Wingnuts everywhere are excitedly linking to this Forbes piece which FINALLY PROVES AL GORE IS FAT GLOBAL WARMING IS A HOAX!!!!!!
NASA satellite data from the years 2000 through 2011 show the Earth’s atmosphere is allowing far more heat to be released into space than alarmist computer models have predicted, reports a new study in the peer-reviewed science journal Remote Sensing. The study indicates far less future global warming will occur than United Nations computer models have predicted, and supports prior studies indicating increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide trap far less heat than alarmists have claimed.
And who authored the study? Someone at Caltech? MIT? Cambridge?
Study co-author Dr. Roy Spencer, a principal research scientist at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and U.S. Science Team Leader for the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer flying on NASA’s Aqua satellite, reports that real-world data from NASA’s Terra satellite contradict multiple assumptions fed into alarmist computer models.
Oh, Roy Spencer.
You know Roy Spencer, don’t you? He’s an unabashed creationist and a fellow at the Heartland Institute, which is funded by ExxonMobil to promote “free market ideas.” He’s “The Official Climatologist of the Rush Limbaugh Show” and he says he gets his views on science from the bible. And every few years, he issues a fatwa another paper or book “debuking” the myth of global warming.
Then, inevitably, three things happen: 1) there’s a huge celebration in Wingnuttia; 2) actual scientists examine said study; — and then, 3) they promptly smack down Spencer.
Let me save you some trouble here, wingnuts. You’re going to need to do a little better than a Big Oil-funded flat-earther from the University of Tractor Fixin’ and Bible Learnin’ to override every major scientific society and academy on the planet.
Just trying to save you a little trouble here.

Nice try, BT, but let’s face it: Roy Spencer’s ilk will be denying climate change even after they start buying up oceanfront property in Appalachia.
Blue Texan!
You should watch Bill Nye smack down a FOX talking head who is trying to insert a little denial propaganda into a discussion about the discovery of an ancient volcano on the moon. The talking head doesn’t have
enoughany science knowledge to manufacture a good segue into his denial trip and Nye starts cutting him down from there.Guess where the Von Braun Center is located (hat tip Jeff Kaye, July 28, 2011)?
How far does Nye get before the denier physically plants corks in his ears to prevent reality from seeping in?
It never comes to that but the denier sputters a bit.
Kinda quiet here tonight. Am I missing some fascinating astronomical event, like a total eclipse of Sarah Palin’s ego?
Oh my gawd, I saw that somewhere today. The blank-eyed faintly smiling blank-headed Fox-ie was just pitiful.
Somehow, he apparenlty thought, volcanos on the moon are related somehow to (non)global warming on earth…
Just. amazing.
And so illustrative of why we are in such dire straits. Similar empty-heads are running things!
Hunh. Can’t edit. Oh well – just to add – Bill Nye found it necessary to explain that “science is true.”
I thought the most obvious thing would have been that the moon doesn’t have an atmosphere to speak of but there was so much wrong with what he said, Nye could attack it from any angle at all and shoot him down.
LMAO! Several tines!
Why? Is Gingrich’s chutzpah in the right position tonight?
bt!
Let me guess: he was smirking. These bozos are always smirking. Especially when someone more knowledgeable is tearing them a new rhetorical sphincter.
707!
Gonna call it a night. Oya pups.
You know sometimes I just don’t get the PTB. They can buy politicians, every dept of the fed and state governments, and anything they disagree with (can’t beat em, buy em).
But sometimes I just don’t get it. Is this the best they can do?
Even if climate change/global warming is insignificant, what about all the toxins in the air that we put there? What about the links (several) between smog and pollution and medical problems (namely respiratory, but there are more)?
I mean, don’t their kids breathe the air? Do their kids all live in boarding schools in Switzerland? Because that’s the only way I can see how it would even begin to work in their heads.
Your kid spends most of his time in Switzerland, where the air quality is better. In addition, if they come home once in a while, their exposure is limited. There you go.
But ALL their kids are in Switezerland (or another country with good air quality)? For their entire life? When they graduate, do they just stay there?
Same goes for the water. You can’t drink bottled water because it’s actually worse for you (google bottled water and coliform bacteria, or bottled water and studies and bacteria, or some combo of above). A lot of times they just fill the water bottles with tap water.
So then they are drinking the same poisons we are. And so are their kids!!!
I mean WTF you dumb motherFers?
It was maybe just short of a smirk…because, I think, he wanted to smirk, but he just couldn’t follow what Bill Nye was saying, so the smirk didn’t quiiiiite come out.
Night, Peggy.
I’m impressed–that could almost be construed as something resembling humility. Well, not really.
g’nite margaret
Hey, Tex, just wanted to say how much I enjoy your posts, esp. the humorous commentary.
Liberals in Texas have to have a sense of humor in order to survive. There are several of us here at fdl.
You’ve just provided a proof for the dull, distorted ignorance created by extreme selfishness and greed.
By the way, how many of those kids actually don’t have a very good relationship with their parents who had sent them off to a Swiss boarding school rather than providing them with love and attention? I’ve known plenty of those kids and the number is pretty high.
If there is a celestial body that could, I don’t know of it.
Time to hit the sack. It is a bit quiet, isn’t it? Or has everyone already moved up to LLN?
Thanks for the update on this asshat BT.
May Mr. Spencer bugger himself into extinction along with the dinosaurs that passed away 6,000 years ago.
You can’t fix stupid AND hate.
Ayn Rand, heavy smoker, died of lung cancer still claiming the science was a lie and conspiracy designed to destroy private industry.
Correcting, There are several of us liberals
at FDLin Texas.Heh. ‘Niters.
I’m guessing this is the only journal that agreed to publish this paper. I’m trying to get a look at the editors of this issue but the spinning wheel of death has been spinning for quite awhile now. The subject matter is totally different from the other papers in the current issue but since I can’t access anything other than the home page there’s no telling what the contents of any of them are.
The soory thing is now this loser can run around with his pals at faux news saying his work is in a peer-reviewed journal.
These guys are all cookie-cut from the same Koch Bros. mold — science is flawed, the earth is flat and is only 6,000 years old. The only way to beat sense into them is to beat them and their backers at the polls. There is no compromise with a brick wall. You drive thru it.
FYI, here’s another enviro story today with the typical Republican talking points, representing the views of the agricultural industry that opposes any pollution controls. “Va. Congressman Aiming to Halt (Chesapeake) Bay Cleanup Plan.

Did you see this?
US government conducts ‘integrity inquiry’ on federal biologist amid lobbying by oil firms for Arctic permits
In the summer of 1973, I was aboard the Coast Guard ice breaker Burton Island when we reached what was, until that time, the farthest most northern point a surface ship ever penetrated into the Arctic ice pack. I don’t recall the exact latitude, but it was in the 70′s North. That would be about 1300 miles from the North Pole at 90° N. (slightly less than the distance from Washington DC to Denver). In 2004 a Russian Icebreaker sailed in OPEN WATER (not having to break ice) to the North Pole and had to go several miles beyond to find thick enough ice to allow passengers to disembark as they had been promised they could do. Any babbling idiot who says the planet isn’t warming either is being paid to lie or or should have their IQ tested with a tire gauge, or both.
Forbes jumped in a bit early to praise this guy.
His paper is at: http://www.drroyspencer.com/2011/07/our-refutation-of-dessler-2010-is-accepted-for-publication/
Dr Spencer did not publish in the well-established journal, the International Journal of Remote Sensing, but instead is in a brand new journal that claims peer review.
Seems the quality of Dr Spencer’s work in the past has been poor.
While he and a fellow named Christy are said to have made breakthroughs in the application of MSU to characterizing tropical cyclones and then tropospheric temperature, they messed up temperature measurements while proclaiming the precision and accuracy of their measurements [1,2,3]. Already in 1991 it was pointed out [4] that their analyses were insufficient to distinguish the cooling they would soon try to sell [5] from warming that would be consistent with surface measurements. Their messes in the analysis of MSU data included the method of averaging different satellite records which introduce a spurious cooling trend [6], their disregard of orbital decay introduced another spurious cooling trend [7]; failure to note that MSU-2 showed a spurious cooling trend due to spillover of stratospheric cooling into the tropospheric temperature signal [8], and later still that the diurnal correction applied by Christy and Spencer (a sad litany of incompetence) was of the wrong sign and so gave yet another spurious cooling trend [9].

C/wn Pelosi actually says she’s trying to preserve life as we
know it.
O.K.
I actually now think some of the Tea Party sell outs will be
changing allegiances.
We weren’t supposed to get so rational but also so together so fast.
We’ve seen the bagmen and the front men and want not more of it.

What this study says, though it could have been
much more explicit,
http://www.ia.ucsb.edu/pa/display.aspx?pkey=1482
is:
at some point rising ocean temp’s (the oceans are Earth’s
temp moderator–absorbers of energy) will cause
solidified methane (implying massive quantities in gaseous form)
to vaporize.
Then, if you’re hot stuff, you’re no longer hot stuff.
Your children are kaput.

Wow! That is one heck of a data point you got there, DavidYates. The war on truth is suicide.
Having done some research, I have to say that my 70′s N latitude may be off somewhat (though I was on the bridge when it was logged in–by me, I believe) as I am relying on 38 year old memories and haven’t found a source to verify it, BUT
having said that, it’s not far enough off to make my point the least bit invalid.
Climate change is not so much the issue any longer. Even the wingnuts acknowledge climate change. The two primary questions are: (1.) Which climate change computer model do we hitch our star to and (B.) can you prove that our puny human activities significantly impact the current climate change. I know you FEEL like we are changing the climate. Can you prove it. The scientific method doesn’t have a step called “consensus”.
Roy Spencer’s religion is Christianity and the religion of many on the IPCC is environmentalism. We all have our baggage. (On May 11th, you seemed giddy about the Pope endorsing global warming.)
One interesting factoid. Tractor Fixin’ U is in Huntsville, Alabama. Huntsville has more professional engineers per capita than any other city in the U.S.
Oh, smirk isn’t the word. It was really a complicated mix of expressions that I know too well.
.
It was the false smile of a high-status jock/prick who wants to beat up the lesser-status, higher-intelligence guy, but he’s smart enough to do it later, when there’s no one around except for those who don’t challenge the hierarchy or enforce the rule of law.
.
I went to Boston College–yuppie prick training ground.
“I went to Boston College–yuppie prick training ground.” The two Winkelputz bros. Sueing Facebook’s owner come to mind. Assholes. I knew more then a few of these self important bullies. They had fathers just like them.
My brother had a similar experience on two visits to Antarctica several years apart………
But I have decided the human race as an operating whole has not evolved sufficiently the ability to apply scientific principles in most of its actions. It is inevitable that there will be quite a die off and a crap shoot as to whether some random mutations permit humans to survive. The planet will indeed be here for a long time. Not so sure about life.
http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/07/29/data-cooling-on-global-warming/#content
Fox is pushing the no climate change in the headline – but then notes that the fellow is “controversial” and a scientist says he has been wrong in the past and is wrong again.
But it is set up as a he said/she said so as to push climate warming denial.
