Pictured: a bunch of lucky duckies escape the cruelty of Africa.
From Ryan Lizza’s must-read Bachmann profile in the New Yorker.
While looking over Bachmann’s State Senate campaign Web site, I stumbled upon a list of book recommendations. The third book on the list, which appeared just before the Declaration of Independence and George Washington’s Farewell Address, is a 1997 biography of Robert E. Lee by J. Steven Wilkins.
Wilkins is the leading proponent of the theory that the South was an orthodox Christian nation unjustly attacked by the godless North. This revisionist take on the Civil War, known as the “theological war” thesis, had little resonance outside a small group of Southern historians until the mid-twentieth century, when Rushdoony and others began to popularize it in evangelical circles. In the book, Wilkins condemns “the radical abolitionists of New England” and writes that “most southerners strove to treat their slaves with respect and provide them with a sufficiency of goods for a comfortable, though—by modern standards—spare existence.”
African slaves brought to America, he argues, were essentially lucky: “Africa, like any other pagan country, was permeated by the cruelty and barbarism typical of unbelieving cultures.” [...]
In his chapter on race relations in the antebellum South, Wilkins writes: “Slavery, as it operated in the pervasively Christian society which was the old South, was not an adversarial relationship founded upon racial animosity.”
This book was on her website for three years under “Michele’s Must Read List.” The author, J. Steven Wilkins, was a board member of the League of the South, a Neo-Confederate hate group.
Just more proof that this woman is cuckoo-for-cocoa-puffs crazy, and the fact that she’s giving Willard a run for his money tells you everything you need to know about the state of the Republican Party.

Oh, well, then, I guess it was okay to trade human beings as chattel after all.
Fuck Wilkins. And fuck Bachmann, too.
In my house, we call it cookoo-pants.
Did any of you see the new cover for Newsweek?
Not very flattering. Thanks Newsweek. No snark.
“Africa, like any other pagan country,…”
Sara Palin thought Africa was a country also.
Yes. As long as you treat your property respectfully, there is no harm in owning another person. Duh.
How does someone who values opinions like this get any credibility whatsoever?
Michele Bachmann is really offensive. She also has the IQ of a kumquat.
Thanks, BT, for adding one more bit to our knowledge for us.
Laugh all you want, but that woman has a very real shot at winning the next election. Not that it gives me any pleasure in saying that. The more her true beliefs are exposed the more it seems her popularity rises. She is well and truly crazy and detached from reality. Republicans have always loved their presidents to be as dumb as dirt and she certainly fits that description. This country will not survive the next 10 years. And I truly mean that. We are done.
Now how can people say there is a racial component to the tea party. I just dont see it.Is
Those eyes, they has the crazy! Stop staring at me, Crazy Mish!
Newsweek is getting a lot of flack about that Cover. Conservatives say it makes her look crazy. WOW! A picture that actually reflects what a person is. Of course, when Fox tries to portray the President’s birthday party as a black gangsta rap affair, it’s just Fox being unbiased.
It’s not simple cuckoo.
It’s still believed in many circles in the south. The Tea Party in the south is driven by southern white males with a sense of white Christian entitlement to gain from the labor of those they oppress. It has its roots firmly in the institution of black slavery in the south.
In Gainesville the site of the most recent KKK rally the central square has a statue dedicated by the Daughters of the Confederacy to “the principles for which they (the soldiers’ representative depicted) fought.
How was the article more ignoring Michelle’s Crazy and Hate, more ignoring she is on track to win the GOP Primary?
Or is the Corporate GOP finally deciding to take her down?
Speaking of dumb as dirt, we can only hope that noted scholar Rick Perry steps in to save us all…
To be fair the Bible does have a line about slaves obeying their masters. That line I think should be considered a Satanic Verse:)
Actually I was hoping Sarah Palin would save the day. I mean that.
What other books are on her list?
Only some of the reasons why I disagree with the commenter at #6.
It would take more than southern white male christians to get her into the WH.
Things@13: It should be considered a reflection of an ancient and in many ways less than praiseworthy culture. We can damned well do better, even if the likes of Bachmann and Wilkins can’t conceive of it.
I wish I had photo shop abilities, EDP. If not just for your sake. I’d put a large pair of dark sunglasses on her. If anyone has the hardcover magazine on their coffee table, may I suggest you get out a thick black marker.

The Northern Press did not cover this at the time but in the age of the internet Michelle can’t do things to stir up Racist Voters without us hearing about it. I bet NewsWeek never mentions it but we will.
And Newsweek wonders why they lose readers.:)
Newsweek…
Thank you for your great photo journalism…A picture is worth a thousand words.
Isn’t this the second time she has been on their cover?
I have an easier solution: I just don’t buy Newsgeek.
Sure, if you count the Crazy Women of the Big 10 spread…
If there is one consistent thread I have observed in wingnut “thinking” is that if somebody really riles the left then that alone is reason to vote for them. The more the left excoriates Bachman, legitimately so, the more she will gain the faith of the right. It has nothing to do with policy with them. To them it is just another fight to win. They truly could not care less about the consequences so long as they can say they won. You are dealing with voters who are very easily motivated to vote against their own interests. They would be ordered buy the rope (non union, Chinese made) used to hang themselves with and then praise capitalism as the trap door opens beneath their feet.
Me neither. I was just trying to have some fun.
I spent some time on the earlier thread about the Town Hall Webinair yesterday, and just needed to lighten myself up a bit.
Now that is creepy.
That is definetly one aspect of the whole picture. But, there are other forces involved.
I wasn’t trying to put you down, but I just don’t agree with you. K?
Was I being defensive? Shrug.
I think Perry will be the GOP candidate. Romney is a Mormon which doesn’t sit will with the evangelical base. Perry is a wet dream for those idiots. The others are either too crazy or not crazy enough. Perry will run on the “Texas miracle” of employment. Trying to paper over the fact that Texas has the worst or close to the worst record of any state on poverty and education.
On the plus side, he does have good hair. I forget, who was the last President we had who was a know nothing Texas governor with swagger who prayed a lot for guidance and how did that all turn out?
No, you’re weren’t at all. I was just trying to be perfectly clear. We’re good.
Tensions and emotions have been running a little high here lately. No surprise. At any earlier thread, someone called Jane a god damed bitch. I’m not kidding. I just wanted you to know that I can respect what you say without agreeing.
(((Firedoglake)))
Creepier when you consider that she looks like that in a lot of pictures. I don’t think Newsweak had to try too hard if they were trying to make Bachmann look like she might lunge at your neck.
True but it looks like it maybe enough to win the GOP Primary if Sarah or Perry don’t split the Hate vote.
The Tea baggers were losing popularity before SS and Medicare got cut Michelle is identified with the Tea Party I suspect that the deal to cut SS and Medicare the Tea Baggers are so happy about will further cut their support.
When we get those poll numbers Michelle’s poll numbers should drop more as details of the deal emerge.
Another president who couldn’t get a decent grade in an introductory economics class? Yeah, that may well be the swan song for the good old U S of A.
I have personal experience with how Rick Perry “created” those jobs. He bought them. I had two manufactuting clients move to Fort Worth in the last 4 years. In both instance they took advantage of a state run initiative which paid for the moving costs of all their employees interested in relocating as well as granting them a year long exemption from state taxes. Perry put Texas deep in the red and this was partially the reason. Of course he later lapped up 7 billion in stimulus money, the timing of which would not have been better for him.
The R candidate will be the person Karl Rove and the R PTB decide to crown. At this point I think either Perry or Mitt.
Wow. I’ve never been hugged by a web site. Must admit I liked it.
At least she either gets puff pieces or pooh poohed as a strong candidate who can’t win but Fundy GOPers are the majority in GOP primaries I think she can win the GOP Primary.
Unless of course older voters about to retire get over their hate and realize Michelle and friends stole their SS and Medicare in a sense this is an intelligence test for GOP voters.
In a Democracy the people are expected to vote their own interests if the Tea Baggers ignore this freakin obvious theft then we have to wonder if Democracy is a good idea idea.
Democracy can’t work if a stupid ( yes many are college educated but they are still stupid) minority but big enough to tilt elections can be manipulated to vote against their own interests .
Holy shit! I just looked at the picture. Very disturbing.
Thanks for the post BT.
Hello pups.
Yeah, just like in Nazi Germany where the subjugation of slavs and Jews into work camps (soon to be know as concentration camps) was not considered racial “animosity” but simply an efficient use of “inferior” races.
Sometimes I think that mint julep does more than contribute to multi-fingered hands and single digit IQs.
Our group hugs are the best!
I’m going to take off now, for a while. We’re pulling up the carpet in the living room. It’s noxious. It’s a health hazard. My favorite part is pulling out all the nails. Not. Ow. My wrist hurts from yesterday.
Well, the rebels always said at the end of hostilities that “the South would rise again.” The Neo-conferderate traitors have arrived and this time large swaths of the public are dumber than a box of rocks.
As I recall, these so called decent Southerners made a practice of selling off family members and breaking up families. This from the family values crowd.
At this point, I think almost any Republican could probably win. The GOP will shred Obama and he won’t fight back. He will continue to be above the fray with no message as always.
Let’s see, Texas has one of the worst records on education, poverty, and pollution. That’s the vision he has for the rest of the United States. Maybe, Obama will compromise and promise to bring that to only 80% of the country.
It’s not that the TeaPots are stupid as much as they are ignorant. The majority of them are “home schooled” and I’m assuming their “home school” teachers were not Harvard graduates. Those who are college educated went to “evangelical” schools like Liberty and the Pat Roberts college in VA. Their. Hatred of a Black man in “their” White House trumps everything else. That’s the engine that drives them. The same policies under Shrub had no such reaction.
They are not ignorant nor stupid. They are a sub-culture that has been a part of this nation since before the Revolution. One not of it may only notice the barest of ripple on the surface of the culture as a large bass makes on a pond. But it is there and it is powerful. They have a well developed narrative that through years of exclusion from the mainstream has developed a hard resistance to any modification. They have been losers for many generations and fear no opposition. In fact it makes them feel stronger.
Don’t underestimate Perry. He is grasping in my view the most common reason people of the right single out to vote for a person.. He is getting with God.
Did any of you see the new cover for Newsweek?
OMG – I think the craziness was leaking that day…
That has to be the most stupid cover I have seen since Gingrich as the grinch who stole christmas. Lordy. All it will do is inflame her followers more and embarrass the rest of us.
Don’t think I’ve ever seen a mixed racial crowd at a Tea Clan Convention. IMHO, Michele Bachmann seems to be doing the bidding of her preacher husband (who appears to have a non-Christian, low opinion of woman and mankind) because he seems repugnant and too unattractive to get out front himself. Is she then rewarded by him–by being allowed to get out of the house and to wear pants once in a while? How many conservative men hide behind the skirts of their women or wives and use the women to push their agendas? Faux? Seems like fascism and repression wraped in short skirts, cleavage and bleach blond hair with their words and fibs spoken savagely.
The Southern Strategy has always been around in one format or another, but was more or less made a permanent plank of the Republican agenda during the reign of Nixon. Nothing much has changed, except that the PTB have pushed racism out into the mainstream as never before in order to push voters to vote against their own interests.
Frankly, that’s “all” this is, as nasty, putrid & hateful as it is. It’s pumped out in order to fool T-GOPers to be *distracted* from the real issues; to vote against their own interests; and to then feel *insanely* vindicated for doing so.
BTW, though, there are some small segments of the Christian right who will never vote for a Bachmann or Palin. This is the group of fundies who truly believe (and vote according) that NO woman should hold office of any kind. None… no matter how “make-sexy-time” she appears, and no matter how offensive her viewpoints are to the left.
I doubt that Bachmann has any real chance at winning, but she will definitely be USED in the primary to fluff the base. That is her role: as a fluffer.
This crap is hateful. It’s drivel and should be excoriated as such by any rational, sane & compassionate human being. Beware of those who do not oppose it.
She has about as much chance of winning the WH as I do. Unless you factor in Diebold.
That is NOT a flattering cover.
Accurate? Representative?
“Let he who does not stare mindlessly with glassy eyes into the distance, cast the first stone.”
I didn’t know that Iowa, her birthplace, or Minneosta were “pro-slavery”.
She DOES look like that A LOT.
I agree 100%.
The Newspeak cover shows the same look she had the evening she grabbed Shrub, after he had delivered his SOTU speech, and gave him some tongue! *g*
Latest FaBlog: The Fox and his Hen
Or perhaps, in his greatest show of being truly bipartisan, Obama will dump JOe Biden and invited Rick Perry to run as his Veep in 2012.
How is this different then the feeling of anything proposed to this nation?
The book says that Southerners sought to give slaves a comfortable existence. How many weeks of fed vacation a year did slaves typically get?
