Hasn’t America suffered enough under ambitious Texas governors who were cheerleaders and (probably) dressed up in jackboots? Didn’t this country pay our dues under the yoke of pretend cowboys who like executing people?
Wasn’t Karla Faye Tucker shame enough for America in one lifetime?
Perry has flaws, huge flaws. Not the least of which is that he presided over the execution of one of his constituents, Cameron Todd Willingham, who was probably innocent. But I’m not sure that’s a liability in today’s Tea Party–obsessed GOP. There’s a legend in Lone Star politics that one of Perry’s Republican rivals in Texas tested the Willingham issue in a focus group. One Republican man, the story goes, squinted and said, “Well, I like that. Takes a lot of balls to execute an innocent man.” At that moment, folks say, Perry’s rival knew opposing him was fruitless.

Yeah, I’m aware of Bush doing that, I just wasn’t aware of Carlson’s connection with it. Of course I knew it was bullshit right away. Karla never plead for her life. She expressed remorse and reform but she went into the death chamber with her head held high. The last time I visited her she was quite cheerful.

I knew Karla from the first grade. I used to be in business with her first husband, (after she was jailed but before she was executed). I knew Jerry Dean, though I didn’t know her other victim or Karla’s second husband because they got together after I joined the navy. I’m still in touch with her foster daughter and her first husband of course and it is out of respect for them that I don’t write a diary. Karla was a junkie and a prostitute at times and had a foul temper but Jerry Dean was a snake and when I heard he had been killed but before I knew who’d been accused, I expressed surprise that somebody hadn’t killed him before. One thing Karla wasn’t was a coward.

Don’t know the numbers, but it is a big chunk of them. In most cultures (including our own until fairly recently) it is primarily an economic arrangement for raising children.

*heh* As a Historian, I do know that the entire European Powers’ many marriages were mostly political in nature too, naturally, much inbreeding occurred along the way…! ;-)
Alliance formation (economic or political) is a primary factor in all arranged marriages. Inbreeding is actually pretty common around the world and not really the kind of problem most people think unless the family is carrying some deleterious gene(s). In the early 20th century, there were villages of several hundred people in England (and elsewhere in Europe) where there were only 4-5 surnames because of it.

Hate to say it, but I think he’s going to be the Republican presidential candidate and if Obama follows Plouffe’s direction in what to (not) do about jobs and the economy until the presidential election, will likely end up being the next president. Maintain a shitty economy with high unemployment your entire term and show passive interest in solving it and you’re asking for trouble, even if much of his base understands the other option is even worse. The problem is the rest of America (not saying the rest of America leans right, believe the opposite is true when it comes to specific issues). Obama may forget he barely won even with larger than normal turnouts from the demographic groups that analysts believe lean left, but often don’t vote (why is that??), after 8 years of crap under Bush.
Perry is already running touting that Texas, under his governance, has provided 40% of the jobs in this economy. What can Obama argue? “Hey, it could have been worse if I didn’t do this. Be thankful for the shitty state it’s in now. Oh, and the free trade deals and patent laws are really going to bring in the jobs in a few years. Trust me.”
You have 2 candidates running with Republican job solutions and one with apparently a believable positive record, one with 4 years of a shitty economy, who do you think the moderate Republicans and few fence-sitting independents are going to vote for (those that Plouffe/Obama are chasing after now)? The people who helped push Obama over the top in the last election are not going to be as enthused to vote for him now, no matter how much Democrats try to scare them.

I think you’re probably right. Win-win either way for them. Either we end up with a Trojan horse DINO again, able to easily push through all sorts of Republican policies because the American “left” becomes passive when a president with D next to their name is in power, or they get an outright Republican with nutty social beliefs, but who they can probably whip into shape enough to not totally destroy the economy (because even the rich can lose if they let a nut-ball wreck the economy to the point it affects them negatively).
Where does Jeb come in? I think it’s a bit too late and haven’t heard a word about him. I figured he’d be the 2016 candidate assuming this election went to Obama.

I think Perry trumps Jeb for the establishment anyway. Maybe Jeb seems a bit more sane, but he carries the baggage of his brother that is still fresh in the public’s mind. Perry has pretty much all they need: Texas, corporate, religious fanatic, no empathy for Others, white male, strong persona, last name is not Bush.

It’s nice to fantasize, but Damon has not expressed any interest in this. Moore just threw his name out because that’s what he wished. If there was anyone with a chance to both beat Obama and win back public support from those likely to abandon Obama, it’d have to be a very popular, will liked trust worthy person who holds credible differences in policy positions. I think he’d have a better chance than Sanders at winning, though Sanders would be treated more fairly by the Serious People (who love bashing left leaning celebrities but are fine with right leaning ones).

I was thinking the pix and the post title stood alone, with very little text. But then I stumbled upon Paul Begala’s story at The Tina Brown Beast, and could not pass it up. Paul’s connected enough in the TX political consultant community that “Takes a lot of balls….” is likely true.
