Madeleine Peyroux — Dance Me To The End of Love, at the Montreal Jazz Festival, June 2008.
What’s on your mind?
So, so hot tonight. Feet in ice water…
hey ce — oh noz! how hot did it get today?
What’s on my mind? Banning children less than 10 years old from airliners. FUCK, what a miserable day.
hey thatguy — where were ya flying?
Suz!
newton! how was your day?
Back from Michigan. DTW-MDW-DIA-SJC. Fucking screaming children every step of the way. Miserable, worthless excuses for parents.
It was a great vacation, but the trip back was just infuriating. People should have to get licenses before they are allowed to breed.
Terrific. Blazing, beautiful. How’s yours?
oh yuck..and a puddle jumper to boot. its always those landings and take offs that really get the little ears aching and the kids to crying…
It got so hot that the rabbits and squirrels laid on their backs under my lawn sprinklers, mouths open to each arched stream.
I could hear my grass crying….
some rain and overcast most of the day but it started to clear around sunset. weather dood says warming up this weekend — tonight when token was saving a tree, i could see my breath in the air. felt more like a forking october night than a forking july night
Aloha, Suz and LLN pups…! 8-)
hey robert — yeo-ouch! ugly hot weather but that’s a purty word picture ya painted… how ya doing tonight?
It wasn’t just takeoff and landing, it was every goddamed minute. Less than 10, DRIVE THEM IN YOUR CAR.
aloha tut — how’s paradise tonight?
OMG me too. I left the museum wearing a white hat and sunglasses. I boiled walking back.
must been great when ya finally landed at sjc and was able to finally escape the kids. how long were ya gone?
Florida is a sultry 80 with 87% humidity ( I do believe it’s not sweat but condensation I suffer outside). But we did have an evening thunderstorm, while I was walking the dog.
I’m dialoging with LLNFDL pups in my birthday suit, sitting in a steel tub of ice and thinking about Christmas….
hey tuezday — did the thunderstorm cool things off or just ramp up the humidity?
Are you sure menopause is not your true problem?
Cooled things off, nicely. The AC quit running nonstop.
*trying real hard not to laugh*
I’m going to be flying soon and I’m afraid it will be me doing the crying and wailing: Don’t Grope Me! Please Don’t Put Your Head in My Lap! I’m Thirsty! My Knees Hurt! Get Your FatRolls on Your Own Side of the Seat! ….. Well, you get it. Flying is torture these days. I don’t blame the kids for crying.
Plus, I’ll later go international…………did you know that you have to be at the airport three frigging hours before the flight now? (Tears hair out.)
yay!
10 days. It was great to get back to the kitties. I got kissies from Hank.
But I stand by my statements. No children less than 10 years old on airliners.
That’s a very sexist snark….
hey dearie — how’s the south central ca coast tonight?
the kittahs missed ya dood. was your trip business or pleasure?
Fever Ray.

: )
the reason i was trying not to laugh is i used to make similar statements when my hot flashes were real bad….
Gorgeous sunset happening behind Mauna Kea right now…!
I’ll be up top tomorrow nite…! ;-)
Foggy and overcast past couple of days. I kinda like the gloom sometimes, but I feel sorry for people who booked a week at the beach and end up in the gloom.
Do you know there are websites that help people avoid traveling through American airspace, so they don’t have to be groped needlessly while traveling internationally?
I’d love to know the affects of the TSA on international travel.
the devil got the best of me
woohoo! tis good news dood. have ya heard back from your app at the other ‘scope?
Oh snap…! I do wonder sometimes if the elevator does reach the top floor for robert…! ;-)
It’s for Keck and I’ll be asking all about tomorrow nite…! ;-)
the summer wind
fingers and toes crossed for ya dood
No elevators here, just an escalator….
All I know is that the airlines stopped taking lighters from us when it cost the govt. too much to dispose of all the lighters!! I laughed out loud. Had nothing to do with safety. The rules change every time some jerk tries something new…..and TSA is always fighting the past bad act. Where is all the “look forward” thinking in that agency?!
I do know that foreign airports apologize to everyone……”Hey, it’s America making us do this to you.” I don’t know if any foreign countries demand that folks take their shoes off …. the shoe bomber is so passe’.
Okay, rant over. I’ll down a bloody mary before I head to the check in line.
i’ve not flown since before 9/11 and all the security kabuki just reinforces my decisions to drive and not fly when traveling.
Vacation.
I used 911 to get us a really, really low cost walkabout around the EU. Prices were down. Couldn’t think of a better time to visit.
‘Horde’ of LGBT ‘barbarians’ storms Bachmann’s anti-gay clinic
A group of LGBT protesters today dressed as barbarians and stormed into Bachmann & Associates, a counseling center owned by Rep. Michele Bachmann’s (R-MN) husband which has admitted topracticing a controversial anti-gay “therapy.”
Inspired by Marcus Bachmann’s statement that homosexuals are “barbarians” who “need to be disciplined,” the activists dressed in leopard print clothing and furs, then insisted that Bachmann come out to discipline them.
“Well, if Marcus is not going to come out, we’re just going to have to act like barbarians!”
And that’s when the glitter came out.

I hear you! But I’ve got a Girl & family in Montana and my sister & family on Cape Cod! And my brother has a condo in Cartagena. And every once in a while I just have to go to Italy because I simply cannot resist!
Okay, for a good laugh. Ms Brown takes on the Mormons.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QarofaycN3c
sweet and it blows that your vacation started and ended that way. didja have a good time otherwise?
sigh…
i would fly international but if its a place i can drive to, i do that. i love road trips and enjoy watching how the landscape changes from that which i am used to.
”Hey, it’s America making us do this to you.”
El Al still takes the cake tho, Dearie…!
hahahaha i bet she hates even the mention of the word glitter by now…
Another street-theater masterstroke. Excellent.
i heart mrs brown.. her bikini wax video is a fav. ohmystars, when i really need a laugh, i love british humor
I drive my cars into the ground. I don’t buy clothes until mine are so decrepid that I have no choice. I do my own hair & nails. And I am a great saver! Italy is do-able with major saving. And it is soooo worth it.
That is funny….
bikini wax
I have an unemployed husband.
And I’m with you on being frugal. I’d even venture to guess, I can outdo you on the cars. I bought my last car new, an 88 Accord. Said I’d drive it until the day it dies. It hasn’t died, yet. At 49 I’ve only owned 4 cars in my whole life, 2 were new Hondas.
I saw Cenk on Olbermann tonight. Looks like Keith O is going to lure Cenk to Current….
Mrs. Brown is Irish but I love me some British humour too.
jeebus, my weather dood says the east coast is gonna get some relief from the hot temps in the next few days but the middle of the country is gonna stay hot hot hot with no relief in sight.
I’m still kind of depressed from the crash of 08……..and pissed at what the politicians of all stripes are doing to us today. I wish that things would get better for all of us, but I’ve kind of lost hope in change. You know. It’s tough.
i should have said uk humor. i enjoy scottish humor too
I think if millions of us just flat out decided to default on our debts, that would bring the MOTUs to their knees….
I’m thoroughly convinced the best “cure” for our woes is to just let things crash and get it over with. Our current government and economy can’t sustain itself and the pain will just continue until it finally crashes.
Our elected officials have created a fraudulent “crisis” to make the rich, richer, the rest of us need to say “hell no” and bring them down. It is only self-sustaining if we allow it.
Exactly.
If the USG can default on its debts to the US populous, why should we honor our own debts.
Huh. Only two Madeleine fans? (Not much of a LC fan, except for his Suzanne done by Nina.)
Well, we certainly need to do something….and it would be really good if someone with name recognition and credibility stepped up. We get scolded if we don’t take the first step, but there is more to it than one angry serf acting out. I do think that people are becoming more ready. Jane sure schooled Ed Schultz this week. He did some serious speaking out after her visit.
hey aitch — how ya doing tonight?
my fav cohen cover evah
Beth Orton’s Sisters Of Mercy also.
I watched Ed tonight. He sure did change his tune, but I wish he’d stop inviting that Vegas radio laughing rightwing bimbo on his show. But, maybe GE/comcast makes him….
OMG. I’m in tears
It may outlive you. My wife put 600k miles on an ’87 Accord, and it still ran great when she sold it.
Doin B-Ok. Et vous?
Nick Cave’s Suzanne is also pretty good.
i featured a longer clip of that up top last summer i think. when i’m really in the dumps, i round up mrs brown, billy, etc on the utube. uk humor can usually turn my frown upside down.
k.d. is the Boss. Period.
My doctor keeps nagging me to let him do a colonoscomy, but I just tell him like it is: stuff comes out of my ass, nothing goes into it….period.
when it comes to suzanne songs, i gotta go with sweet baby james every time
As I’m fond of saying to people bitching about their cars: “you shoulda bought a Honda”.
Because I’ve been working at home the last 15 years, and it’s needed a new battery for 2 months, mine still has less than 200k on it.
I think rust, even in Florida will do it in, long before the engine gives out.
she made that song hers.
hey rond — sorry, i didn’t see ya come in. how ya doing tonight?
I asked for my husband’s colonoscopy photos because I wanted proof….
Well, you do get first refusal rights…
Very well, thank you…the door was open just a bit, so I slipped in the back of the room.
Dayam. it’s 2:08AM here in my little piece of the east, and it’s still 84 degrees.
And all my ice melted….
my blackberry is not working
did you also get an evening thunderstorm to cool ya off tonight?
True. Ms. D’s Accord was indifferently maintained (at best); rust wasn’t really a problem either. Small things, like headliner falling down and seats worn out will come first.
gotta wipe the smirk off my face, but I do recall that there was a time when people who bought Japanese cars were considered unAmerican. (I’m not a purist anymore; bought my first semi-American car in 2001…..before the change of the world. Finally had to give it up a couple of months ago when the driver window works broke and no one was willing to try to fix it.)
No…but what the rest of the country calls a heatwave is just another normal day here. I did go for a nice ride on the Magna, though. :)
get your motor runnin’
For the Dylan fans.
I’ve already replaced the headliner twice, the radio once, the AC doesn’t work anymore and the sunroof was fixed 3 times and currently leaks big time, hence the rust and/or just overall rot. But it still runs.
iirc, i featured this one last year
Pardon me while I stop by to blog-whore a bit. My diary got front paged, and currently has 109 comments. I’m proud.
And CT, thanks for the shout-out.
http://my.firedoglake.com/mauimom/2011/07/21/have-you-gotten-this-from-the-dems-yet-what-will-you-respond/
hey mauimom — congrats on snagging the front page! that was a great diary.
how’s your island tonight?
Congrats, MM. A darned fine diary it was, too. Glad it got the attention it deserves.
Oh, and it still gets around 30 mpg.
Do Urc if anyone liked it? Loved it?
Hotter than I’d like, but cool compared to the Mainland.
My son left to go back home today. Mom is really sad & lonely. But it was great having him here.
Back in ’82, I was elected President of my local AFSCME union, and driving a Toyota Celica. Economy was bad, then, too; lot of people out of work. So I caved to trading the Toyota in for a brand new Oldsmobile, figuring, then, that they been making Oldmobiles for over 50 years, so all bugs must’ve been worked out of them.
The Oldsmobile engine locked up within 6 months because it’s 4 cylinder size was unable to sustain the car’s weight. It burned oil from the day I drove it off the lot.
GM cut me a deal on a Suburu.
Happy/lucky on the 100, AitchD.
I’m not on the emailing list. And I HEARTed your diary.
congrats on snagging the happy lucky 100 aitch!!!
I read and commented. Excellent piece. Exceptionally informative….
didn’t hear any complaints and do recall that folks liked it.
The only thing I can say about some of those big, old American cars is that if you ever have to live in your car, the biggies have a lot more room than the economies!
he was out for what, a couple weeks?
It was weird: I got this “forwarded e-mail” from a friend. It really pissed me off — both the content [crap from Mark Warner — and the fact that someone who really should know better would be so taken in my this crap, and then send it around to a friends list.
I just flew off the handle and pounded out a response.
Aw, thanks. I know I’ll get to heaven taking bullets for You-Know-Who!
true dat *sigh* i had some friends who were living outta a vw microbus (the kind with the pop up top and mini ‘kitchen’) for a while.
Do Urc ever get complaints? (Not counting my first post to LLN about ‘Laugh-In’)
About 9 days. His internship in DC had ended. He had no job — temp or otherwise — on his plate, and he wanted to go to LA to explore some job possibilities and see some friends. So I figured I could kill two birds, with the help of some miles.
What has most puzzled me for awhile is some reading from a while back of folks deciding to give up the roof over their heads in order to pay on and keep their credit cards.
Made no sense to me. If I had to make that choice it would be screw the unsecured cards and avoid living in my car….
I thought your diary was spot on. I’ve been a non-declared voter in CA for years, but I generally take a Democratic primary ballot, which is why I think I get Democratic pleas for money. (I also get pleas from R’s, but I don’t know why.) I generally write all over the pleas, state my case….sometimes heatedly. Then I pack everything (including the envelope the crap came in) and send it all back at their cost. Makes me feel better.
I also email Obama regularly, but that doesn’t make me feel better because I know he doesn’t give a damn.
I traveled all around Europe and North Africa for a year in a VW bus. 1971-72.
And bench seats instead of buckets! (Use your imagination.)
sure, i get folks who don’t like my selection and that’s fine. i know i can’t please everyone all the time and musical tastes vary. i try to mix it up with everything from jazz to country to metal. i do have to admit the only opera i have featured was either in a cartoon (bugs) or the muppets (beverly sills)
sweet :) musta been great to get that face time in. i last had face time with stephanie in october when she flew in to surprise me for my birthday.
Some people have nothing invested in their house (maybe they paid nothing down or maybe they are so underwater that they will never get back to even)and maybe they don’t want to see the law at their door to evict them. The credit car may still be useful…..
i envy you — that’s something i’ve always wanted to do but, as i have aged, i’ve changed it to an rv (but not one of them monster bus ones). a small enough to be easy to drive but large enough for me, token and bailey cat trip around the nation, seeing all the sites would make me happy. doing that in europe — i would be ecstatic!
The only thing that was bad is that we’re both sports crazies: we like nothing better than hanging out watching and analyzing football.
This is the dead part of the year: there’s nothing on but boring, boring baseball.
He’s waiting to hear about the NFL strike/lockout. There’s a possibility that some folks he’s talked to will be hiring once that’s settled and play is scheduled to resume.
RU saying if you featured opera you would do the complaining?
My then-husband, baby daughter and I drove around CA in a VW bus in summer ’72. I’d forgotten that I’m really claustrophobic. Painful! The van was comfortable enough, but I wanted to sleep with my head hanging out the door. Funny, cause we tent camped for years and that never bothered me at all.
i heard on the news tonight that they may be open for business by the end of the week – that the owners have ratified it and its just awaiting ratification by the players
well, it would have to be an opera that i liked before i would feature it…
It wouldn’t be 1971-72 though. New England might still be ecstativarius, and up into Montreal. Poutain! Yummy!
Sorry baseball bores you, but it is the sport of folks that still believe in love….
i think a vw bus is perfectly sized for just one. any more than that and its forking crowded
I used to love to watch baseball before it was boring. Football? I lived in Pgh most of my life. The network cut into a Steeler game for the Pope’s investiture (if that’s what it’s called). Then he died in a few weeks. My Catholic wife said, “We missed the rest of a game for a Pope that died?”
when i go to canada, i wanna take the canadian railroad cross-country. i saw that on a pbs trains special and was hooked. stop overs at the various great lodges of their national parks and great forking scenery.
We eventually camped for years in a government issued (friend in the Navy got tents for all of us………..I wonder if I owe the USA?) orange tent. Eventually camped upper mid-west yearly…two adults & 3 kids. Body to body. I guess I always figured I could chew my way out of the tent if need be.
I saw a game at Ebbets Field. Carl Erskine pitched. He’s one of three surviving Boys Of Summer.
When I click on Dylan, I get the video up top – isn’t that strange.
Wow, that must’ve been a real eye-opener, MM…! ;-)
In regards to Hanabusa, maybe D’jou should’ve won…! 8-(
God punished that Pope for crashing the Steelers, ’cause it’s God’s team….
If I believed in god, I’d say you two should watch out for lightening strikes.
hey twain, it goes to a dylan cover by the same artist as up top for me
how ya doing tonight?
I took the train from Pgh to SoFla, 30 hours! I’d never done anything for 30 hours. But the cross-country trains in France — now that’s how to go. Get off, stay somewhere, get back on, get off again and stay somewhere, all for the one RT ticket. And great dark tobaccos!
I’m good, thanks. Can’t sleep yet. Thought I’d drop in and see what’d going on.
Very strange. I clicked just now and got Madeleine’s ‘You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go” (it’s her DVD set).
I moved from Cincinnati to Los Angeles in 95 …via Chicago … on the train. Loved it! I do think that Canadian trip would be stunning.
Ain’t seen her since ’80.
That’s okay. I’ll just go listen to his Thunder on the Mountain” – great song.
Well, there you go. God works in mysterious ways/ :)~
I went to one Steeler game, only one, at Pitt Stadium, and saw Bobby Layne set every team passing record (while drunk, of course, and without a face guard) until O’Donnell broke them in 94 or 95.
Well, I’m a Red Sox fan, so I’ll watch them. But in general, baseball is to go to sleep to.
Football: you can watch the plays, strategy. See who did what right, who missed their assignment. Ditto with basketball. But baseball? Where’s the planning, set-ups, strategy?
Suz, if you want to see the Lodges and Chateaus, drive up to Vancouver, then head over to Jasper, Banff, and Lake Louise along the BC/Alberta border…! Gorgeous scenery…! ;-)
WOW– Madeleine does an excellent rendition of Leonard Cohen!
Hej everyone. :-)
Yes indeed He do: there was an ice storm when the Steelers beat the Oilers for the Championship. Remember? Earl Campbell ran to the outside, Donny Shell grabbed Campbells’ telephone pole thighs and held him upright while Jack Wagner rammed his helmet into his chest, broke his ribs. Then they beat LA in the SB.
The forking TV won’t show it, but there’s plenty and it’s intricate.
would make a great rv trip
hey mzchief — how ya doing tonight?
Three fans!!!
time for me to head out peeps. thanks for letting me hang out with ya tonight and i hope to see ya tomorrow night for muppets friday.
g’nite all
I guess I am down-graded from jet-lagged to less jet-lagged. How are you? Do you have room in your suitcase? Can I take that Canadian train trip with you?
Does she have a Billy Holiday voice or what?
Thank you, Suz. Sleep well.
Ricky Henderson (all-time base stealer last I checked) did a thing with green catchers and pitchers. After the first pitch, he’d move his bat back and purposely tick the catcher’s mask, say Oops, and take his stance, and the catcher would move back maybe two inches, and then the pitcher’s curve would land in the dirt since the catcher was two inches too far back, and Ricky knew the next pitch would be up in his bread basket. And you know the rest.
Sweet Dreams, Suz…! *g*
She sure does, and I’m listening to Billie right now on the French radio stream.
Oohhh, I love this area.
Hey, weren’t you the one who said the radio Internet stream via iTunes was maybe subscription? iTunes is free and so is all its radio streaming.
I’ve been there during both, the winter and summer, great skiing, but, if you’re not a skier, stick to the summer months..! ;-)
Thanks you for the tip. What URL did you use?
For what? Do you have iTunes?
Ah– a proprietary Apple application (“player”) for interpreting the data stream. Nope, I have no iTunes as I am using open source Unix.
I’ve stayed here, the Chateau Lake Louise…!
Unix, eh? This is a web site: http://www.linasjazz.net/ Their jazz ranges from Louis to Diana Krall to Otis Redding & BB, and everyone else.
That URL (web link) works. Thank you– nice selections.
My pleasure. The stream is @ 192 kbps, pretty high bitrate for free streaming.
