Late Night: That Empty Feeling |

“Increasing building code enforcement in lower-income neighborhoods” and “fixing broken sidewalks and curbs” doesn’t sound nearly as fun as “installing 60 new security cameras and putting 100 more cops on the street to catch scumbags,” but it has an undeniable impact on the lives of those in those neighborhoods. And what do you know, it actually nets a cash-poor city some dough, too.

Tonight on ABC-News Nightline: Does Bachmann Clinic Pray Away the Gay”?” |
| By: Teddy Partridge Monday July 11, 2011 6:30 pm |
I’m not sure why ABC News, summarizing two very straightforward reports published Friday, decided a question mark was necessary in its headline: Michele Bachmann Clinic: Where You Can Pray Away the Gay? The coverage from Friday, by Truth Wins Out (TWO) and The Nation, was quite clear that the answer to that question is “We’ll Certainly Try!”

On July 1, 2011, Pelican Bay prisoners began an indefinite hunger strike to protest the conditions in the prison. Across prison-manufactured racial and geographical lines, prisoners came together behind five core demands to force the prison officials to end the use of “group punishment”; abolish a “debriefing policy and the current criteria for determining who is and who isn’t a gang member; comply with the US Commission 2006 Recommendation Regarding an End to Long-Term Solitary Confinement and end conditions of isolation.
State AGs Have Done Almost No Investigation of Servicer Abuse and Foreclosure Fraud |

Shahien Nasiripour leads today with a persistent complaint I’ve had about the state Attorney General investigation: that it was not an investigation at all, but an immediate move to settlement talks, in ways that undermined the goal of getting a solution that matches the level of fraud and abuse.
Up is Down |

I can’t recall a moment in my lifetime when government was so extremely out of step with the will of the American people. But it seems like the only fight to be had these days is to see who can screw the middle class the hardest.
The Conscience & Agency of Bradley Manning |
| By: Kevin Gosztola Monday July 11, 2011 12:33 pm |
With previously unreleased instant message chat logs, Steve Fishman for New York Magazine published a feature story July 3, 2011, that further examined the accused whistleblower to WikiLeaks, Bradley Manning. It looked at his family life before going to Iraq, his time in Baghdad and plans to use the military to pay for college and his current relationship with his father. The tidbit that drew the most attention, and will likely continue to draw attention, was the section of Fishman’s article allegedly detailing Manning’s interest in pursuing a sex change.
