well, it is well past oh dark thirty where you are :) i try to put up a wide variety of music and know that every song is not going to appeal to everyone.
she’s doing well — i have a picture i put up over at my blog that was taken on her 4 month birthday. she’s estimated at 15 lbs now per jen (based on the home scale)
she looks so much like her mom, right down to the thumbsucking (she recently discovered her thumb). being around a baby again has reminded me of how good that innocent trust is and i’m looking forward to being reminded just how wonderful things are when viewed through a child’s eyes.
Don’t think this is 1936. There is a short film called “Swing It” on youtube that is clearly Prima in 1936. This looks more like ’56 – clothes hairstyles etc. I feel better having pointed this out to my good friends at FDL. I don’t think I could have slept.
hey m smith — i went by the utube description and then verified that the song and footage was from the short film swing it from 1936. the link to the film in the post shows what i used for that confirmation.
if you find a link that verifies it is from the 50′s, i’ll edit my post to correct the error.
Why is Israel building settlements that Israelis can’t afford?
My wild-assed guess would be that they are playing every possible card to solidify defacto ownership. Someone will wind up living there-and the more settlements, the more development, the more presence Israel has there, the more it is theirs, in fact even if not in name. YMMV.
Muggy and humid beyond belief-I tried to stay outside to watch the Perseid meteor shower (I do every year), but with the recent rains, the clouds of mosquitos are simply vicious, and treat Deep Woods Off like a party drug. I did get to see the big one that lit up the sky from Tampa to Tallahassee, though. Way cool.
I start as a TA in the USF History dept in a few weeks. I;m currently doing prep for my supervisor-he’s a brilliant historian, and a rock star in the military history world, but is a tech dinosaur. So I’m doing multimedia stuff for his classes-and it’s not easy! He’s an Eastern Front specialist, and I don’t speak Russian, or Hungarian, or Romanian, or Polish-and that is what most of the sources are in for WW1 Eastern front! I can puzzle out most of the German, but too slowly to be especially helpful.
i’m not missing the hot at all – i carry my own personal summer around and don’t need extra so i’m trying to limit my complaining about only having 4 days in a row of sunshine so far this summer
I’ve had good results with Google translator and Spanish when I was teaching high school, but translating between Russian in the Cyrillic alphabet and English, I don’t know…and it seems to not know what to do with some of those eastern european words that have six consonants in a row…then when it does work, I find out it’s not the document I need. Sigh. I WILL do this.
Jeebus. I just heard Roger Mudd (I think) on the History Channel, make three errors of fact in a thirty second intro. That kind of thing drives me crazy.
Well , nothing, cuz no one’s ever tried to do this for him. Trying to distinguish myself..So far, I’ve put together three Powerpoints, with three animated maps, and a two-hour movie.
Yep. That’s the idea. Working for this guy could make a career, even at my age. He’s hosting a big conference in January, and there are PhDs from all over trying to get in…and, because I am his student, I’m in, with my measly little BA. I’ll be presenting a paper on the covert operations in Iran and Chile.
There’s a chill in the air here. Feels like it should be fall, but it’s only a temporary let up in the summer heat I think. Makes me want apple crisp in the oven.
The Revisionist Channel…! I swear it’s been using all the newly approved Texan history textbooks…!
It’s not even revisionism. Just silly mistakes…Stalingrad was NOT the target of Operation Barbarossa; von Paulus was not the commander of Barbarossa; and he was not a defector! He was captured, and surrendered, after presiding over the deadliest battle in human history.
One of the exercises I gave my HS students was putting together a video with errors and having them spot the mistakes.
its started to be a wee bit chillier at night this week – dipping down into the low 50′s. last night, i was glad i still had a blanket at the foot of the bed because just a sheet wasn’t cutting it.
I think so, but evolving is never easy. He’s great-a gleefully cynical, sarcastic old dude that views most of the beauracracy, and even some of his colleagues with amused contempt…so we get along well.
You know it, dude. I turned my back on an opportunity like this in 1988…and I have kicked myself ever since. Ron does not walk away from once in a lifetime opportunities any more.
Hello, LP fans. This vid clip is from the short musical movie “Hey Boy, Hey Girl” from 1959 (see IMDB http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0052887/). Prima charted with the single, “Lazy River” in May 1959, reached #37. Go back to youtube and look at the “Lazy River” and “Hey Boy, Hey Girl” clips – they shot on the same set. And there is no way this could have been done in 1930′s – every thing is wrong: clothes, hair, movement/presentation, audience reaction, signage, to say the least. But it is a fact that Louis was performing professionally in the 1930′s. To say that he was a character and an “act” is not perjorative. Listen to some of his live recordings, he and the band could really rock an audience. [I just love “Angelina – Zooma Zooma” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIJzpdJIdmI
It is Mudd narrating that mess on the History Channel…sad. The program is part of the History Alive! series, so that figures. When I was teaching HS, I point-blank refused to use HA because there were so many mistakes in the book. Dept. head was pissed-I had to create my own curriculum from the ground up if I didn’t want to use that supplied.
You are welcome. I had too much coffee this afternoon, so I’m awake, gnashing my teeth over the political theater that just does not seem to want to quit. (Which is not good for my sleep habits, my nerves, or my teeth.) So when I saw a post with Louis Prima, I just had to give it a click.
First!!!
hey tuez! how ya doing tonight?
I’m great. Et tu?
Okay, i have to say it that song is rather lame.
i’m doing ok thanks. tis from 1936 and music has changed since then. bobby darin did a cover of it that was very popular
Don’t mind me, I’m the first to admit some old music works for me, but most doesn’t, unless it’s the blues.
Hell, I don’t even like the Beatles, except individually.
Maybe I’m just cranky.
Aloha, Suz and tuez…! ;-)
How’s the little jujube?
well, it is well past oh dark thirty where you are :) i try to put up a wide variety of music and know that every song is not going to appeal to everyone.
aloha tut — how’s paradise tonight?
she’s doing well — i have a picture i put up over at my blog that was taken on her 4 month birthday. she’s estimated at 15 lbs now per jen (based on the home scale)
Hi tut.
I just took a quick look at your recent diary. Why is Israel building settlements that Israelis can’t afford?
It was dreary from Sunup til Sundown…! 8-(
I almost stayed in bed til Noon, because it was so gloomy…! Actually, I brewed me my first cup of joe at 10…!
louis armstrong’s version
Great question…! I wish I knew the answer to it…! ;-)
What a sweetie.
To be that trusting again….
i do that every time its gloomy myself dood. sometimes, ya just gotta pamper yourself.
she looks so much like her mom, right down to the thumbsucking (she recently discovered her thumb). being around a baby again has reminded me of how good that innocent trust is and i’m looking forward to being reminded just how wonderful things are when viewed through a child’s eyes.

‘evenin’, Suzanne-
dug the video…Tony Bennet owes his entire stage persona to this guy, doesn’t he?

how ya doing tonight?
hey rond — how’s the great swamp tonight?
My wild-assed guess would be that they are playing every possible card to solidify defacto ownership. Someone will wind up living there-and the more settlements, the more development, the more presence Israel has there, the more it is theirs, in fact even if not in name. YMMV.
You know, if the Israeli protesters and the American progressives could team up…
I agree. Especially since very few people in this country know there is trouble in Israel.
Way cool.

Just imagine if 15% of the US had just decided to pitch a tent on the National Mall…? ;-)

its been very mild up here. had sunshine the past couple of days but there are clouds and showers forecast for this weekend
am hanging in and hanging on :) token’s snoozing at my feet and baiey cat is curled up blending in with the shadows on ‘her’ chair
et merci beaucoup pour Louis!
Armstrong
Good for you. Challenges…
East coast is wishing for what the west coast has.
merci beaucoup
i’m not missing the hot at all – i carry my own personal summer around and don’t need extra so i’m trying to limit my complaining about only having 4 days in a row of sunshine so far this summer
That’s what I keep telling myself. A chance to work for this guy is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I intensely want to do well.
are any of the resources online where you can use alta vista or similar to translate for ya?
la vie en rose
I’ve had good results with Google translator and Spanish when I was teaching high school, but translating between Russian in the Cyrillic alphabet and English, I don’t know…and it seems to not know what to do with some of those eastern european words that have six consonants in a row…then when it does work, I find out it’s not the document I need. i love their voices together – so smooth
oh yuck. fingers and toes crossed ya find something that works. what did his previous ta use?
Could somebody tell me if Haaretz is down completely, or if it’s just my ISP…? 8-(
Jeebus. I just heard Roger Mudd (I think) on the History Channel, make three errors of fact in a thirty second intro. That kind of thing drives me crazy.
more tony
history channel has gotten horrible.. it should be called the history-ish channel
Rawk on, Bro…! I’m partial to the Asian/Pacific histories myself…! ;-)
Interesting, Suzzz — the old hotel redevelopment project on Beach St in Santa Cruz was shot down by the Coastal Commission.
Well , nothing, cuz no one’s ever tried to do this for him. Trying to distinguish myself..So far, I’ve put together three Powerpoints, with three animated maps, and a two-hour movie.
because of narrow roadway? or am i thinking of another proposed development on the west cliffs…
dood, if you are successful, wow what a feather in your cap!
The Revisionist Channel…! I swear it’s been using all the newly approved Texan history textbooks…!
Last week Tony turned 85 — he’s older than Emmylou Harris!
makes me wonder who owns them… betcha they are r’s
Yep. That’s the idea. Working for this guy could make a career, even at my age. not many of his compatriots around… he’s outlived most of them – i think performing keeps him young — kinda like mick and the stones.
Here’s the previous local TV link, Suzzz.
http://www.ksbw.com/video/28842008/detail.html
However, Coastal Commission shot down the project.
et plus
hot dayam!
CT, it’s down for me, too.
wow, that’s gorgeous
Yeah. Me, presenting a paper to a room full of PhDs who are pissed because they couldn’t present. No pressure.
hey margot — how’s ohio tonight?
remember when it was called The Hitlery Channel? (when that’s all it showed)
That’s really exciting!
easy peasy dood. i have total faith that you are gonna wow them
There’s a chill in the air here. Feels like it should be fall, but it’s only a temporary let up in the summer heat I think. Makes me want apple crisp in the oven.

Ever read Kafka’s A Report For An Academy?
its started to be a wee bit chillier at night this week – dipping down into the low 50′s. last night, i was glad i still had a blanket at the foot of the bed because just a sheet wasn’t cutting it.
Mahalo, Margot…! I wonder if Anonymous or even the Mossad knocked’em off the net…?
No…but no Kafka could be more surreal than what goes on in most classrooms. what’s the gist of it?
The Mossadegh and Allende eras…? ;-)
Thanks…it is! The paper is already written, so I just have to edit for length.
hiya CT, margot
You got it. Colonialism by any other name would smell just as foul.
nothing on twitter by annon about it — they are usually the first to brag about their exploits
Aloha, PPD…!
The Wikigist…
Wow! Good for you, Ron.
Thanks, you. It has been a LOOOONNNGG road.
what a long strange trip its been
And just remember, this brilliant professor chose *you* so you have what it takes, no?
the Wikigist of Kafka’s In The Penal Colony
I think so, but evolving is never easy. He’s great-a gleefully cynical, sarcastic old dude that views most of the beauracracy, and even some of his colleagues with amused contempt…so we get along well.
congrats on snagging the happy lucky 100 rond!!!
Great point, Margot…! Carpe Diem, Ron…! ;-)
Thank you, thank you! (bows). I’ll be here all week-try the veal.
round of applause
that reminds me, I have to get a bumper sticker that says Carpe Manana…
You know it, dude. I turned my back on an opportunity like this in 1988…and I have kicked myself ever since. Ron does not walk away from once in a lifetime opportunities any more.

Aloha, Dood…! ;-)
