US Park Police Seek to Intimidate Oil Pipeline Protesters

By: Kevin Gosztola Sunday August 21, 2011 8:04 am

This list of recent protests at the White House and the way law enforcement and courts have handled them shows the US Park Police are interested in preventing the Tar Sands Action from building momentum. They are willing to teach those a lesson in a society where people who are responsible for oil spills rarely, if ever, face punishment for their negligent acts.

Feinstein: “Service members continue to receive drug linked to permanent brain damage”

By: Jeff Kaye Sunday August 21, 2011 6:45 am

Senator Dianne Feinstein put out a press release indicating that the Department of Defense should consider taking the anti-malarial drug mefloquine, also known as Lariam, out of the DoD drug formulary as it is too dangerous.

Feinstein also indicated the drug has been administered to military personnel without the safeguards put in place by a 2009 Department of Defense protocol. Moreover, according to the press release, “These service members are now suffering from… preventable neurological side effects….”

And what “preventable neurological side effects” were these?

Sunday Talking Heads: August 21, 2011

By: Elliott Sunday August 21, 2011 2:00 am

Mostly horse racing again today but that will include some coverage of Obama and his beloved base. Peterr speaks: Given that Scarecrow will be hosting his own DC-based Sunday morning event at the DC jail, it seems someone else will have to give his usual “WTF were the bookers thinking?” comments. I’ll start the ball [...]

By: Bill Egnor Saturday August 20, 2011 8:00 pm

In June the Dawn probe from NASA decelerated into orbit around the mini-planet. Since then we have been getting more and more images. The picture above is one such. It is three large craters that overlap just enough make them look like a snowman.

BART’s Protest Position Does Not Withstand Legal Scrutiny

By: Kevin Gosztola Saturday August 20, 2011 7:00 pm

BART spokesperson Linton Johnson held a press conference to address the need to disrupt communications in advance of a lawful, peaceable assembly.

He spoke of a US Supreme Court case from 1969 that he said supported BART’s right to do so. Indeed, there could be no other case that Mr. Johnson was referring to besides Brandenburg v. Ohio (1969), the 1969 case that said that prior restraints upon seditious speech were valid in such narrow circumstances that the government must prove that the seditious speech was going to cause an “imminent lawless action” before a restraint on speech could stand.

No case following Brandenburg has ever held speech to constitute an “imminent lawless action.” BART, as judge, jury and executioner of free speech, is the sole body to reach that conclusion.

Jane and Others Jailed Till Monday, Take Action, Support the Tar Sands Sit-In

By: Elliott Saturday August 20, 2011 4:00 pm

The President promised in 2008 that when he was elected the earth would begin to heal. Instead, he allowed 65 environmentalists to be arrested and held for two days on a charge that’s equivalent to a traffic ticket, in order to deter others from following our example.

I hope that people across the country will see through their ploy and be inspired by how many of us have backed up our beliefs with our bodies. People from all over the United States and Canada are on their way here right now to join us. Take a stand for what you believe in! Come join the Tar Sands Action!
