Yesterday Jane and Scarecrow of FDL along with friends like Lt Dan Choi and Bill McKibben were arrested in front of the White House calling on President Obama to block the tar sands pipeline planned by Keystone XL. We wanted to share a bit of information on civil disobedience and how you can join this action too.
Civil disobedience is a powerful way to deliver a very clear message to those in authority — and it’s in the message, not the arrest, that your action has power. The strength of your message and of your commitment to delivering it is your intention to speak that message even if those in power arrest you for it, your choice to back up your message with your body and your freedom.
The Keystone XL Pipeline plan continues the destruction caused by the oil sands development to indigenous lands and threatens to push us irrevocably global warming damage:
As the climatologist Jim Hansen (one of the signatories to this letter) explained, if we have any chance of getting back to a stable climate “the principal requirement is that coal emissions must be phased out by 2030 and unconventional fossil fuels, such as tar sands, must be left in the ground.” In other words, he added, “if the tar sands are thrown into the mix it is essentially game over.”
President Obama has the ability to stop this pipeline — and we have the ability to make it clear that we expect him to do just that.
Tar Sands Action are organizing the sit-ins – a series of actions from August 20th to September 3rd. Here’s how they describe the plans:
The current plan is to commit a simple, sit-in style action at The White House fences, where there is a statute that restricts such activities. This action will be repeated daily as people come into town, keeping this sustained pressure on the issues. We expect people to remain civil and peaceful, acting in a dignified manner that is as serious as these issues are.
While arrests are a potential outcome from this action – being arrested is not the goal: Our intent is to send a message that these issues are so urgent and serious that we will escalate our pressure and commitment to make sure that the Keystone XL Pipeline is not approved. If that involves risking arrest, we are prepared and willing to take that risk and deal with the consequences. We believe that the risks of inaction are far greater than the risks of taking action.
To participate, you should plan to be in DC for three consecutive days – one for travel and training, one for the action, and one for any potential legal issues. When you sign up, please indicate which days you plan to be in DC, so that we know how many people to expect for our training sessions. Sign up here.
The organizers also have some initial legal information for participants – and if you are planning to join these actions, you should plan to attend the evening training scheduled for the night before your sit-in date. You can read the legal background here – and check the training schedule here. Click here for a full legal memo and FAQs.
As we saw yesterday, the usual practice of releasing arrestees for sit-ins is no longer SOP. In fact, the police have made it clear that they are using jail time to try to discourage people from participating in the rest of these actions – a choice sadly ironic as the capital prepares to commemorate Martin Luther King with the dedication of the MLK Memorial on the National Mall on August 28th.

About Firedoglake
In February 131 people were arrested at the White House under the same circumstances (Veterans against the war and supporters). We were taken away by the park police in buses to a warehouse-type facility way outside of DC. After about a forty-five minutes to an hour, during which time we were told to “shut up” every time we started to sing or chant to keep our spirits up, we were processed one by one. We were charged with “failure to obey a lawful order” and told we had the alternative of paying $100 for our Get Out of Jail Free card or stay and be jailed overnight and then given a date to appear in court to answer the charges. I needed to get home, so I paid the $100, and that was it. The only consequence was a major hassle getting my visa to work in Canada this fall. Has the policy changed as you suggest?
I’m curious. It sounds like the $100 fine option, no longer exists from what you say. Is that true?
Oops. Just read Kevin’s piece below and he answered my question. Police state tactics in an evolving police state. This is outrageous.
Yep, Where have all the flowers gone?….This looks like scary stuff.
Doesn’t this remind you of all the other times that Nobel Peace Prize winners
have cracked down on civil disobedience once they’ve gotten the trip to Oslo out of the way?
This makes me crazy. That WH belongs to us, along with the sidewalk in front of it. We are either a free people or we’re not. And we can’t let the MOTU decide that we’re not.
Anytime you do civil disobedience, you place yourself at risk and there are never guarantees as to how the PTB will chose to act. What’s clear is that the administration finds this particular set of sit-ins particularly threatening so they are hoping to shut it down.
The no guarantee is a key part of what CD is always about – you feel strong enough in your message that you’ll do whatever it takes.
I should mention that I used to train affinity groups and train trainers for nonviolent CD as well as part of the anti-Trident movement. We quickly learned that situations can change from moment to moment … preparation, strong affinity groups and good support teams really matter!
Obama’s effort at triangulation has totally failed.
His effort to paint those among his base who’re angry as “Lefties” is just a non-starter.
Moderates who supported him in 2008 know that he’s been unwilling or unable to fight for their interests.
Let’s just remember when the next Republican takes office in Jan 2012 that the real fight will be with the Democratic Party.
I’m out. Got home late last night. They decided to release the local people and keep those from out of town, so Scarecrow and Dan Choi are still in.
I’ll have more soon. Yes, they lied to us over and over again. As CarolynC said above, what happened was contrary to what happened to both the Bradley Manning protesters in March and the war protesters last December.
When we got out we were told by the 350 organizers that everyone else was being held in order to “discourage” others over the course of the next two weeks from doing likewise. The oil companies most certainly want that pipeline.
There’s a word for a government that uses authoritarian tactics against its own citizens on behalf of an industrial and business oligarcy. Can’t think of it at the moment, I’m sure it will come to me….
Hi Jane! And thank you. Sorry to hear that Scarecrow and Dan Choi are still there.
I hope you’ve got some interviews lined up for tomorrow!
Proud of all of you, Jane. Lots of words need to be written about this. Thanks for all you do.
We were tossing that word around a bit yesterday.
Hmmmm Jane – wonder what that word is ….
Jane, thanks for standing up and speaking to power.
I think the word you are looking for is Fascism but I am sure you know what the word is. I think the quicker we use that word the more people will know what is happening. Thanks Jane for all you do. I wish I was locked up with you and the others. I am there in spirit.
Ah, yes; the dreaded “F” word. Once again, thanks Jane. You’re still one of my heroes.
Applause for your patriotism and humanity in the face of the ignorance which has grown to the extent that it is safe to say it has become a very real threat to the entire web of life on our tiny planet .
You and those who stand with you are the only hope for the earth’s future . You represent the next stage of evolution for humanity if we are to survive as a species .
Thank you .
Jane,
Were the people let out last night in fact all the locals? That doesn’t make sense to me. What do you make of that decision? Since holding people overnight Does Not deter others from protesting, what difference does it make?
PS – I was thinking this morning that you, Dan et all are more “free” in jail than most people on the outside are.
What a relief to see your fonts!
It’s crazy how much you can care about people that you’ve come to know over time through the internet and consider to be friends, but I literally slept like total crap last night thinking about you and Scarecrow and Dan in jail.
Bill McKibben passed along this quote from jail to fellow organizers:
Jane talks the talk and better yet, she walks the WALK!
I wish all these Dems that spout the words would get their butts to DC to stand with her, Dan, Scarecrow and all the others. They have money. Oh yeah, Avarosis is a Firebagger now. He should be there as well.
Anyone heard how the Oct 6th action is coming along ? How many have signed on ?
Unless civil disobedience reaches a critical threshold in numbers which actually closes down the machinery of the status quo I do not believe anything else will ultimately be more than symbolic and will in the end prove inadequate in preventing our demise .
The “next Republican” won’t take office until Jan 2013
ironic as hell that the one person who has taught me to lay off personalities and hero worship . . .
. . . is my hero
Bless you sister !
Jane!
I want you to know that the Coporate attire that both you and Dan wore did not escape my view. Awesome! Protest the corporatists in their own UNIFORMS!
You, Go, GIRL!
Firebaggers go first class!
anyone have a link to any Live Stream/Blog/Tweets on today’s actions ?
thanks
Jane, you all rocked and so did your film footage (FDL UStream Channel) and interviews! Thank you to you all!
This was carried by local independent media in Portland, OR:
“70 People Arrested in Opening Day of Tar Sands Action” (Portland Independent Media Center, Aug. 20, 2011; see click-thru to FDL UStream video of the Tar Sands White House Protest)
Here’s what happened at the Safeway in Southwest section of the city’s downtown:

Ha! Yeah and it is a good lesson on those having such big issues with Dan protesting in military Uniform. I’m telling ya, Twain. You want to get noticed? Wear the uniform of the elites and powerful.
A: Screw with peoples travel plans and connections.
Hero, a leader a Humanist, I salute you Jane.
I can’t say demi. We were all being held in four 6 x 8 holding cells (we measured) with a toilet at the end, so that was about 14 women to a room. (Some of the men were held in the sally port because of the overcrowding, but there were more men than women.) So we got to know everyone pretty well over the course of being there. And I can tell you that the ones I was released with were all local. I can’t say how many were released total, I heard 10-15, and I think I saw about 8 myself.
I don’t look back on yesterday as being a negative experience. I had an amazing time with a fabulous group of women. They are all just so committed and most of them came from far away to take part in this action. I asked them all to come blog about it on FDL so I hope that they do.
I don’t but yesterday’s is up and can be linked on the top of the screen. (Firedoglake TV)
the MLK site is another good site for a protest. what better place to honor his ideals
Yes. Many people were worried because they have jobs and families to get back to. A few of the women had spouses or family members who were not happy that they had been arrested anyway, and they were very concerned. They also didn’t know where they were going to stay when they got out. As the men were arriving in the sally port at the park police station Dan and I were shouting to each other through the cyclone fence that everyone who needed a place to stay was welcome to stay with us.
Thank you tjbs, much appreciated.
You must have been like sardines. Was the toilet area screened?
Thank you, Jane, for doing what many of us were unable to do.
Keeping the out of towners locked up to discourage others will blow up in their face. They’ll overcrowd the jail, which in itself will make the news. When they start arresting hundreds each day, and this is only the second day, people will take notice.
There is no privacy in a holding cell.
I guess that is part of dehumanizing the occupants.
As Siun said CD takes planning. It’s not just a matter of “oh, goody, I’ll go get arrested and they’ll write me a ticket and let me go” any more.
Usually only stiffens the back of the occupants. Makes ‘em not fear gettin’ locked up again.
Dan was saying something along that line. He still said that there is always an element of fear, though, even if you have done this before.
LOL no. They took all our jackets and sweaters away which left a bunch of women in spaghetti straps, because they said they were worried we’d hang ourselves. Then they cranked up the air conditioning so everyone was really cold.
We asked for something warm for them so they brought us these 3 yellow styrofoam sheets. They said that was all they had. So we ripped them in two and rotated them with 2 women sharing them at a time, but when someone had to pee, we all turned our backs and used the sheets as sort of a wall so they’d feel some privacy.
One woman had to take a dump and she just really did not want to do that in there. She asked the guard if he’d let her do it in the restroom down the hall. He wouldn’t. So I asked if she could go join some of the men who were being held in the sally port where there was a porta potty, or if we could be taken there while she used the one in the cell, but he refused. We all said we didn’t care if she did what she needed to do, but she was so uncomfortable she just couldn’t.
The guards were actually very nice to us and we appreciated that. But they had their orders, and their orders were to lie to us and humiliate us. We all made the best of it.
As time wore on someone suggested we tell celebrity encounter stories, so I did something I almost never do — I told them. What the hell. They made everyone laugh.
DeeCee jail provides the made-in-Germany Sham Wows to the incarcerated? { LOL/ *snort*/ shaking head } The petroleum industry strikes again even in a jail cell.
You are amazing. You got BradleyManninged. Not to make light of either situation.
Okay, off to write my post now. I just passed out last night and got up today and thought “where do I start?”
Decided to go into Siun’s comments and just answer the questions people wanted to ask, then use that for the basis of the post.
Thanks as always everyone. The knowledge that FDL folks were with us in spirit and experiencing it with us on the livestream yesterday meant the world to Dan, Scarecrow and I as we were being arrested. We are all so proud to represent this community.
PS We were getting ourselves pumped up yesterday morning before the sit-in listening to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwttKbqk8WQ
Thanks to FDL for covering this. And thanks to Jane, Dan, Scarecrow, and everyone else who sacrificed their time and freedom to get arrested. And thank you Jane for the live video! It was great to be able to see the protest happening live. Gave me the first sense of optimism that I’ve felt in a long time.
Also, CREDO’s activism.
(((CONVICTS!)))
Heh, we used Steppenwolf’s Monster album.
Jane, you wrote:
I heard the stories of the incarcerated who survived ChineseG prison camps. Chinese people had to work inside these places and didn’t want to be there. It humiliates those who tell the lies for such purposes, not those upon whose ears the false words fall.
You all done good!
“Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me ’round“- Sweet Honey In The Rock
Typo. thanks for the correction.
Congratulations! You made “PHOTO OF THE DAY”(protesters in front of white house) in our local paper here in SW Mich.. Thank you all for your bravery.
Oh send a link!
The universe loves courage. Thanks ya’ll. The sleeping giant is awakening(us).
We are on the cusp of great change for the better.
Believe this or not..the square root of 1 percent of the world population can change and influence all. That is 8000 plus people. Carry peace in your heart as a fait acompli. Don’t ask for it walk in it.
im lakesh
Lots of visibility to the issues now …
From “RAW VIDEO: White House Protest Arrests” (NBC, Aug. 21, 2011):
Some Tar Sands Protest Coverage
Fascism has been tossed all around and I think it is becoming like some other words do, in that people become defensive at a word that they truly don’t know the real definition of. I don’t think the republican base is listening or really knows what the word means. It sounds so negative that they just jump in against it immediately, just joining with their group in solidarity for the sake of solidarity.
We all have to beware of who we follow in politics as in anything else and as we clearly see that the Republican leadership has so mesmerized their base that these people are able to ignore the most blatant evidence against their own intelligence and logic. In my whole life I never thought I would see such a circus show going on by people elected by us, who some are probably very ignorant/under-educated and have no business representing anyone at the highest level of government and those that are just pretending to be ignorant.
We need a different word or words to describe what the real danger is to our country by these “leaders” and their insane ideas. Their followers believe that they are trying to put America back on track when the reality is that they want to do away with the America that our founders created.
Maybe that is the “sentence” we need to use before we tell them it is fascism?
Also worried about Freedom Plaza occupation and what the law is going to do to people there.
So proud to support all of you here with my Solidarity in words and action when ever I can.
Sincerely,
Cathy
Thanks Cathy I guess in my reading the past year it is all too apparent to me that it is Fascism. Maybe I shouldn’t use the word as you say however after reading “The Nazi Hydra in America” I have come to understand what the meaning of the word is. I have come to learn that over 300 corporations, members of congress and even a president supported the Nazi’s during world war II. I am sure that many people here have not read that history of the United States. It is a scary account of our history that will never be taught in our schools. I guess I am one to state things as I see them and am really concerned about what is going on now in our country as everyone here is. I hope that we don’t wake up and it is too late to do anything about it. Thanks again for your response and I do take your words to heart.
