New congressional estimates say the trust fund that supports Social Security disability will run out of money by 2017, leaving the program unable to pay full benefits, unless Congress acts.
To say that SSDI is the thing that millions of unemployable Americans rely upon to live is an understatement.
But the future of SSDI and its funding is in the hands of people like Republican Representative Chip Cravaack of Minnesota. Chip was last seen quivering in fear and spewing out blatant falsehoods about funding Pell Grants. Representative Cravaack is a full-on TeaParty baby, who thinks things like government assistance to the needy have already taken this country to Marco Rubio’s land of ruination.
So just who is Cravaack to judge those who are in need of disability assistance?
Cravaack’s earned income for fiscal year 2010 topped out at $92,273; the cash comes in the form of disability payments for sleep apnea, which ended his flying career with Northwest Airlines, now Delta Airlines, in 2007.
Oh he’s well positioned to be a hypocrite — how completely unexpected. I bet he’s anti-Union too, guess who got him his disability?

In keeping with Tea Party philosophy couldn’t Rep. Cravaack work as a WalMart greeter? Ya know self reliance and accepting any job available and all.
x2
Thanks Attaturk. Tweeted.
And no doubt the rep. from teabaggagia will want to get the govermint out of his medicare.
The only thing worse than a hypocritical Republican is a spineless, traitorous Vichycrat.
Good morning, pups. Mr. Cohen is off today, so it’s Brooks and Krugman. In “President Rick Perry?” Bobo says the rise of the Republican presidential candidate reflects fundamental shifts in the electorate, and it’s time to take him seriously. Bobo, sweetie, the rise of Gov. Goodhair reflects fundamental shifts in the REPUBLICAN electorate, a point you didn’t seem to make terribly clear. Prof. Krugman, in “Bernanke’s Perry Problem,” says political intimidation has forced the Fed into inaction and is killing our last remaining hope for economic recovery.
Here they are.
The coffee and tea are ready, the cold drinks are in the fridge, and I’ve got corned beef hash with poached eggs for breakfast. I hope all the pups on the Atlantic coast stay safe during Irene. It looks like we won’t be getting anything but wind around 20-25 mph, and maybe (fingers crossed) some rain, but looking at the radar map the rain may stay to the east of us. If you’re under an evacuation warning, please take it seriously and be safe. Have a good day.
Thanks, Marion, seems Bernanke is taking the tack of the rest of semi-sane right wing official sorts, and letting the economy tank to show ‘Democrats can’t handle big government’ rant works for them. The media comply, since they also are intimidated by incessant attacks on any attempt at rationality.
He’s gotta tack that tack or people won’t believe that he’s a very serious™ person, (plus his future lobbying gig might fade away).
How many problems could be solved quickly if the congresscritters were in the same boat we are? Would Health care still be a problem if congress had to deal with United Health Care?
Pass Boxturtle’s law: Any benefit congress gets must also be federally funded for all Americans.
Boxturtle (WaHoo! Free haircuts!)
Alas, the Democrats have proven his point. They can’t handle government and they can’t handle the economy.
Boxturtle (His next job is making the voters forget that the GOP is no better)
I believe that will be a thinktank position, actually. And yes, their future career seems to dictate much of the failure to serve the public now.
Too bad O won’t follow this example.
If Big Gov’mint is defined as total and committed resistance to any public interest measures, yep.
Why should Obama resign? He’s probably pretty darn happy with what he’s accomplished so far.
Boxturtle (the fact that America is hurting doesn’t seem to register)
It does in Bernanke’s case certainly. He has no excuse to fundraise 24/7/365.25
Oh it registers….then they tighten the screws further.
Agree that O thinks he’s doing a great job. After all, he’s going to collect a billion from his donors and he’s thrown just enough crumbs to his voters to keep them happy. No wonder he gets pissy about criticism.
“pissy”?
He responds to criticism the way the old communist party in Soviet Union did. We just call our gulags “Black Sites” and rather than supress reporters we buy them off with access.
And people who disagree with him may get their caucus eliminated or their blog removed from the blog rolls. And have mean posts written about them on “mainstream” blogs.
Boxturtle (Sarah has the Palinistas, Obama has Daily Kos)
Morning all,
O walked the lenght and width of Martha’s Vineyard and couldn’t find any of the deprivation or hurting of which you speak.
To him it’s all good.
tjbs@18: Well, if he’d remove his sensory cluster from his posterior oriface he probably would have been able to find something, even there.
Boxturtle (Those rose colored galsses he has must be DaBomb!)
And get Biden?
*Holds out plate*
One of my fave breakfasts! But Bobo and Krugman (much as I like PK) give me indigestion.
And the reverse: Congress critters have to live with the health care, retirement, etc. the rest of us peons live with.
Good morning, pupses. Happy Friday!
In the spirit of the Got Mine, Screw You Files, I just read the article upstairs about Rick Perry and the Dead Peasant scam. I don’t think I can eat breakfast now.
Perry must have a gigantic man-crush on Phil Gramm. The deal would have made big bucks for Gramm and UBS, but possibly zilch for TX retired teacher’s funds. Wonder what would have been in it for Perry?
Wonder if the corporatemediawhores will bring this back up about Candidate Perry?
Chip Cravaack is a self-loathing closeted socialist. As are they all.
that was the best comment, by that woman I-AM-THE-FUTURE and you are killing it with Pell Grant cuts.
That is what we need to hear way more of when goopers talk about dumping debt on our children and grandchildren.
Is it better for them to not go to college, to graduate school, to see their parents unemployed and despondent, to lose their health care.
That is what kills the future and hurts them far worse than borrowing money to fund stimulus when money for the us govt is almost at no interest.
put america to work now.
That’s Great one thing about repugs you don’t to make anything up. WTF
My FIL is just like this.
If you point it out to him, all you hear is, “It’s different.” And then his slurs come out in comments like, “I am willing to work hard. Others are not.”
Mr. klynn and I have selected to limit conversation.
Yet another hypocrtical teabagger with a massive sense of self-entitlement and a giant sucking double standard that says: 2 for ME & None for you??? Color me utterly unsurprised.
If you point out this FACTUAL Reality to Tea Partiers, they’ll just cover their ears and go: lalalalalalalalalalalalala can’t heeeaaarrrr you!!!! As long as some Teabagger SAYS the meliflous words they want to HEAR, then all is just fine & jim-dandy in Tebaggerlandia. Go figure! Almost every single one of these Teabagger pols, like Michele Bachmann & this Cravaak whore (apologies to hard working prostitutes everywhere), is deeply sucking at the govt tittie.
Is he collecting $92,000 year from SSDI? That seems high, even if his previous job paid well. I believe you are only allowed to earn about $14,000 over and above SSDI benefits, but maybe that rule is only for us peons.
” Cravaack’s earned income for fiscal year 2010 topped out at $92,273; the cash comes in the form of disability payments for sleep apnea, which ended his flying career with Northwest Airlines, now Delta Airlines, in 2007.”
So this fellow does not get SSDI because sleep apnea does not meet SSDI rules for total disability preventing getting a job. He had a great contract with his company and retired at a young age at great pay.
Great experience from which to judge the needs of those that do go on SSDI /s
Meanwhile as to the post topic – SSDI will reduce benefits – not stop – not end – if income is less than payout. The usual method is to adjust the payroll tax allocation so SSDI gets more and SS retirement gets less and the payroll tax stays the same, but the game with the Tea Party is to use “going broke” as an excuse to move SS – all benefits under SS of any type – to welfare.
Before SS all states but one had poor houses and workhouses –
the GOP wants us to return to that wonderful world/s
Sleep apnea is completely treatable, and a person can be returned to full function with the use of an easily available device. I don’t understand this at all. This guy must have had a hell of a disability lawyer.
Well said
Too bad
