This summer’s Membership Drive is coming to a close soon. I’d be remiss if I didn’t share with you just how important the summer drive is: Firedoglake really needs your help. And, not to put too fine a point on it, but this country really needs Firedoglake’s help, too.
The progressive viewpoint in mass media is practically lost. We’ve got barely one television news network, some magazines, and a bunch of new media on the interwebs. But I noticed one thing about “our” cable news network last week. When the big stories at Firedoglake were Eric Schneiderman’s resistance to the dirty bankster deal most state Attorneys General are embracing and the Tar Sands Action protester arrests at the White House, I didn’t see a single story on MSNBC about the White House arrests, until Chris Hayes bucked sponsors’ presumed pressure and interviewed Bill McKibben at the end of his Last Word episode, substituting for Lawrence O’Donnell.
Alone among MSNBC hours that week, not one Exxon/Mobil warm and fuzzy “fracking is wonderful” commercial aired during that hour. Previously, viewers had been saturated with that pleasant male voice lulling us into complacency about how happy fracking makes happy communities, and the dulcet tones of the America’s Natural Gas lady with her promise of jobs and clean energy. They were both entirely missing, I recall, from that hour Chris Hayes told America about the arrests of more than 300 people at the White House that week.
And as far as the bankster deal went, I was startled by the first commercial of The Rachel Maddow Show, when the friendly announcer who usually reminds me about Cisco Telepresence intoned, “The Rachel Maddow Show is brought to you by Bank of America.” I may have heard such announcements before, but I frankly don’t recall any MSNBC news program hour being entirely sponsored by a financial corporation. Especially not the biggest one teetering on the brink of insolvency, pressuring for a Get Out of Jail Free Card for all its mortgage origination, packaging, and foreclosure fraud.
None of this, of course, may have had any influence on the choice of stories for any of “our” favorite liberal programming on MSNBC. I can’t prove it did. And the hosts will surely claim journalistic independence from their advertising departments. As they should.
But — you never really know, do you, what you’re missing as a consumer of news? You never are privy to the decisions about what to cover, what to ignore, what deserves focus, and what to let slide. None of us are in the story meetings.
That’s different here. When Firedoglake member survey responses showed that the planet’s warming was a primary concern, you saw a shift in our focus. We got involved with the Tar Sands protests, and our leadership got arrested and spent some jail time for exercising First Amendment rights on behalf of the rest of us. When our members asked for more involvement in LGBT rights, you saw us engage with Lt. Dan Choi over his fight against aggressive prosecution of his own White House protest against DADT. When you pushed us to continue our efforts to expose the foreclosure crisis, with stories of failure-to-assist, we responded. When members wanted Bradley Manning’s torture ended, Firedoglake acted.
When Firedoglake knuckles under to funder pressure, you’re the funders. It’s your desire for activism and sunlight that drives the organization, our writers and our activism. Yes, we pay attention to what our funders want and where they want our focus — but our members are our funders.
We’ll never have the resources of an MSNBC — we don’t have an attached global armaments dealer. We’ll never even have the resources of a Huffington Post — we don’t have the luxury of a cushy divorce settlement driving us into the arms of a soft and lazy internet provider.
But we have one luxury no one else has: we have the most committed membership and the most responsive organization. So get on board. Don’t let Firedoglake get left behind. More important, don’t get left behind yourself. Join us now.

About Firedoglake
Teddy!
Good evening, all.
For what it’s worth, anybody who joins up while this post is live tonight will get a direct one-to-one call from me to chat about Firedoglake’s direction, plans, and activism. I’ll set up a call with you sometime this week so that we can talk when it’s convenient for both of us.
But you need to sign up at the Benefactor level for this exciting offer. That’s ten dollars a month. It’s a big lift, especially in these times, but we need your help (in case you hadn’t noticed lately).
It means enough to me that I’ll get your contact information from your signup tonight, and I’ll set up a time for a phone chat with you.
Thanks. Looking forward to some new Benefactors tonight!
Thank you, Teddy. So eloquent.
And to anyone reading this who’s NOT yet a member, please join. You won’t find the incredible combination of intelligence and passion — demonstrated by Teddy, among others — at any other “media outlet.”
FDL needs and deserves your support. And you, dear reader, deserve the good feeling that comes from being an active part of FDL.
Stop hey what’s that sound

teddy! firedoglake is a member supported organization and i’m dayam proud that i am a member. no corporate bottom line skewing the reporting – fiercely independent kick ass journalism. best money i’ve ever spent (other than my divorce)
So who’s in for a tenner a month, cap’n?
I appreciate everyone’s kind words here tonight. This is a really special place. Let’s keep the lights on, okay?
We have censor ship in our press none of our ideas to cut SS and Medicare got hardly a mention although we had majority support for those ideas.
Rep Ryan however was called by Tweety Chris Mathews the only serious person in Washigton with a plan and Mclaughlin was touting him as VP for his plan to cut SS and Medicare to fix the debt.
Healthcare debate National Healthcare and Drug Price controls would have saved more money but the news did not cover that.
Bias is reporting both sides of an issue an slanting the story. Censorship is not reporting stories.
FDL report what you want but you better have facts.
How many Beltway talking heads or Washington pols could survive at FDL with our google real time fact checking with the lies they say on tv?
We need our own interview show but we would never get guests.
You can get the “Original Firebagger” t-shirt, Dr. Dick, if you don’t have it already. ;-)
OT– Ugly discovery about de Fazio here. I went through Thomas myself to find the July 15, 2011 Amendment discussed.
Being part of FDL makes you feel as if you know something that will cause a change in the world. Let’s share it with others.

How can we investigate that charge? I’m sure we can think of other examples. This is the sort of thing Congress should look into.
We’ll never even have the resources of a Huffington Post — we don’t have the luxury of a cushy divorce settlement driving us into the arms of a soft and lazy internet provider.
*ouch* That’s gotta hurt…! ;-)
Aloha, Teddy…! A great pitch for FDL…! *g*
We’ll never have the resources of an MSNBC — we don’t have an attached global armaments dealer. We’ll never even have the resources of a Huffington Post — we don’t have the luxury of a cushy divorce settlement driving us into the arms of a soft and lazy internet provider.
Resources I thought they read FDL and the other Lefty blogs for story ideas at best they do some original reporting .
Huffpost got its deal because they could be controlled they are a quick view of lots of stories but if you want an intelligent conversation well Tambershall just moved here because huffpost is an unmoderated troll fest.
Here we read research ourselves and challenge/argue about everything to get to the truth.
The readers fact check the front pagers and each other we are a participatory news group not a Top Down one.
MSNBC has become the Obama White House’s pet network. You only need to look to Cenk Uygur’s dismissal and the hiring of Reverend Al to see that. How much coverage did Maxine Waters get for her town hall meetings in Detroit and Florida?
Not very damn much.
Yeah, I mulled that one over a bit after typing it, but thought it was worth the humor value. Marry a rich homosexual, start a blog for your celebrity friends: it’s one path to riches and fame, I guess.
Dang, and she didn’t even have to ‘put out’ to get it…! ;-)
We and the other Lefty Blogs are King Makers and Leg Breakers. We fact checked GOP lies about Obama in Real Time and helped get him elected we exposed Joe the Plumber as a Plant with our research.
Remember Maccaca we ended one GOPer’s hope to be President when the Mclaughlin Group said it would not hurt him politically, Trent Lott’s comments about how America would be better if Strom Thurmond was elected President when he ran a racial hate campaign we ended him.
Rep Ryan is now the most unpopular elected Politician in America even though Mclaughlin said he could be VP and Tweety called him Serious.
We get the majority of voters to support taxing the Rich more, to end both wars now, we get them to support Government creating jobs Despite no mention of our ideas in the Press!
Stand up and take a bow Us and the other Lefty Blogs are changing the minds of the majority of voters because we use facts! Because we encourage debate about the facts. Because everyone can get heard and change minds if they have facts!
We don’t try to sell a Corporate Agenda to voters who increasingly turn off the news. American Media, press, TV news, Radio is losing people to us.
Agreed they are a sad story but the best we got in network tv.
So, we went to the Hawthorne Street Fair today. It’s kind of cool to be going to events for the second time this year. It feels like PDX is really home.
Forty blocks of fun craziness: face painting, tarot cards and hybrid dolls; good food, mystery book store, and hot cops directing traffic.
More like “put up with it”.
Maybe FDL could have an internet radio channel just read the posts and comments out loud? I have no idea what it would cost but if we could get the satellite radio companies interested we could get more money.
Never doubt we make a difference here!
Gotta go bye:)
Night!
Think I will toddle off as well. Tomorrow is back to work, not that I am going to strain myself with any heavy lifting. Take care all.
Yes, but the shame is that many liberals think they’re getting all the news from MSNBC. And they’re not. I was amazed when Chris Hayes had Bill McKibben on to talk about the White House protests and arrests over the tarsands pipeline. I’ll be watching to see how often Chris gets to sub for Lawrence in the future.
Good night, DrDick.
Niters, TCU
NOT!
“the answer to life, universe and everything” (video)
{ *snork!* }
Aloha, TCU and Dr. D…!
I went to a talk that Ariana gave about her latest book a few years ago. She didn’t want to talk politics at all. All she wanted to talk about was her self help book for women. You know, the kind of book that tells women to have a good attitude and everything will be just hunky dory. The talk was in Sonoma so the audience was all feely goody and believed what Ariana was pushing. yuk. just yuk. I left early.
Hi, Teddy. I worry that when Chris’s new weekend show starts he won’t be on in prime time any more at all. I worry, in fact, that that’s the point of his getting a show at that time.
I do think I heard a story about Schneidermann on Rachel’s show. Could be wrong, it could’ve been NPR. Definitely one or both, but couldn’t tell you what day.
Is MSNBC really supposed to be the liberal answer to FOX? I thought all along it was Current.
I sent Arianna’s book to my cousin’s daughter, her oldest child, who was 17 at the time. Her dad, my cousin’s husband, has FOX on all the time. I never heard whether she read it, but I think would have been eye-opening. Probably she didn’t read it, though.
I listen to Rachel now with only one ear pricked up, so I’m entirely happy to be corrected. But I think we at FDL would have featured it if MSNBC had discussed it at all.
I could be wrong, though.
I would really love to see Al Jazeera aired here in the US…! ;-)
I was expecting to have more if a FDL type conversation and got a Glamour magazine type. Sometimes I am too serious.
YES, Indeed.
Come join me upstairs in a rousing rendition of Good Night Irene…! ;-)
But, but I have watched Al Jazeera here in the USA. It has been a while, and I can’t provide any details this late, but it is in my cable package.
Back from mini vacation.
Al Jazeera IS aired in the US. On Link TV, channel 375 on the satellite station.
As for MSNBC, Teddy is right (as in correct) Please, Bank Of America are sponsoring Rachel Maddow but she will not let it affect her? When she is pimping for the Goldman Sachs guy, president Obama?
Never mind the Cenk Of the Young Turks interview on you tube on why he “left” MSNBC. While Rachel Maddow is still there. Then there is the Keith Olbermann being fired issue.
As an aside folks.I push firedoglake everywhere I go. I am proud to be on board here.
As could I. Easily. I can never remember where I heard stuff, well, frequently, anyway.
And now I gotta go to bed.
Please. Let me introduce a fact of life before another word about “only pennies a day” and “why wait any longer?”:
It’s not quite the end of the month yet and I’m almost out of food, hoping to make the stretch. The Eagle shits on the 1st day of the month, and thank the Goddess for you know: the Big Ponzi Scheme.
I have a tiny allowance for donations. I worked hard to make good choices–3 of them–then had them take their piece of my flesh out of the bank monthly before I can make excuses for not.
I am NOT bitchin’. In fact I want you to keep plugging hard. I just want to affirm to others in my situation that it’s OK, you’re not alone. Yes it really is only pennies a day and yes the cause is extremely worthy, BUT yes you cannot come up with a week’s supply of food money just like magic. It’s OK. Do what you have to do to make up for what you cannot do. Let everyone know what is really happening, make sure they vote, start saving your pennies for next membership drive, etc.
