About Firedoglake
boing boing three-and-a-half somersaults, tuck position, no splash (‘natch)
g’evening pups — how’s everyone doing tonight?
So I signed up for the Webinar, but when the email came it didn’t list Linux as a supported platform, so I guess you’ll all have to save the world without me.
Why would a progressive site want to support free software, anyway?
Anyway, hot here today, but nothing like the rest of the country. Too hot for me to motivate to do anything. Plus bugz. Deer flies in clouds. At least I finally seem to have driven the ant-people out of the house.
hey dave — how ya doing tonight? drop a line to members at firedoglake dot com and let them know that.
I did, I don’t know if anyone reads mail at that address.
Nice dive, Suzanne! You must be having good weather. It was sunny much of the day down here. The jasmine are still blooming and the air is perfumily rich.
Aloha, Suz and LLN pups, from atop Mauna Kea…!
I’m on the first shift so I’m headed outside shortly tho…!
I guess you’ll just have to write your own script.
That’s actually an interesting conundrum, as a lot of tech people seem to lean progressive or libertarian, so FDL would be a natural spot for them to frequent.
ryan is usually really good about quick responses to emails. it is the same email address for those who are having trouble signing up for membership so i know its well monitored.
Anyway, I was on fire in the last thread. I was dropping pearls of wisdom like a rabbit drops raisins. Alas, I’m all thunk out. I can’t brain tonight, I have the dumb.
hey dearie — glad ya liked it. how ya doing tonight? the skies cleared today and the weather dood is forecasting 80 in pdx this weekend. its only hit 80 in portland 7 times this year.
aloha tut — how’s upper paradise tonight?
I’m going to try to motivate to finish the script I’m working on to de-indent the myFDL pages. I got my test case working, I need to run it on live data now.
*polite golf applause*
Suz!
let it all hang out
hey newton — how’s the bay area tonight? only polite golf applause? dayam, i’m gonna need to really kick my dive up a notch tomorrow night — tough crowd….
hey tuez — how ya doing tonight?
I’m doing fine. You?
The neighbors complain at all the hooting.
It is very pleasant here.
Another gorgeous sunset, tho it’s 8 degrees celsius with some gusts of winds that make it even chillier…! 8-(
kicking back enjoying some hot outta the oven peach cobbler and enjoying the evening :)
i didn’t know you lived next to some of tut’s relatives *laughing* those dayam dive critics are forking everywhere dood
brrrr — that don’t sound like paradise to me but to those poor peeps back east, i bet it sounds wonderul
*heh* That Bulgarian is still a ‘b’…! ;-)
I don’t need no steenkin’ celsius……..hey, where’s my parka?
Sooooooz! Can’t say I ever developed a taste for peach anything. But if you’re enjoying, that’s all that counts.
So, ya dig Lulu Eightball?
I’d love to spend about 30 seconds at 8 C, right about now. Maybe then I could appreciate the rest of the summer.
All kinds of bigwigs up here tonite too…! I got to chat with the main guy that’s doing the hiring too…! Looks promising indeedy…! ;-)
It’s too hot to use the oven.
hey bfl — how ya doing tonight? my downstairs neighbors came back from a vacation to their family farm down in ca and brought me back all kinda peaches, necturines, plums, plumicots (plum/apricot cross) and other goodies. i decided to make a peach cobbler with some of the peaches and its forking wonderful. tis sweet and tart at the same time
My cuz back in NJ tells me it was 104 in her town. Only 93 in The City Beautiful. I like the hot weather though. Maybe not 104. No. Definitely not 104. But keep the cold. Keep the violent thunderstorms.
fingers and toes crossed for ya dood
I get to ‘enjoy’ about 8 hrs of it tonite…! Yippee…! ;-)
oh snap… that’s horrible hot and is usually accompanied by too hot to eat… no evening thunderstorm to cool it off tonight?
I have decided the City Beautiful needs to be renamed Helicopter City, or maybe I live too close to d/t.
Mahalo, Suz…! Time to head out for my first shift…! Caio…!
So, Dearie, i saw somewhere that you got your JD at age 54? That’s the way to do it. I got mine at 25 and at 52 would just as soon give it back. I probably should have waited a bit, too.
see ya when ya come back in to defrost dood
evening, Suzzzzz ….. firegods
It’s still 85 in here, but I’m going to try to sleep. Night, firepups.
Good…no, Best of luck
hey ppd – how ya doing tonight?
g’nite dave — hope it cools off for ya
Good evening, Suz; great dive! Good evening, CTut and LLN pups. A beautiful evening here, stars are out, and it’s cooled down to about 75, just right.
hey past — how was your day?
I thought all that stopped when Nancy Grace packed up and left town. I haven’t noticed as many during the daytime.
Got up to 75 in Wasilla today. More good weather coming. Too hot for Strider, my dog. Just right for me.
What pushed Anders Behring over the edge?
Yep. I taught high school, then raised kids, then got an MSW at 42 and worked as a juvenile probation officer. I trained a lot of baby prosecutors and thought, hell, I could do that. Moved back to California and went to night law school….started at 50. I’m one of the few people I know who actually loved law school! But the law is not what I’d anticipated…..very little to do with justice and much to do about sales/getting the next client. I’m still practicing part time, but it wasn’t what I expected it to be. But then I am a chronic naif!
hey et — sounds wonderful! your garden sure is looking yummy
A good day. Was able to leave wrk at 3:00 today, got home and went for a bike ride, it was about 95 then, so I was all sweaty at the end.
No they are still here. Last week I was driving down E. Colonial and a local6 chopper was hovering over an area on a back street for about 30 minutes and there were tons of cops around, but I couldn’t find any report regarding said incident. Two days ago they were a couple hanging around Baldwin and Audubon parks, as I was driving around. And I live near 50 and 436, so…
It’s not what anyone expects, i think. The stuff they don’t teach in law school, right? Find a niche and it’s good. And, by the way, law school was the worst 3 years of my entire life. Not even close.
dood, that’s too hot to be out riding a bike. how far did you get before your tires melted?
Good evening all. It’s a gorgeous evening in the Puget Sound. Doing a drive-by on my way in from the War on Slugs. With the good intentions of going out with a flashlight and picking another 2 lbs. of ready-right-now snow peas.
I’m trying to work up the enthusiasm to make 7 more pints of experimental pickled snow peas, which I won’t be able to access for 6 weeks. Ah, how much do I trust my skillz?
hey openhope — weather doodette just said you were gonna hit 80 tomorrow! do ya trust your picked snow peas recipe?
Yow!
Fuck no. I invented it. I couldn’t find a recipe that was Asian sweet-sour-hot oriented.
The good news is that I’ve got lots of snow peas. On July 22. Which is just weird! They should have blown out 2 weeks ago.
I’ve thought about going to law school, simply to work for the ACLU. And I’m 49.
The average person needs all the help they can get. Somehow, I suspect that is rather Utopian.
have ya used it before?
Well, that’s what I’ve heard from all the lawyers I know….that law school was hell. I was older and working full time and my kids were grown and I was divorced and had nothing I’d rather do on the weekends than read the law for 14 to 20 hours (crazy, huh?!). And, what the heck…..I never was a cheerleader (to my mom’s shame and horror) so at least I made it as a lawyer. You gotta laugh!
I go down Colonial on the 28,29 or 30 bus downtown to work every day. Small world, huh? Used to live off Alafaya but moved to Winter Park last year so I don’t get the helicopters up here. Nasty storms today. Not good when you’re waiting for a bus.
no, but it’s a researched and calculated guess. I used my dehydrated onions and garlic so I wouldn’t create botulism. These are things to think about when canning.
I have a regular route that I travel right now, a little over 10 miles, a couple of good hills, takes about an hour on a mountain bike. Tomorrow and Sunday, I’ll ride in the morning, so it will be much more pleasant.
sounds like pickled peas are pretty easy openhope
Nothing at all wrong with Utopian.
my mom in az takes her walks before dawn. she did the same thing when they lived in palm springs. said that is the prime time for doing exercise when its hot
Small world, yes, we are practically neighbors. Hell, we may have run into each other in Costco or the Best Buy on Colonial.
Oh, CT, fingers crossed for you!!!
Yeah, lovey sunset tonight.
Not 8 degreees C here. probably around 75 F
hey mauimom — how was your day?
Suz, I am so jealous. Can’t get decent peaches here in Hawaii. They don’t seem to get shipped over, or get all crummy by the time they get here. I long for good peaches.
Even if you don’t get on with the ACLU, you could put a law degree to work. I mostly serve injured people. It makes me feel good when things work out right. Of course, working in this field has made me despise insurance companies because they will do anything to not do the right thing and just pay up. Can be very frustrating! I truly enjoyed learning the law. Very inspirational.
Busy weekend, Suzzzz — 150,000 people converged for the Rodeo AND Moto GP races all this weekend.
Missing Son, but heard from him, and he’s in LA with friends, having a good time. So I’m happy for him.
Yeah, that’s the time to be outside in AZ in summer for exercise, even then it can be hot, but afternoon’s too brutal.
When I played soccer in the summer leagues, games during the week were at 6pm, and on Saturdays any where from 9am to 2pm, so I got used to exertion in the hot weahter. Not in soccer shape any more, though, those days may be past.
all the fruits and veggies were picked the day before i got them and packed in coolers for the drive back up here. i spent a couple days slicing, pitting, and freezing the fruit, made sauce outta the tomatoes, roasted the beets, and have a freezer full of summer freshness. i thawed one bag of peaches for the cobbler and i swear, they tasted just picked. they had the tartness in addition to the sweetness — unlike that cloying overly sweetened canned peaches have.
if i could, i would stuff some into the tubes for ya
Anyone here watch Friday Night Lights? I only just discovered it [yeah, I know, it's ended]. Been watching it from the beginning on Netflix.
summertime in monterey bay region is always hoppin…. are ya gonna go?
The best peaches I have ever tasted come from eastern BC, near Penticton. They start ripening in a week or so.
she says its a dry heat — as far as i’m concerned, hot is hot and just because its dry doesn’t make it any more tolerable. its just less bad than humid hot.
do ya get troubled by humidity when its hot?
hey tuez…..
I have a friend from Tucson who’s coming over here next week. I asked her in February to come, but she said, “no, I’d rather come when I really want to get out of Tucson.”
Yeah, I’m putting them up for those winter salads. Some are going in the freezer for chicken eggrolls. And pot stickers. And matza balls.
My folks are coming over Tuesday and we’re learning how to make homemade wonton skins. I’ll have 2 packs of store- bought skins for the real eggroll production, and we’ll make a batch of scratch with a pasta roller.
They’ll go home with 30 healthy eggrolls and a good dipping sauce. we’re adding fresh plum sauce, now that we rock!
that sounds yummy!
I’ve got a serious question, I’d like to hear your opinions.
Today, I went to the bank and deposited a check for $247 and wrote a separate check for $200 in cash. The deposit slip was made out for $247.
The teller seemed to have a hard time figuring out why I wasn’t just cashing the $247 check, but it was drawn from a different bank, and I wanted a paper trail, no matter how thin, on the $200 in cash, or I’d have just used an ATM.
I got a deposit slip back for the $247 and only $100 in cash.
Now I’d like to believe this was an honest mistake. But did the teller really think I’d drive away without noticing the missing $100 in cash?
I’m trying to decide if I should report him to management.
When I counted the cash and, even without my glasses realized there was a mistake, it was quickly corrected, no questions asked but had I driven even 1 foot, would I have had no grounds to stand on.
My market actually had Rainier cherries this week. Yum! Washington cherries are wonderful. Can’t wait to see what the baby-boys think of them. And avocados – 10 for a dollar! Summer is such fun in the food dept.
Sending good visualizing energy your way. “Let CTuttle have this. Let CTuttle have this.”…………
yay — that’s a great price on avocados. summer makes the produce aisles a delight
No, it’s dry heat here in SLC, low humidity in the afternoon 25 percent)and believe, me, 95, even 100 with low humidity is much easier to tolerate than 80 degrees and 80 percent humidity. I grew up in Ohio, so I knnow what humidity is like – you’re damp when you get out of the shower and you stay damp.
I did summer school one summer in Tucson. Classes started at 7 a.m. and ended at 11 a.m. (Pre air conditioning, of course.) The rest of the day was devoted to swimming and drinking beer. I didn’t hate it.
Interesting you should mention injured people. My husband has a workers’ comp case in the works. If we had universal health care in this country, we wouldn’t have any need to sue. He’s 58, what if he needs a new knee before being eligible for Medicare and his unemployment ran out years earlier?
Sweet dreams, all. I’ve talked myself in to canning 7 more quarts of pickled ginger/garlic/onion/pepper snow peas.
If I lived anywhere but rural, I would be a pain in the homeowners ass.’s ass.
Or a 911 call for the crazy fuckin’ woman out in her garden with a headlamp, muttering at slugs!
peace,laughter,strength
Right. I’ve visited relatives in Phoenix during the summer, but I suspect Tuscon is worse.
Animal cruelty festival vs. Red Bull addled race fans — hmmmm, tough choice, eh?
my mom and sister both love the desert hot. not me. i melt and its not pretty
g’nite openhope
You get 10 avacodes for $1. Hell we don’t even get that here in Florida, where they grow.
Shit, if one has to by them, the cheapest is still pushing $1.
If we had universal health care we could also streamline the personal injury side of it. Too late for America, I’m afraid. We are all owned by the insurance companies and other corps. (And why, for god’s sake should health care ever be considered an “industry”?) Well, if we ruled the world and all of that………..
Mostly what I do now is work comp depositions on applicant side. If companies just got people treatment right away, I’d be out of work. Ah, well…..
redbull and beer only makes for wider awake drunks
I live in Ventura County where avocados are as common as strawberries. Sometimes they all come in at once, I guess. Usually one avocado is #1.29 or more, but my store got a huge load of ‘em and used them as a loss leader, I think.
LOL, that’s a visual. G’nite, openhope.
And actually, I paid the same price for strawberries from my local farmers market one summer as I paid for Oxnard strawberries at the Haymarket in Boston.
congrats on snagging the happy lucky 100 past!!!
The swimming pool helps. Even though the water itself can get to be the temp of bathwater, the low humidity and evaporation effect on wet skin helps a lot.
I wonder what percentage of the GDP is the lucky few “little” people fighting the PTB?
I think that’s a first ever!
then its double lucky dood — get thee a lotto ticket
What a spectacular nite for stargazing…! I could make out every wisp of the Milky Way…! ;-)
I don’t exactly understand your question, but I do know that we would all be better off if the PTB would just, for once!, do the right thing. Workers Compensation, I’m sure you’ve noticed, is being attacked by the insurance companies. If employers (not all — I’ve seen some truly wonderful employers who actually do the right thing) would treat their employees with respect, all the work comp attys would have to find something else to do. And that would be a good thing.
welcome back – i made hot cocoa for you to warm up with dood
Hallooo, how’s it?
I did not notice Larue, but wasn’t someone here down with the Red Elvises? They were in Los Alamos tonight.
Your such a sweetie…! It was actually pretty comfy outside…! The winds were quiet so far *knock on wood*….! ;-0
Mahalo, ya’ll, for the kind wishes…! *g*
Did you see Colbert last night? He had a neuroscientist on. Great interview. The delightful scientist said (and I paraphrase badly…I was laughing too hard to catch all the details): “There are more neurotransmitters in a square inch of the brain than there are stars in the Milky Way.” Colbert was stunned and shot back: “Bullshit.” I guess I am easily amused.
hey bg — how ya doing tonight?
My question is if we had universal health care there would be no need for workers’ comp?
I would say more but the case is pending.
G’nite all.
I’m gonna go to put some clothes in the dryer and then visit la la land.
Well, considering we really have no idea how many stars make up the Milky Way, I’d have to agree with Colbert’s BS statement…! ;-)
g’nite tuez
Sweet Dreams, tuez…!
I absolutely agree. There are, indeed, some people who abuse the medical care system, but I think that is manageable. The fact that so many people cannot get care when they need it is reprehensible. I think the whole society would be gentler/kinder if people didn’t have to fight so hard to get basic health care. But, hey, I’m a social worker/educator as well as an attorney. I’m all about the helping professions … glad I found so many ways to be helpful in this crazy system.
when i hurt my knee, all i wanted was to have my medical bills taken care of and quality medical care. it totally sucks that i needed an attorney to make sure that happened. and that was before ah-nold redid ca’s workers comp system to favor the employers’ insurance companies and not the injured employee.
The book was “Incognito” by David Eagleman. One of the most interesting and amusing Colbert interviews I’ve ever seen. I was laughing out loud.
That’s why Boner walked about — they couldn’t agree to the number of stars in the Milky Way, CT
*heh* Okey-dokey there, PPD…! ;-)
There had been a years long assault on Workers Comp in California….and when Grey Davis didn’t cave totally, they brought in Arnold. My brother won a case that may ameliorate the worst of what the insurance companies have done. It is hateful that insurance companies rule our world. Shameful, really.
what ever happened to that story about boner having an affair?
good question. I’m going to guess that there was no base. His wife and kids are really nice and have stayed well away from the DC madness.
Good on you, Dearie. You are doing admirable work, helping to make this world just a little better. I commend you for that.
Tuezday, I’d lean towards the innocent mistake myself. Tellers are closely monitored and unlikely to get very far in far in a life of crime. As far as reporting him, I wouldn’t unless it happens again. Then again, it wouldn’t bother me to see someone ripping off the bank.
hey strat — how ya doing tonight?
Thanks again for your lovely salon, Suzanne. I’m off to dreamland.
g’nite dearie
I’m OK, lots going on, trying to keep it going.
Sweet dreams, Dearie…!
gotta just keep putting one foot in front of the other — is LM back home?
Setting here feeling sooo sorry for all them people in Noo York City having to put up with 100 degree temps and it making all the news and stuff.
Nobody even notices 100 down here in Houston any more. Someone upthread was saying it would get up to 80 degrees where they were. I’d love to see it get down to 80.
It looks like I get to start a renovation project week after next. should be good for about 6-8 weeks of work.
Hmmm, I might be up here for tomorrow nite too, they just approached me and asked if I could be available…!
whatcha gonna be renovating?
woohoo — good news dood.
The Better Half will be pleased, that’ll buy the stroller/car seat combo she has her eyes on..! ;-)
Yep, she’s been home almost 2 weeks now. No more smoke here. Still thinking of writing the 2 fires stories.
that soon to be new grandson is gonna be needing it in just a few weeks…
Suzanne, why doesn’t someone here take an inventory of the skills and knowledge and perhaps in-group purchasing that the Lake can offer to its patrons.
I’m a little miffed that our membership tote bags were made in China. We could have sewn some up for you-all here at our shop. But nobody knew.
Maybe there could even be a little bay in the Lake for people to post business cards.
yay for no more smoke! what’s holding ya back? time?
strat — email members at firedoglake dot com and ask that question. i think its an important one.
The above suggestion was not aimed at you of course, Suz.
My client is beginning to buy houses and renovate to use as rentals. The one she’s buying now has a cracked slab, and was mistreated by the foreclosed upon.
night, Suzzzz – have a great weekend
That’s the only thing we don’t have yet, got all the other items-Bassinet, Crib, etc…! We do have an old car seat we’d inherited awhile back, but, she wanted the combo and it’s in the same Winnie the Pooh motif…! ;-)
i didn’t take it personal at all dood. tis good that you are getting work — are ya seeing an uptick in jobs?
g’nite ppd
You mean Jane isn’t up right now intently following our dialog? Maybe we can sneak in a profanity instead of having to be on our best goldarn behavior.
Pleasant Dreams, PPD…!
ah yes, the all important theme. there are so many cute ones now — not like when i was having babies.
fuck, ya mean we can’t say fuck? when the fuck did that happen?
based on home inspection work, (my main emphasis) for the past two years, if it wasn’t foreclosed it isn’t selling.
I’m so busy with miscellaneous stuff it’s hard to tell what’s a sideline anymore.
night, CT – be well
i’ve heard that if its not foreclosed its not selling line when my mom talks about the az real estate market. she’s currently not working as a real estate agent but still tracks the market.
Well, time for me to suit up again…! Sweet dreams to ya Suz and the remaining LLN pups…! *g*
tis about time for me to turn back into a pumpkin peeps. thanks for letting me hang out with ya tonight and i hope to see ya tomorrow night for sat nite cartoons.
g’nite all
Got to say my goodnites, Suz, thanks for LLN.
Jane would not approve of profanity in her lake. Why? Because She’s a Lady
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIfxBthfFkg
Adieu for today.
