best the right thing done for the wrong reason. The thing to call Perry on is the obvious corruption that surrounded that order (see Margaret @71). Crazy Mishie’s anecdotal accusations about Gardasil causing mental disability are ludicrous on their best day and in a just world they would chase her right out of the running.

My research has convinced me that the doubts and fears expressed by many about Gardasil are not ludicrous. The vaccine is still new, it was pushed into use very quickly, and its safety and value have not been effectively demonstrated. The many reports of extreme adverse effects need to be studied much more. I am also suspicious of the role of Merck and Co., producers of the vaccine, in persuading “august medical bodies” (as Nancy Snyderman terms them) to prematurely vouch for the vaccine’s safety.

Under current conditions where medical care, especially pharmaceuticals are developed and marketed for profit we should be suspicious of all new products.

Obama is no more a tool of corporations than a mafia thug is a tool of the grocery store he shakes down. He favors some sectors with corrupt privilege, from whom he exacts tribute, while disfavoring others, from whom he can still exact tribute under the threat of honoring, capriciously, the solemn oath he made to take care that the laws are faithfully executed.
Again, for the sake of clarity: Obama is the patron, the corporations are his clients. Such an arrangement has existed since long before democracy was invented.

It plays well enough in northern states that Bachmann is a rep from Minnesota. I live up here.

This post reflects the typical misconception about how the politics of immigration works. The desire for more enforcement, not more immigration is not just about what the right wing wants, it’s about what most people want. That’s not to be confused with what most politicians want, or with what most elites want.

On Michelle Bachman, I think she is a smart person. I wouldn’t vote for her because I don’t agree with most of her positions, but she’s hardly the only pol out there that makes the occasional embarrassing mistake. V.P. Joe Biden is well known to make similar mistakes. For example, not long ago he talked to someone on the record about F.D.R. being on television even though the television hadn’t been invented yet.

Also, I think Bachman was just talking about how liberals, in the 1960s, opened up immigration again after it had been turned way down earlier in the century, after the great wave that had come earlier.

I know liberals are in love with immigration, for some reason. I for one don’t want 500 million people in this country, and I would prefer that it remain majority white, especially given how blacks treat some white people in Africa, and how horrible so much black “leadership” is there. As far as I’m concerned this country has been extremely successful with its white leadership, in spite of all the problems.
