Who Knew Firing Public Workers Increases Unemployment?

By: emptywheel Friday July 8, 2011 7:30 am

While the political elite debate how to fix a nonexistent problem (or at least a non-critical one) the jobs crisis continues unabated. The draconian cuts at the state level public sector are only making things worse.

Unmoved by Grand Bargain Talks, Jobs Report Comes In Terrible

By: David Dayen Friday July 8, 2011 6:33 am

The public sector took away almost all of the job gain in the private sector. Those public sector jobs, just like the private sector, are paid in money, which employees use to buy food and clothing and pay the mortgage. They are real jobs, real jobs which are going away mainly because of ridiculous ideology about government budgets being like a family’s.

Washington’s Favorite Terrorists – Mujahedin-e Khalq

By: Trita Parsi Friday July 8, 2011 6:30 am

Not all terrorist groups are alike Mujahedin-e Khalq, the Iranian terror group is in Washington lobbying to be taken off the terrorism list. It is not that they have changed their ways, they just have deep pockets and sympathetic Republicans to help them.

What do you do when you are facing a law suit that you are going to loose? If you are Visa and Mastercard, you change the policy that you are being sued over. This is what they did with processing donations to Wikileaks.

Late Night: Pouting Baby Asks “Why Does Mr. 0 Hate Old and Poor People?”

By: Jim White Thursday July 7, 2011 8:00 pm

So Mr. 0 wants to cut Social Security. He knows this will hurt old and poor people when he does it. Why does Mr. 0 hate old and poor people? I think maybe it’s because when he cuts Social Security, he will make corporations and rich people happy. Since it’s the corporations and rich people who will give Mr. 0 the money he needs for his re-election campaign, he needs to keep them happy. It looks like getting re-elected means more to Mr. 0 than taking care of old and poor people does. And that is very sad and goes against the moral and religious teachings Mr. 0 had as a child.

Mr. President; You Are Out Of Touch on Debt

By: Jon Walker Thursday July 7, 2011 7:14 pm

President Obama is now suggesting that Medicare and Social Security benefit cuts be a part of a deal to address the federal deficit. This is exactly the opposite of what the American people what.

It is no wonder that the American people are so unhappy with the current job performance our “elected representatives.” They are simply not representing us.

The Very Serious People Missing the Interconnectedness of Everything

By: dakine01 Thursday July 7, 2011 6:27 pm

Unemployment is officially at 9.1% (roughly 14M people) and underemployment is nearly double that. Social Security has been one of if not the most effective government program of all time, yet all we hear out of Washington is how there must be “shared sacrifices” (from all but the very richest of us of course) so Social Security must be “on the table” for budget discussions, even though Social Security has not contributed one dime to the “problems” with the budget.
