Final Senate bill: Aye 74, Nay 26.
EPI estimates that this bill could result in 1.8 million fewer jobs.
He climbed into the great chair and made himself as comfortable as he could. The microphone, already alive, was waiting for him: something that was the equivalent of a TV camera must be watching, but he could not locate it.
Beyond the desk and its meaningless instrument panels, the wide windows looked out into the starry night, across a valley sleeping beneath a gibbous moon, and to the distant range of mountains. A river wound along the valley, glittering here and there as the moonlight struck upon some patch of troubled water. It was all so peaceful. It might have been thus at Man’s birth as it was now at his ending.
Out there across unknown millions of kilometres of space, Karellen would be waiting. It was strange to think that the ship of the Overlords was racing away from Earth almost as swiftly as his signal could speed after it. Almost-but not quite. It would be a long chase, but his words would catch the Supervisor and he would have repaid the debt he owed. – Arthur C. Clarke, Childhood’s End
Thanks to everyone who joined in the watch parties, and who did what they could over the course of the past two and a half years to try and stop this from happening, even though they knew there was no hope. The record is there. I respect you tremendously.

Thank you Jane. Sometimes all we can do is fight until the bastard beat us. Then we get up and fight again.
*bows to Jane*
Would YOU consider a primary challenge to Obama?
Boxturtle (Can you imagine the squeal from the DNC if you did? :-) )
Thank you Jane.
Even if we cannot stop the destruction of our democracy, we can at least record for posterity that we tried.
“Right defeated is (still) stronger than evil triumphant.” MLKjr in letter from Birmingham Jail. Thanks for all your hard work on this Jane. You made them show their cards and their “hands”. Great work.
It was a good fight. We lost, but we will be back. Thank you for all you’ve done.
Regroup and bring it on.
Down with the dims who gave us this POS.
Jane, thank you for all that you’ve done.
Being Cassandra isn’t easy or fun.
Oh, now Reid is saying “it’s the system.”
I’m not one who lightly passes out praise, but I’d say thanks are due to everyone at FDL who has worked on making sense of the Obama Presidency. Today the United States decided to become much less civilized than it had been throughout much of the 20th century. One can learn how much of it happened at FDL.
Jane, you have been one of the few champions of the people in this battle but remember it’s just one battle, a big one granted, but others will follow and you will not stand alone. I salute your courage and perseverance.
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
Margaret Mead
I’m old and tired of fighting this battle, but I won’t quit. I can’t. Something good must be left for future generations. So I go on.
Matt Taibbi:
EPI estimates 1.8 million jobs lost in 2012 from their estimated minus 0.3% GDP loss. They see a .6% increase in the unemployment rate prediction for 2012, which would take unemployment from 8.3% to 8.9%.
JP Morgan analysts predict a minus 1.5% reduction in the GDP, or 5 times as much as EPI does.
So, it seems they see possibly 5.6 million jobs lost? Perhaps unemployment rate of 9.8%.
But I am an econ novice, so I might be way off. Morgan analysts didn’t predict job losses.
Durbin: For the first time in history we have averted default. WTF?
Schumer: “Averted” “averting” Jobs, jobs, jobs…
Talking point: Averted, Jobs
Okay, moving along..
For those of us of a “certain age” and who have never made much money, the age of austerity has been a constant in our adult lives. The economic axis began to tilt noticeably negative in the seventies and it’s been steadily down from then. My cousin and I were joking that we could give lessons to people newly arrived at the lower class and struggling to even make sense of their finances at that level. We know how to get by.
Thanks Twain, I think we all needed it.
Thanks Jane.
As you can well imagine, watching the fiasco go down ignited a shitstorm of activity among the Congressional Scorecard group. We have our regular Tuesday meeting tonight, and it’s going to be a doozy I think.
Jane, since the Health Care trek I have been saying the record you have shepherded here has been and will be important in creating a way for real change. We absolutely have to know and understand what is really happening or nothing can change. That and the value of what you are doing is only more true now and growing every day.
It’s really scary.
Jane, thank you for providing this incubator of action and freedom.
Like HCR, we lost this fight but there are many more waiting in the wings. To not care, to be silent, to not act are not options.
Never. Give. Up.
Austerity in a weak economy – what could possibly go wrong? With Democrats actively owning the underlying economic principles behind it, it will be hard to blame Republicans for the job losses.
1.8 million fewer jobs I guess Washington likes the ending to the French Revolution so much they decided to do a modern remake.
“The system” that he defends at every turn.
Hobo stew. Stone soup.
This morning we went to breakfast and a young gay man, whom we both like, remarked something like: “don’t the democrats get it, geez, they have to reduce this debt before it kills us.” I was too sad to comment.
His lips are moving.
Franchise it! Take it public! You could make a vast fortune and fly your private jet over the huddled masses and drop them little packs of peanuts.
Later today we’ll announce an FDL member town hall to discuss it.
Never give up.
And manipulates at every single turn (thanks, powwow) with arcane delight. Reid lurvs his system.
I expect to see recipe books coming out with titles like “How to Make Delicious Entres With Nothing More Than Grass”, “Nutritional Wood Pulp Recipes”, “Dumpster Diving is not Only Fun but Delicious.”
Why does barry continue to lie and say he is protecting seniors, and still expects the rich to pony up? When the cons say they will never allow it. barry is on teevee saying he wont allow the budget to be ballanced on the backs of those who can least afford it. He’s going to fight for it in the coming months… I don’t know whether to laugh or cry, who does this son of a bitch think we are?
Reid is the system.
The audacity of BS.
Eventually, a person has to come to grips with the fact that it just doesn’t make sense to keep fighting losing battles anymore. In light of that, I’ve had an epiphany and have just decided to become fabulously wealthy instead… That’s right, I’m joining “the dark side.” It was nice knowing you guys.
ps–Try not to kick me too hard when I’m on the way back down…
I’m still feeling sad that House Dems I saw savaging this bill on TV then went on to vote for it.
14 of the Dems who voted for it publicly opposed it. Sheesh.
Via Susie at Suburban Guerrilla linking to War Is A Crime (formerly AfterDowningStreet).
Kudos to Gillibrand for voting NO. Not that difficult to do since it passed by –what? –74 to 26, but still Brava!
This gruel from Obama on jobs is just pathetic. I think I am really going to be sick.
That is really, really good news Kelly. I’ll try to be there.
lol. ….that was a “reply” to comment 35.
Oh, yeah!
Cat food is not only economical, but nutritious too!
Who doesn’t “love” tuna?
Crackers make almost EVERYTHING more filling.
Likely, she was given permission to vote no to improve her re-election prospects.
Boxturtle (And she wasn’t the only “no” vote that would have flipped if Harry had needed it)
Thanks Jane. When I think back on the work you and your crew have done over the past several years, it boggles my mind. And though we’ve had our asses kicked pretty badly on this one, there is really no other option but to carry on the fight.
“Austerity, Fuck Yeah!”…
and when you wash it down with champagne it’s sublime.
Obama is establishing a talking point for the next election. He’s disavowing responsibility for what has just happened while laying out a PR campaign that will, in the end, produce little or nothing tangible for the “lesser people.” The time for him to fight for the “lesser people” has passed him by. It’s all talk now.
“A list of things I didn’t do anything about while I was threatening old people about not getting their Social Security checks while assuring bond investors that they’d be paid.”
#HowDoYouSpellHope
Jobs are overrated. Look how much free time you have when you don’t have one. No timecard to punch. Take off whenever you want. Go the the beach.
No, thank YOU, oh fearless leader.
Last night at work, I mentioned to a colleague what had happened in the House of Reprehensibles.
“Really?” he said. “That happened?”
The American people, in their inattentiveness, indifference and inactivity are getting exactly the government they deserve.
So, Alex Lawson gonna be available to try and get into these Catfood II meetings?
First one is supposed to be no later than 45 days from today, which makes that Monday September 19th.
Jane, If the Democrat Party wanted more jobs they have a funny way of showing it. While the party had unchecked power for 11 months before the election of Scott Brown, and the President announced a “Laser-Like” focus on jobs and promptly did nothing. Since that time the President and the Congress have done little if anything for jobs other than grow the size of Government. They have focused their attention on Growing Entitlements and strangling regulations, regulations that kill jobs. Just the other day we learned that Boston Scientific is moving 1,000 jobs off shore and that GE is moving their massive X-Ray division to China. These are direct results of Progressive legislation.
In General the Progressive movement has no one to blame but themselves….in the last few years 100′s of Billions have been wasted, and the bills passed (Obamacare, Dodd-Frank & Food Safety) are not the kind of Bills created to generate new jobs, rather they were created to enhance Government Control. I won’t even go into the energy sector. So please don’t grumble that this compromise…that BOTH sides of the aisle hate…. somehow chokes off 1.8 Million jobs, this administration has been killing off jobs for 2 1/2 years and shows no sign of stopping…and every single dollar wasted on Skyrocketing Debt is one more dollar plus interest that will be unavailable for social programs and job programs in the future…and how anyone supports that is a mystery to me.
Obama is on TV right now trying to put lipstick on this pig.
He says this bill will allow investment in education, research, etc.
Translation: Well I didn’t negotiate all the money that goes into these programs. At least not yet.
He is now going to fight for a shared sacrifice. Well we all know how well he fights for stuff like that.
Now he pushing for the trade agreements. Claiming that they will produce more jobs and increase our exports. Where have I heard that before? Since the Chamber of Commerce is pushing these things I can guarantee that this will further decimate the middle class.
No public signing ceremony for this POS. I wonder why. Guess they want to bury this as soon as possible.
This feels like a wake.
Barbara Boxrt is making some good point in her speech, right now.
Never give up! But time for a change of focus, I think. No more pretending that there is a democratic party that might listen.
Likely, she was given permission to vote no to improve her re-election prospects
I heard a reporter yesterday, can’t remember exactly who it was now but he was saying when the dims were meeting with pelosi they were discussing who would be allowed to vote against the bill.
And I have to add that I’m a bit concerned about the poor folks who will get fat eating my trail of crumbs…
So, let me see if I follow Obama here. He’s going to let all those who are hurting sit (and stew) for a month with some hopey happy talk about what he’s going to do. After all these past months. While the vote today will make things worse. While the politics will be the same now and forward. WTF?
It’s the August 2011 campaign speech. This is what his advisers are telling him? Just. Great.
What happens in September when this all starts again?
And what happens at home during August?
So unfortunately true.
Agreed. I hope he’s toast. I will not vote for any of them again. I already changed my registration yesterday.
Yes.
“Democracy” requires an engaged and informed public. Without it it’s nothing more than kabuki but then that’s what the political class counts on, a distracted, stressed, dumbed down, fearful, overworked and infantile electorate.
Exactly. It’s too late now to tell us this. Way too late.
When a few of us were crunching numbers around the dinner table (without the help of any macroecon comp models) this is the figure we came close to — ours was a bit bigger.
So here is what we have:
Jane, thank you so much for your courage, passion, morality, conscience, devotion, compassion. You are our spine, our moral guide, our magnet, and our irreplaceable inspiration. We stand up straighter and strengthen our resolve for your efforts. When I am exhausted and defeated, I come to you and your Firepups, take a deep breath, and try again to resist the onslaught and ignorance. I give credit to the great writers and thinkers who recognize the nature of the struggle and send out their smart and thoughtful messages to give us words and figures to stand our ground. Thanks to all of you.
Good news……remember Labor is the key to reorganizing and running new candidates. They have the money and man/women power to do this. If each states labor organizations would band together and run new candidates for working people, the elderly and poor, we could make a sweep in DC. And add Progressive groups to that,,,,,well it would be on contest.
Nothing more to see here, folks, everyone move along now. Gotta make room for those Job Creators so they can Work their Magic.
Signing party at the Birthday Party w/ Grover and friends.
Get educated about Congress FAIL. Get organized. Oh, all kinds of time for *productive* activities.
“Change you can believe in.”
I don’t think so. Obama: He ain’t no FDR, that’s for sure.
We all know the “liberal” media is doing a tremendous job of informing the people.
Hi, demi ~ it DOES feel like a wake, and I think I have food poisoning too.
“…political disempowerment.” Ya think? That’s the game here. You can win elections many ways. One way: keep them away from the polls.
Chaka Fattah on TV now trying to carry Obama’s water. Half the Congressional Black Caucus voted against this bill. Good for them. It shows some of them are waking up to what Obama really is. He certainly isn’t doing anything to help their constituency.
Makes you wonder how much bird shit has to fall on SOME people before they quit standing under the tree.
I was thinking, we ought to have our own blog?????
Last night, as I raged on throughout the day, I cruised the channels looking for an honest explanation of the sellout by Congress and incompetent President. I figured Lawrance O’ was wetting himself with glee on the outstanding results of good governance, so skipped over the Countdown w/KO. Keith was interviewing Emanuel Cleaver(he’s sure no Eldridge)of the Black Caucus. What a sad, demeaning explanation on capitulation. Next up was your friend and mine Markos Moulitsas of kos fame, explaining why there was no Democrat qualified to primary Obama, except maybe Gore or Howard Dean. The major problem he stated, was that Obama, being the first black President, would make anyone that successfully ran a primary against him look ungrateful and carry the stigma of defeating a black President for the rest of his life. What a sad water carrier.
I’m still searching for an honest explanation on why this shit sandwich tastes so good to Congress.
“pull us from the brink of “defia” default..”. Quote–Nancy Pelosi just now
These assholes were just on trying to convince everyone that they saved the working poor and the elderly from cuts to the big three. They know they are in deep shit. You wait until that Super Congress gets unleased on us.
Sure never mind what just happened here. It was all for the best./s
I think this bill is a governmental declaration of independence. No longer will it even pretend to serve the working class. In the new america only the owners are citizens worthy of governmental succor. The owners have so totally rigged the system that no matter who is elected, the working class is not served. Or even considered. We workers are essentially aliens now. Not exactly illegal, but in no way entitled to any share of the new american dream.
CNN Breaking: AAA rating confirmed (by one ratings agency)!!!!!!!! Woo Hoo!
Dow down because of super committee ….
#ohgod
Thank you, Jane.
Thank you, FirePups.
We fought, and will fight on. Which is far more than we can say of our erstwhile, nominal allies.
WA state residents: Jay Inslee voted “yea” yesterday. And he wants to be our next Governor. I’d like to go on record here:
F*ck you, Jay Inslee. With a dead porcupine.
Donating now…
FunnyDiva
not laughing today.
A link please to the vote? I want to know the names
Markos made me not want to see him for a good long while.
I think the “problem” was we didn’t define a time frame.
“I’m still searching for an honest explanation on why this shit sandwich tastes so good to Congress.”

- The Shit Sandwich Theory of Life
Obama and his export fantasies. Where are the goods we “export”, with the exception of cars and war toys, going to come from? Not from the good ol’ US of A. They’re made in China, Viet Nam, Mexico and Indonesia. So where are the jobs associated with exports gonna be, Obama?
This was, of course, carefully orchestrated by the Obama re-election team. He’s in full campaign mode all the time, now. Painting himself as “Captain Deficit-Fighter” is supposed to bring in those Romney Republicans. He was really trying to get the Republicans to agree to a token tax increase, but they didn’t budge. That would have made his job much easier.
The Democratic Party (originally the Democratic-Republican Party) has been around nearly since the founding of our democratic republic. Only in the 1932 – 1968 period was it the progressive party we recall fondly.
Any connection to that version of the DP is now fully severed. Obama has dragged it across the Rubicon. It is now something else. Obama has a vision for it, and he is working day and night to recast the DP in his vision. I think he is being pretty successful at it.
I’ve never been a Democrat, being a 3rd party gadfly my whole life. Howard Dean convinced me that there was hope for the DP. Victories (which owe a good deal to Dean) in 2006 and 2008 built further hope that not only might the DP stand for something, but that it could win back the political power to make it happen.
I still think the demographics strongly favor the DP, but I no longer hope that they will accomplish anything worthwhile with the power they achieve.
At first I was surprise by your post. But, I thought you said “political disembowelment”.
..
..
Not a bad idea, though.
I came to this fight late in the game and I wished I could have done more but the game is far from over…I joined FDL about 6 months ago and I am proud of being a part of group people who care about the world we live in and are committed to a better future. I saw Jane on TV over the past year or so and her vision and truth telling convinced me to join..thanks.
Things look bad now but no one can tell what is in store for us…
Is Markos implying that we shouldn’t criticize Obama because he’s black, too? Maybe that’s why they’re Bots over there.
Lemon fish at Guantanamo.
I think I’ll move to Brazil.
The Senate roll isn’t up yet; but when it is, it will be here.
(I keep refreshing every couple minutes, and will holler when it’s up.)
Nothing’s impossible I have found,
For when my chin is on the ground,
I pick myself up,
Dust myself off,
Start all over again.
Don’t lose your confidence if you slip,
Be grateful for a pleasant trip,
And pick yourself up,
Dust yourself off,
Start all over again.
Any ideas for the presidential primary?
He’s only half black. Let’s just criticize the white part. That should placate the NAACP. :-)
I just joined FDL, and I haven’t read all the comments on this post yet. But I think I have found a place of like minded individuals fed up with our system of governance.
It has been painful to wake up and realize that as a Democrat I have been played just as hard as the Republicans. But, Once your eyes have been opened, you can’t close them again.
We need real change that comes from the ground up. I will not play along to go along anymore.
Pretty sure Boxer voted “aye”…..ergo I could give a rat’s derriere what she has to say. I’ve called Stabenow’s office and told them that, thanks to her aye vote I will help fund whoever runs against her.
Welcome aboard!
Thanks, Jane. We need you. This adversity is making us collectively stronger.
“Even the WaPo” print edition front page today explained how the deal is going to kill the economy, especially the regional economy around the capital (DC-MD-VA). And, no, not “during the next decade,” but right away, next year. WaPo quoted JPMorgan estimate that omission of payroll tax holiday & failure to extend unemployment benefits will cut one and one-half percent (1.5%) from national GDP in 2012. Right on the eve of our favorite Dems’ re-elections. Whoever voted for the deal just committed political suicide.
Let’s not be so harsh. The only thing that’s really changed is that the commute is now a little bit longer. They prolly don’t pay mileage, right? /s
707!
That’s catchy! Do you have any music for that?
Welome aboard!
If KOS is running so low on reasons not to criticize Obama that he had to play the race card, how in the world does Obama expect to get re-elected? I mean, they can’t reinstall Windows Vista and reboot that many Obamabots before the elecction.
Boxturtle (Never mind the ones that are still running Win3.1)
Exactly.
It has to give a person pause when you realize that your representative has determined that he’s better off protecting his wealthy donors at the expense of his constituents. What does that tell you?
Not surprised …they do this all the time…in the State Houses too.
I think KO was disappointed by both those guys. He needs to get better guests. do we have any who could get on his show to bolster the left side, maybe a liberal economist to help explain why we are not bankrupt? Jane, you would be a great guest there.
Yes– things *can* change in the blink of an eye as *nothing* is permanent. That’s why you don’t give up and stay vigilant, fresh and ready to take advantage of the inflection points.
Thank you, Jane, and all for your witnessing and service. @>–;–
It is appalling to me that they decide who gets to vote “no.” What ever happened to voting for what you know is right? What about voting your conscience? What about voting for something that is good for your country? We need a different form of gov’t if this one doesn’t work any better than that.
hey Jane Hamsher !
my gratitude for providing an opportunity and resources for a regular jane like me to fight this horror – I can look my precious grandbabies in the eye knowing grandpa and I did all we could – bless you sister
I’ve been here about 2-3 weeks. It’s the only thing that keeps me from shooting myself. Only occassional trolls to look out for.
Welcome Goat!
Boxturtle (if your first name is Scape, there are a lot of posts for you)
http://www.usleap.org/obama-reviving-bush-free-trade-agreements
This is an old article. We need to start push back immediately on this, need to keep bringing up the fall of manufacturing with NAFTA and tie free trade to job loss and George Bush.
Welcome to the Lake, goat!
Jane, thanks again for your intelligence, integrity, energy and shrewdness. You are a great leader. If this turns out as bad as it looks, there will be new opportunities for progressives–as I’m sure you are aware. Keep it up, we depend on you! BIg {{{{hug}}}}.
There’s no place to run and hide (by emptywheel, August 2, 2011). Human society must evolve now or extinct itself.
OH, a rose ~ that’s beautiful, mzchief!!!!
Welcome to FDL. Glad to have you here with us.
Poking around different blogs this morning to get a feel for what folks are thinking. Even Obamabots are starting to ask WTF happened. It will be interesting to see what happens when the dims realize the show is over.
I left Daily Kos right after Mr. Kos famously observed, “Fuck Ralph Nader and fuck anyone who voted for him.”
That being said, to the extent that it’s humanly possibly, I think we should avoid engaging in sniping and recrimination towards the Kos faction. They share our basic values — essentially, New Deal Democrats, I would say — but have a different idea as to how to go about that.
They feel the Democratic Party needs to be reformed and people need to work within it. While we support individual Democrats we like and even the party as a whole on the rare occasion when it does something worthwhile, we feel it’s so hopelessly corrupted as not to be worth the trouble. In an odd sort of way, I almost wish they were right, as it would mean things are less out of whack then they are.
Having said that, I like to think that we are still natural allies, and to the extent that we can avoid engaging in cranky recriminations toward them, we should try to hold fire. If we can form a strategic alliance with Grover Norquist, who’s much less our cup of tea, we should keep lines of communication open to the Kos people as well.
I’m in Texas and when you open your window along the soone to be I69 corridor, you can hear the jobs being sucked down to Mexico and Central America. Sounds like a vacuum cleaner on a ceramic tile floor.
Hey he likes exports!! I bet he is tripping over his own feet trying to get to airport one to take another trip overseas with Michele and the girls. I keep waiting for them to go to Australia. My friend and I have a contest to see who guesses correctly where the Obamas will travel to next.
I am still just stunned by the transparent shameless audacity of the Gabby Giffords heart-tug ploy. It is claimed that she said she wanted to be there to cast a crucial vote?
Remind me again what was the House tally.
I may have been born at night, but, it wasn’t last night.
Welcome, Mr. Billygoat.
be stalwart, he and his friends will be getting a sharp object lesson in national economic shrinkage starting in October. Wait til one of his unemployed buds runs outta Unemployment Insurance (UI) at the end of the calendar year.
Jane needs to be on his show ….and soon
But, but…the food, beaches, and music are so great….
no, he was pointing out that OFA/DNC would come after challenger on that basis
to me, the real disappointment was when he stated he really didn’t know why Obama blew off McConnell’s clean ceiling offer – and I think he meant it
:)
…and all the trucks coming up…treacherous.
nahant does the best keyboard art. Doooo eeeeit, nahant!
I’m in Michigan, so I’ve been hearing that sucking sound for decades. :^)
Gotta go, to my job that will probably be axed by the Junta later this year.
The difference between an evolutionary and a revolutionary is that the revolutionary takes advantage of opportunities as they arise. Trotsky
This was, of course, carefully orchestrated by the Obama re-election team. He’s in full campaign mode all the time, now. Painting himself as “Captain Deficit-Fighter”
It’s ironic that he continues to play to the base of those who will never ever vote for him and spend each day plotting his demise. “Captain deficit fighter” is actually captain job loser and democracy crusher.
Can’t leave the country due to stupid immigration laws, can’t move to Vermont because it’s too damned cold. Best I can hope for at this point is for the #3 bus to clip me on its way down town. Thanks, Democrats.
Im with you goat.
btw, that third party, if it ever emerges as viable, or any other independent org that springs up:
The Free Range Party
I think that EPI’s estimate is probably under, given the ripples out to state and local government.
Get ready for the fight over extending the gas tax. (Cut road construction jobs).
And then there’s the FY2012 budget.
And then there will be the Joint Committee on the Deficit report and Congressional action.
And then Scrooge goes off to celebrate the war on Christmas.
There is some relief in the way that North Carolina’s House delegation voted. Heath Shuler doesn’t count as a Democrat. And, on reflection, I think that Kissell and McIntyre voted Tea Party. And the Senators (one representing Wells Fargo-Wachovia and the other representing Bank of America) voted as expected–for the financial system.
Back in the 80′s we used to have a saying, “You know what there are more of in Texas than anywhere int the world?…….Michigan license plates.
I am really wondering what they are going to do as the numbers keep going down. There may be a lot of people out there oblivious to what is happening but they are already being counted. The only movement I see is more awareness, more problems, more defections, and more rhetoric. This is not *even* a holding pattern.
Thank you!
Glad I didn’t listen. I want all the food I eat to remain in my stomach. I loathe this man. I will regret my vote till the day I die.
History will smile on you Jane!
The most important thing about war is?
Sun Tzu
Know Thyself! and Know Thy Enemy = Obama
Jane helps us with this everyday
this reminds me of the movie 300, us band of FDLers
must tell future generations that everyone was not moronic during the OBAMA years
Totally agree.
Having a good relationship with Markos is very important to me, and I respect him a great deal. When you can work together with someone to achieve something you support (like we did with Grover and Alan Grayson on Audit the Fed) it’s always a net positive. You can never hope to agree with anyone on everything, and the only alternative is to go it alone all the time. That is just not a recipe for success.
Thank bluewombat, excellent comment.
Thank you. I won’t lie it has been painful, but I’m so glad to know that I’m not the only one seeing what I’m seeing.
Export fantasies are all he has left. Unless the MOTU suddenly decide to invest on Main Street again because T-bills are now risky.
This is a scary time to be old. I have Medicare and a supplemental and I’m not wealthy but I have enough. I’m very worried about those elderly who are without assistance and care. Getting old is not easy but it certainly would be worse without SS and knowing that there’s help. Most of the elderly don’t actually know what is about to hit them.
If you have any problem there, come to Houston. we’ve got this new light rail service downtown. They don’t stop for anything. Had 104 accidental collisions with cars and pedestrians in the first 12 months of service.

I told my DINO Rep that in the future I would vote for his Republican opponent….not because I agree with the loathsome creatures, but because at least when the Repugs offer some evil legislation (like privatizing Social Security), the rank-and-file Dem voters scream bloody murder. They only seem to recognize they’re getting screwed when the Repugs are in power….Bush could never have gotten away with what Obama’s done.
Perhaps in the silence of the voting booth, I may relent and write in “Paul Wellstone”, but seriously, I’m never voting Democrat again.
Roll Call print edition today is reporting that Teabaggers (Tea Party (dot) Net & others) are planning to invade Congressional town hall meetings this month to demand of members “Tell us how you guarantee the cuts are going to happen.”
Thanks Jane, a champion as ever. I wrote to congressman Yoder in my state of Kansas, and he didn’t vote for the bill, although he was against it for very different reasons than mine. This year’s budget still needs to be settled (suposedly) by Sept. 30. There’s barely time to breathe before the next fight.
Right. More jobs are going to be lost and the junta is going to push the idea that we didn’t cut enough, hence more cuts and the cons will dig their heels in even deeper in oposition to tax hikes, the dems will be all too willing to support them. There isn’t even aid for the long term unemployed. I wonder what is going to happen to these people now that state stimulus is gone. Lots of pressure on Statehouses to assist these people who literally do not have anything.
btw, did Preznit Jobs Killer actually say he wanted Congress to focus on trade deals ?!?!
jeebus
Did you watch Keith’s special comment?
I was shocked about Cleaver…he is a longtime home town (not mine) hero. Very sad…wonder what his constituents think. Im thinking it must have been support for his friend in the WH.
nobody “deserves” this Gubmit…”We get the kind of government we put up with.” Ralph Bunch, Portland State University
Both of my Ca Senators voted for this swill. I think I have some letter writing to do.
We’re ordinary people content to be such and we never aspired to elevated money or status. A decent living without juggling difficult priority choices would have been just fine, thank you very much. Robert Townsend of Up the Organization advised company execs to eschew the special parking spots and park in the employees’ parking lot because You’ll meet a better class of people there. That’s been my experience.
Thank you Ms. Hamsher, you’ve been incredible!
We must now hit the streets and hit them in the only places it truly hurts: boycotts and strikes.
Stimulus winding down.
Austerity with future cuts from states.
More jobs lost.
More revenue lost.
However many state/public jobs are lost, more will be lost in this year and in the next.
Thank you sir, may I have another.
hmmmmm, don’t see the gutsy™ Barbara Boxer
still hidin’ in that candy shop I see
She voted yes.
And Vitter is a nay ~ vote-washing much?
Only six Dems (and Sanders) voted against the bill.
Yup. Thanks. I just knew it was coming.
sadly, I knew she would
isn’t there all kinds of defunding of various EPA like enforcement resources in this bill ??
That’s my observation too. It makes me angry every day.
They are both worthless. Difi is up for re-election. I have not voted for her the last 3 times already. Until we get the redistricting done it’s hard to say. Unless tings change Difi is safe. Boxer only won her re election because Meg Whitman was so pathetic.
How heroic.
Awesome. Thank you. And here’s the link to the Senate roll call.
Yes. It’s terrible. Just think of the appeals to the Congress members. They must get them every single day. And yet they are deaf to this suffering.
I think its kind of “catchy” but then someone like Bill Maher will assign a logo to it like a “chicken”. How about party of “Limited Terms” ?
I believe so. I intend to let her know what’s what. Before she ever ran, she came to my home to discuss the county with me. I liked her but she has really disappointed me so many times now. What I can’t figure out is why the Dems are staying with Obama – he cannot help them get re-elected since he’s about as popular as the plague.
Yeah Hey…..the Limited Terms Society…..we will own the country with that name.
… and the Dow dips below 12,000
wha ? not enough canapes and quailwings at Geithner’s pep rallY ?!?!?
p.s. if it ‘falls’ again today, it will break a record set in ’78. maybe the smug he-is-Jimmy-Carter! crowd is right after all
What kind of people could hear those appeals and then vote to screw them over knowing full well they are only going to twist the knife in the near term.
I agree Shameless cowards all of them!
Gillibrand, Harkin, Lautenberg, Menendez, Merkley, Good Nelson, Sanders, appear to be the only Dems who voted Nay. Only six Democrats and one Independent. holy shit
CNN says they are worried about the economy numbers AND the super committee.
And now Congress has left town.
On edit: Houston, we have a problem. Houston? Houston? Are you there?
At least when they’re out of town they won’t be passing any stupid bills. Good riddance.
Maybe something edible will wash up before we’re chased off the millionaire’s oceanfront property.
I surely do not have an answer to that other than we truly have no idea as to the level of their insularity
So true!
Obama sez he has to have tax increases.
But McConnell said last night there can be NO tax increases.
FAIL.
Welcome aboard.
NOW, CNN sez it’s our fault: “people voted for this!”
Super committee has to be seated in 2 weeks, people!
TWO WEEKS!
get ‘er dunned !
Boehner said the people he will appoint to the super congress will make the possibility of a tax increase not likely.
and via twitter (I had volume off) Preznit Jobs Killer spent some time concern trolling what he should’ve insisted on – unemployment ?!??!
ding ding ding! (I had no idea)
I extend my thanks to you Jane for opening my eyes about the system. I also thank all the Firedawgs that have welcomed me into their community. I am more committed than ever to do what I can to make sure my
selloutscongressional representatives don’t get re-elected here in Missouri. Jane I will need suggestions and guidance to make a dent in this red state. I am with you all the way. My heart is saddened today for what my kids have to endure. I will not go down without a fight. Thank you for a place where I feel at home and for accepting me as member.Evil succeeds when good men do nothing and you all are good people.
Thanks for all you do Jane. I admire and respect your mind and the work you do so much. Wish I could add more in the way of money and activism………. I did get myself yelled at by a Rep. Tom Graves gnome but no appointment to see him.
They’re right. 29% of people.
No. It can’t work during recess for one so there goes August, and it’s mandated to have its first meeting no later than 45 days from today, which is Monday September 19th.
Do we know who the super committee is going to be yet? Or how they’re to be selected?
ICYMI:
Yesterday, New York Times: That’s not Trash, That’s Dinner
Yep they are saying the market is worried about the economy but not this retraction bill. It’s all the same thing. I cannot see how the economy and the market can fail to crap out in coming weeks.
Maj Ldr in each house to select
p.s. inside baseball types thought today’s no vote Gillebrand had a better than outside chance
The only name I heard mentioned is Blue Dog Mark Warner. He is more Tea Party than most GOP. You better believe Obama will demand Blue Dogs dominate the Dem. delegation on the commission.
I was just listening to NPR’s Ron Elving discuss the debt ceiling “fiasco” and I can no longer listen to NPR. The political coverage is truly abysmal. Elving said the glue that kept Congress functioning, moderates, no longer exists. More false equivalencies. These “people” ate totally clueless and disgusting.
Alan Grayson! Yeah! Check out his new website.
I’m sure that the man of sterling character, Durbin, will be on the committee. s/
* wombat blushes *
Sadly, I’m not the least bit surprised.
Chris Hedges
Glenn Greenwald
William Rivers Pitt
LOL ohhh jeez! reminds me of D.C.’s Metro (subway). somebody gets run over by a train on the tracks once a month. just happened yesterday. the passenger backup gets so thick people are crushed on the platform even before a train gets there.
someone’s gotta carry the catfood.
Warner, Gillebrand, Conrad is my guess, but I am not one of Inside Baseball kids.
Hey, more good news – I heard part of a program on climate change this a.m.: one guest predicted that Boston will soon have a climate more like…Washington. D.C., that is.
I remember when I left Boston because I was so tired of ten months of winter; remember going to D.C. with a group in Sept. for job interviews, and being somewhat amazed at how much hotter it was, how we melted in our wool interview suits…
So, either Vermont will also be much warmer, or it will be …just right!
Vermont with palm trees and sandy beaches. :)
Jon Stewart played a clip of Obama thanking the American people for phoning and contacting their representatives to get this passed. Stewart said something to the effect, “don’t put the responsibility for this turd on the American people!”
There is a serious mental disconnect in there. All the polls say 71% of the people were opposed to this bill but Obama thinks they were calling to support. He needs a shrink.
Pelosi, Reid, Boehner and McConnel are appointing the Super Congress? I think I know how many Romans must have felt when J. Ceasar usurped the powers of the Senate.
but maybe he was right that the actual “appointments” to the Super Congress could be made in the next two weeks?
It’s just the spin to make it look good to the “independents” the most ill-informed, under informed and misinformed of the electorate. I’m so disgusted I’m sick and brokenhearted.
Thanks to you Jane, you are wonderful and an inspirations to all of us. And thanks to all you guys and gals at FDL who have done so much work. Just regroup and keep on fightin’, that’s what we do, and besides, the alternative is just unthinkable. Fighters, not quitters !
William Black
Dean Baker
Paul Stiglitz (he probably wouldn’t like the mention)
Robert Kennedy Jr. (for business collectives strategies)
Before I go, I just want to add my thanks to Jane (and to Christy, Marcy, bmaz, Scarecrow, etc., etc., ) for making this place to gather and bemoan and make plans and actually figure out stuff to do over these last however many years it’s been.
Trying to get through these years of disaster would have been simply intolerable alone. With FDL, I haven’t felt alone, and I’ve been inspired to keep trying when I might well have given up long ago.
That goes for the FDL memberhsip, too, formal and informal.
Thank you.
I would also include:
Ravi Batra
Robert Reich
Sure – and they can hire their director who can hire and staff the support for the committee during that time. (Yes, they have a budget for committee staff, and we’ll have to keep an eye out for who those people turn out to be.)
I’m wondering who will turn out to be the “Liz Fowler” in this dreck.
I wish that meme would die. Aren’t we the American people? Don’t you know the power of the forces aligned against the American people? You know, the forces polluting their minds, bodies and fight?
I consider it as ugly a meme as there is out there.
Obama was reported to have said he wants deficit hawks appointed to the Comittee of the Twelve Caesars (aka Politburo).
The Politburo usually takes its orders from the leader; do not expect deviation from the leader’s desires.
I kept overlapping you, thanks so much for the quick work on the vote count. I have a sinking feeling they didn’t really read the official text of this horrendous thing. Not that they cared.
I bet there are gonna be a lotta surprised critters after Labor Day. “Whaaa? We voted for that? You mean we already cut $350 Billion out of defense spending? But there won’t be any new revenue for redeployment assistance? You mean we hafta vote four more times on debt ceiling disapprovals and veto overrides before the re-election? Whaaaa?”
Thanks. I want to make a complete list in order to encourage us to realize this is not over.
Thanks. Great additions.
Thanks!
That’s a real blast from the past. Wuz that LBJ era? I forgot.
I’ll see yer Ravit Batra and raise you:
Nassim Nicholas Taleb (author of “Black Swan”)
Shared Sacrifice as proposed by Monied Powers That Be: You get sacrificed; they get your share.
Anyone who voted for this bill either has ill will toward us or is too stupid to represent us. In either case, they need to be retired.
Here’s the empowerment list so far:
Jane Hamsher
Paul Krugman
Marcy Wheeler
Matt Taibbi
Naomi Klein
Elizabeth Warren
Chris Hedges
Glenn Greenwald
William Rivers Pitt
William Black
Dean Baker
Paul Stiglitz (he probably wouldn’t like the mention)
Robert Kennedy Jr. (for business collectives strategies)
Ravi Batra
Robert Reich
Powwow
Both Dems and R’s are the economic hitmen to this age of austerity.
Any chance we can get average people of good conscience from both Parties to declare their independence?
There’s more freedom to choosing independence than jumping into another Party that will be hollowed out from within, rather focus individuals on issues and throwing stones at the failed domestic and foreign policies of both despised parties.
So The great orange Boner and Whimpering Reid get to pick our fate? Fuck.
A few commenters have mentioned they thought Congress still had to work on the FY 2012 budget. I thought the FY 2012 budget was just finished in the last two days. I thought that was why the Super Congress was such a horrendous abdication of everything Congress is responsible for. I have not read the official text yet, all 74 effing pages of the PDF, but I thought the Super Congress now has authority to appropriate within the “caps” established for FY 2012, which is why its schedule is so compressed. Please straighten me out on this, anybody who has read parts of the final bill.
Cornell West?
The staff will be stovepiped directly from Pete Peterson and the Hamilton Project.
No, she was a WellPoint (Health Insurance Co) executive who left her job to work for Max Baucus and essentially wrote the Health Insurance Reform bill PPACA.
A fox writing the hen-house-rules situation.
So I’m guessing we end up with someone from AEI, or Pete Peterson, something like that actually writing up the bill.
Good one. A great voice on poverty and justice!
And I just added Amy Goodman too!
Might want to look into some death threats made against a homeless woman and got him temporarily kicked off Democratic Underground, not that getting kicked off there was anything other than an honor. They took him back though, just wow seeing him among so many great minds, just wow. William Pitt should not be part of a list of great minds like that. Maybe someone wants to delete this comment, I’m unsure if it is even appropriate, but I’m still shocked.
This bill has nothing to do with continuing funding the government past 9/30 – zip, zero, nada.
The FY ’12 budget fight looms.
Love Cornel West.
With a slowing economy and fewer taxes paid, there’s no way this new debt ceiling will take the Treasury Department past the 2012 election. We’ll see this same circus in September of next year. It’s McConnell’s plan to make Obama look even weaker when his precious independents start paying attention to the presidential election.
She is now, iirc, implementing the regulations in a new role at HHS.
Sigh… we knew it was coming; we bought up stock in Johnson & Johnson (makers of KY Jelly); and yet… witnessing these hit-men/women *stealing* from us is beyond despicable.
Thanks to Jane & all the pups who’ve done their best to stop the madness.
Next page: how to start primarying every last one of these SOB thieving robbing bastards!
In economics and business:
Stiglitz
Krugman
Galbraith
Dean Baker
The MMT folks
Bill Black
Simon Johnson
Michael Lewis
Matt Taibbi
Thanks for the heads up.
Hokaaaay–I missed a line and didn’t have my reading glasses so couldn’t make out the table at the bottom.
Looks like when all things are factored in, proposed cuts in the bill plus no payroll tax holiday and no extension of unemployment insurance, then for 2012 the drag on the economy is minus 1.5%, matching JPMorgan’s figure, and the potential job losses are 1,822,000. About 158,000 extra jobs lost per month, or, to look at weekly figures, about 35,000 extra jobs lost each week. On top of what was already predicted.
Wow–One million eight hundred and twenty-two thousand additional jobs lost! WOW. In one year, a presidential election year.
How will Congressional Dems campaign? What can they run on? Seriously! Obama has kneecapped them by doing Republican things which Dem and Dem-leaning indies absolutely HATE.
So, unemployment predicted to be about 8.3%, an improvement over our present unemployment, may well go up to 8.9%.
That ought to stimulate people to vote in 2012…but for whom? When both parties seem quite happy with extended un- and DISemployment?
Yep. This madness, rapine & pillaging has only just begun… get ready for more of the same in the near future.
A great list from one of my fave firepups!
Just added bmaz, Mary and Cynthia.
So far, 30 names of empowerment.
Childhood’s End, yep.
If the Founding documents were composed today, the Declaration, Articles of Confederation, Constitution, and Federalist Papers would have zero literary quality. They would use prose only as a necessary device to express numbers from polls, surveys, accounting offices, economists’ formulas, & so on.
Thanks for all your hard work, Jane.
Even the WaPo” print edition front page today explained how the deal is going to kill the economy, especially the regional economy around the capital (DC-MD-VA). And, no, not “during the next decade,” but right away, next year. WaPo quoted JPMorgan estimate that omission of payroll tax holiday & failure to extend unemployment benefits will cut one and one-half percent (1.5%) from national GDP in 2012.
Was I just under a rock for the last few weeks, but do you remember any of the coprolite media, you know, like, giving anyone this kinda, sorta important information so they could, like, maybe make a halfway informed decision before we got handed this shit sandwich?
Harry Shearer
After a round of appointments, I wanted to log on to extend my thanks to you Jane, your team of newshounds, and the FDL community for the superb and tireless work you’ve done the past few years. Your reporting on the debt ceiling debacle was by far the best on the net. Take a well-deserved rest to recharge your batteries for the coming fights. I love the fact that you never give up fighting the good fight!! Thank you!!
This list that klynn started which some of us are contributing to would actually be a good answer to “who warned this shit sandwich would be a shit sandwich?” Krugman has been warning since March 2009 that Obama was too-little too-late on rescuing the economy. Every week. Probably over 100 columns by now. Which reminds me……
Adam Levitin (Creditslips(dot)Org)
Katie Porter (Creditslips(dot)Org)
removed by me
awesome. so the economy-killing will effectively unravel the debt-ceiling increase cuz it’ll make our short-run deficit worse, requiring more borrowing than the $2.4 Trillion they are sposed to add?
Thanks Fractal. The idea is to have such a strong list representing “sanity”.
Powwow, your comment from the other night.would make a great post.
Yup. And McConnell said no tax increases, last night!
Oh, dear, I am repeating myself … I have become a circular loop.
LOL!
Please add Bill Moyers
This list is a great idea!!
Thank you!
Oh my, how could I have overlook him!
Ooops. Thanks, Kelly!
So we do get a breather … except for home townhalls …
You are doing a fabulous job! And it is heartening to see that list growing..
Jane and crew, I am late in adding my thanks, but thank you from my heart.
The moving finger writes
And having writ, moves on
Nor all thy piety nor wit
Shall lure it back
to cancel half a line
Nor all thy tears
wash out a line of it
And they didn’t need the votes of all the Dems who voted FOR to pass the thing.
I’m amazed more Senators didn’t ask for & get the okay to vote “no.” Guess it was something like, “you vote ‘no,’ and no DNC money for your re-election. We wouldn’t want to make Obama look bad.”
Jane, et all,
I hunkered down during the 8 years of George W., reading this site, Glen Greenwald and crooksandliars — but I didn’t do anything. I have been cynical about politics since I was 8 or so – was and still convinced that the game was rigged. I allowed myself to be swept up in the tide of hope that was the Obama election. Now I’m back to being cynical, frustrated, pissed off but I want to do something about it. What can I do to help? Thank you for this site – it’s a welcome change from the corporate mainstream media drivel that passes for news.
That’s the pressure and the choice they have to weigh. I have NO doubt. It’s probably amazing that any of them voted No at all, considering, OR maybe they are the ones who know they are already on the outs.
Thank you so much, Jane and all. I have a similar quotation to yours, slightly different:
*************
…Concentrating on the turns the van was making, the zheks fell silent. Yes, the taiga and the tundra awaited them, the record cold of Oymyakon and the copper excavations of Dzhezkazgan; pick and barrow; starvation rations of soggy bread; the hospital; death. The very worst.
But there was peace in their hearts.
They were filled with the fearlessness of those who have lost everything, the fearlessness which is not easy to come by, but which endures… [The First Circle, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn]
**********
You have said many times it is not just about the White House. It for sure won’t be now.
And, for that list, Yves…Yves…help me folk, Naked Capitalism? Oh, and JK Galbraith.
Wall Street’s man got the job done. There will be another depression. To Wall Street, a depression isn’t a problem, it’s the solution to a problem they have been working on since the last depression. That “problem” is the cost of American labor. They truly believe that the cost of American labor needs to be brought into line with countries like Mexico and Russia before jobs can be created again in America.
Michael Hudson?
Teddy, pardon me, my @262 was supposed to be a reply to you. Got distracted by lunch.
Thanks for the added name ideas!
Bill Moyers
Mauimom! Good morning, is it? Wish I was far away from the east coast right now.
Anyway, we generally assume the Dems have decided to serve the oligarchs whenever possible (thus the imperative to avoid default so as to coddle the bondholders, i.e., banks & sovereign govts, mostly) and also that they will never take personal responsibility for cutting Social Security and Medicare (thus the imperative to empower the Super Congress). So, the Dems in the Senate who cater to the millionaires & global corporations wanted to vote Aye to appease their patrons. In general, the Senate Dems no longer fear the votes of the people. Only six voted Nay.
I really think the Senate Dems calculated that they are not under any threat except from the oligarchs. It is our job to alter their calculations.
Amy Goodman
Jeremy Scahill
It appears to me that the 12 member joint select comm on def reduction will be the group to push trough the infrastructure Bank.
Bill Moyers (reddog – yes!)
Amy Goodman and Jeremy Scahill added! Thanks!
Please forgive me for providing a link to a tune on this thread. I listened to this song several times before Obama’s prime time speech on July 25th, and was struck by the fact that the lyrics are more appropriate today than when they were written. Check it out.

Add Selise and Mary from EW
We should all eat crow for disregarding Selise
Got them on the list!
Thanks for the additions! And yes, We should all eat crow.
Although, I have found selise to be spot-on.
Way late to this today but a laurel and hearty handshake n hug to Mz. Hamsher for your stellar work.
HUGE kudo’s also go out to David Dayen n Jon Walker for all their coverage, insights, opinions and work. Work hosses both your efforts help to school this proggy in manners I never dreamt were possible, much less needed.
The combined FDL effort is as good as any 4 yr or MA program.
Last, and most reverently and passionately stated, Scarecrow-words kinda fail me as I used them up on the others there, but . . .
Scarecrow, you are a hoss. Your insights and offerings have been incredible thruout this ordeal . . . I can only say that you have made me more learned that I ever was about it all . . . if I ever get a job I will donate a membership in your name for you to offer to someone needy who really wants it. Thank you for your work.
May the ’12 Erections be a complete and utter rejection of both parties and may our political system as it is rot in the hell of its own making, along with it’s corporate overlords and the servants we thought we had elected to serve the needs and desires of we the people.
But for now on we MUST trudge, with only the solace that there are many, many Pups, the entirety of FDL & Staff and millions more nation wide across all ethnic, religious, political and economic and ideological like us who are pissed off, under or un employed, devastated, dying or soon to be dying, homeless or soon to be homeless . . . . all trudging with us along this dreary pot holed hiway of our lives.
We trudge on. We must.
To that end, we owe it to ourselves and each other.
We MUST. Trudge. On.
Namaste to one and all.
Slept through it. Good to hear from so many here. Tonight I’ll open a couple beers to the memory of the America that was.
And then tomorrow on to dealing with the America that is… and the America that is yet to come.
And to Jane and the rest of the FDL crew, my thanks.
I’ve let my reps know that they lost my vote permanently and some others as well. I am proud to run the Lake with the Dawgs. Thanks again Jane and crew.
What are the rules for emigrating?
That is sad. I don’t understand that how, in this so-called information age, so many people are so easily swayed by false narratives. It’s as if they want to believe this crap, and go out of their way to reject their own self interest.
We’ve become a nation of bootlickers.
It’s Joseph Stiglitz, not Paul. (Others before you got it wrong.)
I’d also suggest adding Yves Smith of the Naked Capital blog.
The list also needs at least one person each who is really grounded in labor issues and in environmental issues (though RFK, Jr. would help fit the latter). I’d also suggest Tom Engelhardt or someone else who focuses on the Empire, though someone above has also mentioned Jeremy Scahill. Hope these suggestions help.
Chris Hedges
Seriously? People like Chris Hedges are half of leftism’s problem in the United States. He’s practically a walking demotivational poster for it.
Yep.
And editing error. Had Paul Krugman on twice. His name was just above Joseph Stiglitz. Zealious editing.
“Might want to look into some death threats made against a homeless woman and got him temporarily kicked off Democratic Underground, not that getting kicked off there was anything other than an honor. They took him back though, just wow seeing him among so many great minds, just wow. William Pitt should not be part of a list of great minds like that. Maybe someone wants to delete this comment, I’m unsure if it is even appropriate, but I’m still shocked.”
William Rivers Pitt was a friend back when DU started – we both pushed the site. David amused himself by “moderating” his site so that after a couple of years there were continuous mockery of the religious and of the Roman Catholic Church (Pitt is a Roman Catholic). I started a religious study group and David encourage his atheists friends to do 24;7/365 disruption of all posts in that area. Pitt spoke one on one with David – got no where – and left DU. I followed shortly thereafter in leaving. Both of us were then officially banned.
I do not know all of William Rivers Pitt’s posts on DU, but I do know he was a “get” that was treated poorly, despite having the NYT best seller book What Team Bush Doesn’t Want You to Know which consisted of an in-depth interview with former United Nations weapons inspector Scott Ritter. In it, Pitt and Ritter examine the Bush administration’s justifications for war with Iraq and call for a diplomatic solution instead of war. In reviewing this book, The Guardian called it “the most comprehensive independent analysis of the state of knowledge about Iraq’s weapons programmes until the new team of inspectors went back.”
Pitt has worked as the managing editor at the liberal commentary website truthout.org.
He was in 2004 Press Secretary for Dennis Kucinich run for President – he current is editor of a few liberal sites.
He is on DU at http://journals.democraticunderground.com/WilliamPitt
I do not know the context of the post you refer to, or its content, but I do know the man. He should be on our list. Your comment, until you provide the Pitt post with context, should be ignored.
